Obama Economy Has Made DC The Best City Look For A Job

TechCrunch reports today: The unemployment rate in the U.S. was still 9.4 percent in July, but some cities are better than others to look for a job. Of the top 50 metro areas, Washington, D.C., is the easiest for unemployed workers to find a job … The index ranks cities based on how many unemployed people there are compared to job listings. For every one unemployed person in Washington, D.C., for example, there are six job postings. Whereas in Detroit, there is only one job posting for every 18 unemployed … More

Rose D. Friedman, Quite a Teacher

Liberty lost one of its finest advocates this morning. Rose Director Friedman died of heart failure in Davis, Calif. She was thought to be 98. Rose was best known as the wife of Milton Friedman, the Nobel Prize-winning economist, who died in 2006. But Rose, an economist herself, was Milton’s intellectual partner. Together, they co-authored the international best-seller “Free to Choose” and other books. Together, they taught the world important lessons about economics and policy. Their life’s work improved the lives of millions around the world, and their lessons will … More

Only Real Reform Can Enable Integrated Health Systems

The Washington Post and New York Times both have front page stories out today on Sen. Kent Conrad’s (D-ND) co-op fall back  for President Barack Obama’s imperiled public plan. The NYT reports: “The history of health insurance in the United States is full of largely unsuccessful efforts to introduce new models of insurance that would lower costs. And the health insurance markets of many states suggest that any new entrant would face many difficulties in getting established.” WaPo reads: “There are at least two major health-care organizations that could serve … More

    Procuring Problems in Britain’s Defenses

A set of slides summing up an internal report from Britain’s Ministry of Defense on defense procurement have found their way to the BBC. The slides make for damning reading, and though the Ministry denies they are authentic, they accord with Britain’s experiences over the past decade. In a nutshell, the slides conclude that the Ministry “does not really know the price of any kit and project management does not exist in the Department.” The result is pervasive over-optimism about procurement, regular and costly reprofiling of major programs, and a … More

Fact Checking the White House on Health Care

Earlier this month the White House unveiled their “Health Insurance Reform Reality Check” video site to combat “disinformation” about Obamacare on the internets. The Heritage Foundation health care policy team has responded with their own “A Dose of Reality: Fact Checking the White House” page which features video responses to the Obama administration’s key health care claims. Here is Center for Data Analysis director Bill Beach explaining how Obamacare hurts small businesses:

    Barack Meets Mubarak

President Barack Obama meets Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at the White House today amid an upswing in bilateral relations caused by a mutual interest in containing Iran, defusing Israeli-Palestinian tensions, and reducing the destabilizing threat posed by Islamist extremist groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and al-Qaeda. Relations between Cairo and Washington had soured during the Bush Administration because of the Iraq war and the fact that Bush’s Freedom Agenda clashed with Mubarak’s restrictive approach to political freedom and lack of tolerance for political dissent. Although President Obama has backpedaled away … More

Morning Bell: A Clunker of a Stimulus

Yesterday was the six month anniversary of President Barack Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package. Since the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act” became law, the United States economy has shed nearly 2.8 million net jobs. When Obama signed the stimulus the nation’s unemployment rate stood at 7.6%. Today it is 9.4%. Nationwide, a total of fifteen states are now suffering from 10% unemployment. No wonder 57% of Americans recently told Gallup that the stimulus package is either having no impact on the economy or making it worse. The White House has … More

Cap and Trade Will Kill the Travel Industry

Proponents of climate change legislation argue that a cap and trade will stop the polar ice caps from melting. This is critical to island nations relying on tourism as the primary source of economic activity. After all, who’s going to visit an island if it’s completely submerged by water? According to some reports, the Maldive Islands “in the Indian Ocean is about three feet above sea level, and scientists fear it could be submerged by 2050.” This may or may not be an issue depending on what you read, but … More

    Partial Victory Over Chinese Censorship

Li Yizhong, China’s Minister of Industry and Information Technology, announced that companies will not be required to install the Green Dam Youth Escort web filter onto their computers sold in China. This is a retraction from the original policy declared earlier this year forcing companies to include the software, which was quickly discovered to block politically sensitive material as well as material inappropriate for children. Like all victories against the Great Firewall, this one was partial. The reversal occurred due to diverse, strong opposition to Green Dam software. Ron Kirk, … More

Townhall Downfall: Obamacare and the Enumerated Powers of Congress

Last Friday we outlined just some of the ways that Obamacare is inconsistent with our founding first principles. In this video from a St. Louis, Missouri, townhall hosted by Sen. Claire McCaskill’s (D-MO) office, a servicemen politely and cogently explains that “health care” does not appear anywhere among the enumerated powers granted to Congress in Article I section 8 of the U.S. Constitution:
