  • Morning Bell: The First Step Is Admitting You Have A Problem

It may have taken President Barack Obama two weeks to deliver a speech on the failed Flight 253 bomb attack without blaming President Bush, but he should still be commended for finally owning up for the massive intelligence failure. President Obama told the American people yesterday: “The U.S. government had the information . . . to potentially uncover this plot and disrupt the attack. Rather than a failure to collect or share intelligence, this was a failure to connect and understand the intelligence that we already had. … Ultimately, the buck stops with me . . . and when the system fails, it is my responsibility.”

But while the President is right to admit the system failed and that it is his fault that it did, he is still clueless about why. The President promised he would direct “our intelligence community immediately begin assigning specific responsibility for investigating all leads on high-priority threats so that these leads are pursued and acted upon aggressively — not just most of the time, but all of the time.” And he added: “In addition to the corrective efforts that I’ve ordered, I’ve directed agency heads to establish internal accountability reviews, and directed my national security staff to monitor their efforts.”

But this failure of our intelligence system was not just about lack of accountability. It was about empowerment – or more specifically the lack thereof. The system simply moved too slowly because there was a lack of urgency about the war on terror. Intelligence personnel were not empowered to employ their ingenuity and resourcefulness to connect the dots. Adding layers of “internal accountability reviews” will only make the bureaucratic stupor worse. It is people’s resourcefulness and initiative that will stop the next terrorist attack, not a bureaucratic process.

And from the day he stepped into office, President Obama’s actions have done nothing but kill the initiative and morale of our intelligence employees. From day one, he made it clear that he believes the war on terror is a civilian criminal justice problem to be managed, and not a war to be won. That is why he took the responsibility for interrogating detainees from the CIA and gave it to the FBI. That is why he has failed to seek the renewal of key investigatory authorities authorized under the USA Patriot Act, instead settling for a six-month extension tacked on to the Defense appropriations bill. It is why instead of promising victory in Afghanistan, he sent fewer troops than were required and gave al Qaeda a set date for our withdrawal. It is why he has failed to approach Congress with legislation establishing a legal framework for handling terrorism detainees. It is why he is pushing for Khalid Sheik Mohammed to be prosecuted in civilian court despite his previous guilty plea in a military tribunal. And most demoralizing of all, President Obama has allowed Attorney General Eric Holder to re-investigate nearly a dozen CIA interrogators and contractors for their past efforts in the war on terror.

This is an issue of leadership. The President of the United States sets the tone and then the message filters down. Our intelligence personnel failed to follow-up on the leads that could have prevented Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab from even boarding the plane because their leader had sent the message that fighting the war on terror was not a high priority. Finally, it now seems that the President is ready to start acting like protecting the American people is not just a duty: it is his first duty.

      Great Headline

    2. Turner, Massachusett says:

To your entire story, I am confident all this is part of Obama's strategy to install chaos in order to break down the system in preparation to take secure control over the whole. The reason Obama wants to saddle the states with a healthcare expenses is so he can come in and offer loans and eliminate their sovereignty via debt (something he learned from the Chinese). He has put the security forces to sleep with his non-war rhetoric (I like how your comment "bureaucratic stupor"). I think we should have our military conducting the airport security!

    3. Dean-Texas/Alaska says:

It's a start. Now if he'll admit the same thing about the economy, we can start an authentic recovery.

    4. Miles A. Brumberg, D says:

The President is clueless or chooses not to do that which is necessary to protect this country from attack. This is terrorism, not a street crime. These are terrorists, not perpetrators in Cop Speak. To consider their religious background and experiences is important. It may be profiling to some but it is not discrimination in terms of the civil right laws which the Democrat Party has twisted and contorted to allow non citizen combatants to be tried in a civilian court instead of a military court. And for Pete's Sake, get rid of all the "Jamie Gorelick's" who still supposedly investigate these events on behalf of the American citizenry. No American should EVER die because of a terrorist attack. In the words of General George S. Patton, make the poor dumb bastards who tried to carry out a terrorist attack die instead!

    5. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

Security of this nation, people and the economy are not at the top of the list. The liberals have seen fit to gut the CIA,FBI,DEA. and the other agencies that may be able to help in this process. When pelosi and crowd pushed for prosecution of the people that were thought to have been guilty of, they lost the will to gain information much less share. If I were in their shoes I may very well do the same. The current power people in DC are to determined to see this country fail and obama is to quick to go around the world and tell how wrong the American people have been. When all this is puy together it is a plan for failure for the country.

    6. Karen Cooper says:

Thank you for pointing out the Eric Holder re-investigation issue. Obama has tied the hands of our intelligence community, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. We need leadership and a leader that supports the American people (those serving and the typical citizen). Our enemies see our weakness they also see the chain of leadership this country is stuck with for the upcoming years, If not Obama, then Biden, and lord help us if not Obama or Biden, Nancy Pelosi………..what have we allowed to occur.

    7. Rob Baker, Park City says:

I think you are kidding yourself if you think Obama is really serious. Obama is kidding himself by pretending to be serious. We are kidding ourselves by thinking anyone is paying much attention.

    8. Ben C, Ann Arbor says:

I recall President Bush commenting to the media that newly elected President Obama will be presented the same intel on a daily basis that I get and will soon realize the situation faced by our country. He will then be required to make the same decisions I have made during my administration. It only took a year but President Obama has finally seen the light – yes, we are at war.

    9. Prevailer76AZ says:

I remember President Truman making the statement, "The buck stops here," meaning at his desk. However, right or wrong, he also took action to dismiss whomever he considered were not complying with matters in the best interest of the country.

In the case of Obama, his assuming responsibility is nothing more than a false ray of hope that he is finally truly accepting blame rather than laying it on someone else.

But do not become complacent. He often says things he doesn't mean, while behind closed doors he attends to matters within his own agenda of complete control of our lives and country. Transparency indeed!

    10. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

There is no commom sense (wisdom) present in this Administration and Congress, not excluding the Judiciary either.

I believe that Obama and his Progressive followers are all puppets to their nasty ideology and thuggery style of politics.

I do not believe that Obama and his clique like America. They all are on record as ultra critical of the Constitution and American Values and Tradition.

They are so reminiscent of the Hippies of the 60's-70's when they wanted everything in our society torn down, yet had nothing of greater Value to replace it. They turned to Marxists, Socialists, Progressives, "Liberals" who also offer nothing of true Value.

This Administration in power has no clue in regards to Reality. I think that in a way their subconscious minds are soft on terrorism because they can identify with it. Both seek the demise of the "Fundamental" USA. The progressives are the domestic terrorists stepping all over the Constitution and peoples' Rights with their government schemes, while the Jihadists violate individuals' Rights by killing people.

One wants to kill your 'mind', the other wants to kill your 'body'.

Obama and his Gang are incompetent , to say the least, and America will not be safe as long as they are allowed to go on as they have.

'See' and 'Hear' beyond their masks of civility and blathering lies to find the real intent of these Anti-Americans.

    11. Lloyd Scallan - New says:

From the very start of his campaign, Obama has said nothing. He reads the words (someone else wrote) from his teleprompter. He lied and distorted the truth to get elected (assisted by the news media).

Since he took office, nothing has changed. He still reads what is written for him or what he, or his "advisors" think, we want to here. He is continuing to put all of us at risk by appointing a bunch of incompetent czars and advisors that cannot do the jobs their positions call for. As long as they have the same socialist idology, he will continue to take hollow blame for their failures, but will not dismiss any of them. He will continue to do nothing to help this nation survive and will continue to do everything he can to "transform" it into his idea of a socialist utopia.

    12. AD says:

Someone once said that the secret to great acting was sincerity, and that once you faked that, the rest was easy.

      B+…still needs work!

    13. Whicket Williams Kin says:

I Just pray the there is something left of out economy to save after we get rid of the communist who want to be boss

    14. Tater Salad says:

Since the President took two weeks to give his speech on the failed attempt and knew about this person before hand, the question should be asked: "Would you have placed your children on the same flight"? I don't think so! This President is pathetic and is in way over his head.

    15. Blair, Franconia, NH says:

This happened on Obama's watch. It's HIS FAULT, not Bush's.

He should have taken the bull by the horns and said "I was wrong." Did he? No, he didn't. He's a day late and a dollar short. It's too late to say "I'm sorry." If that "bloke with boomsy-woomsy in his knickers" had succeeded, then Al Qaeda would be rejoicing. Make no mistake, if Al Qaeda wins, we'll all be speaking Arabic, paying higher taxes because we're infedels under Sharia, and being forced to convert to Islam.

By then, we'll have a theocracy like Iran and Afghanistan under

the Taliban. By then, it will be too late to say "I'm sorry"

and by then, those who follow Sharia, will have what they've always wanted—–a Caliphate.

    16. Dave, Laguna Niguel says:

Liberals have no clue how the private sector works nor how to PROTECT people. Their emphasis is social engineering: women in combat, women in the fire dept(ever seen a woman who could hoist a 200 lb man or woman and carry them down a ladder?! Of course not. They just lower the standards!). Thats the liberal way, just lower the standards! Any wonder why kids coming out of high school can not read, write, spell, add/subtract? But they FEEL GOOD CAUSE THEY WAS GRADIATED DONTCHAKNOW!? Now we have an inexperienced president appointing inexperienced/unqualified "people" in positions of authority, and many of us will die because of ludicrous liberal prescriptions! Napolitano is a complete JOKE further evidenced by her insane comment that the system worked, which should not have been uttered by anyone other than the terrorists! Muslim gets on plane with bomb, bomb no go off, easy fix coming. Who's next under this un-Godly administration. Uncannily God has spoken to the global warming hoax, liberals too stupid to get the message. Another message is coming to you, so its only a matter of time for you lunatics to right this ship. You have Heritage and you have the Constitution to guide you so follow rather than trash you fools! Do you lefties really think conservatives WANT dirty air, filthy water, a value-less dollar, airplanes blown out of the sky, etc? All we want is the TRUTH and proper proposals to handle the situation, not FEELGOOD/ineffective/costlty lunatic left prescriptions like PC racial profiling which is designed to make sorry attorney's jobs easier!

    17. Charlie Lyon, Ithaca says:

The problem that most media have in regurgitating this president's words is that they've bought into the notion that his WORDS are important: how he says them; how tough he can sound; how impressive he looks. They continue to ignore the fact that HE HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING SIGNIFICANT that moves America forward. His lack of action; his clear lack of principled action, his naiveté (or calculated re-working of our military, economy, society) is WAY more significant in moving us backward. We would be healthier, safer, economically sounder, and more united if he would stop meddling, muddling and pretending that he is so important to the world.

    18. Mboro, TN says:

If "He" is to be commended for his first obvious step after Napolitano's reasuring comments, WHY? He and his people, including the media have left out the eyewitness reporting that the bomber didn't have a passport and needed technical assistance getting on the plane.

"He" seems to leave out pertinent information, which is also conveniently and correspondently left out, by "His" media outlets.

No, I don't think he's on the up and up. I believe his writers are giving him diction for what they think the people want to hear and with no regard for the truth whatsoever.

    19. Jim - Ohio says:

IT IS A SAD DAY IN AMERICA WHEN WE HAVE LEADERS

LIKE WE NOW HAVE, AND HALF OF THE COUNTRY IS TOO

STUPID TO SEE WHAT'S GOING ON. THEY WERE GIVEN

ENOUGH INTEL, SHORT OF AN E-MAIL FROM JOCKEY BOMBER, TO STOP THIS, BUT TOO STUPID TO GET IT, AND THESE SAME IDIOTS WANT TO RUN HEALTH CARE.!!!!! GOD HELP US.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    20. Bob Veigel. Arlingto says:

Obama has no problems. He is doing exactly what he wants to do, destroy America. Why are people having so much trouble understanding this. Ignorance and stupidity or both. Wake-up Americans or soon America will be no more.

    21. Ove Striegler, Houst says:

I urge you as an organization to request all conservative members of Congress (the Senate and the House) to rise up on floor of the Senate and the House every day and shout and demand that all money committed and/or any future committments to ACORN be stopped immediately, and that ACORN not be allowed to have anything to do with the U. S. Census or any other federal program.

    22. Harry, Illinois says:

Thanks Prevailer 76AZ. I was going to bring up President Truman. I wonder how many more Presidents he's going to emulate before he leaves office. Maybe he might even have a little left over for GWB.

    23. David Sayers Goldsbo says:

If the buck stops with Obama, then shouldn't he be the one to go? Let's see if we can make that happen for him. This country will be a lot safer without him and the rest morons running around DC.

Get rid of all of them and make it soon.

    24. Carol, AZ says:

      Dear Washington Leadeership,

I have taken the time to connect some dots.

The American public has felt obvious discomfort regarding the war on terrorism.

Robert Kennedy who murdered by a radicalized Muslim.

In 1972 during the Murnich Olympics, athletes were kidnapped and murdered by Muslim extremists.

In 1979 the US embassy in Iran was taken over, personnel held hostage for days, by Muslim extremist students.

In the 1980's a mumber of Americans were kidnapped in Lebanon by Muslim extremists.

In 1983, the US Marine barracks in Beinut was blowned-up by Muslims extremists

In 1985 the cruise ship Achille Lauro was hijacked Killing a 70 year old passenger who was wheel chair bound, and tossed into the sea.

In 1985 TWA flight 847 was hijacked in Athens.

A Navy diver murderd , shot in head, dumpped on the tarmac for the world to witness.

In 1988 Pam Am flight 103 was bombed.

1993 the World Trade Center was bombed the first time.

In 1998 the US Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were also bombed.

On 9/1/01 Muslim extremists killed thousands of unarmed civilians using box cutters and planes as weapons, also entering the country on expired visas.

In 2002 reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murder with accountability spread across the world wide web.

The USS Cole was blown-up in Yamem.

Recently we can add 31 military personnel wounded and 13 soldiers murdered at Fort Hood , TX.

Most recently, the attempt to blow-up another plane Xmas day.

Unaccountable number of civilians in other parts of the world murdered in the name of Jhard.

In our US courts we have a turf war over "which court," military or cilivian, will bring to trial, the murders within.

We continue to replay the indecision," where" to transfer the detainees at Gitmo.

We have lawyers lining up questioning the rights of security personnel who are accused of profiling men entering our country from known terrorist countries between the ages of 17-?.

Further, the press has publicly dumb-down the very job we have asked these MEN AND WOMEN TO perform as part of our Homeland Security.

Can you imagine how weak we appear to the rest of world as we parade our indecisons.

      When will common sense prevail.

We are fighting a war on terriorism.

In war accused murders are stripped of all civial rights until trial.

We must secure our borders and all other entries to the USA.

We must secure all air travel, US postal transfers, cargo shipments at all ports of entry ,

We must add requested personnel to our other war, which continues on our borders .

All law enforcement agencies must be given the software utilized by all Federal law enforcement agencies for instant surveillance over- view.

If the word "profiling" for surveillance overview becomes too political offending, I'm certain re-naming it honoring the he World Trade Center victems will bring a certain consciousness to the

      America and to Washington.

There are many more dots that need connecting but I'm certain you get the point.

    25. steve st.louis says:

He shouldnt get credit for anything . As always he only made the statement after being called on it . As with ayers ,wright, jones, and everything he does , he only makes a statement that he thinks the public wants to hear "after" he is publicly called out on it . That comes from his handlers and means nothing .

    26. Tim, Virginia Beach says:

They are not terrorists according to this new regime…under section 948b of the new federal budget they were renamed to "Alien Unprivileged Enemy Beligerents". Why can't they use their own language? Too wimpy in the eyes of the informed constituency, I am sure. I'd rather call them terrorists like GW Bush.

    27. Norm, Port Townsend, says:

It wouldn't hurt if he took the CIA out of the climate change business . . .

    28. Jeanne Stotler, wood says:

10 mos to Elections 2010, In the meanwhile we MUST be alert. Obama is not going to fire anyone, they have too much on him and he can't afford the public to hear it, and they would bring him down if they thought it would save their sorry behinds. The are a lot of really nice honest conservatives in local juridictions that will probably come our for national when the time is right, I know we need to get rid of Connolly and Moran, also need to assure Term limits, being a member of Congress was not mnt to be a lifetime job, nor was it designed to make millionaires, somewhere along the line it was changed ad they seem to think they are the bosses and we work for them(to furnish taxes)

    29. Leith Wood, Virginia says:

Great piece, until the last sentence. Obama can't even call the Christmas plane attack a Muslim terrorist attack. He wants this whole thing to go away and will give the country more smoke and mirrors.Wait until the ghastly trial in NYC with more attacks on Bush, the CIA and America itself. More Saul Alinsky at work. It's all about B.O. God help us.

    30. dicbax says:

Obama admitted that "the buck stops here" but that admission has little to do with responsibility. He has demonstrated that he could care less about fault, responsibility, or performance.

"so I've said it, now that should shut'em up at Fox"…

      Some President!!

It's hard to respect the office when the man in the office has no integrity.

It is time the people in this country start wising up to the fact that obama is not making mistakes. He is doing exactly what he intends to do.He want to destroy our way of life and then take over as a dictator for "our own good".The members of congress better start demanding that there be a stop to this or understand we will elect people who will, regardless of which party they belong to.They should be screaming on the floor of the house and senate that this bill cannot be done behind closed doors. Pelosi, reid and obama need to be removed from office.

    33. Ernesto,Chappaquiddi says:

Janet Napolitano heads for sunny Spain to conference with other clueless countries on airport security. The Israel model is the supreme example. Israel has been doing airport security since Arafat invented skyjacking many years ago.

As for the President, he is a wrecking ball against Capitalism, seeking to drag Capitalism down, then install near complete Socialism. Jimmy carter was the first Trialateralist to attempt "change". Now Obama is following through on more Adamsky theory of capitalism destruction.

May G_d Have Mercy On Our Immortal Souls!

    34. Emily, Alaska says:

You are right, the President sets the tone and the message filters down. But in this case, there was no need to connect any dots. There was only the need for the State Department to take responsibility as soon as they heard from Abdulmutallab's father and revoke the visa. And as Michelle Malkin correctly points out, he should not have gotten a visa in the first place, certainly not a multiple-entry visa.

In my view Obama is not taking responsibility, but simply blaming the left's favorite whipping boy, the intelligence services.

    35. Al, The Villages, Fl says:

I agree that admitting there is a problem is the first step but in the case of President Obama, when has anything he said had any correlation to what he, his administration or the dems in congress is doing?

    36. Al Reasin says:

I would add that who, except the most dedicated operative, would push the envelop and place his career in jeopardy by stepping on more connected toes; toes that were not doing their job. Too many are under the bus already. Been there, done that and paid the price in private industry, except I had a VP that came to my aid once he found out what had happened to me. I wouldn't trust non-leader Obama to come to my aid, as the CIA operatives that followed the Bush Administration's policies have found out.

    37. Harry, Illinois says:

I've never seen a president looking for so many ataboys. He want's a pat on the back for every little problem that surfaces each day. I guess he just doesn't realize that by being PRESIDENT everything he's inherited or happens just goes with the territory. Quit looking for sympathy and excuses. Just do your job. Here's another quote: If U can't stand the heat, get out of the damn kitchen.

    38. Philip, Arizona says:

The liberals and apologists used the military prison at GITMO as a whipping stick against Bush/Cheney as a "payback" for what they thought was a stolen election in 2000. GITMO became a lightening rod for the leftists and Democrats in Congress and their propaganda machines (ABC,NBC,CBS,NPR, NY Times, etc., etc).

So, three terrorists connected with 9-11 were water-boarded to elicit information about additional planned terrorists strikes against US cities, and we're all supposed to get our panties all wadded-up over them? Not!

Our Navy SEAL, Army Rangers, and Marine RECON personnel go through more in training than the GITMO terrorists experienced.

Now we have Obama and Holder wanting to shut down GITMO and bring these maggots to US prisons and US Courts and give them more constitutional provisions than our military folks get under the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice). As for closing GITMO, "be careful what you wish for, you may just get it".

    39. Shirley, Florida says:
