  • Morning Bell: The Obama Budget: Higher Taxes, Higher Spending and More Debt

President Barack Obama will submit a $3.8 trillion budget proposal for fiscal 2011 to Congress today. One might hope that given last year’s $1.4 trillion budget deficit was an all-time high and the President promised a spending “freeze” in last week’s State of the Union, this budget might signal a change in direction from the White House. No such luck. President Obama’s new budget is full of billions of dollars in new spending for failed government programs, higher taxes on American families and businesses, and deficit spending for as far as the eye can see.

At the very least, the budget document President Obama is submitting today exposes his spending “freeze” promise for the fraud that it is. As outlined last week, the administration would halt spending increases for only a $447 billion sliver of our total budget, with a total of $15 billion to be saved. That is less than half a percent off of last year’s spending. Worse, this isn’t even an across-the-board spending freeze; it is an aggregate one. So “spending cuts” in parts of the budget are immediately channeled to others. For example, even though the federal government does not need any money for the Census next year, President Obama counts the $5 billion spent this year as a “spending cut” that can be immediately spent on other government programs, such as a 16% increase in Department of Education funding, a 6.8% increase in Department of Energy funding, and increases for ineffective Health and Human Services programs like Head Start and sex education.

Given the best case scenario, the most the White House hopes to save from this supposed spending “freeze” is $15 billion. And that is easily dwarfed by just the $100 billion President Obama wants for his Economic Stimulus II plan. Then there are the tax hikes, including higher taxes on families earning more than $250,000 and a brand new tax on financial institutions to pay for the failed automobile union bailout.

And what is the end result of all of President Obama’s new taxes and spending? A record national debt. According to the White House Office of Management and Budget, the United States will post a $1.556 trillion deficit in fiscal 2010, which the Obama administration claims will be reduced to $1.267 trillion in fiscal 2011, thanks to their budget. Given this administration’s budget forecasting record, however, expect that final deficit number to go up. The Obama administration now forecasts $5.08 trillion in debt over the next five years; that is 35% more debt than they forecast just 12 months ago.

A common sense budget would move our country in a much different direction. For starters, the remaining TARP and stimulus funds should both be rescinded. Next, instead of the President’s fungible “aggregate” spending freeze, tough hard spending caps should be enacted. Finally, Congress should disclose the massive unfunded obligations of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; put those programs on long-term budgets; and enact the necessary entitlement and programmatic reforms that can keep government within those limits.

    Quick Hits:

    • Defending the secret negotiations and special interest deals used to advance President Obama’s health care plan, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told journalists: “The American people don’t care about process.”
    • According to Rasmussen Reports, 76% of voters generally trust the American people more than political leaders on important national issues, and 70% believe that the government and big business typically work together in ways that hurt consumers and investors.
    • Since some states have already spent the money on the belief that President Obama’s health care legislation would pass, the administration’s budget includes an additional $25 billion in Medicaid funding for states – an amount that was originally part of Obamacare.
    • According to Gallup, the percentage of Americans dependent on government-based health insurance grew last year, while the percentage with employer-based healthcare dropped.
    • The United States will deploy a missile defense shield to protect American allies from a potential Iranian strike.

    1. Ardath Blauvelt, NH says:

Will someone please explain why there would even be talk of a stimulus II when the first one is only half spent? And it failed at that. I don't get it. I hear people talk about the unspent money, the stimulus I package and the second one but no one puts them all together!

    2. Port Charlotte , FL says:

Some people keep asking, "If he wan't this Nation to work, he should…."

The real dynamic is," If he want's to destroy Capitalism, he should remove the Capital". Dave

    3. Wayne, Florida says:

The Dept. of Education needs to be essentially eliminated at the federal level. Education should be a state program with some federal funding and oversight, but greatly pared back. Education, when run by the government becomes an indoctrination program instead of education, which is what is happening in our country.

    4. Richard H. Irish, Ed says:

By now it should be plain to all who would see that Obama's plan is to dDESTROY our country financially so he can "remake" it into his redistributive Utopia.

    5. Dave, Massachusetts says:

Why don't I see anyone starting the $500B in predicted savings from Medicare/Medicaid. Wouldn't that be a significant savings to reduce the budget. Though then one would have to show that you could actually save that much or is it just reducing services. I think this whole selling point of health care reform has been forgotten and I don't know why it is not brought up.

    6. Chad, Kansas City says:

This morning the Dems were talking again about jobs saved. They do this becuase there is not standard available to measure this against to measure real performance. So they get away with claims that are unjust.

To create such a standard is easy. Take the logic that is used to call a job "saved" and apply it to the resulting effects created by economic reforms from the Bush, Clinton, Reagan, and Carter Presidencies. Then you have a way to measure the Obama "jobs saved" against the jobs saved by others.

You have the resources to look this data up. I do not. But what might you discover when you compare jobs saved by O, with jobs saved by, say, Reagan or Carter?

      Hope this helps.

    7. Iris of Islip, NY says:

It appears that the Obama Train Wreck is continuing to tip the dominoes towards destruction of prosperity of any kind for now and in the future. Gosh, we wouldn't want people working hard to achieve and prosper. That is a bad idea! He and his cronies never did and look where they are… We wouldn't want citizens earning money and keeping it, that is not good. They might spend it and get the economy rolling again.

We want to make sure that the people here illegally are getting their fair share of our hard earned money…. so that they can send it out of the US to prop up their country of origin.

Gee Whiz! What kind of a person could possibly think that you should set goals, work towards those goals, achieve those goals and then get to keep the money you earned along the way. Certainly not the Social Democrats in this lying Administration and Congress.

    8. Don Boyer LEBANON, I says:

Obama has no knowledge at all as far as economics is concerned—–maybe the

Muslims who paid for his education couldn't afford any courses in economics. He has been using Keyneasian economics to try to get out of the recession. Japan tried the same method in the 1990's and failed miserably. If he had used Reagan's ideas the recession would be history by now.

Obama is a narcsisstist and thus thinks he is always right no matter how wrong he is. Perfect example is giving constitutional rights to non-citizen terrorists. He supposedly taught constitutioan law, but continues to trample our constitution. He considers our constitution flawed because it "doesn't address social justice".

Wake up America before it is too late. He is destroying our country!!

    9. Bill says:

When will this stop. My Grandson will be paying this debt. Where is this money coming from? Our country is broke. Are we planning to borrow the difference in revenue coming and revenue going out from China?

    10. Ron, Western Canada says:

Ouch! Sure glad I am a Canadian and have Stephen Harper as our leader versus Obama. As many have commented in the past. No country has ever gotten out of debt by spending more.

    11. Mulvaney, Foster Cit says:

In the Sunday edition of the NYT the columnist Frank Rich used an economist from the Times to show almost ALL the deficit was "The Bush Administration's fault". Maybe one of your economists could write a Morning Bell on Rich's statements.

    12. Ken Jarvis says:

HF BS – Warns of Higher taxes,

      but on WHO?

      Families making $250,000 and over.

      THAT is OK.

      Financial Institutions.

      THAT is OK.

    13. Ben C. Ann Arbor, MI says:

Can anyone tell me what the Department of Energy does for our country – other than spend alot of money?

Clearly the POTUS is a master at the "shell game." No you see it – now you don't. For a brief moment I actually thought he might "get it." Now I know he doesn't.

    14. Michelle, Amsterdam, says:

I agree with Wayne in Florida – why is the federal government spending billions on education? This is the problem with the education system in this country, the top down approach just doesn't work. So now our local school taxes are through the roof, our state taxes are through the roof and we are paying higher federal taxes and for what? Less services for our children, indoctrination of global warming, revisionist history and fiscal irresponsibility, and big payoffs for politicians, lobbyists and unions! The small local schools and taxpayers lose!

    15. John, Rhode Island says:

More doublespeak, smoke and mirrors. It makes me sick that the MSM lets Obama get away with, or themselves, blaming "the previous administration" for this mess. This budget is all his, and it stinks to high heavens.

Wayne – Government should be out of education period. Government should not have medicare, medicaid, social security or any of those social programs. They all lead to problems. If government was focused just on protecting our liberties and not all this other stuff, we'd have more money in our pocket, better healthcare and education.

    16. JFBeck says:

This budget is pure and simple the continuation of the Socialistc transformation of this country coming from Obama's own words.

      It simply must be stopped.

The Education bump in budget is the main "vehicle" to contiue the indoctrination of the next vote generations to be brain washed into thinking that giving up Freedom for equal outcomes of lowering the standard of living of everyone (read no fat cat rich people) but union membership, particularly goverment work unions is more valuable for to Socialistic cause. The progressive chater boxes on TV this morning are already positioning the California bail out to save the poor union goverment work force.

What do we do with these 45% supporters of Obama who not think but instead "feel"…. Just where is this is all heading.

    17. Ray - Texas says:

Can someone tell me how come Scott Brown has not been seated? and why no one is demanding this happens right away? You have a large audience and acsses to national media. Please make it a prioroty. We need his vote on our side in all the issues. This never ending spending budget needs to stop!

    18. Bill, Colleyville TX says:

I have the feeling that the administration is trying to push the US economy into bankruptcy.

    19. Lloyd Scallan - New says:

Do we not yet see that Obama is determined destroy our economy so that he can implement his socialist take-over of our government? Regardness of what is preached in the left wing news media, we must not be fooled. These people

will not change. They know their socialist plan, that has been in the works for almost 100 years, and is within reach. They are not going to give up without a fight to the death. That "death" is this our nation. They are like cornered animals. They will bite, scractch, kick, or do everything they must not to loose this fight.

    20. Louis C F Levy Houst says:

It is not unrealistic to think about stopping the overspending from wherever it could work. Let see it as a major act of insided war.

This letter is the best comment for all the political problems our great nation is suffering in this 21st century.

      My Letter to President Obama

      January 28, 2010

Mr. Obama, I think it's time we had a heart-to-heart talk. Let me be the father that you never had or never really knew, because I think you need some guidance. It's time to man up. It's time to grow up. That speech last night was an embarrassment. You couldn't focus, you lashed out in all directions, you refused to accept responsibility for your own actions, and you were angry.

Being president is a big job. It's a big responsibility. You wanted the position, Barack. You campaigned for it. You told the public to trust you with it, and they elected you — and you're now president of the greatest country mankind has ever known, and yet you act like this was all coming to you, like you deserve it, that you're better than the people you are supposed to serve and that you have notolerance for debate or dissent. That's not the way it works as president, Barack. We have a Constitution, we have checks and balances, we have separation of powers, we have states — and most of all, we have the people. You don't get to impose your programs and policies on the nation and the people without our consent.

This is a representative republic, not a banana republic, and let me remind you: Karl Marx and Saul Alinsky are not our Founding Fathers. This is a nation built on individuality, built on liberty, free markets, and faith. Yet you, Barack, demand fidelity to a different belief system: A system that crushes individual initiative and free will.

The president does not berate Supreme Court justices who are guests of the Congress and who have no ability to respond to your attacks. You've made such a mess of things, Barack, and it's time to stop deluding yourself. It's time to stop blaming others. You are delusional. You are delirious. It's time for you to assume the responsibilities of a president rather than pretending to be one.

You've driven the nation's debt over the edge. It is your responsibility to fix it now. Otherwise, our young people will have no future. You were wrong to grant terrorists constitutional rights. Even the libs in New York don't want the trial there now!

You, Mr. President, are endangering the security of this nation. Now fix it! Reverse course, and end the terrorists — all of them — back to Guantanamo Bay, where they belong.

You are wrong to nationalize one industry after another from automobiles to banks. You are destroying competition and jobs. You need to stop what you were doing before millions of more families go broke from your misguided policies. It's not too late to stop this. I know you're not going to stop it because last night you said you don't quit, and I know what you mean.

You're gonna keep plugging for the same agenda, which is going to destroy this country even more — which makes me think, Barack, that's your objective.

You know, Barack, unlike most presidents you're dealing with a Congress that has super majorities in both houses, fellow Democrats. It amazes me that with all the talk about your ability to persuade and communicate, that you can't even hold your own party members together anymore. Is that Bush's fault, too?

Is it is fault of the banks and the insurance companies and the lobbyists that you can't keep your own Democrat Party unified — or is it a problem with your leadership, Barack, or lack of leadership? It's the latter, Mr. President. I'll tell you, you are not a leader. You are an agitator and an organizer, and a process guy, but you are not a leader. It is you who are doing something wrong.

The people in Virginia don't like it. The people in New Jersey don't like it. The people in Massachusetts don't like it. The people in Massachusetts and all over the country have the ability to inform themselves outside of your sycophant press corps, and they are doing so. Members of your own governing majority don't like what you are doing. I mean, this calls for some self-reflection and some circumspection.

Has it occurred to you, Mr. President, even once that you're not as cool as you think you are? Has it occurred to you that you are screwing up? And if it has, are you happy about that? Has it occurred to you that you have a great deal to learn and that you need to take your own measure, or are you Mr. Perfect? Are you God-sent?

Are you The One that you've been waiting for? See, I have a little concern there may be a psychological issue at play here. I don't say this to demean you, Barack. I say it because I'm concerned. I mean, Tom Daschle was always "concerned" and I like the word. I'm concerned.

You seem to have a whole lot of enemies, at least in your own mind. A partial list would include Fox News, insurance companies, banks, oil companies, the "special interests," the Supreme Court, Republicans, talk show hosts, executives, anyone or any business that earns over $250,000 a year, mortgage companies, credit card companies — and the list goes on and on and on. You have the longest enemies list of anybody I've ever known.

These people are not your enemies, though, Barack. They are Americans. They are part of this country. They are part of what makes the nation work. You are not. You have nothing to do, and have had nothing to do, with this nation's greatness.

You can't lay claim to greatness on any scale, not even rhetorical. But you have no direct relationship to the greatness of this country. You are damaging the possibility of further greatness. Nevertheless, like a bully, you continue to threaten all of these people. The Supreme Court, Big Oil, Big Pharmaceutical, Big Retail, talk show hosts, Fox News, the list goes on. You threaten anybody who does not agree with you. You try to intimidate them. You smear them. Your sycophantic media goes right along and carries your water. But this is not what presidents do.

You're supposed to lead, not by threatening people but by encouraging them, by embracing them, by thanking them, by inspiring them.

Most of all you don't seem to appreciate the magnificence of this nation! I know you don't. The way you've been educated about this country it's painfully obvious. You think this country is guilty, period. Guilty and unjust. You seem to think this country needs to be torn down so you can rebuild it. But you were elected to be president, not some kind of dictator.

You must operate within the confines of the Constitution. You are not bigger than the law, and you are not bigger than the people. You were elected to serve the people, not dictate to them. Anyway, I'm sure this little lecture will not do you much good, particularly given the spectacle of your speech last night. You really are full of yourself. But I truly hope that this little talk does do you some good down the way, because something is going to have to change in you or we are doomed for at least the next three years.

Obama and his wicked counterparts are halfway to socializing this country. They have the banks and the education system. All they need to pass is healthcare and cap and trade and this country is finished. We've all heard him mention "during my second term as president" even after the campaign……Has anyone heard of the New World Order.

    23. Ed. Florida says:

Same old Tax and Spend liberals. When will we ever learn?

    24. The Tax Club, http:/ says:

Ed from Florida has it right. Tax and spend that is all our government knows how to do now. Since tax season is approaching no one knows whats going to happen and how much money they are going to have to pay. Or where that money goes for that matter. I recommend people take as many tax credits and they can find. The stimulus packages aren't working out so save as much money as you can from your taxes. No need to give the government any more money.

It used to be that the bankruptcy cliff was way off in some far away place; now it is quite discernible. Now the cliff is distincly visible and Bernancke (Thelma) and Geithner (Louise) are full throttle on the accelerator.

    27. susan neal, Irving t says:

How stupid does Obama think we are? He needs to shut up and start listeneing; we do not want more rhetoric; we want action that matches his words; I can hardly believe people voted the republicans out of office supposedly for their fiscal irresponsibility, when Pelosi and the democrats took over in January, 2007, the unemployment was only 4.6%, now it is over 10% due to pelosi and Congress running up monumental deficits and knowing that the housing crisis was coming due to poor government policy and oversight yet the blame never seems to hurt them; how can voters let this admin get by with all of this hypocrisy? I can not and I am going to hold them accountable now and in November at the ballot box; they must know that they can not continue taxing, spending and corrupting the process of health care reform without paying a high price; all of the democrats should be thrown out and tarred and feathered as they deserve.

I can not bear to listen or even see Obama on tv without gagging; he is the biggest and most shameful Liar; he wouldn't know what a balanced budget looked like if his life depended on it; his policies must be defeated at every chance; AMERICA CAN NOT AFFORD THIS ADMINISTRATION; THEY ARE BANKRUPTING ALL OF US AND FUTURE GENERATIONS TO COME AND I WILL NOT TAKE IT SILENTLY! MY MOTTO CONTINUES TO BE: SAY NO TO THE P.R.O.(pelosi,reid,obama)!

    28. Wayne, New Mexico says:

I fully agree with the first two comments. Also, Where is the administration supposed to get the money to provide for these new inititives. They are broke and have been for a long time. The only thing they should be discussing is how they are going to pay for all the existing programs or how many programs they are going to eliminate to bring the spending in line with the income. We shouldn't let them talk about anything else. Whenever they bring up something new, just ask how they are going to pay for it while paying down the debt. If we don't hold them accountable, nobody will.

    29. TheseusRex says:

It seems clear to me that Obama wants this nation to collapse. When no one has a job and nothing is working, the climate will be ideal for these reds to seize total control.

This tax has discouraged all the hard work my son and I have put into building this small business.

Small business creates a large percent of jobs in America today. I feel for all my fellow business owners across this great country! Thank you Mr. President and Congress for all your help!

Who knows the answer?

when we wake to the fact that free education is not working because children only do what is easy and parents are no longer parenting and are incapable of using the word no we could maybe make a change to save this country.

the football stadiums are more grandious than the school houses.

the parking lots at the high schools are bigger than the ones at the malls, full of suv's paid for by parents that sre working their buts off for children that will never give back. it,s out of scool early and pregant and on to a life of wefare.

when we were children and got in thatt kind of trouble they had a different answer, it was off to the nut house for the crimnally insane.

we not only closed all of them, but we now enbrace this kind of behavior and pay for it with tax dollars.

with all this waste and irresponsible goings on should we exspect that all is going to be ok, and continue to ask , may god blees america

    33. Dan, Albuquerque says:

Can someone explain to me a couple of things:

      1) what is the benefit to the business owner of a $5,000 tax credit? I am not a math major but really, What planet do you live on to think that $5K is incentive to take on a new employee at a cost of 20,30,50k plus benefits and any other associated costs. And if you do think that's a great idea I got some ocean front property in New Mexico to sell you.

      2) While everyone is arguing about the number of jobs created or not. I have not seen or heard anyone ask the question of "what happens to that job when the stupulous money is all spent? what does that person do then?

A job, by definition is 'hire for a given service or period' where as, a career is 'a profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permenant calling.

      Shouldn't that be the mentality?

This cannot be solved by a chosen few in DC. We need to remove the boot heel of the government from the necks of the producers.

The arrogance of this president and Congress boggles the mind – in 1912 it was said that the claim that the Titanic was unsinkable "flies in the face of God," and our leaders are just a foolish, thinking they can defy gravity. Anyone knows that if a household or business over spends, bankruptcy is the result. My fellow Americans, we did this to ourselves, by not rising up en mass and demanding of our lawmakers a stop to this fiscal insanity! A day of reckoning is coming in which we will bitterly lament our complacency is the face of the treachery to our republic – they are destroying this once great nation, tearing it limb from limb. So very, very sad.

    36. Mike, Conyers GA says:

Once again Mr. Ken Jarvis is on the prowl, I am not sure that anyone, other than Nancy Pelosi, is as blind, deaf, and dumb on the subject of taxing our small business owners and job creators than is Ken. Simply put if you tax the "rich" Americans than don't expect any additional job growth. If you, once again, tax the banks who accepted TARP money that they have already paid back, don't expect any increased lending.

Why not focus on the Government lenders; Freddie and Fannie, or why not focus on the "Government" auto makers; GM and Chrysler. Neiither of these entities has paid back the slush money they recieved(and don't expect them to). GM might even ask for more!! Ford motors seems to have done well for itself without taking ANY money!

The only way we will get our country back is to rid ourselves of the lunatic left which has invaded the media! Lies NEVER PRODUCE POSITIVE RESULTS…unless you are a communist trying to take over a country, then you begin your lies to the young! Exactly what has happened. It is all blowing smoke up our pants leg and telling us the forrest is on fire. The really bad thing, he believes all he says. It is time for the Republicans to get down to brass tacks and prove to the people that they are capable of doing better, then do it. This BS of fighting between the parties has to go. We can not handle much more of the spend that obama and the dems are doing. The people have to have jobs, not government jobs, not union jobs or make do jobs, real jobs we can believe in. The Congress has to realize they work for us, the people, and stop working for themselves. VOTE IN 2010 SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE THAT ALL CAN BE REPLACED AND WILL BE IF THEY CONTINUE ON THIS PATH.

    39. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

I love the Rush Limbaugh letter to Obama. I will mail it to all my contacts and urge them and you who write here to do so also.

Obama is an enemy of the State. He is not a good man, except maybe in his own eyes.

He is a fanatic and a radical whose goal, I have been convinced, is to destroy the USA.

The man is a disgrace to the office of President and a disgrace to all that America is!

We must rid ourselves of the pestilence that is called: "Progressivism". It is antithetical to Americanism!

It is Marxist Socialism which has ruined every country where it has succeeded in installing itself; and, we are well on the way to that ruin!

Our only hope is for the people who make up the "Tea Party" to grow and return us to the Constitution, Obama not withstanding.

This is the same old speech obambba sputters each time he gets in front of the media. This administration is a third world regime. Not a clue. They have one thing on their mind (spend, spend, spend, spend. )

We did not need more money for our government run union schools. The school system gets more money every year. Poor old school teachers and administrations. How much money are they making? What are their life time benefits? Three months off a year! That is a great vacation. How many sick days do they get?

Every year our political leaders run on more money for our schools..Our professors do not teach. Interns teach.

      More government run union schools.

These people remind me of Haiti and Venezuela run government.

    43. Wallyblu says:

If spending could get you out of debt, then we should have all those who's homes are being forclosed on go out and buy a motorhome and if that don't work they could buy a big boat.

      Sound simple.

    44. Earl, QUEENS, NY says:

In addition, we read on CNSnews (2/1/10 – Cost of Obama's Jobs-Creation Plan Around $100 Billion, Spokesman Says) of more deficit spending. The phony $787 billion stimulus/porkulus bill was a complete failure!! Does anybody honestly believe that adding another $100 billion is going to make a difference? CUT TAXES!! REDUCE REGULATIONS!! That's the proven way to grow an economy and create jobs, not irresponsible profligate government spending. I remember one of Gerald Ford's quotes (when criticizing NYC officials during the city's 1975 fiscal crisis) that can describe Obama and the Democrats in Congress – They don't know how to manage money; they only know how to spend it!!

    45. Don, Raleigh, NC says:

Do not look for anything Obama says to make any sense. He is now and likely will be for the next three years, in campaign mode using the tactics and rhetoric that got him elected in 2008.

He doesn't THINK Americans are fools. He looks at how a majority of the electorate in this country voted him into office on the basis of his oratorical skills, vague promises of hope and change and the good press from the so called main stream media; the thrills up the leg, the unembarrassed comparisons to a god like figure; the continuous cashing in on the chips so cleverly and relentlessly accumulated over the "ineptitude" and "stupidity" of the Bush Presidency, chips that the deviously clever Left continue to "cash in."

He doesn't THINK Americans are stupid, he is convinced of it at his egotistical core and has absolutely no qualms about lying and twisting facts secure in his conviction that the "ignorant masses" are eager to be led anywhere he wants to go by the sheer force of his "brilliance," and the sycophantic press will praise and glorify his efforts.

I sincerely hope that he is dead wrong about my fellow Americans but the Dems can go down in flames in November and this guy will likely blame Bush. Obama needs to be stripped of his facade and taken down by any legally available means. What is the likelihood of that happening?

    46. Carolyn, Illinois says:

It's not as if we have not (sorry for double negative) seen the writing on the wall. We are awake and we must bring down this idealogue and his cohorts with by voting for the best and brightest individuals we have. Each State and City knows who they are –just do it. Because it is getting worse by the second and DO NOT BELIEVE A WORD OUT OF HIS MOUTH!!!

    47. Roger, Florida says:

Let's wait and see how well the congress odes with this budget now that the Demos do not have the control any more.

    48. don elleworth port c says:

    49. Prevailer76AZ says:

The so called 'tax freeze' and this 'making nice' since the state of the nation address is all calculated to save Obama's hide. Things have been getting a little too uncomfortable in the polls and even the media is beginning to wise-up to the flimflam man. Therefore Obama is suddenly open to more news conferences, his toothy grin displaying a welcoming mode.

Truth: nothing has changed. Where WILL the money come from to pay off the debt he is accruing? My family and most others will long since have been relagated to the poor house. Borrow it? From whom???? .

    50. Prevailer76AZ says:

Up until the past few days, my comments have almost always been printed – then not.

Am I being blocked? My words have not been as vitriolic as many others, and I have much appreciated the opportunity to expound on the matters in discussion. I am terribly concerned with the 'state of the union.'

As a 77 year old great grandmother with incurable cancer, being heard means a lot to me. I have enjoyed being involved in opinion page dialogue with local papers for many years – in particular the old Phoenix Gazette daily newspaper where I was a regular contributor for 5 years and then after 100 years, it went out of business.

If my comments are no longer welcome – tell me.

    51. Greg, Bakersfield, C says:

I do not think Obama is a natural born citizen and this is the place to start to get rid of him. Him , his administration and ALL his Czars should be brought to trial for High Treason against the People of America, if found guilty, sent to Getmo for life. The people of this fine country should file Extensions on their taxes if they owe any at all, and the hard working citizens that have a refund coming should file as soon as possible. Also , if your Representative or Senator do not agree= Fire them.

    52. Jonathan Seid, Willi says:

It has been a dream of mine since 1990 that the Democratic Party would control the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives at the same time.

The dream has the Democratic Party running shady-deals for votes, running up un-affordable Federal debt, increasing taxes, dropping our guard against our enemies and political dis-satisfaction running amok for 3- years.

The dream includes a Republican Party standing around with their hands in their pockets telling us "we are not Democrats!" as their opportunity passes them by.

My dream seems too good to be true because the Electorate wakes up and finds that what they really are are Libertarian.

    53. TELMAN, Loganville,G says:

It's time for all of us to use our most powerful tool, the vote, and put a stop to the federal government meddling in our daily lives. The federal government has failed in every project or initiative it has undertaken, not one of it's programs is run sucessfully or even at a break-even point. The entire cabinet needs to be removed and limited to a bare minimum, defense and transportation are the only two I can think of, that need to be handled on a federal level. Everything else needs to be run at a state level so those in charge are directly accessible to the people. The Constitiution contains complete instructions on how to run a sucessful Republic and it needs to be followed to the letter. We are not a democracy, socialist or otherwise. We are a REPUBLIC and until we as voters demand an end to democracy and a return to a Constitutional Republic, we are going to still be a sinking ship. We must use the power of our vote and purge our Congress of power mad socialist democrats and fill iit with those who support a return to Consitutional Republic. We must return more power to the States and the people. The federal government has no place in any of our family's affairs. We must be free to educate our children as we as a community feel best, not some socialist in Washington,DC. I have every confidence all of our border states (except maybe California) can do a great job of protecting our borders if the federal government will get out of their way. Congress and the President are the problem, not the solution. The power of our vote is the first stage of the cure.

    54. Roe says:

I'm glad some of you have thoughtful, intelligent comments and questions. As a progressive who respects people on the other side (when they're rational) I'm really glad to see that.

    55. Dick, Hawaii says:

Misstatements, lies, deceptions, and forgetting that GW put us here. Barrack swims circles around your tea bagging arguments and talking points like he just did in Baltimore.

    56. Nancy in Placerville says:

Our worries about being "forced into Socialism" and our worries about the "out of control government" spending would be over if someone would just come forward and produce documentation proving that Obama was not born in Hawaii and is not eligible to be president of this country. Obama has spent $1.7 million dollars in legal fees to keep from having to show his full length birth cirtificate or the passport he flew to Pakistan on during the time period when Pakistan would not allow any USA passports into their country. If you voted for Obama, please log on and explain to me and others, why anyone would spend $l.7 million dollars to keep something hidden, if there was nothing to hide?

We need to demand that Congress and our Supreme Court uphold the Constitution of the United States. Congress demanded to see John McCain's birth cirtificate when he was running for president because he was born in the Panama Canal where his father was serving in the U.S. military. Congress did NOT demand to see Obama's birth cirtificate? Why?

Contact your State Senators and Congressmen/women and continue to hound them with letters and phone calls demanding they see Obama's long form birth cirtificate and stop alluding the issue. Our Constitution is what makes this country great and we must demand that it be honored and obeyed.

And I, too, am sick and tired of hearing any of the Obama administration, including him, say "inherited the financial crises from the Bush Administration". Fact is, Obama inherited the financial crises from the Clinton Administration. It was under them, signed by Bill Clinton, that they passed "THE DEREGULATION OF THE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS" bill which opened the door to bank greed which went crazy with "creative financing" terms so people could buy homes they counldn't afford and as we all know, the banks got very wealthy!! However, as the "bubble grew" it had no alternative but to burst somewhere along the line and left a lot of bad bank debt and homeless people. The housing bubble did start to burst under George Bush. But that is not to say, it didn't originate with Bill Clinton and his administration. And now today, it's not funny at all but it seems almost funny….that our government (president, senators, etc… are TRYING every possilbe thing they can to "re-regulate" the financial institutions. I guess we are all suppose to be too dumb to figure this out? Obama wants to control bank bonuses and tax banks for "being greedy" but if the banks had not been deregulated in the first place, our economy would likely still be good. Are you aware (the government lenders) Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are about to receive BIG $$$$$$ to give their executives BIG BONUSES!!! WHOSE HANDS DO YOU THINK THAT MONEY IS GOING INTO AS IT COMES OUT OF YOUR POCKET!!!

WE NEED TO MAKE A LOT OF NOISE, PEOPLE. Obama and his liberal agenda can be stopped if we people continue to fight. This is our country and standing up for it, and our rights, is a privilege and an honor in view of the fact this country is what gives us our freedoms. Protect it… Stand up people! Socialism and Communism are NOT THE AMERICAN WAY. Write your Senators and Congress persons today. And tomorrow, and the next day. Call them, fax them. Tell them you don't want the Obama Health Care bill which is loaded with bribes and corrupt behind closed door deal. Tell them you want the Health reform bill started completely over with all members of the House and Senate involved. Tell your state representatives you are against the Cap and Trade bill.(do you know Cap and Trade will increase your energy costs by huge amounts but spends little on true environmental controls. Most of the Cap and Trade money will go for special interest spending) Tell your state Representatives you oppose another bail out stimulus. Tell your state representatives you want pork spending stopped. Tell your state representatives you demand they listen to what people are saying all accross this country. Tell them you want no new taxes; keep business able to hire more people without being taxed to death. Speak up, people, before it's too late. Invest in a book of stamps….it's a small price to pay for saving a huge disaster!!

Starting with, demand Obama produce his long form birth cirtificate! If he's not elligible to be president, then he's out of office and everthing he has signed thus far into law, is nul and void. We can save freedom and democracy!

    57. toledofan says:

I fear we may be at, like, Stimulus 4 before somebody says enough. This is just incredible to watch and try to comprehend; first we jack up the budgets of almost every department and then we say we'll freeze the budget at the higher mark, this is with money we didn't have in the first place and then we call that saving because we won't go over the adjusted cap? Except now we have another 100 million in a jobs bill to hire more government workers or to save what we have. It gets confusing, why not just stop spending, or why not draw back to the budget of say 2008. Why not because the democrats can't stop the spending, that's all they know how to do. I think it's only going to get worse before it gets better.

    58. Dave White, Provo, U says:

Obama has resurrected the great sin of the middle ages Gluttany, in a new form, his budget. We as common sense people must flood our elected representatives with resounding messages of don't vote for the over inflated, irresponsible, financial suicide, big government budget. Instead let every department and every government employee take a 10% cut in pay and benefits like many of us tax payers did to keep our jobs. Maybe the senior administrators should take a 15% cut?

There seems to be a lot of hope being placed on the congressional elections this year. Regardless of who may be elected ,regardless of what party controls congress nothing will change without the American people demanding IN PERSON that their representatives actually represent them. To the best of my recollection congress has not reversed ANYTHING they have done since prohibition was repealed. No matter the party in power they continue to serve the special interest groups , themselves the elite and the one world government GENTRY class intent on enslaving us all. Wake up people ! Don't ask your congressperson or senator ; DEMAND THEY ABIDE BY OUR CONSTITUTION BEGINNING TODAY ! If they do not , Tell them to vacate their office NOW.

    61. Blair, Franconia, NH says:

Well, it's official. We aren't returning to the moon anytime soon. Obama wants NASA

to help private industry build rockets that will take our astronauts to the International

Space Station. That's right. We're going to the International Space Station. Not the

moon, not Mars. Why? Because Obama wants to prove he's NOT Bush. Bush proposed the Constellation program after the Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over

Texas seven years ago. Why cancel the Constellation program? To provide more money for his phony baloney health care reform. He wants to pretend he's cutting the

budget by $1.6 billion when he's actually raising the deficit by that much. Kay Bailey

Hutchison and the senators from Florida, will, hopefully, restore the funding.

    62. Pete T says:

Again I heard BHO say the Bush tax cuts for the rich were not paid for! When is someone going to call the Pres on this distortion. If the treasury only increased $1 more than the year before the tax cuts; they were paid for!

Also out there, does anybody know how much the treasury spends printing paper $ bills each year that only last 2-3 years? I say burn the paper dollars and make an effort to circulate all those Susan B's; Sacajawea's and President $coins they minted. They'll last 100 years and save $s!

    63. David Milwaukee, WI says:

Those of you asking "why a second stimulus…?"

Neither the first or second is *really* a stimulus….

They are BOTH Obama RE -ELECTION slush funds….. THAT is why they have not been spent yet…. Wait until fall 2012…. THEN watch the funds flow……

It should be apparent to even Democrats that this budget is a recipe for disaster. Is it time for taxpayers to say "hell no" we aren't going to pay?

Either Obama is incompetent, or this is deliberate economic destruction to cause the Republic to fail, for a Marxist takeover. That may have sounded crazy a year ago, but does it today?

Obama just said I am not an ideologue. He lied again, only an ideologue would dare propose such a budget, which includes Cap & Trade, & Health Care Reform that AMERICANS DO NOT WANT!

A tax payers revolt, filibuster, file extensions as long as possible to get closer to the November elections, Obama wants to break the taxpayer, well it's not his money. What will Obama do if 200 million taxpayers refuse to pay?

Congress must be taken back to put the radical in gridlock until we can replace him with a president who believes in liberty, our constitution, and fiscal responsibility.

    66. Whicket Williams Kin says:

We gotta GET TOUGH!! everybody write everybody and tell them they had better NOT approve this budget!! When are we going to start impeachment?

    67. Jeanne Stotler,Woodb says:

I have said before that every senator and represenative should be required to READ the Constitution, sign an afadavit to the fact BEFORE they are sworn in, thr president should as well. All bills should be read and sworn to before being brought to a vote, NO HIDDEN agendas or pork. We need to get rid of anyone regardless of party who cannot be open with their constituents. Most members of Congress and in particular Reid and Pelosi forget that they work for US, WE THE PEOPLE. One way to reduce cost, Look into what we are paying for UNNecessary travel by members of Congress and the President. Will someone post what the cost has been. All of BHO's trips (more than any other president) and all that members of Congress took overseas.

Hey, Heritage, is Obama's FCC swinging the sword of Damocles over your heads by ordering you to call him "President" or face certain sanctions? It get's extremely annoying to read "President" in front of Obama as much as you do and why I am really disappointed with you. Obama is a usurper and not a natural born citizen. Shame on you for ignoring the keen sense of the obvious and worshiping this narcissist.

It is obvious that islamobama and his NWO cronies are hell bent on destroying the US dollar, our economy, capitalism and the free market in the US. It is obvious, also, that this is a deliberate plan to create a "world currency" and empower the UN.

This is much larger than islamobama who would not have the brains to concieve or or execute this plan.

Look for this moron and his co-conspirators in the house and senate to create a financial crisis that will be used as an excuse to declare martial law. After that, Katy bar the door. All hell is about to break loose in the US.

    71. David, Memphis says:

      To Ken Jarvis,

You're wrong about our higher taxes getting us out of this mess. As far as I can tell, the gov't very rarely spends my money wisely, and that's what it is– my money. I worked for it– no one has more right to it than I do. If I was allowed to keep my money, I could save more, which banks could then lend out. I could buy goods & services which would help stimulate the economy. I would have more money to donate to charity. All these things I can do less of because my gov't takes my money & misspends it.

    72. Cathryne Stone, Texa says:

I'd really like to know why the President is being allowed without apparent protest to give management and contro to another countryl from our US Defense Dept. the Internet which we have controlled since the beginning? It certainly smacks of treason to me since it weakens our security which he swore to defend. He's spending money we don't have…and I truly believe he's doing it on purpose as fast as he can, and furthermore, I believe that he's doing this in some effort to make the US join some kind of global government. I feel like we have been betrayed from within our Congress…for letting this happen. I don't think we have a viable constitution any more and many would like to see the Supreme Court disbanded. There are internal traitors in DC; they apparently have power on their minds…and their mindeet is control. If there is a passage of this healthcare bill and cap and trade and new stimulus, there will be lawlessness we have never seen in this country which would force martial law. This whole mess needs to be kicked out and maybe dissolved. I personally think the states individually ought to take their powers back, disband the federal government and let us do this without the US federal government at all. Make museums of all those evil, rat-infiltrated buildings.
