  • "Obama Bounce" Not Enough To Capture Olympics

President Obama and Mrs. Obama have done it again — demonstrating, that is, that personal appeal only goes only so far when it comes to public diplomacy and international relations.

The couple just about blew the Danish media away with their emotional and personal appeals for the 2016 Olympics to come to Chicago. “Top Grades for Obama” read the headline in the daily paper Berlingske Tidende, whose reporter had interviewed a communication expert who commended the duo for a synchronized performance of extraordinary elegance and eloquence.”They get a 10 on a scale of 1-10,” he said. President Obama spoke about his commitment as both president of the United States, and a sports fan. And Mrs.Obama brought up the case of her father, afflicted with multiple sclerosis, for whom sports remain a passion.

And yet, again, the appealing presidential couple achieved absolutely nothing. Chicago was eliminated in the very first round of voting, and the two cities remaining in the final round of selection were Rio and Madrid — of which Rio came away the winner. This should not exactly come as a surprise, given that the 2012 Olympics will be in London — after which the judges would likely look for a non-English-speaking location. Yet, it is surely an indication of the president’s confidence in his own personal appeal — and misplaced sense of priorities — that he made the trip in the midst of the health care battle and the critical impasse for U.S. strategy towards Afghanistan.

That the Obama appeal remains extraordinary is beyond doubt, even to the point of erasing any resentment over the enormous inconvenience the lightning short visit caused not just the population of Copenhagen, but also southern Sweden as well. Traffic closed down in Copenhagen, and over the bridge which connects Denmark to Sweden was as well.

Indeed the difference between the coverage of the visit to Denmark of President Obama and that of his predecessor President George W. Bush could hardly be greater. Mr. Bush, who actually spent his birthday there in 2005, and celebrated at a lunch with Queen Margrethe at her summer palace, was roundly denounced for the fact that highways had to be shut down for for his visit.

A pattern has by now established itself in President Obama’s record on public diplomacy, which is to say, an over reliance on the presidential image and appeal — and a failure to engage in diplomatic groundwork abroad or much needed interagency reform at home. The result is one humiliating snub after another — which seemingly go blissfully unnoticed by the White House.

Perhaps this will teach the OBAMAS a valuable lesson. They are NOT GOD's Gift To The World!! Eloquent speeches, backed and supported by nothing, achieve NOTHING!! Can you imagine the audacity, the arrogance, the egotism that fuels these two individuals? I wonder if Michelle Obama is a proud person today? Are either of the OBAMAS "Happy, Contented People"? I serious doubt it; and neither are the majority of Americans these days. The economy is tanking, people are losing their jobs, their homes, their possessions, and the future looks rather bleak economically speaking. The war in Afghanistan should be a high priority on Our POTUS's list.

BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA is NOT President of the World, in fact, he's detested, and despised in the majority of Countries he has travelled to. OBAMA's popularity is fading fast here in the United States. We have more important, more pressing issues than the Olympic Games in 2016. In fact, 'IF' Our Country does not begin to correct some of it's many serious problems, America, as we know it, may just cease to exist. Then who will be interested in International Sports Games at the Olympics. OBAMA, do the job you were elected to do, and quit disappointing each and every American you are suppose to protect, and represent; or in the alternative, resign your Office, and your "Title" of POTUS.

After observing this madness for 9 months, will someone blog and tell me what the appeal is? um, um, um.

Obama is actually that stupid that he would fly all the way over there without knowing the outcome? OUR representatives need to replace that dummy with Joe Biden. Obama is very dangerous, where was his people? How could they let him go over there without the deal being done?

Chicago was eliminated in the very first round of voting. This is funny. And Obama spent millions of OUR dollars to get embarrassed.

I think the Oly commission knew that if they were to give Obama what he wanted. In four years can you imagine how many world leaders would be there all wanting the games in their own town.

    5. Henry Zdonek says:

President Obama's constant apologies about the United States is coming back to bite him. The nations do not respect a leader who continues to demean his own country. The media and press overseas will not flatter him as the lap dog press in the USA does.

I hope this administration's actions wake us up to call for Constitutional Amendments limiting the terms of office for the members in the House and Senate as well as the nauseating perks they vote for themselves.

    6. Bobbie Jay says:

      So sad, you're royal arrogance…

    8. Lesley, Kitty Hawk, says:

what a beautifully maneuvered article, which invites you to think Obama could possibly be responsible for the IOC's decision or that it could possibly come from the Obamas'failure to rightly appeal. Of course, this very biased point of view fails to mention that maybe the IOC made its decision based on:

1- previous allegations of corruption during the Salt Lake City and Atlanta Olympics

2- Chicago’s reputation as a highly corrupt city

3- According to IOC president Jacques Rogue, "the IOC would definitely would love to see the continents that have not yet organized the Games like Africa or Latin America do that in the future."

It is time for the Heritage foundation to learn how to do research in order to argument a point of view a little better.

      To Leslie, Kitty Hawk NC,

Good points, seriously, especially since the Obamas and Opra "sacrificed" so much effort and time.

It is the gall of these people. This is no "camelot". These are two lawyers in the White House and they know exactly what they are doing or "attempting" to accomplish.

I'm glad South America was given the opportunity. It is only fair.
