  • Morning Bell: 10% Unemployment Shows Objective Failure of Obama Stimulus

Last week the Obama administration issued a report purporting to show that the President’s $787 billion economic stimulus plan had saved or created exactly 640,329 jobs. Such a precise number for such a fuzzy concept as jobs “saved or created” immediately raised doubts about the veracity of the report in any honest American’s mind.

And since that report was issued, a once compliant press has filed story after story tearing the credibility of the Obama administration’s job creation claims to shreds. Just enter the words “stimulus”, “jobs”, and “report” in a Google News search and these are just some of the headlines you will receive:

Luckily the American people do not need to count on phony new jobs studies to provide the objective data necessary to hold President Barack Obama accountable for his economic policies. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics has been collecting accepted and standardized data employment data since the 1940s. When President Obama was selling his $787 billion stimulus to the American people he promised unemployment would never rise above 7.8% and that by 2010 the U.S. economy would employ 138.6 million jobs.

Today, BLS released its monthly jobs report and the numbers speak for themselves. The economy shed another 190,000 jobs in October, bringing the number of jobs lost since Obama was sworn in to 3.8 million. Worse still, the unemployment rate rose from 9.8% to 10.2% percent. With only 130.8 million jobs in the U.S. economy, President Obama is now 7.8 million jobs short of what he promised the American people. That makes President Obama’s stimulus an objective failure.

The Obama stimulus failed because it was based on faulty Keynesian beliefs. Heritage fellow J.D. Foster explains:

The Keynesian stimulus theory fails for the simple reason that it is only half a theory. It correctly describes how deficit spending can raise the level of demand in part of the economy, and ignores how government borrowing to finance deficit spending automatically reduces demand elsewhere.

Fortunately, the economy’s natural recuperative powers may be ending the recession. Last week the Commerce Department reported that the economy grew at 3.5%. But if this recovery is going to include job growth along with GDP growth, then job killing initiatives like Obamacare and cap and trade will have to be abandoned.

There are some who believe everything out of the mouths of Obama, Pelosi and Reid. I recently made a remark about shady math and the other person corrected?? me saying "Oh no, there were jobs created and He(Obama) is doing great, just wait and see" I told them they will wake up, hope it's not to late to save the rest of Americans. The mentality of some is to follow without questioning,I question first, I have since I first heard of this man and listened to his repeated lies.

    2. Dean-Texas/Alaska says:

Oh, what a shock! You mean Communism doesn't create a sound economy? Obama, Ayers, Soros, Karl Marx, et al, will be SO dissapointed.

10% Unemployment Shows Objective Failure of Obama Stimulus

I DISAGREE – Obama's brain trust "Objective" is working as planned, patterned after Karl Marx and the communist party, use the mass of disgruntled people who will vote for your party. THAT is their "Objective", KEEP THEM UNEMPLOYED and the more unemployed getting doles from the great benefactor government the better. WAKE UP! Why do you think people vote for the Democrat-Socialist Party?

    6. Tater Salad says:

This healthcare bill put forward by the Democrats will only make this country go deeper into recession. I do not trust the Obama administration anymore because of this. Government run healthcare will bring this country into a Socialist state and I am believing that this is Obama's main goal anyhow. If the Democrats continue to ram this down our throats then they all will be unemployed in their next elections which could be well after 2010. When it is their turn for re-election, they will be targeted. Why not, they are targeting us seniors now by taking $500 Billion out of Medicare to pay for this government run option plan.

    7. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

Obama all 'Progressives', fail to understand how 'regressive and repressive' is their entire philosophy. Or do they?

Their vision of a "Brave new World" is a world of collective citizenry controlled by 'rulers' who believe they know what is best for them.

How does this differ from the ancient empires? How does it differ from failed Communism wherever it has or does exist?

Our Founding Fathers saw the EVIL in an all powerful political ruling class and constructed a government "OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE".

Obama does not care for The Constitution because it denies his Marxist beliefs.

There are Americans who support him. Why? Ignorance? Hatred for America? Worship of a demigod? Just plain stupidity?

It defies logic and boggles the mind!

    8. Ed, ohio says:

      you are right.

Absolute failure, but in Obama's mind he never expected to help businesses create new jobs. He only planned to reward his voting block conctituents that helped him get elected — e.g., 15 million union members from SEIU, AFL-CIO, UCFW, NEA, AFT, etc.; and community organizers from ACORN's 300 affiliates, millions of government employees, and millions of non-working citizens subsidized with entitlement programs paid for by working taxpayers.

Show me the stimulus funds designated to create new demand for business growth. Only businesses that might soon benefit are those supporting Healthcare reform, Cap and Tax, or Green renewable energy — like GE, Duke energy, Siemens, etc.

    9. Gary, Colorado Sprin says:

What Heritage fails to recognize is the value of spending $787,000,000,000.00 to create exactly 640,329 jobs. I think it's wonderful. That means the current Administration spent $1,229,055.69 tax dollars per job created. Since the jobs created are most likely near-minimum wage jobs, then it must be worth it, right? Right? I guess i should shut up and get back to work, someone needs to spend my money.

    10. harley, Austin, Texa says:

Now, go back and see what unemployment was 25-26 years ago when Ronald Reagan had been in office for three years. Ponder how his policies had or hadn't worked; unemployment, modern era annual budget deficit records, national debt growth at record levels, misery index at record levels…I could go on! Reagan had been in office for three years and was a failure. Obama has been in office for little over 10 months. Let's not get too excited and/or hopeful about an Obama failure!! I know Obama failure is the hope and dream of all right wing ideologues! We'll see!! It is too early for intelligent people to condemn current policy based on history! But then, who said anyone in this blogosphere is intelligent or has any historic perspective?

    12. Jonathan Seid, Willi says:

As Groucho Marx replied, "Are you going to believe me or your own eyes?"

Defending this administration's record over the past year is to defend failure.

Puffing up numbers and smiling while obfuscating, doesn't work on the American people any more, if it ever did.

The Obama administration is too little competency and too little common sense, a replay of the Carter administration, at best.

Americans want their president to succeed, want their congress to be productive. The shame is the men and women who promised to do their best are not living up to their promises, blaming others for the broken promises.

    13. Joan Sarasota FL. says:

The only thing Obama does well is hand candy out to children and power out to his communist friends.

    15. Bernard Mulvaney, Fo says:

Everyone knows AARP is an insurance company which will profit from the health bill–they got it tailored to their desires. What most people are unaware of is the percentage of MDs who belong to the AMA and the age average of those MDs. I think you will find about 38% are members and they have an unusual bias toward the young and just licensed.

    16. Bob Veigel, Arlingto says:

Disagree. It shows that his program is working. He wants to destroy the free enterprise America so Americans will demand more government hand outs and more government control. He and his administration are evil and very destructive. Wake up America.

    17. John, Colorado says:

    20. Freedom of Speech TX says:

      Dear Haley of Austin TX,

It is well-known that Austin is the Berkley of Texas so your comments do not surprise me.

You are the one with no historical perspective.

Every since Reagan, record federal revenues have been streaming in to Porky Pig. The fact that government continues to spend and never save for a "rainy day" has put us into this situation.

I'll give you some perspective. ACORN and left wing "community organizing groups have been consolidating their power for 30 years. Their goal is socialism or worse. Don't take MY word for it, read what they have SAID. Read what George Soros has said; how many times has he been to the White House? We ARE a REPUBLIC, thus, anyone who wants to "re-invent America is – what?.

Both parties have spent too much. If Newt and the Republicans did not force Clinton to move to the center there would have been no "surplus" at the end of his 8 years. And, they still spent alot of money. If FM/FM and govt had not pushed sub-prime loans for people who could not afford them (beginning in the 1990s) we would not have had bundled mortgage securities that was the primary cause of our near collapse last year.

There is plenty of blame to go around because NO ONE challeneged ACORN's notorious voting registration violations; instead money was funneled to them. The ongoing investigations should be really interesting if we ever get to the bottom of this mess. NO ONE challenged the sub prime loans. There is a political reason and connection here. I think you know what that is.

The comment about Reagan is ludicrous. You and your far left buddies in Austin keep hanging onto a sinking ship. You voted for a person with NO executive experience. You voted for a person who stated "Judge me by who I surround myself with".

It is clear WHO he has surrounded himself with – left wing ideologues.

The stars aligned just right last Nov. Millions of people voted on pure emotion, ignoring Obama's past comments such as …the so called founding fathers or …the civil rights movement and courts did not go far enough on wealth distribution. People were blinded and did not address what they were really going to get.

      They were naive.

    21. Roger S., Ma. says:

From your "Quick Hits": I took the trouble to check out the story about Queen Nancy reneging on her "72-hour pledge."

First, that's no real surprise and was to be expected.

Next, it turns out that supposedly she had merely pledged to "air" the "manager's version" for 72 hours, not the whole thing. No real surprise there, either!

To be honest, that's not only "in character" for her, but may even be appropriate considering the final version is now over 1,900 pages long. It would have meant reading -and- comprehending at the rate of roughly 2 minutes per page of complicated legalese for each and every minute of the ensuing 3 days; no sleep, no breaks of any kind!

Are all of our members of Congress superhuman, speed-reading, geniuses? Their past performance would inform against that notion! So, Executive Summary is all the reading any one of them is likely to have accomplished before a vote.

Which leads me to this question: What sort of executive in private industry contrives to be informed in only broad generalities of his company's plans?

You will have guessed the answer: Only the sort who is destined to fail on the day he will have acted once too often along the lines of: "Lordy, Lord, spare me the details!"

In 1,900 pages there must be surely enough details to fail a hundred times over by the "law of unintended consequences? After all, that would only amount to one unintended consequence on average every 19 pages, a plausible figure?!

Considering the foregoing, nobody need be surprised — and presumably only professional kool-aid drinkers would be — that the stimulus cost 1.25+ million per saved job. Believe that figure! No excuses, because it's well in line with the 24,000 dollars each crashed clunker has actually cost the taxpayer.

Bottom line: The "law of unintended consequences" needs to be expanded to include the future loss of office for each and every one of these "geniuses" who dare(s/d) to vote "Ay" on this or similar bill(s). Let's surprise them, 2010, 2012, 2014, and beyond! Every election a "tea-party", until they learn!

    22. Ben C, Ann Arbor says:

What tends to be lost in the discussions is that economic and social change take a long time to realize their consequences. The mortage industry fiasco started with Carter and his notion that ALL citizens should be able to own their own homes whether or not they had the means to pay for it. Look at the mess he started. I worry that the short term benefits of the "Stimulus" package will cripple our economy in the future – as will "Cap and Trade" and "Obamacare." Social agendas, such as the one from the Frankurt Scool after WWII, are just now being realized. For the Kens in Las Vegas – this is my objection to what is happening now. The GOP certainly has contributed to the problem and I for one am looking to vote for people who detest the direction our country is heading. My guess is that the Kens want a free ride for as long as they can get it and the future be damned.

All the flag waving and silly tea parties in the world cannot stop us from creating the new future for the proletarient slaves of China. So whine all you want. You are powerless.

    26. Dean-Texas/Alaska says:

    28. Wildcat from Dallast says:

It is intuitively obvious, even to the most casual observer, that President Obama’s stimulus (PORKULUS) plan had nothing to do with supporting capitalism and the American economy.

The “Pirates on the Potomac” have become even more blasé with their mundane approach to saying what almost sounds right while simultaneously doing everything possible to undermine the American economy and support Obama’s (somewhat) hidden agenda.

Keep this in mind. Long before Obama even ran for the highest office in the land he articulated a significantly skewed concept of such crucial American historical events that are the foundation of the greatest free nation in the world. He is either ignorant of or totally misunderstands the numerous writings on “broadsides”, letters (from our country’s founding fathers to friends, family and each other) and pamphlets (such as “Common Sense” by Thomas Paine) leading up to the American Revolution including The Declaration of Independence. During an interview by an Illinois based NPR program he spoke about the “negative liberties” of the US Constitution and that even the civil rights legislation and court decisions did not go far enough since it did not go into the redistribution of wealth.

Would the Pirates on the Potomac care to show us in our nation’s Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution (including the Bill of Rights) and all remaining amendments where our founding fathers included this redistribution of wealth concept? They can’t find it because it is not there!

Based upon a review of Obama’s extremists views relative to our nation’s founding and our founding documents it is not too difficult to ascertain what his hidden agenda is.

When you are willing to actually shed light on Obama’s past you quickly understand the false foundations he holds onto and then ascertain that he plans the absolute and catastrophic destruction of America-the first part of his hideous hidden agenda.

Why else would he recklessly spend the country into debt to foreign governments (like China) essentially making the United States of America slave to China [since they are the primary lender] and we are the borrower?

Obama’s hidden agenda entails the control of power (his), the enlarging of the democratic party by giving away our nation’s wealth including to illegal aliens and then making them legal and ultimately to set himself up for a position in the eventual global (or one world) government.

Also, doesn't the 10.2 percent include the lengthening of the unemployment benefits? Thus the number would have to jump up. And what is the number of the actual unemployed, including those who gave up? And do these numbers include ANY illegals?

    35. Ron Derry NH says:

How is it that when the few times the Republicans have the power of Congress behind them the Democrats get credit for balancing the budget, lowering government costs, and creating a sound economy when the Republicans forced the legislation that made it real; and when the Democrats have the power of Congress behind them it is the Republicans fault that the Democrats are terribly inept at budget control, real economic value and security and can't seem to understand the simplest of economic principles?

Will the morons in this country ever come to realize that feel good, guilt rapped promises prescribed by millionaire lawyers designed to over throw self gained worth are products of leftist destroyers of personal value and not the fault of Republicans.

What temporary gains are born of the deceptive practices of government stealing from one group to pay another is so riddled with government corruption and coercion that the shear weight of it is suffocating our nation.

At the foundation of it all is the government seeking to monetize off of the devaluation of its citizenship to gain political favor for the next election cycle.

It seems only liberals can see this and find joy in its perfect impurity and would rather blame their most loyal defenders of their worth by hanging the failure of their party upon the shoulders of business men and fellow American citizens in the unholy alliance of supporting the raping of one mans worth with governmental favoritism over another, and cursing the Republicans for not stopping them.

I wouldn't associate myself with any man that would destroy another mans worth nor blame another man for the faults of some one else as if it were trivial and a thing to play with in a game of hot potato to see who is the inadvertent holder of the sin.

The Democrats thought that spreading the failure of their policies around to the entire monetary system was worth risking Americas worth for; they should be held responsible for that deception upon the people of America and not protected as if there wasn't another way out. That Republicans in the minority should somehow carry the blame is ludicrous.

The Dems took credit for balancing a budget during Clinton that took the Republican congress vetoing his budget many times to become real.

Where are the heroes in the Democrat congress now that should be protecting American earned income/value.

ZERO! As in all things you are what you do. The dems have proved to be failures at governmental management and insuring its people worth. They have alone cost us our national honor, pride and dignity and are now bent on enslaving us to their debt to CHINA.

Again only a liberal would see this as positive and then throw the blame to some one else.

RESPONSIBILITY is a foreign phrase to liberals and this is the proof.

240,000 more lost their jobs this month……..what is the party in power doing about this….blaming Bush still?

      L O S E R S ! ! ! Totally un American losers!

Reduce all federal agencies including military (one year only for them) 1st year 3%, 2nd year 5%,3rd year 5%. This can be done. As we all know that when they go on this modest diet we would all gain. The unemployment rate is a product of figure manipulation which doesn't reflect the greater proportion of the real figure. Obama – as many have said, as was every president since (but not restricted to) JF Kennedy – is an impressive face on a more sinister group of corporate powers which really control the reigns of power. He is merely a well-spoken puppet keeping the machine going which would have kept running whether he was elected or not. If we knew full-well what was in the making today, there'd be a revolution tomorrow. Leglislations and bills being passed at unprecented rates recently are not for our benefit, not one little bit.

Why is everyone acting sooo surprised at Obama's policies and agendas? Obama has NEVER told the truth about anything and he has NEVER had a successful program since he took office, not one! His claim to fame was the "Cash for Clunkers" which hurt automobile dealers sales in the long run and cost the American Taxpayer over $21,000 per unit sold. Where is the GOOD in that? Obama is a novice in training at the taxpayer's expense. He will never have the courage to make the hard decisions required of a superpower like the U. S. and if he is allowed to stay in office he will be the DOOM of our country and our economic system. However, I am hopeful that the American Voters have had an awakening to just how corrupt and devious his associates are and realize that Obama must be removed from office at the next election along with the corrupt elected politicians now occupying Capitol Hill. A big step was obvious at the recent election polls and I believe those who continue to support Obama and his Administration's policies and agendas will soon begin to jump ship or distance themselves from him or face political suicide. The public is watching to see who votes for Obama's policies and agendas and will find it absolutely necessary to vote against those policies and agendas to stay alive in the political arena. They can not continue to ignore the voters of their respective districts without retaliation from their constituents which will be reflected by the voting polls next year. Obama can not gurantee sitting Congressmen and Senators their jobs will be secure at that time and considering the anger expressed toward this administration they will be gone soon if they don't abandon their present stance on the issues.

record of employment and unemployment between 1982 and 1986 and discusses a variety of cyclical and structural employment policies that were considered but not implemented during the years 1982-84 when I served as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. Employment rose by 11 million jobs during the cyclical recovery of those four years, lowering the unemployment rate from 10.8 percent to 6.6 percent

to the guy who ask what the GOP does to fix things-nothing the are not in office. Their path would don't be to quadruple debt, and at the same time propse massive systematic overhauls that have a high rate of problems and cost more than.

To the people who said give Obama more time-these people don;t understand damage has been done and will escalate-stability is not stable under Obamas policies. Anyone who hides there heads in the sand-is not someone who has a "mind" and pays attention to reality. Instead your time would be better spent investigating causal theories aside from rhetoric an cult of personality surounding Obama.

    55. ben halet ny says:

The Reagan deficits, which used to be held up as an example of the former president's mismanagement of the economy, were, at their worst point, only about a tenth of what Obama has given us in his first year—no, his first days—in office. Today Reagan's $221,245,000 billion budget deficit for FY 1986 ( U.S. Office of Management and Budget, Historical Tables, annual), once the worst year on record, looks like the good old days. And that deficit occurred during a period of economic expansion, unlike the Obama deficit, which is being incurred during a serious recession.

"You avoided real answers in favor of blabbing the Repug party line."

this is the same stuff dems will accuse anyone who has something significant to say with science to back it up-that cross examines their beliefs. That is really "liberal" of you.

    56. J. White, retired [c says:

Yo, Folks!!! What did you expect from a narcissistic arrogant pathological liar full of himself ????

There is little difference between this latest democrat fool to occupy OUR White House and the Dirt-digging Double-dealing Duo– the Clintons. Full of themselves, selfishly pursuing lies to pursue their perceived "power"…over YOU! Because, in their feeble intellects, they perceive themselves superior to the rest of us; and "blessed" with godly erudition able to run [ruin] our collectives lives when they cannot even run their own.

The little difference is: the latest occupant is an outright marxist and surrounds himself with birds of that feather.

It IS WE who have to wrest this nation back from what they intend. Democrats all– need to be defeated and never ever voted into office again. BUT, wait—-who voted for them??

People who think that somehow, the world, and those of us who work hard for our nation and our families "owe" them a living. People who have been made into the American version of the Indian sacred cattle. People who have had every opportunity to do for themselves, but white liberals ever on the prowl for more votes to stay in power have made them the wealthiest professional poor in the entire world.

They think that the unemployemnt will not affect them. But, when Burger King shuts its doors- then what? When the hotel lays them off from their jobs, what then? Well, more "unemployment" money from the Obama…without having to get up to go to work.

The level of unemployment is far above what the inane press such as AP are trying to lie about- It is above 20% simply because their "statistics" do not take into account those wh have given up looking for work or do part-time work and are no longer on the unemplyment rolls/…

Time for this lates version of the ineptness of liberals to be thrown out of ofice…yet another Carter….is what he is doing with blatant disregard for the Constitution grounds to impeach him?

Simply pathetic; I'd expect to see this happening some place like in Russia, Cuba, South America or China, but, not in America. These democrats, especially the hold outs that caved, should be considered as tratiors to the Constitution. It really is sad that the traditional media is giving all of this a pass and not reporting the truth about what is going on, they, the main stream media, have really done a great disservice the American people.

    65. Charles LaBounty, Me says:

Our Republic has failed. The great experiment of freedom is over. The politicians have stopped listening to the people – they are just doing what they want. Every Dr. I have spoken to in the last six months feel that health care is headed into a disaster. Most are outraged. The last one I spoke to was an ER Doctor. He plans on quitting the business and he's only 48.

It's time for sucession plans to be made. I expect Texas to be the first.

    66. MJP, Maryville Tenne says:

Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, and the rest of their select group (SEIU, AFL-CIO, Ayers, Soros, Karl Marx, and many more just don't have a clue. Who do they think they represent. Obviously not the average american. Have they ever considered the consequences if the "people" refused to pay taxes, especially new taxes they are trying to impose on everyone. It was bad enough they were trying to subvert what they considered he "rich".

It's time King Obama as he probably thinks he is and the three stooges Or should I say court jesters, which is what they act like when they talk to the press need to get a grip on it.

They have bought the economy, unemployment, and stimulus. It's their baby now. The question is how much and bad will they tank the country and our economy before something can be done. Nothing the present administration tries has worked, yet they continue to smile and party on.

What's it gonna take. Remember a thing called the tea party a couple of hundred years ago. I think their just the begining.

It is all about power and controll, he who has power has controll. Right now the dems, reid, pelosi and obama have the power, they are determined to make us a socialist country, or worse. The people have spoken about this BS and they do not listen, the votes have been bought and paid for with the pork barrell projects. We the tax payer have been robbed and raped again. When will we turn the tide on these thiefs and vote them out of office. I hope this country can last long enough and I will live long enough to see them thrown out on their collective butts.

    68. MJP, Maryville Tenne says:

Just a couple of more comments. Sorry.

      1. Obomacare as someone pointed out is similar to

the Social Security System. One big Ponsi

Scheme. Collect now. Payout later. Isn't that

what a number of people just went to jail for.

How legal is Obomacare or Cap and Tax, really.

      2. Also reminds me of what was prevelant a

      I MUST ASK HERE ;

HOW MUCH CORRUPTION , DUPLICITY, DECEIT, AND FRAUD, ARE WE AMERICANS WILLING TO ACCEPT?

OUR ELECTED REPS HAVE CAVED-IN UNDER PRESSURE AND THE "CLEANING HOUSE" SUGGESTED HERE IS WELL UNDERSTOOD FOR 2010.

DO WE ALL HANG AROUND FOR ANOTHER THREE YEARS OF "OBAMAISM", AS WE WATCH THIS COUNTRY CONTINUES TOWARDS "NO" SOUND LEADERSHIP?

I CAN'T IMAGINE OUR COUNTRY COMING OUT OF THIS MESS FOR DECADES. NOR CAN I IAMGINE THREE MORE YEARS OF "NO SOUND LEADERSHIP" TO GET THIS COUNTRY BACK ON IT'S ECOMNOMIC FOOTING.

IN THE MIDST OF THE MORASS OF THIS "HEALTH-CARE" BILL, I WOULD LIKE TO COMMEND THE WHOLE REPUBLICAN CONGRESS FOR HANGING TOUGH. GOING AGAINST THOSE WHO PROPOSE TO UNDERMINE OUR WHOLE CONSTITUTION AND IN THE FACE OF OBAMA'S LA-TI-DA ORATION, I GIVE THEM CREDIT. PLEASE DON'T FOLD.

    76. Lynn B. DeSpain says:

To keep it simple for us simple folks; the added tax alone is 2% of your gross income or $750, whichever is greater. That's not counting all the other stuff!

Fortunately, we still have two patriots in the Senate, Ensign and DeMint. They are forcing a vote on the Contitutionality of the Health Care Bill.

    77. Leith Wood, Virginia says:

No one who voted for Obamacare could love their country, the states they supposedly represent, the Constitution or freedom. It makes me sick that these kinds of men and women are in positions of power in Washington. We must keep working hard to kick them out in 2010 and Obama and his fellow facists in 2012.
