In the Green Room: President José Maria Aznar on the ‘Atlantic Link’

President Obama speaks glowingly of ‘inextricable links’ between the world’s countries, forgetting sometimes, however, which links are truly inextricable: America’s alliance with Europe. Commenting last week on this alliance during a visit to Heritage, former Spanish President José Maria Aznar said:
It’s necessary in my view to bring forth this Atlantic Alliance, this Atlantic link, and to avoid confusion between the allies in the future.
The confusion Mr. Aznar refers to is in particular the result of the Obama administration’s weak stances on Iran and Venezuela. Moreover, Obama’s recent shameful decision to abandon plans for basing elements of the U.S. missile defense shield in Poland and the Czech Republic only worsens the Allies’ confusion of where America stands when it comes to standing up for freedom and democracy around the world. The ‘Atlantic link’ Mr. Aznar has long defended and refers to above, must be actively protected and enhanced, not propped up by hollow catchphrases.

Can Senor Aznar be serious?
This concern, from the Spanairds, who quickly bailed out of Iraq, when they suffered devastating train bombings at home? That’s a great way to fight terrorism.
I’m sorry but there is a credability issue here.

I appreciate the opinion of President Aznar.
Garritt, how did this interview come about? Did he find Heritage? Or did Heritage find him? Why isn’t the current president expressing anything?…just curious.

To Freedom of Speech, Texas:
There should be no credibility issue for Mr. Aznar. The government he lead supported the United States with a troop deployment to Iraq. The withdrawal of those troops took place not under Aznar’s watch, but under the current Socialist Party government that defeated Aznar in the election that was held shortly after the Madrid bombings.
To Heritage:
A comment on terminology: it seems more correct to refer to Mr. Aznar as “prime minister” rather than “president.” While the office in Spain is called “Presidente del Gobierno,” in English usage, “president” usually denotes the head of state, which Mr. Aznar was not; he was head of government (i.e. the equivalent of a prime minister).

Ex-President Aznar while in office was strong ally of the U.S.A. and strong supporter of freedom around the world. He did support president Bush in Irak by sending troops and Spain suffer losses. He lost the elections to curent “Left Wing Socialist” President Zapatero (weak), which pulled their troops from Irak after the Extremist Islam terroist bombed the trains in Madrid causing many civilian deaths. Zapatero was going to pull the Spanish troops regardless from Irak because he is your typical socialist softy.

What else would you expect from a community agitator. He has elevated himself to a world agitator. He learned this tactic from Saul Alinsky’s Rule For Radicals. Mao-Bama is simply bringing about marxism out of chaos. If he succeeds Communism will be the end result.
How’s that hope and change working out for you?
