You did not pass if not qualified. Then, in the mid-late 70s (Jimmy Carter and the Department of Education ring a bell)? We started re-inventing ourselves. It might hurt a child's feelings if they were held back. It may permanently alter their self-esteem. There are no losers; everybody wins. And, other nonsense that certainly does not prepare anyone for the REAL world. You get the message. Now, people are realizing that if a child is not qualified to advance they MIGHT have problems at the next level. Good grief. This is just another example of common sense and LOGIC thrown right out the window (along with countless billions of taxpayer dollars). Look around at the breakdown of communities, the brutal violence, neighbors not talking with each other, people afraid to turn gang members or someone in who just may be... Back when I went to school, you passed or your stood back. There was no "hand-holding, kissy-kissy" treatment, you learned or you sat in disgrace as you watched your friends move ahead. Somewhere along the line, this was taken to be "too much for Little Johnny to endure". So now you find that Little Johnny grew up to be a dummy and it hits you like a ton of bricks that you were wrong all these years! Nice of the "system" to finally wake up! This is new?
