  • Morning Bell: Obamacare Invades Your Wallet

This Morning Bell is the first in a five-part week-long series on how Obamacare will affect you.

Throughout his campaign, and even in to the first few months in office, President Barack Obama repeatedly promised the American people that his health care plan would reduce their health insurance premiums by $2,500 a year. It has been a while since President Obama made that promise, and any honest look at the health legislation being considered in Congress explains why.

The Senate Finance Committee bill written by Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) (the Baucus bill) first drives up the cost of health insurance for all Americans and then forces everyone to buy it or face tax penalties or jail time. While the Baucus bill does cap out-of-pocket costs based on a person’s income, the effect on American families is still staggering. According to the Center for Data Analysis, the Baucus bill would:

And those numbers include the subsidies for health insurance in the Baucus bill. To pay for all this new health care spending, plus the massive expansion of Medicaid, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the Baucus bill will collect $4 billion in fines from those who do not purchase insurance, $200 billion taxing health insurance companies with generous health plans, and $25 billion in taxes on employers. Not to mention the billions in cuts to Medicare payments to hospitals which will result in significant cost shifting to consumers.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has done a study on what all these new taxes and regulations will do to Americans health insurance premiums and the results are not pretty. Instead of reducing the average family’s health insurance premiums by $2,500 per year, as President Obama promised, the Baucus bill would actually raise them by $4,000 more than they would have been without reform.

The Baucus bill spends at least $1 trillion, fails to cover all Americans, taxes employers for creating jobs, and inflicts higher out-of-pocket health care costs on all Americans. We can do better.

    Quick Hits:

    • The Democratic National Committee was forced to pull an ad on supporting Obamacare featuring Bob Dole after the former Kansas senator complained it was misleading.
    • Eight years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the United States still has no reliable system for verifying that foreign visitors have left the country.
    • On ABC’s This Week, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said President Obama must approve General Stanley McChrystal’s recommendations for an additional 40,000 troops on the ground in Afghanistan.
    • According to the BBC, despite the fact that no computer model predicted it, for the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures.

I guess that if anyone thinks there aren't going to be tax increases to pay for this healthcare debacle, they must live on Mars. Why are we wasting our valuable time on healthcare when the unemployment rate is hovering around 10%? Why are we still talking about tax increases and another round of 'stimulus' if we have no real plan to kick start the economy today, we know the first stimulus didn't do much of anything other than to increase the deficit to over a trillion dollars. It's sad that we have to have so many people struggling and don't have the private sector jobs to support those that want to work. The only good news in all of this is that we can finally see, firsthand, what the democratic party has actually become, a pathetic group of arrogant individuals who think they are all that matter.

    2. Jim, Snohomish, Wash says:

The Price Water House forcast is as good as any information coming out. You cannot trust the CBO since Nobel Prize winner Obama after took the head of CBO into the White House for a Saprano moment, Chicago style. The CBO then changed thier forcast to fit the Obama adminstration's forcast. And the beat goes on. How is hope and change working for you? MMM MMM MMM Barack Husein Obama!

    3. Mike Baker - McKinne says:

Currently my health care for my wife and I cost $3,900 per year with my employer paying the balance….however with the Senate program my employer will drive everyone to the government program and at my salary of just under $100k my health care cost will soar to over $12,000 per year a 300% increase in my cost….great job USGov…..

    4. William Cole - Texas says:

CONTROL, CONTROL, CONTROL: This administration and congress is only focused on controlling the American public. Their proposals have no more to do with health cate reform than I do flying the next space shuttle mission. REMEMBER: Elitists, Wards of the state and Slaves to the state. Which one of these three classes will capture you?

    5. matthew queens, ny says:

Why on earth are there still people who support the democrats on this train wreck called health care reform?

Most reasonable people do not believe the overstated claims by those on the left about man-made global warming. Yet that doesn't seem to stop them on their march to wreck our economy!

Could you imagine Pres. Lincoln ignoring the advice of Gen Grant in the spring of 1864, after he brought him east? Yet that seeems to be what Obama is doing to Gen. McChrystal after he appointed him to run the war effort in Afghanistan!

    6. Jan Harrison, Tucson says:

At a higher income you are saying Senators believe my health care to cover my flu, physical or cancer cost more than someone that makes less? Their flu virus is a discounted flu virus mine is gold plated?

      Whats that all about?

    7. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

Tax and spend is all the dems and obama know. We as citizens have been lead down a rosey path, and it stinks. We must vote in 2010 and put these fools in the street, or loose all this country stands for. He lies, and I don't care if Congress and pelosi want to centure me on my statement.

    8. Dean Gilchrist - Oca says:

I hope you do better the rest of the week! All I've learned so far is that food housing and utilities are also expensive! This sounds to me like you are trying to scare people. I thought you could do a better analysis.

    9. Atl says:

      Universal Healthcare makes me sick.

    10. Christopher Popham S says:

Does Sen. Feinstein (D-Cal)have any family serving in Afghanistan? Was she present in Congress on the day that they had a moment of silence for Michael Jackson? Has Congress ever taken the time to have a moment of silence for the

young troops, who have lost their lives in Iraq

or Afghanistan? Is Sen. Feinstein aware of the real reason that we are engaged in Afghanistan?

The real reason is the protection and security of a proposed pipeline from oil rich Siberia, through

Afghanistan, and on into Pakisatani ports on the Arabian Sea. From there, tankers transport the oil

to oil hungry far east countries. As with Iraq,

it really is all about the oil and the military and industrial complex is complicit in this ongoing agenda, while our young men and women lose

limbs and lives so that they (the oil companies)

      can ultimately reap huge profits.

This is not conspiratorial. Just do the research.

Seven major oil companies plus the U.S. miitary

equals sacrificing of young lives and $$$ profits

      for armchair warriors.

Sen. Feinstein needs to correct her priorities.

      BTW–is she up for re-election in 2010?

    11. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

Anyone who believes that the Government is NOT the 'public's enemy number one', is a fool!

Nowadays a politician's mindset is to 'rule', not represent. 'Power' is his narcotic.

Unfortunately, there are too many fools who are allowed to vote and their ignorance is what the "Political Ruling Class" feeds upon.

    12. Wm. J. &Mary E. says:

It's getting more and more obvious to us that we

are headed for destruction. All our freedoms ! Even our vote has been prostituted. The sooner we

get to the bottom of the pit the better. Maybe

then, we'll have enough guts to start climbing

out. I guess Geo. Soros is a having a tingle up

      both his legs!

    13. Bob Veigel, Arlingto says:

Everything Obama is doing is invading, not only my wallet, but my freedom. He and his group are very deceitful, dangerous and destrucive.

    14. gary, colorado says:

with all of the liberal socialist Democratic anti-

      American and anti-Constitutional activities,and

proposals—-after the 2010 elections, we should not forget about treason, illegal activities and

      Impeachment!!!!!

    15. Tater Salad says:

      One word: Socialism

    16. Ted Moore Grand Pra says:

I have a question, with unemployment at a 26 year high and projected to get worse, how and who is going to pay for the left's taxing programs like the healthcare reform, the energy tax, the enormous debt already compiled, I guess if the Bacus bill passes we will have plenty of jobs building jails to house all of us with no jobs, no money, and if something is not done soon to rid us from the monopoly that the left has in Washington, NO FUTURE,god help us.

    17. Tater Salad says:

To the Democrats in Congress who don’t quite get it: I want to offer a personal pledge. I – and a lot of other people – have every intention of removing you from Congress in the next election if you stand in the way of health care legislation that the people want. That is not a hollow or idle threat. We will come to your district and we will work against you, first in the primary and, if we have to, in the general election. We do not want the "Public Option"…..period!

    18. Doc Hilliard, Calif. says:

      Obama's Scare = ObamaScare = obamacare = disaster

    19. dtruly, Waxahachie T says:

It seems the White House is outraged at publication of this information. However, their outrage does not include any factual information offered to support their position. Their approach is merely to attack the messenger. That speaks volumes when one seeks to determine who to believe. The administration's moving target health plan appears to be a smoke and mirrors move to remove competition and freedom.

    20. Jim Cowen Jr Westla says:

Obamacare is turning into the biggest hoax communicated to the American people..Legislators cannot be trusted to act in the best interests of the majority of U.S. citizens..Is any one in Washington listening to the majority of Americans effected by this farce of legislation? Who will stand up and bring economic reality to the forefront?..Washington is trying to bankrupt our economic system and impede the growth element that is so badly needed in our business economy..

    21. Ron Derry NH says:

Listening to the Obama administration sell its health care package is tantamount to a gangster holding a gun to your head telling you the need for a protection package before someone threatens you and you get hurt.

No-one made Obama spend 787 billions dollars to earmark his friends and cohorts as a ruse to escaping the economic crunch from Congresses mismanagement of financial laws. His need to fleece the American system of health care to pay for this fiasco and his desire to let congress right laws that threaten americans with jail time and fines proves we have gone from a free nation to a fascist dictatorship with his leadership.

It doesn't matter if illegals will be covered or if medicare will be robbed; what matters is that America is tolerating a fascist coup and is arguing about its financial cost and not its principle cost.

This is a huge blow against America , to have its very representatives so desperate to fund their agenda that they would run the economy into the ground, steal Americans value to help fund more and then rob the future with increased debt, lies and reckless Marxist idealism.

The fleecing of our wallets is the least of the threats we are experiencing.

    22. Len Dorrian, York ME says:

Obama is an expert at saying one thing that sounds good while doing the opposite that is bad for many.

    23. billie bryant says:

what obama has done is brainwash the young people of this country? he did not have to brainwash ALL the ILLEGALS & POOR BLACKS as they will follow ANYBODY with a story? obama is absolutely the worst thing that has ever happened to free america! he is a socialists with communists ties & youth of america are to stupid to understand as they are so busy NOT working & drawing unemployment & finding ways to get ANYTHING for free!

    24. RAYMOND R. RIBAL - B says:

GREAT COMMENTS BEY EVERYONE! WHEN ARE ALL GOING TO START FLOODING THEIR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES INCLUDING THE PRESIDENT WITH THEIR REAL THO'TS AND REAL ALTERNATUVES AS I HAVE AND WILL BE DOING IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THIS COMMENT!

    25. Nancy/Mississipppi says:

      Well, Friends,

Here we are, once again, and it all boils down to this:

Stand up and fight and fight hard, or lie down and give up. It is up to us, whether we go fighting or go being dragged along.

This will not end, unless we stop it. Deceit and discord go hand in hand. That is NOT America!!! America, "the home of the free and the brave" will not give in to this garbage Obama is dishing out!!!

    26. RAYMOND R. RIBAL - B says:

EVERYTHING I COMMENT IS NOT SPELLED TO WELL ON ACCOUNTA I'VE ONLY ONE HAND TO USE DUE TO A 2005 STROKE! I NEVER ATTACK, NEVER USE OBSCENITIES AND NEVER SAY ANYTHING IN PERSON OR IN PRINT THAT I'D NOT SAY IN FRONT OF ANYONE! THE COMMENT PRIVILEGE IS MOST APPRECIATED. THANKS MODERATOR! SORRY THIS REMINDER EVEN NEEDS TO BE SAID IN A "CIVIL" SOCIETY! GOD BLESS!

    27. Stephen Wahls Loomis says:

This effort is in preparation of human immortality ("man will be immortal in as little as 20 years") who better than the government to decide who gets to live and not? The people we have in our government have been thinking about this and this may be the driving issue. They feel they need to control everything.

    28. Nancy/Mississipppi says:

PS: It is pre-arranged. We have been duped to believe that BHO is the answer to "change". He did NOT invent that word or concept. From long ago, this time was set forth by former dictatorships, and BHO is the guy of arrogance that now holds the cards. He Thinks!! We will NOT give up….

    29. Stephen Wahls Loomis says:

This may be an effort to take the profit out of medicine to stall the development of immortality products or to gain medical control to make them available only for the elite.

    30. Patricia Ventimiglio says:

I know that the Republicans have GREAT ideas for healthcare reform and have talked about them but can they PLEASE talk to Americans about the final cost of their plans. I think this would clear up a lot of questions on this topic. They have to explain what their plans will cost so that all America can see how right they are about this very important issue.

I have Blue Care Network in Michigan ( a non-profit HMO) and I pay close to 12K (through my business) a year for my wife and daughter. At first glance the proposed is appealing -but in the end all of the negatives come into play and I will NOT fall for the federal bait and switch health plan. I doubt I will see a return on the Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security plan I have been paying into for the past forty years let alone the "Obamacare" fiasco.

On another matter, the failure to predict the cooling trend (lack of warming)for the past eleven years is due to the lack of solar flares and not human behavior. But then, you can't tax the sun.

    33. Randall Doc Fleck, F says:

Quite simply… I don't believe the figures in your report.

The right has lied and balked and cried wolf on health care from the start.

Stop playing politics and start getting busy fixing the problems of health care. We're #37 in quality and availability of health care on the list of industrialized nations of the world.

      Pitiful!

    34. Dr.Louis A.Fanning,C says:

With regard to Afghanistan: I believe Our Leader is stalling (he already has an approved plan) the sending of the called for reinforcements to Afghanistan because he believes that his domestic agenda will come up for what he believes will be a favorable vote in the congress within the next few weeks and if he authorizes the sending of 40 or more thosand men to Afghanistan he will lose the anti-war vote and thus his domestic agenda will be defeated. This alone should show disbelievers the total immorality of the Obama regime

    35. Conservative Patriot says:

In his speech to the joint houses of Congress on September 9, 2009, to stump for National Health Care Reform, the President compared our health care to that of other nations saying, “We are the only advanced democracy on Earth – the only wealthy nation – that allows such hardships for millions of its people.”

What President Obama failed to point out is, while other countries may provide medical coverage to all their citizens, many of their citizens come to the United States seeking the medical treatment they cannot obtain at home. What good is medical coverage, if you cannot obtain the necessary medical treatment?

Conservatives, Moderates, and Liberals are unifying against “Nation Health Care Reform” for the aforementioned reason and others, a few of which I will identify here.

Let's see: 34140 is 3 times the Federal Poverty level (Federal Poverty level must be $11,380); 69480 is 300% above poverty (poverty level must be $17,370); $45,520 is 400% above poverty (poverty level must be $9104); and 92,640 is also 400% above poverty.

Are these impressive numbers from the Center for Data Analysis?

Does anyone check their math? :)

    37. Lee-White Tanks AZ says:

    39. Cindy H, Texas says:

The battle is to get as many Americans involved in fighting for their freedoms. I just wrote my e-mail to all my Congressional reps and I challenge everyone reading this article to make their next action to send their message that this bill needs to be solidly defeated. It is a waste of taxpayer money to spend any more time on this bill. I want effective laws & programs that help Americans–and most of the time that means fewer of them.

    40. James Raider, WA says:

The top of the financial food chain with the government’s help wants to prejudice your perception toward positive spending.?

    41. gary j, kalamazoo says:

This President and his administration have one underlying goal………to unravel the greatest democratic nation in the world…bringing it to its knees and to a level equal to lessor nations. Obama has his own personal goal…..to raise his status and appeal to the Muslim world at whatever cost to liberty and justice in America….national healthcare is just another step in this agenda…..If unchecked Obama, will build (as he publicly prophecied) through income redistribution and uncontrolled borders his national army of Obamists. They are already chanting his name in Detroit for the monetary handouts that about to occur there.

There is an old adage….."figures can lie and liars can figure". This defines this administration because lying is considered by them a justified means to achieve their goals.

Hang on to your guns, because we are going to need them! P.S…my Mother approved this message

    42. Chris N, Albuquerque says:

It's nice to see that it's only going to cost me alot more on health care than what I am currently paying now. Who's going to pick up the tab for the more than 1 billion that the state of New Mexico is short. I guess I'm going to have to help pay for that also. I guess if I just quit working and not paying any taxes then I will get the better deal of this. Because where I sit right now it's not looking to good for folks, like me. You know that kind the middle class income folks, that go to work and work 49 weeks of the year and really don't take a vacation, and if we do it's only for 3 or 4 days at the most. Thanks Mr. President and Speaker of the house, for helping me get into the poor house alot quicker.

It is staffed with excelent Drs,-no matter what anyone says

This obamaCare would not include me,tho I would have to join or be fined and sice I am 88,I would be excluded from any care.

      So what is he thinking?

The same as with anything else,he wants to bring our country to it`s knees, and into socialism.

If he has everyone in line for this and pass the cap and trade making us pay so much more for energy, and restrict us from keeping our homes warm enough ,or cool enough, they would have our lives controlled.

also they would stop us from free assembly at churches, because I think we have a muslim for a Presidentwhy else would he bow to the Saudi prince

I understand that as soon as the health bill is signed, then we will soon begin paying premiums, but the actual health reform will not be enacted until 2013. Then if you can't pay, 25,000 Dollar fine or jail? They better build more prisons. I really don't understand how they believe Americans can pay those amounts when Americans have no jobs. Also, Michelle is a big advocate of eating "healthy" and wants all Americans to do the same. People can barely buy beans, Milk and Bread. Do you know how much it costs to buy all that healthy food & not counting organic foods? Those people up there on Capital Hill are so out-of-touch. It's beyond comprehension the "change" that is going to destroy us. I am angry at all the corruption that is being blatantly forced down our throats. We need to repeal all laws enacted by this administration when we get "the phonies" out of office!

If crap and trade passes with the prediction of $1700 a year per household, we will not be able to live on our current income.

How many more senior citizens are in the same position that we are?
