  • WaPo Poll: Americans Still Oppose Obamacare

The Washington Post published a poll today finding that Americans oppose the Obama administration’s health care plan 48% to 45%. But the headline above, is not the headline the Post ran with. Instead they went with this: Public Option Gains Support: Clear Majority Now Backs Plan.

This headline is fundamentally misleading. By claiming that a “majority now backs plan” the Post makes it seem like there was some point in time when their polling suggested otherwise. That is simply not true. Looking at the poll results over the past six months, the Post found that a high of 62% of Americans supported the plan in June, a low of 52% in August and 55% just last month. And this month the percentage of Americans supporting the public plan skyrocketed from that 55 all the way to … 57%. That’s right: a whole 2% point rise in support of the public option and the Post spun it as “rebounded” support.

And isn’t that 57% in support of the public option 26 points fewer than the 83% support that the Employee Benefits Research Institute (EBRI) found? It is also 19 points lower than 76% support NBC News found and 16 points lower than 73% support Lake Research found. On the other end of the spectrum Rasmussen found that only 35% of Americans supported creating a government run insurance company.

The reality is that millions of Americans just do not know what the public option even is. According to Pew, just 56% of Americans even know it has anything to do with health care (banking and the environment were the other options given). Furthermore, what the public option would actually do varies greatly on how it would be structured. As analysis from both the Lewin Group and the Congressional Budget Office has confirmed, the number of Americans forced out of their current health insurance and into a government run program depends greatly on how the public option is structured.

Right now, Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pushing a version of the public option that, by tying premium levels for the new plan within 5% of Medicare, could nudge 83.4 million Americans onto the public plan. If poll respondents were made aware of this little fact, we doubt anywhere near a majority would support it.

AMERICA HAS BEGUN TO WAKE UP AND DOES NOT WANT THE

HEALTH CARE PLAN, OR OBAMA & GANG, OR NEW WORLD

      ORDER, BUT……..IT'S COMING ANYWAY….BECAUSE

WE THE SHEEPLE DON'T MATTER. ONLY THE ELITE WILL

      SURVIVE. GOD HELP US.!!!!!!

    2. Bobbie Jay says:

Really, Mr President, you can be insulting. You and your administration insisting we get our way of thinking through national news stations? Radio stations? Internet? No! Mr. President! WE THINK FOR OURSELVES AND GET THE WHOLE TRUTH THROUGH NEWS, INTERNET AND RADIO STATIONS THAT ARE RESISTANT TO YOUR BIAS, INTIMIDATING INFLUENCE. T'S CONFIRMATION AND EXPLANATION OF WHAT WE SEE AND HEAR HAPPENING.

ALTHOUGH YOU MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR MOST, YOU ARE VERY TRANSPARENT. YOUR PLAN WILL LEAD TO NOTHING BUT HIGHER DEBT, HIGHER COSTS AND THE DESTRUCTION OF AMERICAN PRINCIPLES AND VALUES. YOUR PLANS WILL LEAD TO AN UGLY "CHANGE" OF THE AMERICAN WAY WHICH WAS EQUAL TO ALL, CIVIL AND PEACEFUL AMONGST OUR FREEDOM TO LIVE WITHOUT DEPENDING ON YOU, MR. PRESIDENT! GET RID OF ALL THE PROGRAMS, THE MINORITY OF THE PEOPLE WILL LEARN HOW TO BUDGET TO GET IN THEIR MUCH CLAIMED NEED OF HEALTH INSURANCE. THEY COULD EVEN THINK TO MAKE IT A PRIORITY! LIKE THE RESPONSIBLE DO! WHAT A CONCEPT. RESPONSIBILITY…huh.

NOW LET THE FREE MARKET CONDUCT THE FREEDOM TO DO BUSINESS, let people do for themselves, MR. PRESIDENT.

YOU'RE PLAN IS NOT WANTED OR NEEDED AS LONG AS THE PEOPLE ARE FREE! FYI -NOBODY BUT YOU, MR. PRESIDENT, LET ME KNOW PERSONALLY WHO YOU ARE THE MINUTE YOU MENTIONED "HOPE AND CHANGE" WITHOUT SUBSTANCE!

    3. Sherry Dugas says:

Mr President, you, your czars, Pelosi and Reid are not representating the American people or what they want. You are forcing a substandard health care program on Americans while you and the congress will enjoy what researchers and the medical community have made so great. You are destroying the American way of life. You have highly insulted Christians, Jews, our military and all of those who have died for freedom. You, your staff, including your communist czars are sneaky and devious and many of us can see what you are doing. We have hope in God and our constitution, certainly not in you.

    4. Lloyd Scallan - New says:

Wow, what a surprise! A news paper is distorting the truth in favor of Obama. Dose anyone really expect any left-wing, liberal media outlet to do nothing but distort and lie to support Obama

and his socialist plan for our country?

    5. Ed Powers, NY says:

The healthcare system is flawed and needs to be reformed. But tell me that in 10 years we wont be snowed under a pile of debt and more continuing out of control costs as a result of current proposals and I will sell you the Brooklyn Bridge for a great price. In the end this another bite at the spreading the wealth apple. Plain and simple. We dont need more govt intervention and do nt neeed more taxes.

    6. Alan Pitts, Minneapo says:

Let's all focus our efforts on rejecting these commies in 2010 and 2012 and make sure that every candidate we support vows to repeal any policy that is passed!

    7. Carol Kauer, Rapid C says:

From the beginning of Obama's administration, I haven't seen any real progress from the Stimulus plan. So far everything they have told us as to how much money it will cost or bring in has been so far off it is would be laughable if it weren't so painful. They say the Healthcare plan is going to cost under a 850 billion dollars, plus 1/4 of a billion dollars for doctors. They haven't even begun to add up their "real" total costs as they haven't finished their bill yet! They seen to like to sneak in all of their "special interests". Also all Government employee's should be on the same plan and everyone else, especially since they are the ones that decide what should be in it!!!

Obama and his administration owe it to all Americans to be honest and up front with everyone. How can anyone trust any one when they work mostly behind closed doors?

Unemployment is rising and by the time they get done with all of their spending, new taxes and fee increases, no one will have any health care because it will be too expensive and the rich shouldn't be taking care of everyone. When you get something for nothing, you don't appreciate it and abuse it!

If our present health care isn't working, make changes in it. If they aren't smart enough to fix it, how can they recreate a new plan?? Wouldn't it be cheaper to revamp the system we have now than to scrap it and start over??

    8. Fred Burr, Binghamto says:

That ever decreasing segment of the population that actually works outside of government, and pays most of the taxes, should simply stop paying taxes to this thoroughly corrupt federal government. Time for the second American Revolution!

    9. MrShorty, Arizona says:

What I don't understand about this "government option" position that the liberal Democrats are taking is the instantaneous financial windfall it will be to corporate America.

If an insurance option is available for their employees, corporations will drop their support of existing plans and take those billions of dollars right to their bottom line. Think of all the relief that will be felt in the Board Rooms when the cost of health care is discussed each year and how to deal with the rising costs.

Can't you imagine how grateful management will be to the government for taking this "cost monkey" off their backs. With this new government option, if an employee has a problem with their coverage, management can just say "take your problem to the government, and get back to work".

I know this conclusion I have reached doesn't mesh exactly with the "anti-capitalistic" sentiment expressed daily by the Democrats, but it may be a vehicle to get us out of this recession (depression).

    10. philip says:

You Mr Obama, your czars, Nancy Polosi, Harry Reid, and ect. donot represent america or it's people you are a disgrace to the office you hold along with your hide be hind doors liars and so called spineless congress chair people in commities for unwanted legestation it is discusting your total disrespect and disire to over though the constutition of the united stases of america for your selfish goals we the people deserve better we do not need your health plan or govermemt take over of our mieda air way or ect. we are not stupid if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen

    11. Jeanne Stotler, Wood says:

I stopped watching news on NBC for the most part, but long before I had formed my own opinions. I was raised to believe that God created us with a free will and that you listened to what was said and weigh both sides. I have listened and I find that Obama, Ried, and Pelosi are arogant and they think we are not capable of making desions and that they are. Ibelieve in what our framers said and that it should be "Gov't. of the people, BY the people, and for the people" I never saw where it said if you were of another color, religion or nationality that it mattered. Let's take back OUR COUNTRY and truely have a Gov't. by the people, not one that controls the people, this includes Health care.

    12. Hamilton Lake, MN says:

It would be nice to believe that our Domestic Enemies can be voted out of office. If that were the case Cuba, Russia, and China would have voted the "Party" out long ago.

Alinsky's rules teach a Radical to force your enemy to play by his rules, while you don't.

To oppose these "Radicals" we need something more than "Tea Parties" and Non-violence.

As someone who has worked in our Health Care system since 1970's I can atest in my experience, the biggest cost comes from practicing "defensive medicine".

Regardless, healthcare reform IS NOT about healthcare, we all know this. It's about our Marxist Domestic Enemies taking control of our society.

Americans need to wise up, get tough, and fight back. These are not nice people, they will plow us under any chance they get!

      Ham

    13. Marilyn, Arizona says:

How pathetic it is that so many ill-informed and ignorant souls thought they were voting for someone "God-like" who would solve all the world's problems, heal the sick, cure the environment, and bring all mankind together! The unfortunate thing is those who voted for him don't have a clue who he really is, where he came from, or why he is here–and really don't seem to care. Others of us who have opened our eyes and studied his associations have learned that he is a fraud, a thug, and an egomaniac–not to mention a pompous — –and those are pretty much his good qualities. His agenda includes controlling all of our lives and breaking our Country financially so America will have to submit to a New World Order–where he and his Communist comrades will enjoy unlimited wealth at our expense. His goals will not take long to attain since there are too many people who are completely gullible and dependent on him for their survival. That's the way he wants it. All the signs are there.

    14. Hamilton Lake, MN says:

Why was the Second Amendment put in the Bill of Rights?

    15. redpens, PA says:

So this is hope and change? Hope to change from a free society to a socialist society, that's what Obama meant by fundamentally transform the United States. The Washington Post lies as usual. I agree with Fred, the whole country should not fill out tax returns this year. How long would it take for them to get to all of us? I say we do that, and the tyrants in our government will fail.

    16. julie charlton says:

I thoroughly agree with Fred Burr, it is time for the people to stand up to this administration and take back theri constitutional rights as citizens.

why is so much government being forced upon us, and where will it end. My grandchildren will pay dearly in taxes if they can find a job.

    17. JFK, Virginia says:

It is disappointing to learn of manipluations of Obama HC statistical poll results by the Post in order to present their false interpretation of the results and their madeup cconclusions that are not supported by the facts as you point out.

I don't think any Senior Citizen is fooled by this trickery and deceit, but rather becomes even more doubtful when the Post does report the truth.

I will be interesting to read of how the Post handles the Reformed, Revised, Quilted and Patched Health Care Legislation now being drawn up behind closed doors by Senate Conference.

Perhaps the Post will publish just their own interpretation in summary fashion, and not bother with actual 1500+ pages of actual HC legislation, seeking political concurrence with White House Executive and Congressional wishes.

    18. Jerry from Chicago says:

Of course the American public doesn't know what the public option is, because there is no single, consolidated bill to read yet. There are only five or six people working on it behind closed doors. Ultimately, it could be Harry Reid by himself that writes the final version of the bill.

UNtil it is finished, how can it be priced by the Office of Budget Management? How can it be debated on the merits of its provisions and the costs involved? The answer is, it can't.

Remember, this is the "bill" that Mr. Obama wanted rammed through prior to last August 1st.

Also remember Mr. Obama's pledge to have the provisions of the legislation debated over a round table panel of doctors, nurses, insurance company executives and Congressional representatives. All of which was to be televised on C-SPAN, in keeping with his policy of complete transparency in government.

    19. tennessee says:

anyone with any common sense needs to disallow any of his projects.

    20. Dean Austin says:

Better consider goooh.com instead of complaining and getting angry. It is time to act.

    21. Dean Austin says:

GOOOH is a plan to put all new representatives in congress by 2010. We must do this. No exceptions. Go to gooh.com and get a lesson in what action you can take. Talking on these web sites will not do a thing. Washington (the hill) is laughing at us.

    22. Leon, Durango, CO says:

Obama's shills (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNBC) in the Media are using Newspeak again. They say "Healthcare reform" in the poll question and assume the respondents mean Obamacare. We all would like Health Care to be reformed, Republicans and Independants, Democrats, even Libertarians. What I mean by reform is nothing like "One Payer," not mandated health insurance. I think reform should make healthcare more like it used to be: Go to the Doc and pay the man something fair. The problem of Health Care is that is has already been "Reformed" and now it has to be put back the way it was. Obama wants to destroy it (along with everything that was distinctly American.)

    23. Linda Carlsbad, CA says:

A few months ago, it seemed as I was only one of the few that made comments. I'am so happy to read what all of you are saying. Thank God, we are all standing up together to stop this radical administration from taking over every inch of our lives. Thank You!

    24. Normca says:

The Wash Post and New York Times and the majority of the rest of the newspapers are just not just telling the untruths; they are liars. [I trust that is not seen as an attack] They cover, soften and otherwise lie for a democrat, particular the democrat – socialist Obama. We saw yesterday how a poll contacted more democrats than Republicans and Independents to get the result that was pre-determined. My hope is as Obama goes along and is held accountable, as expressed in valid polls and held accountable in the governors' races in VA and NJ, the people of this country hold the newspapers and the rest of the biased media [MSM] responsible for their actions as well.

    25. BT, Port Allen, LA says:

just a question…it has been mentioned a few times (probably more but I don't have an exact count) to not pay our taxes because of the way the government is going..or has gone. My question is, what do you do when the IRS puts a lien on everything you own, take the money out of your paycheck and whatever else they do to get your money? I'm just curious. I agree with everything that has been said, but my question is WHAT DO WE DO?
