  • Outside the Beltway: New Yorkers' Tax Blues Are Driving Them Out

While Frank Sinatra wanted to wake up in a city that doesn’t sleep, today’s New Yorkers are looking to live in states where taxes aren’t so steep.

New York, whose state and local taxes are among the highest in the nation, is bleeding residents due in large part to the state’s extraordinarily high tax rate. According to a new study by The Empire Center for New York State Policy:

From 2000 to 2008, in both absolute and relative terms, New York experienced the nation’s largest loss of residents to other states—a net domestic migration outflow of over 1.5 million, or 8 percent of its population at the start of the decade.

Of those who left, 1.1 million were former residents of New York City. That means that the Big Apple lost one out of every seven city taxpayers.

And it’s not New York City’s giant sewer rats that are driving people away.

From the folks at the Empire State Center:

What accounts for New York’s chronic inability to attract and retain more Americans than it loses every year? Any attempt to answer that question must begin with New York’s state and local tax burden, perennially ranked among the heaviest in the country.  Taxes aside, likely explanations differ regionally. Downstate residents face high taxes and housing costs rated among the most “severely unaffordable” in the world.  Land-use regulations in downstate New York also tend to inhibit growth.  In upstate New York, housing is relatively inexpensive but even more heavily taxed, and new economic opportunities have been scarce.

While one-third of outbound New Yorkers seek sunnier clime and fresh-squeezed orange juice in Florida, that doesn’t mean that cold weather is the motivating factor behind the migration. The Empire Center notes that New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Minnesota have all seen increases in population, while New York’s has been shrinking.

The study’s prognosis? New York needs to change its ways:

This much is clear: with New York now facing the most serious fiscal and economic crisis in its modern history, government policies should be aimed at slowing down and ultimately reversing the state’s population drain.

One famous conservative has already pledged to leave. Last March, radio show host Rush Limbaugh, whose show is broadcast from Manhattan, proclaimed that he was “officially vacating New York” because he doesn’t want to foot the bill for a bloated government:

It’s punishing the achievers for the mistakes and the lack of discipline on the part of a bunch of corrupt politicians that have run that city and state into the ground for I don’t know how many years — and I, for one, am not going to take the blame for it.

Perhaps some tax cuts and fiscal responsibility are in order.

Good for you, Rush. New York doesn't deserve you or Ann Coulter, and look at it this way, you are no longer complicit with New York Communism, as a victim, you understand. Communism needs lots of victims. Democrats have controlled things a long time in New York and California. But then, that is good for Obama, bankrupt both coasts. Now there's a job killer you can believe in!

Look at Obama, giving jobs away to his friends (commies and miscreants), fellow Gang Members. I guess you have to be a Communist/Anti-American to be in this gang. You have to be indoctrinated like Barney Franks, a psychosis actually of the perfect immunity to reason. I figure Obama wants to position actual Communists (loyal to the movement, understand, not the United States) so the Saul Alinsky gambit works. You know the one, bury America in government debt. Gee, what Khruschev said "We will bury you!" has come true. I don't think the real Democrats will like how radicals serving a foreign interest bullied their way 'taking over' an American Political Party. I want to know if Democrats like it, a small Red faction of their Rainbow Coalition usurped their whole Party.

Then I want my Cold War Damage Assessment. I have been waiting, and no word, not a whisper. How can I get the American Damages? That's suspicious, we had a War. They attacked every part of our culture. What? Big bad bear and no damage? I seem to remember schools that actually educated. I remember when the ACLU actually protected civil liberties, and Democrats had brains. I remember American Industries that used to exist from Coast to Coast.

The whole point of Cold War PSYCHOPOLITICS (that's the name of a Russian book) was to befuddle the masses. The dogma propagandized in America has been distinctly Anti-American, hasn't it?

Take the Movies for example: All anti-business, notice? Chaos, murder and mayhem, anti heroes! Men are all stupid, did you know that? Movies say so, they beat the "dumb dad" theme to death. I learned the movie industry will only produce like one in ten movies. Yeah, the only ones to get through support the socialist dogma. Unmade are the great American movies, unborn are the conservative stars. This pack of talent? What we have been allowed to have, all a bunch of crazy indoctrinated, immune to reason. They were selected for success, probably, for their political beliefs. "Run down Amerika's morality!" I can almost hear the orders from the Kremlin.

Vast Left Wing Conspiracy? No, I'd call it Half Vast! Trouble with Commies is they have to be atheists to be good little fascists. If you believe in God you wouldn't dare destroy America. If you were a spirit you couldn't run people's lives like cattle, see? That would be too cruel to run other spirits around like that? Bet me! Half the Congress are secret atheists. Barney Franks comes out like Daffy Duck, Nancy Pelosi like the Good Witch from the "Wizard Of Oz." Then there's Uh-uh-uh-Obama, sometimes he sounds like Porky Pig. This show is really half vast, at best.

    3. Freedom of Speech, T says:

You cannot have "some" socialism or "some" marxism". The entire country has to be "re-invented". Power has to be maximized and wealth of the masses has to be diminished. People "HAVE TO REPLY" on government for socialism/marxism to work.

The middle class has to be marginalized.

If Americans don't soon realize what the end game is – it won't matter what state you go to.

The bigger government gets the more regulation will be imposed. And, the more Americans that rely on, and work for the government, the less people will be available to oppose an oppressive government.

We need a 10% flat tax and that is it. Keep your hands of people's pockets and allow them the "opportunity" to seek and obtain wealth.

    4. Freedom of Speech, T says:

      TYPE – O!

People need to RELY ON GOVERNMENT.

    6. Loyd Reddig, Weather says:

A 10% flat tax rate would cure a lot of Americas ills. Voting out all professional politicians would cure a few more.

without a doubt our government at federal and state levels have grown too bloated and far too big to suceed. Cut the funds off by electing only conservative candidates. Those who want a free lunch wont do that but smart voters will! Find out who is the most conservative and free enterprise supporting candidate and go for them!

    8. Tim AZ says:

It's nice to see the liberal dens throughout America are succumbing to sepsis. The only problem is that some of the infected are taking the infection with them to areas that have not been infected. I think we can beat this desease with diligence.

    9. Jerry from Chicago says:

Well, the New York liberals have gotten their way. Now all they have to do is pay for it.

I hope more and more of the average working people in New York come to the same conclusion as those who have "voted with their feet". Wouldn't it be sweet if all that were left in N.Y. were the liberals who thought all the government spending was a good thing? Then it would be they who wound up paying all the taxes necessary to support these government program recipients.

      Talk about peotic justice.

    10. M L P, Washington St says:

New York is further along socialism-communism, with wanting to "take from the wealthy and give to the poor- through the government". The citizens in America felt exactly the same with England and finally rought it to action. New York can do the same with the ballot box. Stop rewarding those doing failing work and policies! Elect those to office who have personal ethics and virtues who will work for the people of New York.

    11. Leon, Durango, CO says:

Yeah! Freedom Of Speech, Texas is right about the END GAME. It will be easy to refuse to pay taxes now that you are totally broke. Civil disobedience will be our only tactic in the END GAME, and it has already gone past the point where you can just move out of State. The half vast socialist conspiracy has really invaded every aspect of American life.

Sure, don't reply. Take down your mailbox, get off the grid, but VOTE the bastards out of office! Bring lawsuits and criminal charges against these Chicago Gangsters taking over our Country. Rat these criminals out! They actually are serving a foreign interest.

    12. D.S.M., California says:

What a sad thing you are. Unable to answer even such a simple question without falling back on references, genealogies and what other people call you.

Have you nothing of your own? Nothing to stand on that is not provided, defined, deliniated, stampted, sanctioned, numbered, and approved by others.

How can you expect to govern a country like the United States?

    13. Susan, Detroit says:

Let's destroy as many humans lives we can. that is the Democrats moto.
