A Mysterious Assassination Benefits Iran’s Propaganda Machine

Iran’s state-controlled media have launched a full-blown propaganda campaign claiming that the United States and Israel are responsible for the murder of an Iranian scientist. Iran’s Foreign Ministry charged that the bomb plot that killed Dr. Massoud Ali-Mohammadi in Tehran on Tuesday “revealed signs of the involvement of the Zionist regime, the U.S. and their allies in Iran.” By portraying Ali-Mohammadi as a nuclear scientist and former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who was “martyred,” the regime claims that his killers are counter-revolutionary forces backed by foreign powers … More

More Taxpayer Funding of Abortion in the Senate Health Bill

The Nelson-Reid agreement on abortion is not the only source of taxpayer funding for abortion. An obscure addition to the Senate version of health care reform that was adopted on Christmas Eve is a gift package with unexpected contents: even more taxpayer funding of elective abortions. According to a new analysis just released by National Right to Life Committee legislative director Doug Johnson, Sec. 10503 of the Reid “Manager’s Amendment” to H.R. 3590 directly appropriates funds for community health centers (CHCs). These funds would not be covered by the annual … More

$541,000 in Stimulus Money Creates 1.62 Jobs and a Climate Scandal

Penn State University professor Michael Mann, creator of the infamous hockey stick curve and one of the climate scientists under attack in Climategate, is not only warning people of catastrophic global warming, but he’s using tax dollars to stimulate the economy at the same time: “Climategate scientist Michael Mann received a $541,000 National Science Foundation grant under the stimulus bill passed by Congress in February. According to the government’s transparency website on stimulus spending, the grant has generated 1.62 jobs and is less than 50 percent complete (that’s $334,000 per … More

    Rethinking Big Government

As Congress returns to Washington, the crucial decisions that await lawmakers will have enormous financial ramifications for the country for years to come. House and Senate leaders continue their struggle to land a health care bill on the President’s desk this month, even though proposed legislation would add to the federal deficit long-term, requires states to spend more on programs they are currently seeking to cut back on, and slam Americans of all incomes with new taxes. Accompanying the health care debate is the attempt to raise the ceiling on … More

    Arms Control Folly

On January 12th William Hartung posted a criticism of Ariel Cohen’s January 8th New York Times op-ed on the START follow-on treaty. Instead of a substantive response, Hartung has created a straw man, proceeds to valiantly demolish it, and in the process twists our op-ed. Hartung charges us with being misleading and alarmist. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our main concern is that the START follow on treaty may not adequately address nuclear modernization, verification, and will link the performance of the treaty to limitations on missile defense. … More

Another Government Boondoggle or Worthwhile Investment?

With all the money that has been shelled out through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Act, it turns out that the State department has its hand out, too. The State Department is requesting funding for a Foreign Affairs Security Training Center — to provide U.S. diplomats, or at least those charged with protecting them, with a greater set of survival skills. Just this New year’s Eve, the killings of seven CIA employees at the CIA’s base in Khost Province, Afghanistan, near Pakistan, was a deadly reminder of … More

Apparently, Censorship Is Not Enough In China

Google, which was censoring its searches in compliance with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) demands, still faced cyber attacks. Google announced that it is “no longer willing to continue censoring [its] results on Google.cn” after facing “a highly sophisticated and targeted attack on [Google’s] corporate infrastructure originating from China.” David Drummond, Senior Vice President for Corporate Development and Chief Legal Advisor, wrote on Google’s official blog that the primary purpose of the attack was to gain access to the “Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.” Google made this statement after … More

No Cameras in Prop 8 Marriage Case

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 late yesterday that a federal judge in San Francisco had acted improperly in altering longstanding rules barring the televising of federal court proceedings. As a result, the federal trial of Proposition 8, the state constitutional amendment on the definition of marriage adopted in November 2008 by California voters, will not be broadcast to the nation via YouTube, posting to the Internet, or any other medium. The ruling is a victory for proponents of the amendment, who argued that the presiding judge in the case, Vaughn … More
