  • Morning Bell: Behind Closed Doors, Unions Win, You Lose

Yesterday, President Barack Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and nine other lawmakers met face-to-face for seven hours to resolve differences between the House and Senate health care bills. At the same time these talks were going on, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, Service Employees International Union President Andy Stern and United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger met with other Obama administration officials in a separate room in the White House. This all comes after these same labor leaders met personally with Speaker Pelosi yesterday, and after they met face-to-face with President Obama in the White House on Monday. Despite then-candidate Barack Obama’s explicit promises to the American people, absolutely none of these meetings were open to the public or televised on C-SPAN. In fact, Politico reports: “Those involved in the talks sought to keep details of their progress under wraps.”

And just what deals were Big Labor, the leftist majorities in Congress and the Obama administration making behind closed doors? How to pay for President Obama’s likely $1 trillion health care plan without raising taxes on one of the President’s most loyal constituencies: labor unions. Specifically, Big Labor reportedly has struck a deal with health care negotiators to exempt union members from the 40% excise tax on high-priced health insurance premiums. By some estimates, the tax would hit one in four union members. Now Big Labor will get all of the big government health care spending they always wanted, but they will not have to pay for it.

And Obamacare’s Big Labor handouts don’t end there. The legislation also sets aside $5 billion to subsidize the costs of employer health benefits for early retirees. As Heritage fellow James Sherk notes, few nonunion employers, of course, pay pension and health benefits for workers to retire at 55. And then there’s the small business exemption from the employer mandate for businesses with less than 50 employees. At first this applied to all small businesses, but after aggressive lobbying by Big Labor, non-unionized construction businesses were unexempted. Big Labor lobbyists explicitly admitted they wanted to use Obamacare’s job-killing employer mandates as a competitive advantage to drive non-unionized firms out of business.

So where does the White House and Congress propose to regain the revenue lost from exempting unions from the health care excise tax? The people who fund job creation: investors. The Obama administration wants to apply the Medicare payroll tax not just to wages but to capital gains, and for the first time ever, to dividends and other forms of investment income. This tax will hit seniors the hardest since many of them live off their dividend and interest income, in addition to their pension and Social Security checks. But it also hurts us all since high taxes on capital gains, dividends, interest and business income increase the cost of capital, thus depressing investment at the very time the economy needs new investment to grow and create jobs.

Big Labor’s high wages and inflexible work rules have already bankrupted our nation’s once proud automobile industry. Across the country, their early retirement and exorbitant pensions are bankrupting states. The health insurance excise tax was once the signature health care spending cost cutter of Obama’s entire health care plan. Now it has been gutted at the altar of Big Labor power. The big loser in all of these cases is you, the American taxpayer.

    1. Mike, Columbus says:

The transfer of wealth, destruction of capitalism, spread of soclialism, and stampede on the Constitution continue unabated. Obama, Reid, Pelosi, and their minions care nothing the Americans and only about the expansion of their tyrannical powers. Denial of second amendment rights is not far away.

    2. DAVID KATTAR says:

WHEN WILL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WAKE UP. THERE ARE NO FREE LUNCHES.

    3. Whicket Williams Kin says:

These people are so stupid they will destroy the country to feather their nests WE must stop them, by any means we can, or by by U.S.of A.

    4. Mike Baker - McKinne says:

This administration is very dangerous to the United States…..mounting national debt will be fatal to our standard of living and industrial markets, not to mention this tax and spend mentality will not create jobs but continue to send them to low cost countries….I work for a multinational company and every day I see a continuous push to locate operations in China and India. The US economy will never recover under this policy approach to governing our once great country.

    5. DAVID KATTAR says:

WHAT WE SEE GOING ONTODAY IS BEYOUND BELIEF. WE PROMISES BEENING BROKEN TIME AND TIME AGAIN. DEALS BEING CUT THAT WOULD INSURE A VOTE. THE MAJORITY OF OUR REPRESENTATIVE HAVE NO RESPECT FFOR OUR LAWS ARE THE PEOPLE THEY REPRESENT. GOD HELP US.

    6. Turner, Massachusett says:

The trillion dollar question is where and on whom is the cost for all these favors being funneled? All states are carrying Nebraska and Floridian seniors mandates as well as their own, and now all of us are subsidizing Union members. Why do they get preference and not me other than they are political mechanisms within an Obama organization? This has to be in some way a criminal act.

    7. toledofan says:

This bill and, especially, the process of it's development for passage is a pathetic example of how the Democrats have transformed themselves into a group of elitest pompous asses who have no regard for the country or the common man. It becomes obvious, each day, that they, the Democrats, can't be trusted with managing our country, the economy or the military. If they pass this bill, the shame and backlash it's going to create will be felt for many years to come. The legacy of this Congress will be that of a bunch of liers, thieves and crooks.

    8. BobPDX says:

Well of course unions will win. This another one of Obama's "Big Lies", write out of Cloward Piven.

Americans are too smart though and thanks to the internet we can educate each other every day about his transparent lies.

Shame on him and his ilk to underestimate our ability to reason and think.

Obama's big plans are caving in on him…

    9. dennis l, austin, te says:

      "no taxation without representation"

    10. Recruiter says:

Obama is doing exactly what he is programmed to do. He and his band of thugs want to bankrupt the American economic system so that they can rebuild it according to their corrupt Marxist ideologies. Goodbye Capitalism-Hello Communism. Our only hope begins November 2010 when we can start the process of voting these BUMS out of office.

    11. Sharon, Minnesota says:

      I'm all shocked and stuff.

    12. Harry, Illinois says:

It just goes to show everyone, there is no truth or transparency in this current administration or congress. They are all a bunch of Pinochios. If their noses get and longer, they won't be able to stand in front of their bathroom mirrors. This just goes to show you their contempt for the American People. I hope they get what they deserve come election time. From now on people, if they have currently served two or more terms, vote them OUT. Let the words VOTER MANDATED TERM LIMITS ring loud in their ears.

    13. Mary.... WI says:

We need a president that is honest and humble with a "get it done" mentality. We need SARAH PALIN! This woman wouldn't put up with any kind of corruption. I trust her to make the right decisions on most issues domestic and foreign. She's NOT "stupid" as some people claim her to be. She IS a diamond in the rough and I would trust her with my life.

    14. Wm, Ky says:

I must agree with Mr. Rush Limbaugh………..that this is all intentional and has little to do with health care and merely seeks to destroy an already teetering Democracy. Thanks Democrats for all you do, and have done.

    15. Jonathan Seid, Willi says:

The startled woman said, "Snake! I brought you in out of the cold and nursed you back to health! Snake! Why did you bite me?" Replied the Snake, "You knew I was a snake when you brought me in, biting is what I do."

Expecting liberals not to tax and overspend, is expecting the snake not to bite.

Expecting liberals to be anything but what History has shown them to be, is to deny what is written and known about them. I do recall that the then Senator Obama, was classified one of the 'most liberal' in the US Senate.

Republican Party leaders: Why should I trust you to field candidates and to defend Conservative values when recent History shows that you failed to meet the challenge of the man from Illinois? You are making it easy for me to support a third party.

    16. Bobbie - AL says:

And, We The People, get shafted! I am astounded that more people haven't already picked up on this with all the other actions this administration has taken. I know there are more of "us" against this administration's movement than "them" who are for it. Hopefully, in November 2010, we can take our Country back and get back to Our Founding Fathers' intent in the Constitution. I'm just not sure that enough of the "Sleeping Giant" has awakened!

    17. Paullette, Wisconsin says:

WOW — We get to pay the bills, not only for all the people in Nebraska, but now, for anyone who goes union !

Margaret Thatcher: "The trouble with Socialism is, sooner or later you run out of other people's money."

    18. Mike Bochert, Minnea says:

In the House Bill, the early retirees get $10B available immediately as a supplement to their existing health insurance. I don't understand why this point has not been brought front and center in bold, screaming type. It is an outrageous repayment for union election support. I would like whoever the sponsors of this provision are to stand up, admit it and defend it.

    19. John Kearney-Illinoi says:

They all Lie but i can see why. They are following their leader, Obama. The greatest LIAR!

      See you in November!

    20. cathy, texas says:

I agree with all of the above? My question is, what can we do? I am willing to do what I can to help vote these people out of office, but what can someone like me do? I am asking the question quite seriously. Cathy

    21. Sylvia Martinez says:

We must stop these people in Congress before we have no country to fight for.

Not only are they destroying our heritage; but they are making themselves into

dictators, and we there pawns. This must be done peacefully; but it has to be done soon. The American people have to become knowledgeable about what our government is doing to our Constitution and our American way of life. Each of us must continue to voice our thoughts and continue to address anyone and everyone we may meet daily. We cannot afford to nap while our country is being slowly taken away from its' people.

    22. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

There is nothing honorable or trustworthy about anything in this Administration or the Democratic majority running the Legislature.

There is no courage in the Republican Party minority. If there were, they would be fighting all this anti-American hooliganism with every legal means available.

Is there no way we the people can file a class action suit and work towards impeachment and/or putting these treacherous traitors in jail? That's where they belong because of their abuses!

It was a DISASTER when the liberal/socialist Democrats were given the majority and a CATASTROPHE when Obama was elected!

    23. Richard Kumicich 46 says:

This is the kind of revelation that begs for wide spread distribution. I know the liberal media is impossible, but I would think that conservative media, both print and broadcast would be sure the word got out there.

I'd like to somehow get a copy of this story to A. Barry Rand, the CEO of AARP.

    24. Jeanne Stotler, Wood says:

I agree with the Hon. Wilson "YOU LIE" certainly he should be impeached, but first we need to win over the house and Sen. 2010.

    25. Paul Schwab , Center says:

We cannot stop this corruption until we unite as a Country and force TERM LIMITS from Supreme Court to local levels of Government. These folks in Washington have been elected by US, or should I say some of them by ACORN AND THE CORRUPT UNIONS. They can be removed if we vote them out.

God bless the Tea Party and the Liberty groups in our Country, who are definitely making a difference.

Let's not sit back and let others act. JOIN A LIBERTY GROUP AND SPEAK UP. WE NEED MORE GLENN BECK'S AND SARAH PALIN'S in this County. THE TRUTH WILL PREVAIL.

    26. Rita, Ft. Lee says:

Why can't this be run as an ad on the majornetworks since the ms media will not report any of this news? We need to get all of this information out to the American people so that they can see what is really going on.

    27. Salverda, Hugo, MN. says:

I was taught to respect the law, and so I did for a long time. That was when I used to think that we the people had some representation in the making of those laws. In light of the health care debate, I now understand a different reality; Lobby groups, such as these Unions, give money to help elect those elected officials who are supposed to represent us in making our laws. Lawmakers are not voting in accordance with the will of the constituents who vote for their reelection, they vote in favor of the lobby group who pays for it. A lobby group writes a new law that dictates our behavior and benefits itself. It approaches an elected lawmaker with promises to give money to their campaign in exchange for their vote on passing its' new law. "Our" supposed representatives in making our laws, (those collecting these bribes) are quick to justify this legislative corruption/subversion under the guise of "free speech." In fact this practice dilutes and denies the free speech of real people. I submit that laws made in this manner should get only the respect they deserve, little to none.

    28. Greg, Auburn Hills, says:

It's not your so called BIG LABOR that's the problem here. It's BIG GOV. Listen to what your saying, Aren't YOU asking the people ,who have fought for and earned these benefits, to give them up and "spread the wealth around" ?

These so called BIG LABOR people have done a hell of a good job I think of "spreading" it around with sending there kids to collage and participating in the economy in general. Do you think we have saved all our money?

It's amazing to me how this economic meltdown has brought out all these very shallow minded viewpoints about our once great industries in this country.

This country has allot of problems right now and union workers are not part of it.

Hey Conn, I think you may be a not to deep in the "Closet Liberal".

      What do you think?

      Greg

    29. Ben C. Ann Arbor, MI says:

Clearly the fate of the Health Care Bill will be in the hands of Massachusetts voters. PLEASE, be active in your State and vote for Scott Brown. He very well could be the 41st vote that would cancel the current health care bill. Now is not the time to assume it is a done deal – either way.

    30. Linda, Dallas, Pa says:

Mr Obama has had multiple "READ MY LIPS" moments in a mere year in office. The American people are rapidly losing trust in anything this administration says or does. We have already begun to see the proof last November in New Jersey and Virginia, we are seeing the proof in Ma. and we will continue to see the proof come November of 2010

    31. Walt Selover, San Fr says:

Disgraceful, of course. All I want toknow is how we can get at teearing down the union deal with our unconciounable president. (I can't get myself to use a capital letter to type his title anymore. He is a thief of our tax dollars. He is well aware of it.

      Walt Selover

    32. White Lake, MI says:

Here we go again blaming unions for what ails this country. Unions only make up 12% of the american working force and most of that is government employees.

I notice missing from most of your articles, is the bonus and benefits being paid executives from wall st. and the like.

You might want to show what has happened to the standard of living in the USA since the downfall of organized labor. I am not a member of any union, but get a little perturbed when people will not present facts, only their point of view.

    33. Lloyd Scallan - New says:

As a former union member, I know first hand the financial damage union have cause because of their outragious demands made on employers and their businesses. Just look at the destruction of our merchant marine, steel, auto, and many other indurtries that made this nation so prosperous. Today, unions have morphed into pure Communism, lead by those commetted to the destruction of

our capitalist system. The really scary part is that these so-called leaders don't

care that they are biting the hand that feed them. Just as Obama, they are slaves to their idology of the "transformation" of the United States.

    34. Lynn, Austin says:

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

      Thomas Jefferson

This administration puts the "T" in Tyranny.

      Go Scott Brown!

    35. Coach David says:

Peasants with pitchforks UNITE! The absolute corruption in this administration will surely be our downfall if we don't stop them. These pinheads have failed to adhere to the historical fact that NO civilization in the history of the world has ever taxed themselves into prosperity, and we won't be the first.

The founding fathers envisioned leaders who served the people and railed against tyranny. They must be spinning in their graves as this self-proclaimed ruling class of idiots run us into the ground. May God help us all!

    36. John, in Mesa, Arizo says:

Why are government officials meeting behind closed doors, AGAIN, about health care?!? What do they have to hide?!? Where is the transparency and openness that Obama PROMISED?!? I am calling my congressional representatives AGAIN to say NO to any government health care.

    37. Jim Delaney says:

Of late, there is much wishful thinking among my friends here that this monstrosity will not pass. Why? Because to some here the healthcare bill is so terribly and obviously flawed and noxious–even unconstitutional– that common sense and logic will ultimately prevail inthe once hallowed halls of Congress. But, I tell my friends we're not dealing with common sense. We're dealing with mindless and shameless Progressives who are ideologically committed to driving this country over the cliff into socialism. For me and countless other Americans who've had enough, November 2010 can't come soon enough. Only then can we send our Progressive and neo-Marxist "representatives" home and immediately move to retroactively REPEAL this tyrannical piece of legislation. Sadly, that's America's only recourse now.

    38. Dennis Social Circle says:

This does not suprise me any, the dems, obama and pelosi owe the unions for their win. I just hope that these actions by obama and clan will open peoples eyes and they will realize that he stands for a socialist type government, and that his idea of shareing wealth is we all work for the state and give our money. The state then decides what we need and doles it out as they see fit. The dems have a history of HANDOUTS, and will do all that is necessary to keep people on the role of "guvernment" programs so they maintain controll and power. AMERICAN MADE ONE BIG "A**" MISTAKE IN THE LAST ELECTION, WE CAN NOT AFFORD TO MAKE ANOTHE ONE IN 2010.

    39. Ed-Sugar Land says:

I am sure the President, Pelosi and Reid are so wrapped up in their own agenda now that they don't give us other Americans a thought. We need to get them out of the White House and regain our FREEDOM back. They are stripping us of all the FREEDOMS we grew up with. We need strong Republicans and strong Independents to get out the weak democrats out. This mid-term elections can be our answer if we get together as before.

    40. Jackie Missoula, Mt says:

So what's new? This is what we have become use to in the Obama Regime. He is good at leveling the playing field. I believe that to give one section of the populace preference over another section is unconstitutional something you never hear the so called conservatives in congress saying loudly for all to hear. It is hard to cry foul when you are guilty of the same foul, breaking their oath.

God help us because He is the only one that can.

    41. Bob - Plymouth, MI says:

I don't blame "big labor" for getting whatever they can for their members. I blame all the companies that have given into their demands in the past Now I can add to my list of people to blame the Obama adminstration and the flaming liberals in congress. They don't give one hoot about doing what is right for this country but only leaving their "stamp" on it, no matter how much it hurts.

      God saves us all!

    42. Taylor Ward, Morrist says:

The quietly mentioned "Giant" profit made by the Federal Reserve in 2009, would be almost enough to fund this entire "Socialized Medical Bill" for a few years, without any added costs. Unless, of course, the profit is just more fuzzy Obama math. The figure I saw was over 45 BILLION dollars, and it also reported Mr. Bernanke's total job income to be oly $199,500 approx, with NO extra BENEFITS….Bull! What is the truth on this amount, and why is it not mentioned in the area of possible subsidy of this Socialized Plan? Taylor Ward, Morristown,Tenn.

    43. Bert says:

Has Obama kept any of his promises except change? It remains to be seen if the Republicans can field viable candidates. I see another debacle coming with a third party. The liberals will get re-elected and they will finish our march toward socialism. Good-bye freedom hello big brother.

    44. Brenda Cregor, CA. says:

Though it is deeply troubling and frightening, one must applaud the current administration for being such ardent disciplined students of tyrannical governments of the past which have destroyed liberty and usurped an individual's God-given power to choose.

      And with such swiftness too.

It's as though the foundation for this has been being built for decades ( I was being sarcastic.Yes, I realize it has.).

We have reached the point of "critical mass" in this country. There are just enough liberals in all the branches of government to destroy the Constitution, and just enough ignorant nanny-state-loving citizens ( or non-citizens who vote) to allow them to do so.

Last Spring, I was in Paris, France. A host at the resort at which I was staying began commenting on the state of America's economy (they were in love with Obama then, as they are now). I assured him it was going to get MUCH worse. His countenance dropped and radiated DISBELIEF: The great America fall further into despair? Never!

To France, and all the world, I say: Wave good-bye to the beacon of hope, which was once set apart as a separate peace, an example of how God would want a nation to be set up, and wave hello to a distorted pathetic creation of despotic power, and the dark twisted hopeless manifestation of liberalism which has been allowed to finally take hold and extinguish the last light of the "global hilltop".

To myself and my fellow patriots I say: It's not over.

    45. B.A. in Ohio (doesn& says:

There are things I can control and I have made my opinion heard to my representatives in Congress. There is a day coming when I will vote them out of office in 2012. Tea Party movement (CNN calls them Teabaggers) is an excellent grassroots organization that needs more exposure, the FreedmonWorks non-profit organization is another. I turn to Fox News who has excellent (TRUTH) reporting on current issues in the government who keep you informed are Glenn Beck and his Offical 912 Project outlining fundamental principles America is founded on; O'Reilley Factor; Hannity; Greta Van Susteren. Get involved and stay informed and connect with others against big government. There is always HOPE that Americans will make a common sense decisions when we stay informed on issues and exercise the freedoms that we have by the Constitution. GOD HELP AMERICA!

    46. Taylor Ward, Morrist says:

In regard to yet another "Obama Buy Off", where does the law draw the line differentiating between a legal favor and a downright bribe? Obama has bribed AARP, Senators from Louisianna, and Nebraska, the Pharmacuetical Industry, Big Labor and GOD only knows whom else. This is not trickle down costs, this is Tsunami effect. How much more bending can our Constitution take before it breaks and crumbles? We must stop this MADNESS by 2010, or it is over for America as we once knew her. GOD help us, Please. Taylor Ward, Tenn.

    47. Peter, London, Engla says:

Oh my, What is happening in the US under Obama? This sounds like "Beer and burgers at the White House" for the trade union elite. I lived through a similar period in 1970's England …. we had pay freezes, 3 day weeks, strike after strike in the public and private sectors whilst a labour (socialist) government invited the trade unions to "beer and sandwiches at No 10" with the Prime Minister. The results were never good…. It appears that Obama wishes to copy the most anti competitive and restrictive European labour laws and practises and to party with the trade unions … You have my deepest sympathies as such tendencies have brought the competitive position of Europe to its knees and the moral ambivalence of our political elites is truly terrible to behold.

    48. Publius Huldah, Cook says:

Well, why isn't Heritage Foundation shouting from the rooftops that the health scare bills are unconstitutional as outside the legislative powers delegated to Congress in the Constitution? Why aren't you explaining "enumerated powers"? Why aren't you showing why it is not authorized by the "interstate commerce" or the "general welfare" clauses? Why aren't you explaining why health care can not be a "right"? I have already done the work! This is not difficult stuff. I have laid out the arguments. Learn them. Print them. Here they are:

    51. Wallyblu says:

If you want to take the unions influence out of politics just vote for the candidate that has the least union backing. They will get the message.

    52. judy langenbach, cin says:

when you hire crooks from Chicago who are always doing closed door deals, why did you expect them to change their stripes, A thug is a thug just maybe in a more expensive suit,. We need to send funds and support for the Massachusetts election on Tuesday. This is our last hope and we need to rally around our candidate. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.

    53. Wallyblu says:

      For Ken Jarvis;

The union workers aren't any better off than non-union and in some cases they are worse off.

In the town where I live we have several large grocery stores who are unionized and a Wal-Mart. The workers at Wal-Mart are making 1 to 2 dollars an hour more than the union members their benefits are as good or better and they don't have to pay union dues to support leaders who's only interest is to stir up trouble to make themselves seem important.

    54. Bill Mason, Norfolk, says:

We need some congressmen who have the GUTS to stand up for the people that elected them.

    55. Suzanne Clark-Florid says:

The majority of Americans are trusting , non political and too busy with everyday life to be aware of what is happening. Too, although approximately 50% of the country disapproves there are still between 38-39% of the electorate who approve of the Obama message. These are the souls that include the hardcore or are totally oblivious. Me thinks they include those who expect a full free lunch.

Regardless of emails, faxes and telephone calls to offices it appears that POWER is more important than COUNTRY. Let's face it, this latest closed door meeting has absolutely nothing to do with improved health care……..CONTROL & POWER ARE OUR UNDOING.

THIS MAKE ME WANT TO VOMIT!!!!!!!!, but not in less I can vomit on all the jerks we have in Washington. It seems to me that a lot of what is going on is unconstitutional. I see daily comments about what is being done by Washington, but I haven't seen a real effort or a contact where we can make a difference with our comments, etc.

The majority of government activities are clearly unconstitutional.

Yet, there is no one in government sounding the alarm.

Republicans are virtually mute because their hands are just as dirty as the Democrats.

The elitists who crave power because they think they know what is best for you and those who are motivated by material wealth are destroying our freedoms. There is little left for us short of something drastic because the entire system is corrupt. A serious tax revolt should be the first step. Deprive the beast of sustenance and it will shrivel. I am concerned that a far more overt action may be necessary in the near future.

    64. John Gaertner says:

The people of this country keep sending the same legislators back to D.C. We are getting what we deserve. Obama was a member of a church for 20 years in which the pastor said "God damm America". What does that tell you bout the people who elected him.

    65. Arlene, Burlington, says:

When decisions are made behind closed doors, the people lose. Years ago Unions were started because of the treatment of employees. They were very important in those days. Today they are hurting people more than helping them and also aiding to the ruination of the economy. With Obama and his closed meetings, we the people definitely lose.

Detroit is a leftest and Union town. It is the poorest city in the country. They plan on making the rest of the country like Detroit.

    71. Len Cardoza says:

I think that one of the Founding Fathers had the idea that only those that pay taxes should be allowed to vote. Sounds better every time I hear it.

Easy to vote for anything that you don't have to pay for.

    72. Judith in Michigan says:

Sue in Detroit: As a fellow resident in Detroit, I can attest to your statement about Detroit being an extremely poor city. It has the highest rate of people living below the poverty level in the country at 32 1/2 %. It has the lowest high school graduation rate of the entire country which is only one in four. Criminal activity stats are through the roof. Corruption in politics is common-place

So, this says what? Detroit has been a big union town, (sorry, Ken, but union membership doesn't mean better living standards for rank & file, only the officials, but keep trying. You are amusing) and there has not been a Republican mayor since 1961. You would think that the citizens would realize something is wrong here. But it is hard to fight against promised freebies. and complacency.

    73. David A. White says:

The Hertitage foundation bashes the little person for trying to make a living wage. but never a peek from them about the hogs on wall street that steal billions a year. Ceo's and top management that make more in bonus money in a year than an average person makes in a lifetime from wages. I don't know what you think of yourselves, but I know what the average person in this country thinks of you.

    74. Bill, APG, MD says:

This bill is nearly completely saturated in contamination of various flavors. When Brown gets elected in MA on Tuesday and goes to Washington as the 41st vote, the bill will die. When they start over, their required reading should be The Heritage Foundation's Backgrounder article by Edmund F. Haislmaier called "Health Care Reform: Design Principles for a Patient-Centered, Consumer-Based Market". It's a masterpiece of research that advocates putting the patients in control by eliminating the third-party payer. The higher order effects of this single change result in a system of higher quality, better satisfaction, lower cost, and increased access. Contrary to the belief of many, the free market is the solution for health care. Read the article; you'll probably agree. Then tell others about it.

    75. Optimus Maximus B&#0 says:

It remains to be seen if we can return the country to our founding values.

The genius of our Founding Father's requirement that you must be a property owner in order to be allowed to vote is more apparent every day. No one that is not a "net" taxpayer should be allowed to vote.

I believe a return to the founding principles of our constitutional republic will be a long battle, possibly requiring bloodshed in order to re-bind the government with the chains of the constitution.

We have reached levels of political corruption and chicanery scarcely imaginable even two decads ago. Voter fraud and the purchase of the votes of special interest blocks with thinly disguised government benefits has reached epidemic proportions. There is little effort on the part of the government enforcement agencies to prosecute the voter fraud lawbreakers. Indeed one of the most egregious prepretrators, ACORN, is subsidized by the government.

But America has a historical record of being the "first in the world" to achieve many distinguished goals.

First constitutional free market republic, first to coin the phrase "make money" as we were the first civilization in the world to realize value is created by individual's innovative efforts, and not a fixed resource to be divided into ever smaller pieces by the ruling class, first to the moon, first to mass produce autos and other consumer goods by innovation and industrialization, first to conquer the atom, first to do so many things.

So I remain optimistic that we can reclaim our founding principles without bloodshed.

But we should never forget that reclaiming our founding principles without possessing the fortitude and zeal of being willing to shed our blood to win our goal is an very unlikely proposition, because our opponents have no shame, no honor, and do not play by the rules.

2010 is a good year to start the battle.

    76. duelles, santa fe says:

I hate to admit it, but I have become more aggressive towards anyone who expresses support for Obama or his cronies or his programs.

Not by being nasty, but simply by asking them if they understand where money comes from, how much tax is paid and by whom, how much the Government earns above and beyond our taxes and how, and how can health care be a right when it deprives one citizen his property in favor of another citizen. HOW? Rights are equal to all, period.

How can a government do legally that which any othercitizen would be jailed for doing.

    77. Pablo, Palm Coast, F says:

Obama and cohorts care not one iota what the majority of people think. Their mission is to turn America into the next third world country by creating impossible debt, destroying our currency and generating chaotic conditions Socialists need

to bring the people and nation its knees. We have devolved into a nation of idiots utterly bereft of critical thinking skill and frittered away our forefathers' hard won freedoms. Good-bye America.

    78. Val says:

BIG LABOR is so evil! Workers are what's wrong with this country, not corporations! We need to teach these unions a lesson and export all the jobs out of this country. Let's see them whine about health care then, ha!

    79. Joe White, Denison, says:

Add to the list of jobs thrown away by a militant union and the EPA every integrated steel mill in the United States. Tens of thousands were put out of work as the steel mill towns turned into rusty hulks.

We have the iron ore, the coal to make the coke and had the skills to make the best steel in the world. But, they're all gone.

    80. Larry, Miami, FL says:

What's new? Just one more lie by the egotist-in-chief!

    81. john koss says:

Okay here it is!! Stop all this nonsense now America Get off your A…. and vote these bums out. If a municipal (police, fire, sanitation, congress, soldier etc) retires and gets so called Cadillac benefits. Index a tax rate that is fair. What is fair? How about basing it on gross payment out. Let's say you get 25,000.00 pension; maybe fully paid Medical benefits at 12,000 (husband & wife) Combined $37,000. Tax rate 0.00 Kick it up to 50,000 + 12,000; Combined 67,000. Tax rate 2% which would equal a little over $111.00/mo. This would be fixed and permanent. Then as packages increase use the 10,000.00 increment rule. For every 10,000 it would go up 1.5% until you hit a ceiling of 100,000 and it would max at 10%. However these are just numbers but as you can see it would go a long way towards evening out tax burdens. OH ONE OTHER IMPORTANT CONCEPT!!! Federal government would have to cut 3% of its size each year over FIVE years reducing its total size by 15% We also need to change Social Security over a 15 to 20 year period so as not to punish nor dishearten the young wage earners of today. Say we start a 401 program whereby they can put 5% of their income per year away and it is tax free at the end of their working lives. WOW what a concept! In other words start to give this nation back to its people.

Greg from Michigan, You ARE right it's not Union workers fault as to the problems we face. It is for sure a Gov. that has grown corrupt and way to big. Greed has taken over. As for the Unions, Search your History people, Just go back to the early coal mining days in W.V. had it not been for Unions, Pay would be very little, Benefits would be non-existant, And who would stand up for the workers on civil rights and human rights issues in the workplace. Am I saying the ability for corruption does not exist in Unions NO, I am not blind. But, Industry and Unions is what built this country NOT whats tearing it apart. Learn the facts before you accuse. ALL THE FACTS. Whats killing this country is Americans not being Americans, And there are very few Patriots left in this great nation. One Nation UNDER GOD, With Liberty AND Justice FOR ALL.

Lately,It seems like everytime Wastington does something I have to hold onto my wallet. We ( citizens ) keep losing eveeryday.

    85. Eben. Redding, CA says:

Higher wages results in less jobs.

If you join the union you can get on the side of the higher wages and a job. The problem is, when the govt. rigs the game to give the union an advantage it kills the little businesses and the next one to bleed is the consumer.

Unfortunately, the consumer must balance a budget (unlike the Govt. and unions), so cheaper foreign goods are purchased.

So now you have a union that is making something they can't sell. So do they change quickly to producing more efficiently and profitably like any small businessman would have to do? No, they go back to the Govt for another set of regulations designed to help them and further limit competition.

It is an easy progression to follow but a hard one to break. Maybe when we see "Made in china" on the bottom of our houses we will all get it.

    86. Jeanne Stotler, Wood says:

My late husband was a member of the "Motormen and coach operators" afl-cio, the union did good back in the '50's and 60's. They prevented Co. from working drivers more than 8 hours, and giving suffucient time off between runs, this was also a safety issue for the passengers, we got a decent pay,and the Co.paid 1/2 of our medical Ins. When he died, in '76, I was suppose to get a percentage of his retirement, things had changed, I got nothing, and never got a copy of his papers, I was approached about joining a Nurses Union, I declined and I am not sorry, I needed the money I was making to support my family not some Union big shot. We have crooks running this country and we all need to be VERY vigilant and vote this mess out, then prosecute everyone of them for treason and corruption.

They inturn use some this money to bash everything the republicans stand for. They give the DEM party millions to be used for political tactics against all opposition

Recently, a lady in California said she was happy with Obama cause he is sending her money. When asked where the money comes from she said, "I don;t know." Asked if she thinks its free she said, "of course it is, its Obama money."

The reporter then said, where do you think he gets the money? She replied"I don't know, its Obama money that he has in his account."

Well, perhaps we can get some of that Obama money to pay for this despicable fiasco? After all, its free, right? Right????

OMG, its all becoming so surreal anymore!

(Reagan once said the most scary words in the English language are "I'm from the government & I'm here to help you." Now, we can add to that scary speech list, "its free Obama money from his account!")

    95. robert Whitfield says:

A lot of people belive the BIG BUSINES properganda, that we

don't need Unions, Unions don't do anything for you and the

the CORPERATONS/Others pay just as much and provide just

as many benefits, which is nothing but a BIG LIE. They would

like nothing better if the Unions would just disapear so they

the UNIONS, that's exactly what would happen. I'm not

saying this becuase I'm UNION, I'm NOT. I'm saying this

      Because it't TRUE.

    96. John Michel says:

I have just one question, where are all the decent servants in congress while all this is going on? Why aren't they screaming from the tops of the buildings, holding town hall meetings to counter these crooks from Obama, the unions and all the legistators like Pestalosi and her cohorts down to the local legislators who have their hands in the tilt?

I am so sad and concerned to see our country being stolen from under its citizens by these crooks especially those out of Chicago. The sad part of it all is that there are no more decent legislators, Republicans or Democrats left to fend for the citizens of this country. I pray each night that we will be able to undo all this damage once these crooks, Democrats and Republicans, are thrown out of office. It is no wonder people all over the country are listening to Glenn Beck looking for a way to throw these bums out.

    97. Jennifer, Idaho says:

I didn't think this article was about the the advantages or disadvantages of unions. The unions are getting an unconstitutional deal and it is being paid for by taxpayers. I have no problem with union members, I simply do not want to pay for the union members healthcare plans. Or anyone else's. I know too many people with small businesses who work hard to pay for their own insurance and healthcare, don't have tax breaks for purchasing their own insurance, and can't afford a powerfull lobyist to go to Washington and get them a sweet deal!! We supposedly elect politicians to represent the views and needs of the average American, not special interests. It is disheartening to get nothing but more taxes from our vote.

I think Judith in Michigan sums it up nicely.

As long as my checking account is free, I can get a good rate on a savings account or loan, and pay no user fees, I could care less how much the big bad bankers make. I'm sure if the 'hogs on wall street' were actually stealing money, we would know about it, since this administration loves to demonize them. If you are referencing the bailout, that was OBAMA's administration STEALING TAXPAYER money to give to the 'hogs on wall street'. Mr. D. W., you should point your gun in the direction of the real thief and tell this administration to stop stealing OUR MONEY.

    100. Phil, Richmond, VA says:

The unions are and have always been a cancer within any organization that it thugs its way into. The real questions to research at this moment are: when do these Collective Bargaining Agreements expire? Who will be negotiating with the union on behalf of us tax payers? And will these negotiators take a hard line against costs (cadillac medical plans, pension plans, work rules, and the numerous other cost issues that are not in line with reality), or will they just roll over and agree to higher wages, more benefits, etc. when the rest of us are doing our darndest to make ends meet? I can imagine that the Federal negotiators who are "representing" the best interests of the tax payer will be taking their direction from the union lovers at the very top; therefore, more costs to the tax payers, for perpetuity.
