  • Morning Bell: Surrender and Betrayal Do Not Make Us Safer

Last month we reported that news outlets in Poland were saying that the Obama administration had made the decision to abandon our anti-missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic. Today Czech Premier Jan Fischer confirmed those reports telling reporters that President Obama phoned him overnight to say that “his government is pulling out of plans to build a missile defense radar on Czech territory.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Obama administration is justifying its decision on their determination that Iran’s long-range missile program hasn’t progressed as rapidly as previously estimated. This despite the facts that:

    • On February 2nd, Iran successfully launched a satellite into orbit using a rocket with technology similar to that used in a long-range ballistic missile.
    • On May 20th, Iran test-fired a 1200-mile solid-fueled two-stage ballistic missile.
    • On July 15th, Germany’s foreign intelligence service, BND, announced that Iran will be able to produce and test a nuclear weapon within six months. BND also stated that it has “no doubt” that Iran’s missile program is aimed solely at the production of nuclear warheads.
    • On August 3rd, The Times of London reported that Western intelligence sources concluded that Iran has not only perfected the technology to build and detonate a nuclear weapon, could assemble a weapon in just six months, and could deliver the weapon on Iran’s Shebab-3 ballistic missile.
    • Just yesterday French President Nicolas Sarkozy said: “It is a certainty to all of our secret services. Iran is working today on a nuclear [weapons] program.”

The only country other than Iran that is happy with President Obama’s decision is Russia. State Duma foreign affairs committee head Konstantin Kosachev told the Associated Press: “The U.S. president’s decision is a well-thought (out) and systematic one. Now we can talk about restoration of (the) strategic partnership between Russia and the United States.” But, in fact, the missile defense capitulation is just one in a long line of Obama surrenders to Russia. Heritage fellow Ariel Cohen explains from Moscow:

All these concessions the Russians pocketed, smiled, and moved on to new demands: European security reconfiguration; additional global reserve currency which would weaken the dollar; and a strong push-back on sanctions against the Iranian nuclear program. …. While the Russians clearly like the better atmospherics, and somewhat toned down the shrill anti-American rhetoric, the Iranians and the Venezuelans, who also received Obama’s “stretched hand” and, in case of Hugo Chavez, a pat on the back, are refusing to play ball. They, like their friends in Moscow, are also pocketing concessions while continuing the mischief.

The decision to abandon the “third site” deployment of 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic violates President Obama’s pledge to support missile defense that is “pragmatic and cost-effective.” Ground based missile defense is effective, affordable, and available now. According to the Congressional Budget Office, alternatives to the third site do not provide a comparable level of defense. The CBO concluded that the estimated $9-14 billion 20-year cost of the third site was half of the estimated costs of a sea-based alternative. Abandoning our best missile defense option in Europe only encourages Iran to speed up their ballistic missile program so that they can get their threat in place before a European missile defense system is available.

The Poles and the Czechs know what it means to live under the boot of Russian domination. The third-site issue is of huge symbolic importance to both nations, and if Moscow emerges the victor, with an effective veto over U.S. policy in Europe, it would represent a massive surrender of American strategic influence and a betrayal of two of its closest friends in the region.

Go to 33minutes.com for more on missile defense, the threat posed to us and our allies by nuclear weapons, and the action plan necessary to revive a strategic missile defense system that only America can develop, maintain, and employ for its own defense and the peace-loving world’s security.

    Quick Hits:

    • Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) joined the anti-czar criticism of the Obama administration yesterday, sending a letter to the White House asking Obama to detail the roles and responsibilities of all of the czars in his administration and to explain why he believes the use of czars is consistent with the Senate’s constitutional power to offer advice and consent on top-level executive branch officials.
    • Celebrate Constitution Day by reading former-Attorney General Ed Meese’s The Meaning Of The Constitution essay.
    • Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said Sen. Max Baucus’ (D-MT) health care won’t work for Nevada, explaining: “During this time of economic crisis, our state cannot afford to shoulder the second highest increase in Medicaid funding.”
    • According to Gallup, 56% of Americans do not believe President Obama’s claims that he can fund his health care plan through cost savings in Medicare and other parts of the existing health care system.
    • The Senate voted 52-45 yesterday to preserve millions of dollars in federal funding for road signs promoting President Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package.

    1. Jonathan Seid, Willi says:

It's the money, honey. Watch as this administration cuts defense to pay for it's social plans. It's what it has always been with progressives, take, take and take more. Ask any liberal how much is enough and they shrug and will take more.

What a sorry batch of leaders citizens have sent to D C.

    2. Don, Michigan says:

Everytime I read what this anti american president is doing, I get a sinking feeling. Everyone should watch the Obama Deception.

    3. Paul Evans, Newport says:

I love all the domestic terrorist arrests reguardless of what party is in office. That being said, what is going on with our foreign threats?

We have severely cut our missile defenses in a time when evil seems to have NO problem launching rockets. Is it just "smoke and mirrors" or do we really have serious troubles brewing?

I hope Obama knows that health care is only possible if people are alive to enjoy it.

    4. Marcel, Maine says:

Just reveals more of Obama's conviction that the US is the source of all the world's problems. He is an abysmal failure.

    5. Bob L., San Diego says:

I'm sorry, I must not understand the role of the Federal Government…. I thought it was National Security? Not anymore I guess…. Maybe we need to re-think the role of the Federal Government.

    6. Stop Complaining, IL says:

"Surrender and Betrayal Do Not Make Us Safer?"

Who are we surrendering to? Who have we betrayed? How does putting a missile system in Europe going to make us safe?

"Everytime I read what this anti american president is doing, I get a sinking feeling. Everyone should watch the Obama Deception."

      anti american president?

How many presidents been called anti-american? Because a person does not follow your view of America they are anti-american?

Now I understand what Jimmy Carter was saying…

    7. Louie Smith says:

      Does Israel have any F-117's?

    8. Steve, Michigan says:

Everyone should take time to read the second volume of Manchester's masterful biography of Winston Churchill, The Last Lion – Alone 1932-1940. Maybe we are not there yet, but the question beginning to percolate in my mind right now is: Who is the next Churchill? We need him or her!

The way this administration is going we need to find some real leaders who are willing to both save our Constitution by preserving limited government and, at the same time, save our people from external enemies. They will be critical in the next several years.

      Churchill had memorized Macaulay:

      "Then out spake brave Horatius,

      The Captain of the Gate:

'To every man upon this earth

      Death cometh soon or late.

And how can man die better

      Than facing fearful odds,

For the ashes of his fathers,

And the temples of his gods?'"

    9. SheriS in Williamsbu says:

I am shocked that this would come as a surprise to anyone. Since this white house is reversing almost everything President Bush established to keep us safe from TERRORISTS, I'm sure there will be much more reversed!

    10. Bonnie ... Ca. says:

It amazes me that liberals in our government claim their health care plan is a compassionate gesture to help those who cannot afford health care. What about the vast majority of us who will be adversely affected by their intrusion. Don't tell me that is compassion … it is stupidity. And, if they think their plan is so great for everyone … why has Congress made sure THEY don't have to subject themselves to it? Why does Obama and the "machine" behind him have to continually make speeches to sell it the public? Why are parts of the Bill changed only when public disapproval reaches a point it cannot b ignored?

It is nothing more than a gigantic expansion of federal government … and a violation of our Constitution. Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Soros and all their extreme liberal friends need to be replaced with Conservatives if this nation is to survive and thrive.

Their handling of the Stimulus Bill, foreign affairs, and now this health care fiasco proves they haven't the ability to lead this nation wisely.

    11. Tom Iowa says:

I said it before he was elected, and I will say it again. How do you destroy a strong nation like the U.S.? From with-in.. You tear down its work force and remove the guns from the people ( wait for it, it's hidden in the health bill. ) and you lower its defences. Then BOOM. before you know it you are speaking a language you don't understand……

    12. Deanne Despain...Dec says:

Thank you Heritage for the news. We get so little elseware. I do not want one dime spent anymore if it has not been fully investigated, audited, etc. to prove it is even going where they say it is. I don't trust Washington any more. It is my money. I do not want road signs, 85,000 dolloar toilet seats, or any other bull coning program. Let's drive them crazy until they account for every penny—-ACORN perfect example.

    13. Christopher Popham S says:

Of course we all know that in one of his most famous speeches during the 2nd WW, Sir Winston

said: "Never, never never give up". At this critical time in American history, we should perhaps heed those words. The rally/march in our

Capitol last Saturday marks the beginning of the

21st Century American Revolution. A million plus

citizens gathering to protest inept government

spending of our tax payer dollars; this was

unprecedented in our life time and yet the WH, media and silly pundits either ignored it or did not report it. Well, my fellow Americans, the

sleeping giant has been awakened; the silent majority is better informed and resolved to be heard and our voices will be heard around the nation and the world, for indeed, we are saying:

"Enough is enough" and "We're mad as hell and we are not going to take it anymore".

    14. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

This does not come as a suprise, obama is sending this country down the tubes. Every move that the dems, pelosi, reid and obama make is one to weaken this country and promote a socialized or worse government. They know we will not allow a front door approach to the change they want, so they will go through the back door to destroy this country. The future of this country depends on the voters, we must vote these people out in 2010.

    15. Mary Lee, Iowa says:

Can you provide really quick follow-up to this story? Fox news is saying that this is just a replacement of a not yet implemented plan by Bush. I'm inclined to believe the general opinion that Obama is just cutting the price tag, but I don't think we readers have enough of the story yet. Any more information that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

    16. Stop Complaining, IL says:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the revamped missile defense system will "enhance our ability to respond to the most immediate threats," and he criticized reports that the administration is "scrapping" the idea of missile defense in Europe, saying the new plan is designed to string radar sensors and interceptor missiles across the continent.

    17. Ron, Derry NH says:

I measure a man not by the size of his ego nor the posturing of his salesmanship but as to how diametrically opposed to his actions that his self made image is. If his image of himself matches his actions he is a truthful man; If his image and actions are in conflict, then he can not be trusted as he can't be honest with himself.

Many people boast, some speak with high hopes and vision and many just outright lie.

I consider treachery as the time one speaks one way and delivers the opposite with his/her actions.

Obama fits the description well and my references as to what treacherous is too, no wonder our Allies feel betrayed and our opposition is filled with triumph.

I have to ask, if it was so wrong for Bush to have lied and to have raised the debt, why is it so right for Obama to do more of the same?

I believe the Obama administration has a broader view. Once the economy is destroyed, the banking, mobility, education, health, and census is under the control of the government and weakened/destroyed, then a world order can be pursued.

    20. jim toledo says:

I can remember a time ago, in the late 70's, when we were ridiculed around the world, we had hostages in Beriut, gas prices we climbing to about $1.50 per gallon and we had shortages and long lines waiting for what liitle gas we could get. Inflation was through the roof and One of the solutions was to lower the speed limit, I don't think it really helped us to get more gas. Anyway, the point is what we had then is starting to look like what we have now. I know there aren't any gas lines yet, but, our unemployment rate is almost 10%, our budget deficet is about 2 trillion dollars more today then back then I'm not too sure if we had enough road signs. Maybe we did because the speed limit changed to 60mph, so, I'm not too sure if it was the signs that got us out of the mess? Anyway I thought the guy that came into the presidency in the early 80's may have got things going by cutting taxes and if I remember correctly, he made have had a big part in releasing the hostages and causing the cold war to be over. I just don't remember him saying please and thank you everytime he decided to do something to make America safer or more prosperous or even stronger on the world stage.

    21. LeRoy Reed says:

Obama is bound and determined to ruin this country!!! He will do WHAT ever so SLOWLY SO PEOPLE WON'T REALIZE WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THEM, AND THEN IT WILL BE A WAY OF LIFE!!! GET HIM OUT BEFORE IT TOOOOO LATE!!!!!

    22. Ben C, Ann Arbor says:

On the home front I understand Obama and the D.O.J. have asked for an extension of the Bush survellance programs for suspected terrorists. If this is true it is not a suprize to me that it has been under-reported. In the slang of today "OMG, could Bush have done something right?"

    23. Nancy/Mississipppi says:

How foolish are we, the American people, who have lived in this Nation with a love for God and Country? Everything is being ripped away by this deception and power-hungry administration, led by Obama. Stand up and be counted, America. "We, the people", are too strong, with God's help alone, to allow these things to take place. To say that Glenn Beck has exploited the American people by gleaning from our fears is ridiculous. He is only expressing what we really feel about the socialism that is taking over our government and our nation. Stand up and fight for what we know and believe to be right and true!!!! NOW!!

This has nothing to do with racism. That's a distraction from the real issues. God help us.

    24. Vetecs says:

If we are going to do any accounting we need to account for the money that was spent in Iraq and Afghanistan. We need to account for the WMD (Weapons of mass destruction) We need to account for the Wall Street Bailouts of banks. We need to account for the Billions of dollars Madoff stole and people are in Financial ruins. We need to account for ourselves. Fear is if and when the right get back the white house? So America, keep in mind we are dealing with politicians left wing and right wing… Straight up liars and under their breath liars…. Regardless one sector of our country will be unhappy, I dealt with unhappiness for the past eight years…..

    25. Vetecs says:

America don't cry wolf…. It will not be Obama that destroy the country it will be yourselves… It will be in your belief that your President is out to ruin this nation, like the belief Bush had a hand in 9-11.

    26. Bill, Camano Island, says:

This right winger will reserve any possible criticism of the President's decision to cancel the European Missile Defense System until I have had the opportunity to carefully study the facts. However, I would imagine that the citizens of former Soviet Eastern Block Countries have good reason to be far more concerned with ambitions of Russia, as demonstrated in Georgia, than with Iran at the moment.

If we can believe what the President has said (GULP!), the alternate system he seems to be proposing may be an improvement. To me, that depends largely on whether or not the "alternative" is freely designed by our scientists and military personnel or by politicized bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.

I simply have one overriding question as to the wisdom of providing a missile shield for our friends in Europe. Why bother? They don't seem to be all that concerned with not having such a system in place. I haven't seen any of them clawing at our doors to pay for the program, which, by the way, should not go forward without such a commitment. Let's face it…the only thing worth defending in Europe is the U.S. Military stationed there for far, far too long. Europe has largely had a free ride on defense spending for more than 60 years. It's time for that to end.

Recognizing that it is impossible to defend against all possible attacks on United States soil, one has to ask… how we are coming along in providing a missile defense system for our homeland?

The more we weaken our military capability and the more we demonstrate a lack of resolve in defending America, the greater likelihood that we will be attacked again.

Our enemies have to be smiling.

    27. Robert , Mississippi says:

It sure looks like Obama is trying to take this country from the defender of freedom to just another socialist country in the community of nations.

He goes around making speeches to the unions yet never goes to any of our military bases to support our troops.

Our military leaders have called for an increase in troops in Afghanistan and he says he will think about it, yet passing health care is of a national urgency?

We need to carry this conservative momemtum forward and people (unfortunately like me)who have not voted in previous elections to make sure we go to ballet box and vote these folks out.

Before we get too caught up in what all the other intelligence services are saying, let's remember that these same agencies were telling us there were WMDs in Iraq. Let's also remember all the flack that "W" took for believeing what they told us.

Maybe it's time for the US to pull all of our military bases out of the rest of the world. We have enough ICBMs and to reach anywhere in the world. We have a satillite system that can detect ground launches anywhere around the world. How much does it cost US tax payers to provide for the defense of Western Europe, Southeast Asia, all of North America, Central America and even South America? Out of all the countries in the world we defend, how many really treat us like friends?

American position, by extension, Obama position is just a reflection of the contemporary global economic situation where the US can not be provider of common goods. Though this move is antithetical to the balance of power in Eastern Europe, it is a victory on the part of the Russian government and her cronies, Iran and Venezuella. The need to be a balancer by the US can not contiue without a responsibility in military, economic and political terms of which America can not afford at this period. Obama is a pragmatic politician and a stateman. America economy is sick and the Democratic government is a welfare one which would like to embark on the welfare of Americans rather than to satisfy the military-industrial complex.Staging missiles around the perceived sphere of influence of the Russians would bring about another military-political fiasco as Geogia experienced from Moscow.
