  • Morning Bell: The Copenhagen Climate Comedy

Imagine an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting where all the members showed up drunk and with extra cases of wine, beer, and booze to keep them happy. Now imagine that that same group of drunks was empowered to make trillions of dollars worth of economic decisions for everybody in the world. This absurd scenario swiftly summarizes the United Nations Climate Change Conference beginning today, and lasting through December 18, in Copenhagen.

Despite the fact that the entire conference is founded on the belief that human economic activity, especially flying and driving, is emitting levels of greenhouse gasses that will soon kill us all, plutocrats from around the world have marshaled over 1,200 limos and 140 private planes to travel to and around Copenhagen over the next two weeks. When they are not participating in the world’s oldest profession, conferees will be negotiating over a successor treaty to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol which obligated most developed nations to reduce their greenhouse emissions by 5 percent below 1990 baseline levels by 2012.

So how did those Kyoto emissions reduction pledges turnout? According to U.N. data, between 2000 and 2006, the 27 European signatories actually increased their emissions by 0.1%. Canada even saw a 21.3% emissions rise. Meanwhile, the U.S., who was not bound by the treaty since the U.S. Senate voted 95-0 not to subject our economy to costly regulations that China and India were specifically exempted from, actually reduced our emissions by 3% over the same time period.

One key reason Europe failed to meet their Kyoto obligations was the tremendous cost of reducing emissions, estimated at $67.75 billion to $170.84 billion through 2008. Because of the high costs of reducing emissions, Copenhagen is seen, especially by Europeans, as an opportunity to force the U.S. to join the other developed countries required to reduce emissions. The economic stakes are huge. Nick Main, global managing partner for climate change and sustainability at the consulting firm Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, tells the Los Angeles Times: “One of the reasons that this negotiation is difficult is it really does involve issues of competitive and comparative advantage between countries. This is really an economic debate of, ‘How do you pay the costs?’”

And the costs to our economy would be huge. A Heritage Foundation analysis of Waxman-Markey found that this energy tax would have serious implications throughout the economy. For a household of four, energy costs (electric, natural gas, gasoline expenses) would rise by $436 in 2012 and by $1,241 by 2035, averaging $829 over that period. Higher energy costs would increase the cost of many other products and services. Overall, Waxman-Markey would reduce gross domestic product by $393 billion annually and by a total of $9.4 trillion by 2035.

The Obama administration is sadly mistaken if it believes they can unilaterally submit the American people to such an economic disaster. Even Senators within the President’s own party have expressed grave concerns with the administration’s Copenhagen promises. Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) recently wrote the President: “Although details have not been made available, recent statements by Special Envoy on Climate Change Todd Stern indicate that negotiators may be intending to commit the United States to a nationwide emission reduction program. As you well know from your time in the Senate, only specific legislation agreed upon in the Congress, or a treaty ratified by the Senate, could actually create such a commitment on behalf of our country.”

With unemployment still in the double digits, now is not the time to subjecting the U.S. economy to costly new rules, especially rules that are not equally applied to developing countries like India and China.

If they legalize tax funded abortion – all conservatives should fight in the courts as conscientious objectors to stop paying taxes. This is truly a separation of church and state issue.

Isn't it amazing to think that humans could make such a profound change to earth in the past 100 years when the planet has been around millions of years and has endured all kinds of non-human events. Nothing worse than a righteous "scientist" armed with a little information followed by a group of money thirsty government officials.

    3. Merrill Inglis says:

With all the protest we read and hear, How is congress and the President getting by with all this killing of our country and everything we believe and fouhgt for.I find it hard to believe that every member of the Dmo's are for this. it is time for term limits on congress.

      Keep up the good fight

No body cares about anything except controlling the great unwashed uneducated ignorant masses which is exactly what we are, for allowing these people to do this to us unopposed.

    6. Lloyd Scallan - New says:

How many times and in what langue must this be said before people reconize and understand the Copenhagen conference and Obama is not about "Climate Change"? It's about POWER! The power of government "spreading the wealth" and thus control the lives of every person, worldwide. This is about Obama giving our tax dollars to less fortunate countries (because many of which are under the control of socialist) and his ideology create to a worldwide, socialist government.

    7. Bob Veigel, Arlingto says:

The entire Obama group is a comedy. The sad part is, we are the butt of his dangerous jokes.

    8. 1st Lt. Richard Ptal says:

RE: Your "Comedy" headline: Nothing this abomination ( excuse me; O-bamination)does anymore is funny! The guy reminds me of tiger woods. Up there with a big smile on his face, and all the while, he is an unmitigated disaster. Like I said before, next November can't come soon enough!!! I hope Reid, Pelosi, and the rest of this gang of crooks get new jobs cleaning out sewers. It'll be just as smelly as what they're wading in now. (maybe even less).

    9. Judith in Michigan says:

Statements from a column by AP writer, Arthur Max, on 12-06-09.

"UN says climate finale may have happy ending"

"…Obama said he would commit to an emissions cut of 17 percent from 2005, even though those cuts have not yet been approved by Congress."

"U.S. can show flexibility, even if it cannot raise its emissions offer, said Jonathan Pershing, the senior U.S. delegate at the talks. He said the Obama administration was showing its seriousness through budget allocations and regulatory actions on big polluters."

A line in another part of the article states,

"Finance–billions of dollars immediately and hundreds of billions of dollars annually within a decade…"

Budget allocations??? Billions, hundreds of billions of dollars???

      From whom and to whom???

Even though recently released e-mails indicate the propaganda about "global warming" is corrupt information and a hoax?

It appears that the O. administration sees this as a done deal and the US citizens have no say in the matter. Congressional oversight? Nah, not necessary.

I just heard EPA announced CO2 is a dangerous pollutant. This is what every being on earth exhales. Get ready for Act 2 in Copenhagen

We are about to lose our soverignty, our wealth, and our way of life. You think that is too radical a statement? Then you are not paying attention.

    10. Lee-White Tanks AZ says:

I'm disappointed, even the very capable people of Heritage cannot bring themselves to state the obvious, Climate Change is a monumental SCAM, has been and always will be.

It just seems that the very people who form very large and very skeptical group regarding this AGW fiasco tend to treat it as though somewhere in the AGW mantra their must be a smidgen of truth. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This is largely the work of one man, the former Vice President of the United States Albert Gore. When attending Harvard Gore took a course in Climate Science. It was taught by one Roger Revelle. Mr Revelle and a few colleges were proponents of a theory that CO2 gas had some mysterious/metaphysical capability to affect the atmosphere far in excess of any expected or scientifically explainable manner. Specifically it would cause the atmosphere to retain heat beyond normal conditions and this would be attributable to some yet to be demonstrated "catalytic" capability.

These words and theory fell on fertile ground. Mr Gore went on to create an almost religious following through his books. He then was able to "cash in" in a big way after leaving office as VPOTUS. His movie and his inordinate influence was used to create an almost hysterical group of followers.

But the real tragedy has been his "Climate Change" Carbon Credit scheme and its' criminalizing affect on key segments of the Political, Media, Academic, and Scientific communities. This 'CO2 is a bad guy' system was a golden opportunity for governments and certain individuals to tax and SCAM whole nations and getting disgustingly rich in the process.

So what if they had to make the 'data fit a desired outcome'. So what if they had to 'brainwash' a generation of children to 'sell' the hoax. So what if they basically had to lie, cheat and steal. And,so what if 'We The People' figured out that this was a scam and now a leak or a Hacker has exposed the cesspool that is a segment of our scientific community who are nothing more than criminals.

These charlatans, including the President of the United States are going to march forward shoving this Criminal Enterprise down the throats of people though out the world. The saddest part of all of this is that the developed countries will survive this fiasco but the third world will disproportionately bear the brunt of the ridiculous CO2 restrictions. They will be unable to develop their economies in an open and free enterprise environment.

We need to get far more aggressive in our words and deeds to stop this 'evil'farce in its' tracks. One way is to forget all the Political Correct 'tap dancing' and call this thing what it is, a Criminal Enterprise and a Monumental Hoax. One that is designed only to vastly enrich a select few and to further the agenda of the New World Order.

    15. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

There is a difference between the Climate and the Environment. Man can control the Environment; he cannot control the Climate. We are over-controlled re. the Environment, but vast improvements have nevertheless been achieved.

Socialists in our Government and foreign countries are using Climate change in an attempt to destroy Capitalism. Also, the phony science reports that have been used, have been proven to be fabricated and debunked. Yet the die hard Leftists in our Government are still trying to foist this junk science on us.

They must not be allowed to succeed.

The President needs to shun the meeting in Copenhagen and start being an American and not a Marxist Globalist.

I am convinced, however, that he wants to destroy our American institutions and install a dictator-driven Socialist Government ala Venezuela and Chaves.

He and all the Socialists (regardless of what they call themselves) HAVE to be voted out of office and sent packing before they have their way! It is America's only hope

    16. Jonathan Seid, Willi says:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

I swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States of America.

Europeans, bless them all Tiny Tim, see the USA as an outlying colony that owes them because 500-+ years ago, a few of them stumbled upon these two continents and Europeanized them.

Such as it is with Socialists/Progressives, when we ask how much more do you want us to give, the answer is always: "More! More! More!"

It's past time to cut them off. Re: the Framers.

    17. Roger S., Ma. says:

You can argue all day and all night about the human effect on Global climate: Is it cooling? Warming? Simply changing? That’s not the only issue. Another issue is what to do about it: Be passive? Active? Reactive? Pro-active? — Apparently none of the models currently out there, and none of the data, are in any way conclusive.

But the real issue is this:

The fudged “science” was only a foil. It can now be safely ignored or discarded, because those crooked CRU minions have accomplished what was needed: to cast doubt upon common sense and generate a “benefit of the doubt” concerning the truth, so it may be spun either way. That’s all any of our "sticky pols" ever needed or wanted!

To my mind, that isn’t insanity (unless truth mattered, which it seldom does to those looking for unearned profit and undeserved power), but extreme greed and extreme deviousness.

The voters will have to start drumming these crooked political hacks out of office ASAP. Copenhagen is as “pretty” as Kyoto and at least as lovely as where they’ll meet next: too nice for any of them on our dollar!

    18. Wallyblu, Zion, IL says:

All these so called experts on global warming never mention the most powerful green house gas in the atmosphere, water vapor.

They call CO2 pollution when it isn't it is a necessary component of life the same as oxygen.

When all these alarmist can prove the ideal percentage of CO2 and the ideal temperature for the climate then they can start to work on the ways to achieve them.

    19. Prevailer76AZ says:

The EPA has just announced we must eliminate greenhouse gasses – including carbon dioxide. In the respiration process, the air we breathe out is carbon dioxide!! Are we supposed to stop breathing?

I suggest the mandate begin with a few choice people on the hill.

    20. Mike Sheahen, Hickor says:

As the facts, including real science and the actual results of the actions of the so-called "Progressive" government elitist and statist Left, including Obama, will all again show and prove, this time around from the White House, Congress, and elsewhere, including in Copenhagen, their now both scientifically and widely exposed misleading power and money-grabbing so-called "anthropomorphic (man-caused) global warming/climate change" fraud, upon which their conference in Copenhagen is built, has nothing to do with "saving the environment", or even "protecting the environment", and everything to do with yet another of their hypocritical power and money-grabbing schemes which are already repeatedly shown and proven so costly and destructive of people’s freedoms, economies, health, and lives around the world, and even the environment.

    21. tina frost says:

Here's my take on reducing CO2. Our answer to the world should be: All the other countries of the world (Who want the U.S. to commit to some Kyoto type treaty)(AND I MEAN ALL!) must first equal or exceed the efforts of the United States before our President sits down to discuss anything. End of discussion.

with the hoax proven for what it is, Al Gore and his fellow criminals, including the potus and his administration, pretend nothing has changed. They carry on like the hoax is real and demonize the realists among us who dare to call attention to the junk science as it has been exposed. Time for congress to rein in the administration and the various agencies enacting policy via regulation. I don't think anyone in D.C. realizes the mood of the majority of the American people is rapidly turning against the whole bunch. Maybe that is what the potus and his band of czars is counting on, an uprising of some kind so they impose martial law and truly take control. Since this administration took over I have been thinking of the escalation of his policies as a test of how much the citizens of the nation will put up with before they rise up. Sorta like a kid testing his limits. Just a thought.

    34. Bill Cheyenne Wyomin says:

When 9 out of every 10 scientists say Global Warming is a real threat, why do most conservatives not take this serious. What are the scientists motives to lying to the entire world? What would they acheive by lying. The answer is nothing, therefore why not take this seriously. Wouldnt you rather have future generations be safe, they sorry? To think this way below is naive. We have made profound changes in the last 100 years.

"Isn’t it amazing to think that humans could make such a profound change to earth in the past 100 years when the planet has been around millions of years and has endured all kinds of non-human events. If our governments cannot convince our Chinese friends to sign I bet we can (!!!!!!!!!!!!)… with a good old fashioned boycott on chinese products. How long b4 they cut & run after a few NGO's call the western consumer to a boycott?

    37. Elle, Ct. says:

Our government is corrupt –Congress is made up of prostitutes and thieves – Senators take money to give their "yes" vote on a Bill that has been designed to destroy private enterprise, cripple the job market, take away our freedoms, steal more and more of our tax dollars to pay for corrupt politicians "Pet projects" and ultimately destroy America. This has to be stopped — if we ever needed a revolution, we need one now. The power hungry , arrogant Obama will stop at nothing to get his way and we must let him and Congress that we will not stand for what is going on any more. Gathering the largest group of protesters ever to gather outside the White House they may get the picture. We can revolt verbally and get the message across but we must do it now, not later when our phone lines, computers and mail will be monitored by Obama's "speech police". Another plan to get the governments attention is something I would like to work. Everyone holding a job should ask payroll NOT to withhold taxes – tell them that we as individuals will pay taxes on our own ( self employed people have to pay their own taxes and do the figuring out and regular workers should be able to do the same. If we all did this , across the country and filed our taxes when we remembered them, I think the government would notice a lack of funds for them to play wit – payback would be nice. There was a reason that Obama wanted the bill signed now — he figured that with the Christmas season upon us we will not cause a ruckus in Washington — we need to prove to him that he knows nothing about American citizens.
