  • The DC Blizzard: More Proof of Global Warming!

We knew this was coming eventually. It came from Bryan Walsh, writing in Time:

As the blizzard-bound residents of the mid-Atlantic region get ready to dig themselves out of the third major storm of the season, they may stop to wonder two things: Why haven’t we bothered to invest in a snow blower, and what happened to climate change?

…There is some evidence that climate change could in fact make such massive snowstorms more common, even as the world continues to warm. … That’s in part because of global warming — hotter air can hold more moisture, so when a storm gathers it can unleash massive amounts of snow.

The real problem is not that this explanation is wrong — in fact, the “more-moisture-there, more-snow-here” theory is actually somewhat plausible. Of course, in the next sentence Walsh points out the opposite:

Colder air, by contrast, is drier; if we were in a truly vicious cold snap, like the one that occurred over much of the East Coast during parts of January, we would be unlikely to see heavy snowfall.

The real problem is with both claims taken together: last year’s relative lack of snow was cited as proof of global warming, and this year’s over-abundance of snow is also cited as proof of global warming. A theory that is considered confirmed by whatever happens, no matter what happens, is not a scientific theory at all. It’s like Petr Beckmann’s example of an “inherently irrefutable” claim, which is that there is a second moon orbiting the earth which has zero mass and becomes transparent when illuminated. That theory is entirely consistent with such an object never being observed — which means it can never be disproved no matter how false it is.

So it is with global warming. If there is lower-than-average snow it’s due to global warming (“too warm for snow to form”) and if there is higher-than-average snow it’s due to global warming (“more moisture there, more snow here”), and if snowfall is average, the two cancel out. If northern Europe as a less severe winter, it’s due to global warming making winters less cold; if northern Europe as a more severe winter, it’s due to global warming interfering with the Gulf Stream.

No matter what happens, it’s “proof” of global warming. It’s the theory that can never be disproved no matter how false it is. Which is to say, it’s not really a scientific theory at all.

It is a tremendous display of how developed human qualities of logic and reasoning can be relegated in favor of blind faith. It is like time travel to stone age when you listen to those people parading irrational argument as credible thought.

    2. Dan-Coalinga, CA says:

Thats it, that must be it, the invisible moon with no mass is causing "global warming!"

    3. LibertyAtStake: Alex says:

When will Warmists (especially the Goracle himself) agree to debate the science?

    4. A. D. Rhoads says:

Global warming is quite a hoax and kept afloat only by the hot air of its supporters; many whom make a living from its supposed danger. Is it just by coincidence that the scientist who consummed millions of dollars "researching" raw data, have destroyed the very data that would have proved their case. But instead, they destroyed the evidence.

Now, our Leader wants to establish yet another Big Government Office of Environmental affairs (or some such name) to consume billions of dollars; not mere millions. There already is legislation proposed or already in process, to penalize manufacturers who do not adhere to more stringent emmission standards and credit those who abide. The penalty will cause companies to pass along the fines through higher prices. Eventually, those companies will be less competitive and will need to layoff workers; all because of a policy employed without proof that Global Warming is really happening.

    5. Ozzy6900, CT says:

All of this proves how stupid the entire Global Warming movement is. If the whole thing was really based on science, the effects are either one way or the other. You cannot have it warm AND cold at the same time, it's either one or the other. They sound like a bunch of spoiled little children that have to have their own way with everything.

    6. Michael Snow, South says:

If this record Blizzard is 'proof of gobal warming' then it also proves that the old snow record of 1899 was also caused by global warming and that CO2 obviously did not drive it.

Send those politicians here to the Dakotas and we'll show 'em some REAL global warming.

    7. Joe, OK says:

The real problem is…Your argument "Does Not Follow" your prefaced quotes.

    8. Bobbie Jay says:

      No proof it's man made!

Open markets so people can deal with the global warming weather cooling warming conditions.

      Praying for everyone's safety.

    9. Steve, Colorado says:

These bastards won't stop until some global tax transferring the wealth is enacted.

    10. Dan Chicago, IL says:

Calling it global warming is not accurate. The main concern is climate change which will have an impact on different economies. Let's take Illinois. Climate change resulting in more rain in spring and fall and less during the summer means poor corn yields. This will have an adverse effect on the states agricultural economy. A change in climate, warm or cold, will have an impact on our economy and we should make some attempt to plan for this.

    11. CRAIG ANTHONY MILLER says:

LIARS ARE NOT NECESSARILY INTELLIGENT, YOU CAN PUT A SUIT ON A PIG, THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT OFFICIAL OR INTELLIGENT JUST LOOK AT PRESIDENT SOB, SON OBAMA OR OUR GLOBAL WARMING GURU AL GORE, HOW MANY LIES WILL WE HAVE TO ENDURE UNTIL WE FINALLY SAY ENOUGH! IT IS ABOUT TIME WE AS A COUNTRY REALIZE THAT THERE IS NO SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE IN OUR CONSTITUTION AND THAT THE BIBLE BELONGS TO BE RETURNED TO THE SCHOOLS AND THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TO THE PUBLIC BUILDINGS BECAUSE WHEN OUR JUSTICES MADE THE RULING THAT TOOK THEM OUT OF THE ESTABLISHMENTS THEY MADE A BIG MISTAKE AND NEVER COMPLETED THEIR JURIST PRUDENCE AND LEFT THE CASE OPEN, DEMANDING A VOTE BY THE PEOPLE OF THIS GREAT LAND, THE FIRST AMENDMENT HAS LANGUAGE THAT NEEDS TO CLARIFIED BECAUSE IT IS UNCLEAR LANGUAGE AND CAN BE STATED IN MORE THEN ONE WAY, THEY HAVE CHANGED THE WORDING, WHICH GOES FURTHER THEN THEY ARE REQUIRED TO DUE WITHOUT HAVING IT RATIFIED! THE BIBLE STATES WHAT GLOBAL WARMING WILL BE IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION AND THESE DEMON-RATS ARE NOT ANY WHERE NEAR AS SMART AS GOD AND HE SAYS THAT IT IS GOING TO BE CAUSED BY THE S U N AND I DO NOT THINK THAT WE HAVE TECHNOLOGY THAT CAN WARD OFF ANY GLOBAL WARMING FROM THE S U N. NOW ONLY AN IDIOT WOULD BELIEVE THAT SOLAR PANELS AND WIND TURBINES MADE IN AMERICA WOULD BECOME THE SAVIOR OF JOBS WHEN CHINA AND INDIA WITH THE VAST NUMBER OF WORKERS PRODUCING AT SUCH A REDUCED PRICE AND SELLING AT THE SAME AROUND THE WORLD WILL FLOOD THE MARKET SO OUR GOVERNMENT IS CAUGHT IN ANOTHER LIE THERE TOO. WE NEED INNOVATION, INVENTION, AND WE WILL NEVER SEE THIS FROM THE PROGRESSIVE DEMON-RAT POLITICIANS IN WASHINGTON AND ESPECIALLY FROM PRESIDENT SOB WHO HAS PROVEN OVER THE PAST YEAR HE IS NOT QUALIFIED FOR THE TASK AT HAND, HIS ONLY CLAIM TO FAME IS TO BREAK HIS OATH AND TEAR AT THE CONSTITUTION TO TRY TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY A COMMUNISTIC COUNTRY!

    12. Don Stallone, Wheato says:

      1) Global Warming is an unfortunate name for the process. I nominate Global Weirding; much more descriptive of local weather phenomenons.

      2) A single event — repeat, single event — cannot be used to prove or disprove Global Weirding. It is (a) the trend towards unusual weather over (b) a period of time (an increase or decrease of ____your_weather_event_here___ per season/year/decade) that will tell the tale.

    13. Claudio Herzfeld, Su says:

To explain the effects of global warming, all you need is undergraduate "kinetic gas theory". Increasing the temperature of a gas, increases its energy and increases mixing interactions. Because weather is not balanced, this increases storms. The Arctic is warming measureably, and as the cold arctic air expands it is pushed South. The cold air collides with warm air moisture pulled from the gulf to give us record snow. Our US weather is increasingly unstable, because the increased global temperature is breaking down the isolation between air masses. It is too late to close the arctic refrigerator door, so the Arctic will defrost before our temperatures "boomerang" back upwards.

    14. Roy North Carolina says:

Then if this is true, the Arctic ice should be increasing, but it is supposed to be melting. I am confused!!

    15. Mike, Winston-Salem, says:

Sounds like one of those discussions I get into with my better half… I'm always wrong. Just kiddin… no really, hon… you're always right.

By the way, does anyone remember the snow that hit the east coast in December '89, right before Christmas? 10" in Savannah, Ga. Is weather cyclical?

    16. Don, Bismarck, ND says:

They know nothing. Living in North Dakota, we go through this every winter eveery two weeks. These people have not been anywhere except in the beltway and have no idea of what actually happens. And, when it happens here, it is usually with a temperature of 20 degrees below zero. They need to visit one winter to observe what happens. Notice I said visit. We do not want them permanently.

    17. Scott, Indiana says:

If you were actually a scientist maybe you could undertand and explain it without distorting. This is about GLOBAL warming, not AMERICA warming. If you look at NASA's map of the globe, you will see in 2009 that the warming occrurs at the caps of the earth, not in the central regions.

NASA also reports that 2009 was the second warmest year in modern history (1880-current). 2000-2009 was also the warmest decade.

You don't take antecdotal evidence "Oh its snowing" and try to make some type of scientific assertation off of it.

    18. Jim, Maine says:

Voila!! This just explained the lack of a birth certificate! No matter what happens, it’s “proof” of Obama's eligibility! It’s the theory which can never be proved or disproved.

    19. Drew Page, IL says:

The glaciers came and the glaciers retreated. The Great Lakes are evidence of the retreat. Yes, there were climate changes. But these changes came about before their were any cars, trucks or industries around. So who was responsible for the global warming that caused the glaciers to retreat?

Is there a relationship of man-made pollution to global weather patterns? I don't know for sure. It would be great to listen to an open panel of scientists and climatologists present their evidence, both pro and con, so people could form their own ideas as to what is fact and what is opinion. I wonder if we will ever be given the chance to hear such a debate.

Right now, I'm skeptical of those who preach man-made global warming, then demonize those with opposing opinions, while surpressing information that runs contrary to their preconceived notions.

Sort of the heads I win tails you lose logic. The answer is "follow the money."

    22. Jeff, Minneapolis, M says:

Drew is right on! Global Warming/Climate Change has become a religion, not a science. The believers are ready to hang the skeptics for heresy. It’s become a witch hunt with little girls convulsing and pointing fingers at whatever cranky old ladies they don’t like. We need to have legitimate discussions and we can’t at any point stop and say the science is proven, end of discussion. If you are a true scientist, you need to leave the door open to the possibility that the theory could at least be flawed if not entirely false.

    23. Anna says:

Every time I hear someone trying to joke on "global warming"(which is actually global climate change) because it snows in the winter they reveal themselves to be ignorant and short-sighted. when it's night time do you think "there's no sun, so how can it be global warming, silly al gore!"

It's winter. it's going to snow in some parts of the country. It's going to happen every year for a long while. Global climate change doesn't mean it will never ever snow again.

Please stop making yourselves look ridiculous.

    24. Bryant, Kentucky says:

Global warming? Climate change? Carbon emissions? I could easily be convinced if I knew there wasn't millions of dollars at stake. It always boils down to the dollar. Take away the profit to be made and I don't think these "greenies" would be quite as loud. The only climate change going on is natural and controlled by GOD. It is in his plans, not ours.

    25. williemcc says:

      It's all Bush fault.

    26. Lynn Bryant DeSpain says:

How can snow possibly prove Global Warming? That would equate to putting the turkey in the oven and having it freeze!

    27. NASA says:

NASA and NOAA both have last january as the hottest month on record since satellites began recording global temperatures…

Just because there is anecdotal evidence within one region of America doesn't necessarily disprove a scientific trends or data that supports a scientific hypothesis.

More moisture in the atmosphere due to climate change does allow for harsher storms..

"Just because it rains in the desert doesn't negate the fact that its still a desert."

      You morons…

    28. Louis Levy Houston T says:

How about the theory that holds that Earth is re-cycling herself? Fear not of GB or global something else, its all Globalization.

    29. Tenn Slim Tennessee says:

      Opine

      bt

CLIMATE CHANGE does indeed occur, as it has since Genisis 1.

      bt

Here we have snow, enjoying it, living in it, and no one lays it off as GLOBAL WARMING. In fly over land, we have too D.. much Common Sense.

      end

      Semper FI

    30. Barry, Silver Spring says:

Global climate change (a better name for what some call "global warming") is a long term, global phenomenon. It makes no more sense to treat one season/one region/two snow storms as prooving or debunking global climate change than it does to deduce total snowfall accumulations in DC by examining a single snowflake.

    31. Drew Page, IL says:

One can only shake one's head in wonder at those who take whatever the "government" says as gospel. There are a lot of skeptics out there who advise "follow the money". That is somewhat somewhat cynical, but I prefer to follow their line of reasoning, especially when I learn of the "scientists" who surpress information contrdictory to their own preconceived notions about global warming. I believe that real scientists would favor an open debate on the issue, gladly listening to contrdictory evidence presented by their peers, rather than trying to demean and discredit anyone who believes otherwise.

Prior to the past 10 years, it was reported that the average temperatures of the earth were showing a warming pattern. But it was also reported that during these last 10 years, the pattern reversed itself and showed a cooling trend.

Why are those who are trying so hard to convince the rest of us 'agnostics' so unwilling to have an open debate among peer scientists and climatologists. I say call the experts on both sides of the arguement together for a debate and put it on C-SPAN. You know, like the health care reform debate was supposed to have been done.

    32. Ryan, NY, NY says:

It's important to note that this article neither argues for or against Global Climate Change. All it does is argue that global warming is not a Scientific Theory. Karl Popper, father of the modern scientific method, states that in order for a theory to be scientific (not necessarily true), it must be falsifiable. Because there is no way to disprove Global Warming (all evidence, even evidence that seems contrary, is used to prove it), it is not falsifiable, and therefore, not a Scientific Theory.

Global Warming could easily be real, but as of yet, the theories used to explain it have not been scientific.

    33. Brian, Minneapolis M says:

Albert Einstein must have had Al Gore in mind long before Gore said "the debate is over". Here is what Einstein said, " Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods." Now all the lies & mistruths come out…

    34. Brian, Minneapolis M says:

Albert Einstein must have had someone like Al Gore in mind when he stated this, "Whever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods." Let us not forget that Gore said "the debate is over". What a joke Gore turns out to be, as well as a lot of egg on his face.

    35. Bill, Chester, VA says:

"When will Gore debate the science of global warming?"

Never. He's making too much money selling carbon credits to the buffoons and blind innocents.

Besides, he's got that 220,000 Kilowatt annual electric bill to pay for.
