  • Morning Bell: The 'Tax and Spend' Left are Back with a Vengeance

According to exit polls, Americans who voted last November 4th described themselves as 34% conservative, 44% moderate and only 22% liberal. One third of new voters were independents — and about two-thirds of them voted for President Barack Obama. How did President Obama win over so many moderates and independents? By explicitly renouncing his party’s tax and spend past. Specifically, Obama promised to “cut taxes for 95% of workers and their families” and enact “a net spending cut” for the federal government. Not only has President Obama failed to keep these promises, but his leftist base is stepping up their campaign for massive new tax hikes and spending increases.

Obama’s ‘no tax increases on families making $250,000 a year or less‘ lasted exactly 15 days. On February 4th, the President signed into law a bill expanding the children’s health insurance program that was paid for with a 156% tax hike on tobacco. Since slightly more than half of today’s smokers (53%) earn less than $36,000 per year, there is no way this bill can not be considered a tax hike on the poor. Democrats in the House have also passed  a trillion dollar energy tax hike, and the Senate is about to approve new taxes on individuals who don’t have health insurance, businesses that want to create jobs, and on families with high cost health insurance plans. But even all those new taxes are just the beginning. This past Monday on Charlie Rose, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said a new value-added tax (VAT) is “on the table” as well.

A VAT is a type of national sales tax. However, instead of being collected at the cash register, it is imposed on manufacturers at each “value added” stage of the production process. Since everybody buys stuff, including families making less than $250,000 a year, any VAT would necessarily break Obama’s no tax hike promise. Worse, a VAT would expand the size of government, inadvertently increase income tax rates, and destroy jobs.

And it is that last part, the destroying jobs part, that should most worry Americans today. The latest Bureau of Labor and Statistics report released last Friday contained some truly sobering employment numbers that completely undercut any claims that the President’s $787 billion stimulus plan is working. Every aspect of the labor market in September was negative. The labor force participation rate fell to 65.2 percent, the lowest point of this recession and the lowest rate in 25 years. The unemployment rate increased by only 0.1 to 9.8 percent, but the unemployment rate would have been higher had 571,000 not left the labor force. The male unemployment rate reached 10.3 percent, the highest level since the Great Depression.

So what is the left’s answer to the President’s failed spending? More spending. The New York Times editorial board recommends “more stimulus to spur job creation” or “a large federal jobs program” or, we love this one: “surprise us.” Not to be outdone, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman is suggesting the federal government should raise its deficit stimulus spending to at least $1.2 trillion. And none of this even includes the trillion dollar price tag for Obamacare or President Obama’s long-term budget which would permanently keep annual spending between $5,000 and $8,000 per household higher than it had been under President George W. Bush.

This problem is bigger than any one man, no matter who he or she is. You have a broken congress who are lawyers not businessmen. Polarized bickering has beset action for years and politicans have sold their sole to lobyists.

We are in uncharted waters, with no blue collar workeforce to employ to put back to work. Unlike the war mobilization act, we have no war to employ millions, so what's gonna pull this out of the mud? No lending, service Low-paying jobs, some IT jobs, yes health care but that's gonna be under assult soon; so what's gonna do it? I do not see it, nor does those in government. Clearly TALK won't.

    2. Pablo Florida says:

I JUST DON'T GET IT. With all the government spending it just does not add up. Now I hear another spending spree is in order?? I for one am concerned that someone in europe may be watching our money junkies.I hope someone in D.C.wakes up before it's too late. Whats with our government? Did'nt they go to school? Are they trying to ruin our country? I know that im not alone in my thinking. Wake me from this nightmare. Now the VAT tax???? WOW

    3. Christopher Popham S says:

On my website in December of 2007, http://www.popham08.com,
I warned America that if we elected a democratic

Presidential candidate, that they would tax us to

death. And so today, the failed promises of

Barack Hussein Obama, taxations that infringe upon

and invade every corner of business and society at

large, creating an ever increasing government bureaucracy and deficit spending unprecedented in our history.

This morning on talk radio I heard a satirical

scenario, suggesting that the President is indeed

bi-polar and, as any psychiatrist worth his license to practice knows, tendency toward narcissism and

the constant spending of huge amounts of money are

true indicators of this affliction. Speculation was then presented has to how much 'better off' we might

be with Biden as Pres. and Pelosi as V.P.

May God help the United States of America, but 53%

of the people put them in office, so we must

      muddle though somehow.

    4. Myers, work says:

I would like to know what impeachable offenses the President is making. I think that he should be impeached for the things he is doing. He is endangering the country with his lack of defense knowledge. Also, he needs to leave the sheriff in Arizona alone. He has proven that his way of doing things works. Obama does not need to control everything.

    5. Ken in Santa Barbara says:

According to the same source and article you cite in your quick hits about Mr. Arpaio, his ability to make immigration arrests has not taken away and the Arizona governing board are not a shoe in to back Arpaio.

Another stretch by the author to glaze over the facts and foment contempt. Mr Arpaio is a mixed bag of high risk management to Maricopa county, misstatements and inappropriate tactics that put his conceivable good in jeopardy.

      According to your reference:

"Mr. Arpaio conceded that the vast majority of the 33,000 arrests of illegal immigrants his office has made in the past two years under the agreement followed a check on the immigration status of people in jails. About 300 have been arrested in the field during “crime suppression” operations, he said. He called those arrests symbolically important." Homeland security has signed an agreement with Arpaio for the jail checks and has only withheld the agreement for field arrests.

      again in your reference:

"Mr. Arpaio signed that agreement, but it still must be approved by the county’s governing board. The board has been sympathetic to Mr. Arpaio on immigration matters, but he suggested the vote was far from a done deal."

Other news sources in Arizona are far less sympathetic to the world's toughest sheriff. He has cost Maricopa County proportionately more money in lost and negotiated law suits than its counterpart in L.A.

Please pick a more worthy model of law and immigration enforcement and when you do please report all the facts.

    6. LeRoy Reed says:

We scream rant and rave, but Obama and friends are still trying to do us in!!!!!! Something must be done to stop the madness!!!!

    7. Dan Smyth , Fort Lau says:

In regards for my last message, I have said this and more at the dinner table with my mother and father, and my step mother and father.

My children will not vote for president until there is a viable candidate that has a record of supporting the Constitution, but just a lapel pin!

    8. Lloyd Scallan - New says:

It is no surprise to anyone with half a brain that

Obama lied during the campagin and continues to lie each and every day. We had better reconize and understand in the grandiose plan of Obama and the socialist and Marxist, is to drive us into such dept, it will cause our economy to collapse

under hyper-inflation, thus making our dollar almost worthless. This, of course, will destroy our savings and our American way of life, which is the final goal of Obama and his henchmen.

    9. onlyinamerica1,Louis says:

Just wanted to say I just can't comprehend how all our government officals get elected with all their campaign promises that turn out to be lies! Most all of them do it,then we are supposed to trust them,It just blows my mind! They think they are above us.I guess the reason they do it is because they get away with it.I guess it's our fault for allowing it to happen.I THOUGHT THEY WORK FOR US!!At least that's what I was told in school. They are taking over this country because nobody is paying attention!Fellow Americans,PLEASE WAKE UP!Before it's TOO LATE! God Help Us All!They don't have our best interest in mind, only theirs! Please get involved

    10. Space Bisbee,Az says:

Lies, lies, and more lies, The Obama Administration!! Has this man told the truth yet?

    11. Bob Veigel, Arlingto says:

True, but also true, many Republicans love to spend. They talk a good game, but then when push gets to shove, they fold. That is one of the reasons the Party is out of power today. Unless the conservatives in the Party can wield enough strength and convince the RINO's and elites that mimicking the Democrats is not the answer, the drouth could go on for a long time. And the conservative message should be spouted day after day after day. Even if it might cost votes.

    12. Peter Simmons Lee, M says:

I cannot imagine any politician making a promise then purposely breaking that promise once elected.

I voted for Obama but if I knew what he would do regarding taxes I never would have voted for him.

If he will break this promise he will break any promise!

    13. John, Colorado says:

"Worse, a VAT would expand the size of government, inadvertently increase income tax rates, and destroy jobs."

And worse than that, it would make no difference, Congress would continue to overspend, and do so on things that weaken the nation, destroy the economy, overflow the country with illegal immigrants and Jihadists, and leave us prone to EMP attack.

Those 44% moderates deserve the hell to which their ignorance is enslaving them. America appears to be getting judged right now.

    14. Ella QUINN N.C. says:

How can they be so cruel to undermine us citizens and have another tax called a vat tax.I wish more people would come on this web cite and read this.Thank you heritage for all your information.More people need to watch fox news also.Obama and nancy have money so they donot care about us, they are living in their own big world of evil, and they have plenty of money. They really think they are better than us average citizens.I would love to come face to face with them, and tell them a lot about us and how tired we are of this bull you know what.i cannot stand to look at their evil faces.

    15. aChuckL, NV says:

Wow!!! Someone has finally published what I have been saying about the "FAIR TAX' or Value Added Tax, for over 50 years. It is simply a massive tax upon those who cal least afford it. It is massively regressive and can only be corrected to neutrality with massive records keeping and accounting procedures.

The correct solution to the tax problem is not at all difficult. Replace the whole income tax system of the country with a "FLAT TAX" which has a single exemption that is a multiple of the annualized minimum wage.

    16. Don, Centennial,CO says:

Conservative values will save us if we ever get the chance. Less spending, more for defense, less regulation and so on. We have to keep the pressure on all representatives, and senators.. It is the only option we have at this point. In 2010, we have to throw the bums out, but I only hope we can survive until then.

    17. Carolyn, Illinois says:

If we keep talking it might go away. Is anyone out there doing anything to stop all of this? Anyone making calls, sending letters, faxes, emails? It helps, believe me I know. I feel as though I stopped the Dream Act last year because because of all my calls and emails. Of course I didn't really, but I helped!!! Even though it may be hard to do it, we must if we want to save the country. How about checking out some of the programs initiated because of all the government abuse. Try 912, or Campaign for Liberty. I know there are others. Find one that fits you. This nightmare is going to continually worsen until the United States is no more.

How can anyone defend this reckless spending of our hard earned tax money? Are you kidding! They use our money like our pockets are their private ATM's! This country is being destroyed, our freedoms disappearing, liberty, speech.

Stop calling names! Look what is happening! Our children and our grandchildren will be burdened with this spending!

Stop the spending, stop everything until we the people can take back our country!

Stop the corruption! The beltway boys have no idea what reality is! Representing me? Really?

      God please help us!

    20. Wallyblu, Zion, IL says:

"We have spent too much and it's ruining the Economy". What's the Obama solution? Spend more money.

If this would work, someome who bought a home they couldn't afford and is going into forclosure should buy a motorhome and boat.

    21. George, Tiger ,Ga. says:

I pray our LOrd and Savior Jesus Christ will let us live at least to the next ELECTION so all these intelegent people can find them another job.

    22. George, Tiger ,Ga. 3 says:

It's sad that our goverment has no idea what WE the people need or want.

    23. TREVOR MERCHANTBRONX says:

ANYONE WITH KNOWLEDGE AND OR CURRENCY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT ALL WHICH BARACK OBAMA WAS SAYING DURING THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF THE YEAR 2008 BOTH AT THE PRIMARY AND PRESIDENTIAL LEVELS WERE FLAWED . FOR SUCH A SIGNIFICANT PERCENT OF CONSERVATIVES SOCALLED TO HAVE VOTED FOR THIS MAN IF THIS INFORMATION AND OR DATA IS TRUE AND CORRECT CONFIRMS MY ARGUEMENTS AND DOCTRINES AS TO THE DEFICIT OF SO MANY PEOPLE BEING UNREAD UNINFORMED AND UNEDUCATED OR EVEN MORE LACK SINCERITY OF PURPOSE SUCH AS A FRIEND WHEREIN A REAL FRIEND WILL NEVER DETER AND OR LEAVE FROM SUCH GLORIOUS PATHWAYS AS A FRIEND . THE DAVID LETTERMAN?S ISSUE IS ONE EXAMPLE AS TO WHERE WE ARE AS DEFUNCTS WHEREIN EVENWHEN THIS MAN MIGHT HAD COMMITTED SEXUAL HARRASSMENTS MANIPULATIONS AND EXPLOITATIONS OF HIS FEMALE WORKERS YET STILL HIS AUDIENCE INCREASED NEARLY FIFTEEN [15] OR SO PERCENTAGE POINTS DURING THE DAYS AFTER . HOW ABSURD AND THE LACK OF DUE DILIGENCE CAN WE AS TWENTY FIRST HUMAN BEINGS BECOME . I THANK YOU TREVOR MERCHANT BRONX NEW YORK CITY . WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 07.2009

    24. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

What is new with this information, obama is so full of himself he doesn't know the truth from a lie. The vote for "hope and change" is not what people wanted when the vote was given. I hope people can now see what a huge mistake has been made, and that in 2010 a "change" is made that will give us some "hope".

    25. Ken Jarvis - Las Veg says:

Obama DID cut taxes for workers

with his More-Take Home Pay Tax Cut,

that YOU may not know about,

because the HF and other Cs don't want you to know about it.

    26. Darla, Idado says:

Whoopty-do, Ken Jarvis. More Take Home Pay. What about the rest of us who are losing jobs left and right and now we can't buy things to survive because taxes have increased their prices?

    27. Kate Moran, New York says:

It grows more frustrating with each report. Is there no way to stop this?

    28. Judith in Michigan says:

Yes, indeed, Mr. Jarvis, Mr. O did enact this "tax Cut" (actually, it is a tax credit officially). But, wait don't go buy that big screen tv or put a deposit on that dream vacation just yet. The tax "cut" amounts to an average $13.00 (Gasp!) per week. Plus come next tax day, a lot of folks are in for one big surprise. A large portion of that money will have to be repaid. Too complicated to go into here, but the details are available on the web.

Knew you would appreciate the real facts, so here you go.

      Your welcome.

    29. Jean Weingartner,Fl says:

IT'S CALLED ACORN,SEIU,MICKEY MOUSE,DONALD DUCK,THE DEAD,KOOL-AIDE DRINKERS AND OR LAZY MOOCHERS,THEN THERE ARE THE CLUELESS.

    30. Bobbie Jay says:

Mr. Jarvis, I read your comments often. But you do not think things all the way through. What seems like good intention FROM GOVERNMENT, drives negative consequences that overwhelms anything good…JUST LIKE THEIR HEALTH CARE GOVERNMENT DEPENDENCY PROGRAMSSSSSSSSS, MANY, MANY MORE AND MORE TO COME.

    31. Herman Kohlman says:

      Has the so-called non-negotiable

instruments that Congress issued to replace the funds the "skimmed" out of the so-called Medicare Trust Fund annually into the figures on the health care legislation?. They are considerable!!.

      Herman Kohlman

      Health Policy Analyst

    32. coconut willy Hawa says:

All you freedom loving Americans should read up on the "Fair Tax" proposal for yourselves. This consumption tax removes the IRS, no more filing tax returns, lets you keep the money you earn and lets you decide when and if you pay taxes when you purchase new merchandise or services. Best of all it keeps Congress from tinkering with your tax money and finally reaps tax dollars from the people that do not pay taxes, illegal aliens, anyone involved in illegal activities and the people who get special previledges under the current income tax code. Go to "fairtax.org" and be amazed.

    33. Ted Moore Grand Pra says:

I hope that the moderates and independents are paying attention to the broken promises by Obama, our only hope in stopping this tax and spend attitude is to vote out these politicians who refuse to listen to the people that put them in office. I cannot believe that Americans will stand by and let this administration destroy small business, the middle class, and the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION,we all need to pray that Americans will be awake during the 2010 elections and the 2012 elections, and unlike what senator John McCaian says that the republican party needs to be more moderate,we need CONSERVATIVES NOT MODERATES, is not this the reason the republicans lost the last presidental election.

    34. Mike Sheahen, Hickor says:

      The bottom line is this:

For so-called "Progressive (Leftist)" government elitists and statists such as Obama and his Comrades, it's all for and about grabbing as much power and money as quickly as they can, no matter what it takes, under any pretense they can fabricate and muster, even before they or anyone else can even read the things they impose, even against the expressed will of the people, all in the name of "the people", of course, and woe be unto anything or anybody, as far as they're concerned, which or who is opposed to them.

So of course Obama and his Comrades are engaging "full speed" their antics and machinations with a vengeance against all the time they have been delayed, and against all of the people who have fought, and even died, since before the days of the Left's Karl Marx, and all of the people who continue to fight, and even die, to save freedom from destruction by their government elitist and statist power and money-grabbing ways.

    35. Ron, Derry NH says:

The only reason Obama got elected is America couldn't accept an 80 year old has been who couldn't hide the puppet strings of who his wandering loyalties were to…but Obama disguised, with the help of the press his puppet strings from those too willing to accept the presses euphoric pandering.

Now we have to deal with the resulting lies, thievery and unleashing of the plan to devaluation the American dollar and increased taxation to anoint socialism into the American psyche.

The remaining loyalists and dolts are people whose lives are already utilizing the socialized fabric that has been insidiously stealing our present and future worth and will only get worse with each new printing of the currency.

America is failing under 30-40 years of poorly conceived socializing and the final nails of the coffin are being forged by the fed and delivered by the Democrats to insure our regression into a satellite of European stagnation.

They couldn't beat us as Americans but they sure will as an oppressed mass of entitlement seeking pawns of the state.

    36. PJ, Ohio says:

I was reading last night that Obama is heavily supported by the Communist Party of North America. They stated that his platform was very much in line with their beliefs and that all North American Communists should back him and rally his efforts to have legislation passed on health care reform.

That's enough for me to vote him and fellow supporting Democrats (and Republicans) out of office. What do you think?
