  • Knock Knock! Who's There? It's C-SPAN, Mr. President.

President Barack Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) are planning plenty of health care action in closed-door meetings at the White House today, but there are no lights or cameras.

Now, C-SPAN is calling for the latter.

In a letter to congressional leadership dated December 30, 2009, C-SPAN wrote:

As your respective chambers work to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate health care bills, C-SPAN requests that you open all important negotiations, including any conference committee meetings, to electronic media coverage.

C-SPAN noted that it is willing to commit resources to cover all negotiations and that, to date, it has televised hundreds of hours of committee hearings for public access. More importantly, the network called on the President and congressional leadership to live up to their commitment to transparency:

President Obama, Senate and House leaders, many of your rank-and-file members, and the nation’s editorial pages have all talked about the value of transparent discussions on reforming the nation’s health care system. Now that the process moves to the critical stage of reconciliation between the Chambers, we respectfully request that you allow the public full access, through television, to legislation that will affect the lives of every single American.

Even the mainstream media are picking up on this salient point. From an ABC News report:

The C-SPAN television network is calling on congressional leaders to open health care talks to cameras — something President Barack Obama promised as a candidate.

Instead the most critical negotiations on Obama’s health plan have taken place behind closed doors, as Republicans repeatedly point out…

Obama pledged during a presidential debate in January 2008 that he would be “bringing all parties together, and broadcasting those negotiations on C-SPAN so that the American people can see what the choices are.”

It’s high time he kept his pledge.

I am pleasantly pleased to observer C-SPAN openly rejecting "Lapdog Status" could be all other news sources should pick up a torch and run along side C-SPAN. So-called lame stream media has assumed a "Cheerleading Role" for this Administration long enough; I believe the back lash from The American People is being felt even before the ink dries.

Plus I'd like to see personally who passes out what sweetheart deal to whom and why they did that deal. States Governors and States Legislatures will watch with interest as they prepare potential discovery filings in courts across the Nation.

Dems know what a fire storm is headed their party’s way why else would they be hiding from us all. Congratulations C-SPAN and ABC now that is real journalism and desperately necessary for everyone to watch, well not the cool-aid drinkers.

Objective, investigative reporting is the "DUTY of A Free Press! We are still free …RIGHT?

Hold their feet to the fire and keep them honest Americans are counting on YOU… and Dems WE will WATCH!

we are in a very frightening situation here..what else is going on behind closed doors. when are we going to wake up and realize that campaign promises are just lip service to get elected..corruption is more the reality..very sad

I am so frightened for our country. The progressives, our Congress, and this administration our deliberately sinking this once mighty ship called the United States.

All of these bail-outs, TARP, etc. etc. etc. . . . . until our system collapses.

Are you kiding?? You know as well as all of us that Obama, Pelosi and Reid are not going to come out from the closed door meetings. They thumb their noses at us and they spit in all Americans faces. They want to destroy the United States in any way they can. Just wish we could impeach the whole lot of them. I doubt that GOD even knows what is going on behind those closed doors. Damn scary.

    16. John Longhurst---Mer says:

Those who truly value freedom need to stand up and be counted right now. This applies to a number of areas in which our liberties are under attack by the radical left.

Regarding the government take over of health care it's NOT a done

deal yet. I'm inviting anyone who has not already done so to go

to mikecrapo.com and sign the petition. We've gotten a fairly good response so far but we could use an avalanche of signatures.

Then if you could pass the word along to your friends, relatives,

contacts, people you meet, etc. If everyone does this we can achieve MAXIMUM EFFECT and really send Obama & Company a very

POWERFUL message. Let's get energized and stop the left's radical agenda. God speed and God Bless America.

    17. John Longhurst---Mer says:

I forgot to mention that Mike Crapo is currently serving in the

      U.S. Senate representing Idaho.

Obama is global warming himself. Alot of hot air.

Everything he told us during the campaign was lies, lies and more lies.

    19. Bob, Washington Stat says:

This lying president is the one elected by the people of this country. (assuming that miscounted ballots, dead people etc did not throw the election) Were the voters really unable to perceive before the election that Candidate Obama had no intention of keeping any promise?

    20. Jim Wilson Dallas Te says:

Another response to RandySA,TX….While the past administration was far from perfect, and not nearly conservative enough, their meetings were largely about dealing with keeping it's citizenry safe and that it accomplished. The people that you put in power have little interest in our safety or our financial liquidity, and even less in our free market system. The reason the doors have been closed for the last 12 months is obvious. They want to cram as much of their liberal/left agenda down our throats as they can before they all get fired. November can't come soon enough, and the "conservatives" had better take note and be CONSERVATIVE this time!

    21. Lloyd Scallan - New says:

I am always amazed at those like Randy,SA TX. Eight years ago we did not have a socialist in the White House that finds it not only impossible to keep his campagin pledges, but said anything to get elected. Eight years ago we did not have an unsurpassed lier in the office of the President, protected by the left-wing news media that was responsible to get him elected. Eight years ago we did not need "transparency".

Eight years ago we had at least a semi-honest bunch in Washington. Eight years ago we were not

at war with our government for the very survial of

this nation. Randy, that's why eight years we did not "request" C-Span. We didn't need it.

    22. John Roane Sarasota says:

The US Congress and the White House are afraid of being open with the public. It will only lead to thier destruction in the next election cycle. To stay in power they need to keep thier respective dealings secret.

      DE OPPRESSO LIBRE

    23. Jackson, Dallas, TX says:

Transparency? Does anyone else feel like you are sitting in dentist's chair waiting for an x-ray with a totally opaque lead blanket thrown over you?

Threats of ousting this gang of thugs in upcoming elections does not scare them, they still believe they are invulnerable to political backlash. And in the finish it doesn't matter; the damage will be done if they ramrod this through with 75% dissent from "we the people" – that is what arm-twisting arrogant thugs do…

    24. Mike in Missouri says:

To "Randy in SA, TX" (San Antonio):

Eight (8) years ago, there was NEVER any question as to whether or not C-SPAN would have access to high-profile debates and negotiations in the U.S. Congress. It is only in 2010, under a highly partisan and corrupt Democratic Congress (and White House) that this has become an issue.

The government works for us, consequently they have a moral AND legal obligation to allow those who pay their salaries some sort of access to all hearings, meetings, and other formal gatherings of law-making that directly impact a majority of the U.S. population.

When public openness is violated, it leads to only one conclusion: "There's something fishy going on here!"

    25. Jeanne Stotler, wood says:

All members seem to be ignoring the public, I have emailed, faxed and written to Sens. Warner and Webb, and Rep. connolly, I got no response from Sen. Warner, Sen Webb assured me he would vote against a bill that hurt Sr. Cit., well he VOTED FOR IT, Rep. connolly replied saying he agreed with all the points I disagreed with, this is what we have in Congress, Peoeple who think they know more than we do what we need and want. Vote is our weapon, VOTE 2010 and 2012, CLEAN HOUSE.

    26. philip says:

MR. PRESDENT OBAMA WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO HIDE FROM. EVAN C SPAN WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY YOU WON'T OPEN UP HEALTH CARE TO A PUPLIC DEBATE OF TRANSPARENCY. WICH IS ONE OF YOU PROMIES WE KNOW THAT YOUR WORD HAS LITTLE VALUE

    27. Lynn B. DeSpain says:

I use the words of Harry S. Truman when addressing C-Span, and all others who gave trust to Obama and all the others with empty promises in both Federal Houses,"How many times must a man hit you in the head with a shovel, before you figure out he ain't your friend?"

If the health care plan is so wonderful, then why is it being written under the cover of darkness and secrecy? We all know that it is going to do what Obama promised "TO fundamentally change America." This is not the change we expected, and will place one sixth of the economy into Government hands, along with banks, and automobile companies. The Government, when in charge, has not done well with Amtrak, the post office, Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae or the social security program. The funds from Social security were dipped into, time and time again as a slush fund instead of being allowed to grow as was intended. Why should we expect them to handle our health care any differently? They refuse to tell us the facts, and that can only mean it is an unacceptable liability that they intend to shove down our throats. I'm so angry at the duplicity of our so called leaders and will do all I can to oust them in the next election. If this is change, then someone pulled the wool over our collective eyes!

      Lloyd Scallon said it best.

So we need to pray hard for this country to turn around because what is happening now is very scarey.

They will also keep the legilation in the bill that says no future congress can change what they enact. What next? Will they have a bill that says they will be permanent and we don't need any more elections?

    33. dave, dayton says:

Yea, your getting change all right, change to a socialist form of government if this health care reform becomes law. What happened to "transparency" Mr. Prez ??? If the American people could see what goes on behind those closed doors they would impeach half of Congress and OB as well. The arrogance of Congress and the executive branch is astounding, yea, "change you can believe in", change to a socialist form of government, that's your "change". When they start taking 60% of your income for taxes to support their version of "change", maybe the American people will wake up.

    34. Drew Page, IL says:

I love it, the rattlesnakes in Washington are starting to bite one another. Pelosi's laughingly made comment, "many promises were made during the campaign", was a bit of a jab at B.O.

I can't get enough of the replays of Mr. Obama's speeches where he promised 'transparency' in his administration. Where he promised that the debate on health care reform would be televised on C-SPAN with all parties (doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, representatives of pharmaceutical companies and of Congress) in attendance at a big round table, so the American people would see who was really reprresenting their interests.

Well don't worry Mr. President, you got the transparency you wanted; everyone can see right through you. The C-SPAN promise you made is kind of like getting stuck in the butt with your own spear, wouldn't you say?

    35. John B. San Diego says:

Speaker Pelosi, your actions do confirm the American People’s worst fears Congress does operate behind closed doors.

Observe the public sentiment about transparency Speaker Pelosi you have no need to sequester your members of "The House of Representatives;" it serves a purpose that "You Madam Speaker" do not care for ultimately and all involved will politically pay huge consequences for that action…We Promise!

    36. greg, homestead, fl says:

The (behind closed doors) health care bill is illegal and unconstitutional. No government can mandate that we buy anything, nor can they fine and imprison or tax you on a health care reform bill that we did not vote on. Ever hear of taxation without representation? Who has and can prove that they read 2,074 pages of the bill, and can speak on the issues in it? NO ONE Has. Another Joke? Putting in the bill that no future congress can change what they enact !!!!
