  • Amnesty and Unemployment

The Obama Administration just cannot make the New York Times editorial board happy when it comes to immigration policy. First, the Obama Administration ends the practice of detention and removal of illegal immigrants caught during work site raids. Then, the Obama Administration decides not only shouldn’t they detain and remove illegal immigrant caught during work site raids, but they should give them temporary work permits so that those illegal immigrants will cooperate with prosecutors.

Now, the Obama Administration merely lets the employer target know it is coming to do a payroll audit, which results in the employer terminating the illegal immigrants it had been employing. The result is that the illegal immigrants merely find new jobs in the same location or move to another city to find work, which only continues to undermine the job market for citizens during one of America’s worst economic job markets. According to the New York Times, such a result is “ludicrous.” The only thing ludicrous about the example cited in the New York Times editorial is the callous disregard the editorial board has for citizens.

Specifically, the New York Times cites the case of American Apparel, which is a clothing company in Los Angeles, California. As noted by the editorial, upon receiving word of the payroll audit, American Apparel let go roughly 1,800 illegal immigrants. As further noted by the editorial, American Apparel paid the illegal immigrants from $10 to $12 per hour — “well above the minimum wage and industry standards, plus health benefits.”

According to the Census Bureau, the unemployment rate in Los Angeles County as of August 2009 stood at 12.4%. I assume that America Apparel will look to fill those 1,800 jobs that had been held by illegal immigrants. At a time of such high unemployment, many citizens will be eager to get a job that pays so well and comes with health benefits. What is ludicrous about that outcome? The New York Times editorial board should be forced to face the 1,800 citizens who end up in those jobs and tell them why it is unfair that the illegal immigrants were fired from those jobs.

It is high time the New York Times editorial board got itself out of the Upper West Side of Manhattan and spent a little bit of time among the Americans who are fighting to keep their heads above water. Maybe then their sympathy will directed in the right direction.

Thanks for sharing this! Ive read the estimate of illegal immigrants working in the US is 11 million & approx 15 million legal American citizens are out of work. Not only that 125,000 foreign workers is being imported every month while how many American citizens are losing jobs each month, its time for a freeze on importing foreign workers during these times or does legal American citizens even count? I say yes they count.

    2. Bill San Antonio TX says:

Might as well give them amnesty now. It has always been part of the leftest agenda and is going to happen anyway.

In 10 years we can do it all over again, or we can just hand citizenship papers out as they cross the border.

I wonder what this does for future "cost estimates" for our vaunted new Health Care Program?

This is why the illegal alien issue was not tackled before health care. All the pieces of the "re-invention" of America and eventually our Constitution make perfect sense. They are all part of a grand plan.

Our illustrious "leaders" in DC are counting on Americans not noticing until its too late.

They will tell you its not true but how "transparent" has Congress and the White House been so far?

Heritage: Thank you for the research, expert commentary and forum.

I confront Congress with personal emails and receive self serving form letters in response! Nothing gets through to them.

Is Heritage able to compile our responses for meaningful action?

    5. AmericanPatriot, USA says:

Truly, the inmates are running the asylum — and what does this say about us, as voters who put such idiots in office?? If we do not vote against EVERY incumbent currently in office — we are ALL morons, regardless of our political leanings. Fire them ALL in coming elections!

    6. Roxi, Tucson, AZ says:

The NY Times editorial board may very well have a callous disregard for American citizens but what about the callous disregard for American citizens that American Apparel had by hiring illegal aliens in the first place. Personally, I think illegals should be deported However, they wouldn't be taking American jobs if American businesses wouldn't hire them! Business should be verifying immigration status before hiring. If they don't they are breaking the law and encouraging illegal immigration. As far as I'm concerned, American businesses that hire illegals are traitors to their country and should lose their business license.

    7. Delaware Bob, Smyrna says:

Yes, obama just don't get it. He doesn't understand how illegal aliens are destroying tis Country.

Illegal aliens have made America the dumping ground for all their illegal alien children, then we have to school them and give them free medical care.

I for one, am sick and tired of these ILLEGAL ALIENS snubbing their nose at our immigration laws and the many other laws of this Country. If our Federal Government can not ENFORCE our immigration laws, and get these ILLEGAL ALIENS out of this Country, then let the States do it! One way or another, an end has to come to this illegal immigration, and not with AMNESTY! Amnesty will only encourage more ILLEGAL ALIENS to invade our Country and reward those who broke our laws and raped the American taxpayer in many ways…depressing our wages, taking our jobs, overwhelming our schools with their ILLEGAL ALIEN children, driving without a license or car insurance, all the crime from stolen identities to rape, drugs and everything else.

It's time for ZERO TOLERENCE with these ILLEGAL ALIENS. It's time for them get out of this Country and back in their own Country where they belong. When we get rid of the ILLEGAL ALIENS, we will get rid of all the problems that go with them. THAT IS A FACT!

I,for one will not be intimidated by the media, open borders politicians/groups, left leaning foundations,or theU.S. chamber of commerce. We as americans of all races, creeds, and colors can beat this conspiracy if we do not give up.The aforementioned groups are counting on citizens and legal residents rolling over and accepting this.I propose that those of us that can, march on Washington and let them know that we will not accept this assault on our country. Those of you that can't attend a march rally friends and family to support your country!!! Do not allow them to intimidate you with charges of racism.I am a black man who served this nation honorably in the military and whose half black/ half hispanic son continues to serve this nation honorably.Only we can give this great nation away.I've asked many illegal aliens "Why don't you fight for your country instead of illegally entering another nation and demanding rights that you know that you are not entitled to? Answer: "It's easier".We must show them that it's not"easier".

    9. Bobby long beach says:

It's incredible, totally and utterly incredible, how much the Senate and Congress abuses the American citizenry. Even foreign nationals illegally in the nation, are counted more and valued more than the American citizenry. I've never seen anything like it in 50 years. In California, almost all concerns are focused on the welfare and wellbeing of illegal aliens, mainly from Mexico, while seniors on small fixed incomes can barely pay for their house taxes. Again, it's mindboggling.

Our Government, past & present, Republican & Democrat, have allowed the invasion of 20 to 30 million criminals and uneducated peons which is the largest invasion of any Nation, at any time, by any means & in direct violation of Article IV, Section IV of our Constitution.

This refusal to abide by our Constitution or enforce our Immigration Laws should be classified as Treason of the most foul kind, & as grounds for impeachment & trials for Treason!

Not only have they allowed the invasion, they force American tax payers to pay Billions on Billions of dollars to provide Welfare, Prison cells, Educate the invaders numerous children, and free medical care, at the same time the invading horde break numerous laws and massive document fraud, & are destroying our schools, hospitals, communities, culture and standard of living while Robbing, Raping, Killing & Assaulting American Citizens WAKE UP PEOPLE!

    12. Estoban - Phoenix, A says:

We are a consensual society under a Constitution that provides rights, freedoms and the mechanics to create laws that we citizens live by. Citizens accept that breaking our laws results in proscribed punishments. An unholy alliance of lawbreaking illegal aliens, criminal employers and elected officials that look the other way are hypocrites and anarchists. They feel that they can pick and choose which laws are convenient for them to follow and willingly break those that are personally inconvenient. This breaks down our legal system and works against the rule of law that we depend upon for our daily safety and national security. All lawbreaking illegal aliens should be deported, all criminal employers should be jailed and elected officials that have failed to carry out their oath of office to defend the Constitution and our laws should be fired, voted out of office, impeached and perhaps charged with criminal dereliction of duty. The 1986 amnesty was a total failure. Never again!

    13. Bill San Antonio TX says:

      Dear Estoban Phoenix,

      Well said and true.

Americans have NO problem with legal immigration. Anyone that says otherwise is a fool and has not read any meaningful history.

This is a serious "security" as well as economic issue. God only knows who is going to eventually slip in.

Meanwhile this is just a political numbers game for many of our politicians disguised as "caring and compassionate" for the "disenfranchised". That is so much horse manure.

Loosely translated, the demos would love to gain 18-60 million projected demo votes in one fell swoop, to further their Marxist dream of a "re-invented" America. They will claim they are following the "rule of law" as they always do, while they are USING the "rule of law" to destroy what the "rule of law" is supposed to protect – our freedoms and Constitution.

THEY are the dangerous radicals. It is not WE know and see what their goal REALLY is.

      Again, good comments my friend.

    14. Steve, OH. says:

"Comprehensive immigration reform" a/k/a mass amnesty, is NOT a forgone conclusion. Not if we speak up again and make our voices heard like we the people did in the summer of 2007. Get active NOW, talk to your neighbors, friends, relatives and urge them to get involved too. Join NumbersUSA, call and write your Reps, visit your Reps' offices etc. JUST DO SOMETHING!

The 1986 IRCA amnesty was supposed to be a one-time event, or so Charles Schumer et al. promised us back then. Let's hold them to their words!

    15. MadMommy, Los Angele says:

For every illegal immigrant holding a job in this company, there's a US citizen who needs a job to feed their family and pay their mortgage. Why should an illegal immigrant be more important than an American citizen? What happened to the rule of LAW?

Illegal immigrants are NOT permitted to work here! Illegal immigrants have no stake in this country. They export millions of American dollars to Mexico TAX FREE. These are US dollars that will never be spent in this economy, tax dollars that will never be added to the funds needed for the social programs they sign up to receive when they have their anchor babies.

The employment of illegal immigrants must be prosecuted or the incentive to hire them will continue to perpetuate this problem…JUST SEND THEM HOME.

      Deportation by attrition.

    17. Fred says:

There is no point in commenting on the issue of illegal immigration. The American people have no say so anyway. Illegal immigrants will most likely be granted amnesty next year including the thousands that have criminal records.

Legal immigration which is now at a level of 1.2 million a year will suffocate this nation as it continue to increase each year. Just wait until we add another hundred million people in the next thirty years. You think the roads and schools are crowded now. Just wait until there is inadequate drinking water, food shortages, overcrowded urban areas, and a breakdown in society in general. This nation will look like India with wall to wall people.

For those of you that have no problems with the high level of legal immigrants, remember this, that each year more than 150,000 of them are old people who will receive social security pensions without ever having paid a dime into Social Security. The current cost is more than 15 billion dollars a year and rising. Also, they qualify for medical care at your expense thru medicaid, housing assistance, food stamps, and other benefits as well. Total cost is more than 40 billion dollars a year and rising.

This issue has been debated for years and the people in Washington do not care what you think. You have not lined their pocket with enough money to have anything to say.

America had its day in the sun, next stop is a society along the lines of a third world country. Get use to it. It has already started. There are 40 million people in Ameria living at the poverty level. Are you next?

    18. Bill San Antonio TX says:

      Dear Fred,

While I understand completely your points, I am not ready to "get used to it".

The reason this entire mess exists is because Americans have not been active in demanding change. While the left organized everyone else did not nothing. That is starting to change. As more and more Americans get involved, there is still time to reverse this leftist assault.

Most Americans would not relate to the positions of the uber-left, who control the democratic party and, for a time, our government. Maybe this is the wake-up call everyone needed? Or, as you point out, maybe it is too late.

Well, I won't give up. When the majority of Americans (Democratic, Republican, and Independent) see what this administration has done over the next couple of years, I believe the leftist can be dealt an unsustainable blow. They key is for the center/moderate democrats to take their party back.

No, you can get used to it. Not I.

      Commenting is a privilege, not a right,etc.

Yeah, that's the same malarky that the beurocrats in California, where I live, preach about driving and drivers licenses. It's a privilege not a right. Yet, yet, these same worthless to the core, beurocrats allow millions of illegal aliens to drive, without a license and when they are caught, which is almost never, since the police just let most of them go.(you see driving is a priviledge)

Just a little comment on what happens in a nation when you allow massive, unrelenting, illegality and abuse of the citizenry, who become second class.
