  • Morning Bell: Public Option Is Not Dead Yet

The headlines are encouraging: The AP reports, “White House appears ready to drop ‘public option’.” Politico reads, “White House backs away from public health care option.” And the front page of USA Today says, “Obama may drop public option in health care.” These headers all stem from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ comment on CNN Sunday Morning that the public option “is not the essential element” of President Barack Obama’s health care plan. But by Sunday night the White House was already walking back Sebelius’ statement.

An anonymous administration official told The Atlantic that Sebelius “misspoke” and White House health reform communications director Linda Douglass released a statement explaining: “Nothing has changed. The president has always said that what is essential is that health-insurance reform must lower costs, ensure that there are affordable options for all Americans and it must increase choice and competition in the health-insurance market. He believes the public option is the best way to achieve those goals.”

Obama’s allies on the left are equally emphatic about the non-death of the public option. Democracy for America head Howard Dean told the Washington Post, “I don’t think this bill is worth passing without a public option.” And Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas), a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, told CNN, “It would be very, very difficult [to pass Obama's plan] without the public option.” But Democrats in the Senate are singing a slightly different story. Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND) told Fox News Sunday that “there never have been” enough votes for a public option in the Senate, and that continuing to fight for it would be “just a wasted effort.”

But that does not mean that Americans fighting against government-run health care are out of the woods yet. Conrad insists that the Senate could pass health reform that includes health insurance co-operatives. Co-operatives do have a long and proud tradition in many sectors of the U.S. economy, but details matter. Conrad says these health co-ops will not be “government-run and government-controlled” but instead “membership-run and membership controlled.” But others in Conrad’s caucus have a starkly different co-op goal. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is pushing a vision of co-ops that are: 1) run by the government, preferably the federal government; 2) funded or subsidized by the government; or 3) includes plans chosen by the government.

If the language that comes out of the Senate looks anything like what Schumer is proposing, then there is no real difference between co-ops and the public plan. If, on the other hand, the Senate produces something that; 1) is not funded by the federal government 2) is not “government-run and government-controlled”; but instead 3) is “membership-run and membership controlled” then co-ops would be acceptable.

Of course, the public plan is just one of the more objectionable parts of Obama’s health care plan. The individual and employer mandates, the expansion and federalization of Medicaid, the creation of a new health czar, not to mention the trillion dollar cost of the new plan, are all still intact. If, as Sebelius insists, the White House wants health reform to increase “choice and competition” than there are a number of conservative alternatives in the House and Senate that do just that by pursuing health reform through a “patient-centered” approach. The White House’s rhetoric is rapidly moving away from an expert/government-centered approach to health care and towards a more market/consumer model. Let’s hope their actions start matching their words.

    1. ROBERT DAVIS says:

AMERICANS NO LONGER TRUST OBAMA NOR HIS ADMINISTRATION. HE HAS LIED TOO MUCH TOO OFTEN AND BECOME A DISGRACE TO THE OVAL OFFICE. HE WILL LEAD DEMOCRATS TO A DISASTER IN 2010 IF REPUBLICANS CAN GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER AND OFFER ALTERNATIVES FOR AMERICANS PROBLEMS. TAX CREDITS ARE A GOOD START. A NATIONAL MEDICAL ACADEMY WILL HELP WHERE POOR BUT BRILLIANT STUDENT GET FULBRIGHT GRANTS TO GO THROUGH MEDICAL SCHOOL AND THEN SERVE 6 YEARS WHERE NEEDED ACCORDING TO AMA. THEY WILL BE PAID GOOD SALARIES AND AFTER 6 YEARS CAN GO INTO PRIVATE PRACTICE. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF SUCH KIDS ACROSS AMERICA. INCREASE THE SUPPLY OF DOCTORS YOU DECREASE THE DEMAND AND LOWER COSTS. TH AT IS THE AMERICAN FREE ENTERPRISE SOLUTION.

    2. John says:

Why not just kick out of the Union the states north of Virginia and on the coast, and perhaps California?

This would solve almost all our problems for teh people in the rest of the states. Those people can't run their governments, and communists, One World Government people, and other criminals there have sway over the whole nation.

Imagine a United States of America that goes back to following it's Constitution, has religious freedom, doesn't murder babies, supports marriage and family, lives within it budget, and is debt-free.

    3. Grace, Florida says:

Let's be very careful here. I don't think they are going to drop a public option – just dress it different. Keep your eyes open. I think what we want is NO GOVERNMENT INTRUSION IN OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM.

    4. Bobby Almand Kenneda says:

The tax payers that cannot afford health care premiums, need to get out and show support to President Obama's plan.Make signs of support, start marches,Show signs of support by your actions!! Do Not sit by and watch, Stand UP, and say YES WE Can!! Back OUR President!! LET's Go!Stay legal, DO NO Damage, Just show support !!

    5. Harold, Texas says:

I think the best we can do is block Obama's bills while he is serving his first, and hopefully only term, and find somebody who believes in the USA's values and principles for the next presidential election and elect him/her. A day without Obama is a good day.-Harold

    6. Harold, Texas says:

P.S. We also need to vote out of office and national representative/congressmen/women who voted without really reading the bills they voted on. Our country does not need them representing us.

    7. Randy says:

Hey Conn. Just wanted to let you know how much I love the Morning Bell. It always gets me up to speed on the latest happenings.

    8. Joe, Rhode Island says:

O' donnell even looks like Olberman, angry, stupid and confused. Good job MSNBamaC!!!!

    9. Lloyd Scallan - New says:

Statements that the "public option" is in trouble is just another ploy by Obama and his lackeys to

disarm our efforts to stop his plan. Obama has

stood on the stages in Montana and Colorado, look the people in the eyes, and flatly LIED in these

completely set-up Obama lovefest. The really disturbing fact is many people in the country STILL do not understand how dangerous Obama is. This guy was hand picked by the socialist/Marxist movement to end our American way of life. Until people look pass his bright smile and elegant manner he reads the telepromters, this snake is still alive and will continue to have the ability to strike.

    10. mark, san francisco says:

Does anyone know of any systematic free market or Austrian analysis of the Obamacare legislation? Not free market perspectives on government or health care in general, but specifically of the 1000 page bill?

    11. Jeanine, Illinois says:

I have heard the term "incrementalist" used to describe our current "leader". We need to stop the entire bill – the entire massive wellfare program that it is. History shows us how our government deals with massive programs! I don't trust the people currently in power with the issues they should be dealing with, according to our Constitution, let alone all these issues that should be under our state, local or individual control. My garden is rotting on the vine while I have to spend my precious spare time trying to watch dog our elected officials! Get off the progressive bicycle and get back on the path to our Constitution and the Republic.

    12. Ben C, Ann Arbor says:

      BOBBY:

I HAVE WORKED SIX AND SEVEN DAYS A WEEK FOR FORTY YEARS TO PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY. AND NOW YOU WANT ME TO PROVIDE FOR YOUR FAMILY? I DON'T THINK SO.

    13. Doc Bob, Houston, Te says:

The public option has been a straw man all along, something they can give up now in exchange for creeping socialism that will overtake us while we sleep.

    14. Mary Hogan, Ohio says:

I hope Mr. Obama's continuous use of the word misspoke is beginning to teach American's that this is just a liars tactic.

    15. Don Lynch, Merrill, says:

Re: Jennifer Graham's item on Canadian health care; One would think since the Canadian Government set up the Canadian Health Care system, the Canadian Government should FIX it ! However, since "one" understands government thinking, "one" realizes there's no one to take care of it BUT the doctors.

    16. joan, connecticut says:

Senator Schumer is pushing this abominable plan, and it makes me wonder if he has a stake in the company or companies that will carry out the health care plan. He's not doing it ,because he cares for people, there has to be a deeper and more lucrative reason. As a former correction officer, I know scam artists, when I see and hear them! It's apparent that congress, is not run by our elected officials, most of them are puppets for the lobbyists who fund their campaigns. TERM LIMITS NOW!

    17. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

Watch out for politicians who use words to hide their true intentions.

      Progressive/Liberal = Socialist;

      Change = Destroy;

      Government-run Cooperatives = ObamaCare;

      Government expense = What the government doesn't take from you;

      Reform = Takeover;

      Government Investment = Control.

"Let me tell you the truth" = "I am going to lie to you".

"Make no mistake" = "I hope you'll believe my lies".

"The people want this" = "We're going to shove this down your throat".

The AMA endorses the Obama Plan = only 29% of Doctors belong to the AMA and NOT all of them are for ObamaCare!

A Government: of, by and for the people = (to politicians),a People of, by, and for the Government.

Public servant = Ruler of the public.

"Let me be perfectly clear"= "I'm going to blow smoke and try to confuse the hell out of you"!

      Political Class = Aristocracy.

      President Obama = Dictator/Chairman.

Obama's Czars = Politburo Russian style.

Beware of false prophets; wolves in sheep's clothing! Beware of forked-tongued politicians!

      Be cynical not gullible!

    18. KathyF, Arizona says:

Let's not forget the provisions in this bill that effectively enslave health care professionals – by mandate they become employees of the government in all but name. Physicians and other health care professionals will leave in droves because they won't be able to afford to pay back those student loans or the cost of malpractice insurance since there is no tort reform in these bills. Rationing will result, whether there's a public option or not. The bills currently on the floor are rotten to the core and will do nothing to improve health care or its cost.

This administration has no intention of giving up its pet plan to socialize this country. Obama has already proven that he says one thing and does another. He lies, plain and simple, as do all his henchmen and women–advisors, czars, cabinet, congressional leaders and the mainstream media they somehow own are all corrupt. None of them can be counted on to do the reasonable, responsible, sensible reform necessary to accomplish a common sense fix. Not without hyper-vigilance on the part of the American people. They can't be trusted to uphold the Constitution, so we must stay on top of this and not let our guard down for a moment!

    19. Ken St Louis says:

If Obuma and the socialists/democrats rally cared about AMERICA they would drop this whole idea of socialized medicine a begin to try and get spending under control and balance our budget! That fact that that's the last thing on their minds tells me all I need to know about these anti american socialists. Senator Claire McCasgill had the nerve to say: DON'T YOU TRUST ME TO THE AUDIENCE AT HEAR TOWN HALL MEETING THE OTHER DAY! Are these dolts out of touch are WHAT?

    20. Jerry S. Dickinson, says:

I would be willing to bet with Bobby from Kennedale Tx. that thecore of Obamas support for his "healthcare" are not "TAXPAYERS". That is a big part of the rub sir. We The People that pay taxes are fed up with another program for those in need. We are here for the needy, not the greedy. If redistriubution of wealth worked, ideally, the number of folks on welfare would shrink each year. Instead they grow like fat guy with free pie.We have healthcare, we do something really typical to get it. We work for it

    21. J. White, south Jers says:

Excuse me, but isn't this the United States of America? Since when did we suddenly get ourselves a king or even a would-be king- FDR was enough of that un-American inanity. If we re-establish privileged classes based on ancestry, then I am a prime candidate as I AM a direct descendant of the royalty of the Austro-Hungarian regimes. Big whoopee! Glad my folks came here.

All we hear, and his teleprompter voice is tiring on the ears, is "I" this and "I " that…."HIS" healthcare plan??? Pardon me for not drinking the Kool-aid, but, anything that does develop, and may it NOT, is by the American people and not "HIS", he is some arrogant uneducated-to-the-realities-of-working-for-a-living socialist!!

Socialists and liberals are cut from the same cloth. Childish, selfish, and unrealistic about humanity and its functionings over time. Time and again- socialism has failed miserably….it is NOT for the USA.

    22. Barry, Lexington ky says:

All they will do is take the wolf and dress it in sheep's clothing.

      Beware.

    23. Mary....... WI says:

I made the mistake believing public option was ddead when I went to bed last night…..I slept sooo good! This morning I woke up to the fact that indeed public option is NOT dead. Before retiring for the night I emailed our districts house rep some of my thoughts for reform….she is not having any town hall meetings (chicken?)but plans on a 5000 person conference call tonight and tomorrow night. How can anyone get to talk?!!! In any case in my email I urged Tort Reform, reducing requirements for participation in Medicaid, perhaps a mandate requiring insurance companies to except those with pre-existing,a catastrophic plan offered by the government solely because it is the high costs of cancer treatment and many surgical procedures that can bankrupt families, and lastly not to give health benefits to immigrants here ILLEGALLY….I believe the benefits illegals are receiving have put a huge dent in Social Security and has greatly contributed to the high premiums we are all experiencing with our health plans. Please don't misunderstand….I understand they are fleeing from poverty and bad situations in their countries but in the interim they are destroying the USA in many ways. There is a reason for waiting lists for folks to come here legally….the "attack" on benefits meant for the legal Americans that have paid into the system is clearly demonstrated.

I agree Mr Obama should only be a one term president. Unfortunately, this administration can do so much damage to this country before 2012. We must continue to fight for our constitutional rights in the meantime.

    24. Joan Sarasota FL. says:

I wouldn't trust Obama to take care of my dog. This is America we have a constitution, vote people into office who believe in it. The trouble is the majority of us haven't been watching the foxes stealing the goverment away from us. Now we are waking up and going to make some noise and changes they call us names. Treat us like dumb bells. These are the people who have no morals,no principles, who lie and cheat to get where they are. If we love our children and grandchildren we must sweep them out of office and make this country right again. Stop voting party lines investigate the canidates know what kind of person is behind that face that wants your vote so bad. ( Of course now we have Czars that have all kinds of power that we never even had a chance to give our opinion on) This is the kind of thing Russia does not true Americans.

    25. Ralph Reynolds, Grea says:

From my recollection when Pres Carter printed 300 million, as I recall, that about 12 to 14 months afterward the retail prices of consumer foodstuffs doubled within a few weeks; the price of a loaf of bread went from 80 cents to over a dollar fifty. In looking at other countries where their government printed money there seems to be the same inflationary event. Pres Obama printed 13.1 Billion and it has been sifting into the economy since last March. Were this inflationary event to be linear that would mean that we could experience a 4+ jump in consumer food costs (plus the same inflation in other areas)next June to July. Can anyone else relate to this possibility?

    26. Bob Veigel, Arlingto says:

They are compulsive liars and deceivers. Believe nothing they say. They wish to destroy America. Obama and his group are evil and haters of America.

    27. Diana. Florida says:

"Public Option" is the most manipulatively phrased communist idea I have heard. I bet they won't give us the option NOT to pay for these government funded programs which are ALL a huge black hole because all they do is suck the taxpayers' money.

The Private sector CAN NEVER compete with the GOVERNMENT because the government will always have MORE capital and millions of taxpayers that keep supplying it.

The reason that health care costs are so high is because Doctors no longer need to adjust their fees to the standard of living because they have hundreds of patients on Medicare and Medicaid, and since its the Government that pays, then the Doctors charge whatever they want and their paycheck is government guaranteed.

COMPETITION with the Government is ABSURD, you CAN'T compete with the trillionaire who actually makes the laws and enforces the laws. What competition is that???

    28. Paul, Arizona says:

Ronald Reagan warned in 1961 that American's would never vote for a socialist society but they would adopt socialist programs that look like they might benefit from them. All they need to do is pass the bill. Once it is law it will mutate just as social security and Medicare/Medicaid has.

The public option is not dead…it is hiding in the dark little crevices that no one is looking in. If the health care and climate bill pass, look for a step by step shift to more massive social programs because none of this is sustainable unless the government has direct control of the economy in its entirety.

    29. Suzanne Clark Flor says:

According to the WSJ this A.M. 12 August:

Chrysler and the Fed will be making the new Fiat in Toluca, Mexico. According to the article making the sub-compact Fiat 500 there will save jobs?

Congratulations to both the Fed and the UAW.

    30. Nelia, AZ says:

The mindset of those in congress being they think they know what is best for us, their constituents, they will try to blast through whatever healthcare program they can with hidden legalese to confuse and addle.

Although few items are spelled out, the frequent mention of committees to make certain determinations is. Who will head up those committees? Obama's appointed Czars? Beware, the devil IS in the details.

    31. Gary Tekely, Cal. says:

Gallup poll. 57% of Americans say Obama stimulus has not impacted economy, or its making it worse. That should be no surprise. In 2004 two UCLA economists said that Roosevelt's "ill-conceived stimulus policies" extented the depression by 7 years. Unemployment was 8.9 in 1930, 15.9 in 31, 23.6 in 32, 24.9 in 33, 21.7 in 34, 20.1 in 35, 17.0 in 36, 14.3 in 37, 19.0 in 38, 17.2 in 39 14.6 in 40 9.9 in 41, then 4.7 in 42. The new deal was a dismal failure. Obama adm. in making the same mistake. Need to lower everyones taxes now, that is the real stimulus.

    32. diane Washington, DC says:

Good. No option should be off the table at this early date.

    33. Dave, Laguna Niguel, says:

I continue to be dumbfounded by the APATHY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! It has been verified by the likes of John Conyers(idiot in Michigan with a bribe-taking wife) and others that the "politicians" do not have enough RESPECT for the people they serve, nor the POSITION they hold, to READ a bill which affects 300million people for the REST OF THEIR LIVES!!!! Are you kidding me?! Do you require more proof that ITS ALL ABOUT THEM?! These people need to be thrown out of office! What the heck are they there for, just to live the high-life off of us?! I am sick and tired of a president that SPINS the truth and democrats(politicians and their cohorts in the leftwing media)who outright LIE THROUGH THEIR TEETH to push through bills like Cap and Trade and Obamacare! They only care about CONTROL OF US ALL…not the destruction of the American economy, millions of people out of work making them dependent on the government. The democrats have always had ONE GOAL: make as many people as possible dependent on them through lies, spin, destroying American jobs and industry, rigging the mortgage business causing the destruction of real estate/banking, and preaching HATE and Racism..Have you ever heard so many charges of RACISM in your life recently?! Conservatives want government mostly OUT OF THEIR LIVES! LET OUR MARKETS GO!!(and GROW!). The ONLY role of our government: PROTECT OUR LANGUAGE, OUR BORDERS AND OUR CULTURE per Dr Savage! PROTECTION!!! NOT CONTROL!!We, the American people, have already bestowed upon everyone here EQUALLITY!!! Just exactly how much more do some people want?! By the way, where have all the rent-a-mob-war protesters gone? I know George Soros has not run out of money?

    34. Whicket Williams Kin says:

we need to get these people O-U-T- repeal what they have done, contain the damage, or it will cost 100 dollars to buy a loaf of bread on a 8 dollar an hour job. They set min wage, they expect everybody except themsevles to earn it, and no more!

    35. Jo says:

I am sorry – you STUPID people! This is one of the few countries in the world that does NOT take care of its citizens and does not offer health care. You talk about government intervention in health care as if this intervention were a disease! The truth is that this country's health care system is run by for-profit health insurance companies! Yes – read again FOR PROFIT. These companies turn sick people away, do not care for people, fight against people who need medical services – it is BRUTAL! Again, FOR PROFIT. What would Jesus think? More importantly, what would he do? This is disgusting. Government intervention is needed to stop this inhumane for-carnage, to set limits to the disgusting, anti-american, inhumane treatment of American citizens. Yes – I need the government to step in and set guidelines because this is twisted – just like I need the police to step in when a bank is being robbed. Wake up people! Don't be stupid! You know what it's like to continually fight with your insurance company, I know you do! This government intervention is to stop this carnage – to not permit someone from being dumped by their insurer and to get the medical attention they need without having to fight big FOR-PROFIT beurocrats. Wake up!

    36. Deanna, AZ says:

OBAMA . . . leader of an Obomination! This guy is a nothing more than a politician . . . nothing less than a snake oil salesman. Americans need to open their eyes before it's too late. The last statesman we had was Ronald Reagan. Sen. McCain has the heart of a statesman, but there were too many people that don't know the difference between a politico and statesman. It is extremely important to contact our Senators and Representive today. And we had better "wake up" and start getting some statesmen in line for the next election. This includes House and Senate in 2010 and then a real leader for 2012.

    37. Lynn B. DeSpain says:

I will always take a person with one lick of common sense over another with a wall full of degrees!

      Hozro

    38. Roy Reed, Las Vegas says:

Watch, the government will be coming in the back door!!!! They think no one is watching.!!Obama and his Socialist Dictators are nothing but crooks!! Don't trust any of them!!

    39. Mike Sheahen, Hickor says:

(Quoting) "If, on the other hand, the Senate produces something that; 1) is not funded by the federal government 2) is not “government-run and government-controlled”; but instead 3) is “membership-run and membership controlled” then co-ops would be acceptable."

Once again, that little morsel smacks of trying to play or stand out in the "middle of the road", when our parents tried to teach us, in more ways than one, not to try to play or stand out in the middle of the road because we'd get "run over", in more ways than one.

Of course such playing or standing out in the middle of the road is a fine thing to do, as in this case, if we want to get run over and have our freedoms and resources, our nation, and, yes, even our lives co-opted, bound, and destroyed by the tyranny of those who always have and always will seek to do so exactly as Thomas Jefferson said when he said such things as "Was the government to prescribe to us our medicine and diet, our bodies would be in such keeping as our souls are now (meaning wretched)", and "Experience has shown that even under the best forms (of government) those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny".

    40. Suzanne Clark Flor says:

We have been in crisis since January 20. Fighting against this Health issue may be our last stand as free citizens of this great nation. I just read Dr. Feulners plea regarding cancellation of a proven missile defense system. If protecting our country is not in our best interest then health care won't matter. As the widow of a career Naval officer we'd better think long & hard about our priorities. Demeaning our country and destroying our economy have finally awakened a frustrated and now angry giant. Pray

    41. Dave, Laguna Niguel, says:

Why is it the loudest voices come from the most ill-informed? Insurance companies DO NOT make loads of money off of HEALTH INSURANCE! They pay out as much as they take in! Their money is earned from life insurance and INVESTING PREMIUMS in the stock market, which has been RUINED BY THE DEMOCRATS BECAUSE THEY VILLANIZE AMERICAN COMPANIES!!! WHY? Because DEMOCRATS WANT ALL THE PROFIT!!!! They think EVERY DOLLAR EARNED BELONGS TO THEM AND THEY KNOW BEST(PER CLINTON!) HOW TO SPEND IT AND YOU DON'T!! How many times have you heard democrats scream about OBSCENE PROFITS? What about BIG OIL, BIG PHARMACEUTICAL, BIG COMPUTER, etc? AMERICAN COMPANIES! EMPLOYING AMERICAN PEOPLE! Not anymore!

    42. ella,n.c. says:

Obama has not done one good thing since he has been in office. He is not a good person to say america is not a christian nation. We are a christian nation. I did not vote for him nor will i ever accept him as the president of the united states.

    43. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

I am afraid this talk is just talk, all smoke and glas. This type of talk will please some of the people and then obam and the dems will slip through the back door. I think if insurance is allowed to compete over the nation as a whole then cost and coverage would be better for all. I have often wondered why policies that are avaliable in one state are not in another, or the same coverage in one state is cheaper than in another. Open up the coverage and let people decide which coverage they want. Iam tired of this crap that we are being told, all people have a right to insurance. I have never seen this in the Constitution. They have the right to insurance if they want it, and are willing to pay for it. Most people that do not have insurance do not wotty about coverage, the tax payer will pick up their bill at the hospital and they get what is needed, but if you have insurance then that procedure or that test is not covered by the company you have. Make all the insurance the same with the same cost, let the public decide what they want and do away with the restrictions of companies doing business across state lines.

    44. Eileen, Mobile, Alab says:

I just returned from our from our Congressman's town hall. What a difference a year makes. Last year we has 17 people at his Town Hall where most of the people there were concerned about losing the KC-135 contract, which is still in legal rumblings and lawsuits and on appeal from Boeing who was challenging the ruling.

Today, there must have been close to 300 – 400 attendees. I don’t think our Community Center had not planned that so many people would show up. We got there an hour before he was scheduled to appear and all the seats were taken (probably about 75 seats). They started to add additional sitting to accommodate the crowds. We’re a lively, but respectful crowd. He told us that some of the Republicans in Congress had put together an alternative health insurance plan, but his committee refused to even look at it. But, he added that might change now that the majority of the public is against the Obama and Nancy Pelosi one. In a few days he will place to alternative one proposed by the Republicans in Congress on his website and it won’t be as thick as the liberal one. He held up the entire Bill and it was close to 10 inches and that a majority of those in Congress haven’t even read one page of the document. They just follow Pelosi and what she wants done. At this point some of the liberals are getting so much pushback from the public, they will now vote against it. Nancy will not have any of that and continues to put pressure on the liberal, moderate and conservative Democrats. They have to decide to either listen to their constituents or follow Pelosi and risk losing their jobs in 2010. The more pressure from the public, the highly unlikely it would pass in its current state.

We shouldn’t have to destroy the current healthcare that works, just fix the parts that don’t. That's the plan the Republicans are working on.

    49. Jerry from Chicago says:

I don't believe for one moment that Mr. Obama has given up on his national health care plan. He was determined to push it through prior to the Congressional August recess. When it didn't happen, he vowed it would be passed before the end of this year.

Planting news releases that his administration has backed off of the "public option" I believe is nothing more than a tactic to cool off the opposition. I believe Mr. Obama's administration have developed backup strategies, under different labels, to accomplish the same goal – government run health insurance for everyone but them.

To Bobby in TX — I must agree with Ben C. in Ann Arbor, MI., I too have worked 42 years trying to support my own family. I don't want to support yours or anyone elses.

In my experience, most of those who are pushing the government programs don't pay taxes. To those who illegally sneaked into this country, we don't owe them a damn thing, other than deportation. I say ship them back to the countries they came from and let them petition their own governments for all the things they want from ours. Keep on allowing this nonsense and they will be sneaking into your house, demanding they be allowed to stay, and I'm sure Mr. Obama will agree with them.

    50. Wallyblu, Zion, IL says:

I've got an idea. Why don't we have the Healthcare program include legal costs? Then the Government could dictate how much Lawyers could charge for their sevices. Let's see how hfar that would get.

    51. Mary....... WI says:

To JO….there are so many government sponsored health programs available to folks without medical insurance. All they have to do is apply for it! You and I have been paying for it for years! So who is more stupid… people against socilaized healthcare or people that don't try and seek help from the counties where they live?!

This healthcare bill is nothing but a take over by the government, a government that wants to play GOD to decide who lives and dies….a way to decrease the population. Watch it Jo, Big Brother is wacthing you…every move you make.

    52. Blake Green, Alameda says:

Robert Davis, how has Obama earned so much distrust? He was elected by an actual majority of Americans in an undisputed election. He continued a bank bailout that was started by the previous administration. His stimulus package, just underway, has slowed what would have been a catastrophe and followed the same approach used by European countries and Japan (which is showing signs of improvement). Where is the dishonesty from Obama? The other side is talking about DEATH PANELS, and you're saying Obama isn't trustworthy. I don't get it! The same people that don't trust a government option in health care completely trusted Bush's wire taping of Americans. AMAZING!!!

Jo: I am sorry – you STUPID people! This is one of the few countries in the world that does NOT take care of its citizens and does not offer health care.

Rebuttal: WRONG! This is a free country where people take care of themselves. And without government force, choose to take care of others.

Jo: You talk about government intervention in health care as if this intervention were a disease!

Rebuttal: Corruption is a disease and government does not run without it. This will definitely give them more power and control over the citizens.

Jo: The truth is that this country’s health care system is run by for-profit health insurance companies! Yes – read again FOR PROFIT.

Rebuttal: That's what private markets do! And government's job to oversee.

Jo: These companies turn sick people away, do not care for people, fight against people who need medical services – it is BRUTAL!

Rebuttal: And it is all do to government regulations and mandates.

Jo: Again, FOR PROFIT. What would Jesus think? More importantly, what would he do?

Answer: Jesus would inspire people to do for themselves, live free and not place their trust in corruption, or government(same thing), or burden others.

Jo: This is disgusting. Government intervention is needed to stop this inhumane for-carnage, to set limits to the disgusting, anti-american, inhumane treatment of American citizens.

Rebuttal: government's failed job all along! Just conjured for this set-up.

Jo: because this is twisted – just like I need the police to step in when a bank is being robbed.

Rebuttal: That's right Jo, you have no control over the behavior or actions of another and things not within our control should be government to PROTECT! You should be in control of your own health care as you are the only one to control YOUR BEHAVIOR!

Jo:Wake up people! Don’t be stupid! You know what it’s like to continually fight with your insurance company, I know you do! This government intervention is to stop this carnage -

Rebuttal: Government intervention caused your complaint. Using their position of oversight to corrupt.

Jo: to not permit someone from being dumped by their insurer and to get the medical attention they need without having to fight big FOR-PROFIT beurocrats. Wake up!

Rebuttal: Governments failure to do their job in every way possible shouldn't be entitlement of COMPETITION in THE FREE MARKET.

      Bureaucrats are government related…Jo.

    55. 1American Patriot says:

Don't trust this liar for a second. He cannot tell the truth and neither can his cronies like Gibbs. Even if he did take the public option off the bill and go for co-ops, you know what would happen? They would receive start up capital from the fderal gov't, and undercut all the private insurers. Everyone would jump ship to join the cheaper co-op plans. This would put the private insurers out of biz through loss of revenue and would overload the co-ops to the point it would drain their reserves and push them to the brink of insolvency. They would then need a bailout from the feds, which Nobama and team would give and they would be taken over by the govt. So it would be a backdoor approach.

One question I'd like to ask…since when is the president of the USA creating legislation???? The president’s Constitutional role is to enforce the law as written by the legislature and interpreted by the judicial system. His role is not to make laws, interpret them, or dictate policy specifics. “The separation of powers system is designed to distribute authority away from the executive branch – an attempt to preserve individual liberty in response to tyrannical leadership throughout history.” The role of Congress, the legislative branch is to enact legislation and declare war. The legislative branch is not meant to become a cheerleader for the executive branch.

I think Barry is the one pushing the healthcare takeover, which is why everyone calls it "Obama's plan". This is why he is holding "town halls" around the country that are completely rigged, in order to try and rally support for his new law. This is why the White House Administration is "clarifying" what is and is not essential for this new law. This violates the separation of powers. How long are Americans going to stand back and allow this?

Everyone should read his report card:

I do not for one minute believe that Big Barry is backing down on the ‘Public Option’ in his plan to ration this nation’s healthcare.

How can he? It is a central point to his entire plan! Without the ‘Public Option’ feature of his plan, Healthscam is a BUST!

Big Barry has DREAMED of the nationalizing of the healthcare system and been touting that concept since 2003 when he was asked about it then.

And in case you missed the audio on it, well you are in luck:

“I happen to be a proponent of a single payer universal health care program. I see no reason why the United States of America, the wealthiest country in the history of the world, spending 14 percent of its Gross National Product on health care cannot provide basic health insurance to everybody. And that’s what Jim is talking about when he says everybody in, nobody out. A single payer health care plan, a universal health care plan. And that’s what I’d like to see. But as all of you know, we may not get there immediately. Because first we have to take back the White House, we have to take back the Senate, and we have to take back the House.”

Then we have his appearance at a campaign event in Albuquerque, NM where he reiterated his position.

So do you REALLY think he’s going to give up just because some ‘cutsie’ from Alaska and a bunch of rightwing(nuts), and mobsters challenge him? Ye-ah… right…

This is a page straight from the High Priest, Saul Alinsky himself. In his ‘Rules for Radicals’ Alinsky wrote:

Rule 8: Keep the pressure on. Use different tactics and actions and use all events of the period for your purpose. “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this that will cause the opposition to react to your advantage.”

Rule 9: The threat is more terrifying than the thing itself.

Rule 10: The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.

Now, breaking those down: Big Barry is keeping the pressure on in his attempt to push through his Obamacare by redirecting the conversation and thereby put the pressure on the Conservatives and throw them off balance in a effort to make them react. The best thing the Conservatives can do here is racket up the noise and point this fact out.

The threat spoken of in Rule 9? This is the threat to the left that the ‘Public Option’ is being considered to be taken off the table. THAT will generate just as much heat on the Left as it has on the Right.

‘Rule 10’? His ‘constructive alternative’: is taking the Public Option out and in turn… he goes on to ‘Rule 11’ and ‘Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it.’

His target? Us: You and me, and all the rest of the American people who question this.

    66. David Black, Sr. says:

I believe there is absolutely NO intention by President Obama and his crony Democrats to abandon the “Public Option”. The rhetoric is simply an appeasement tactic.

The “Public Option”, which ultimately leads to a “single payer system”, is a key piece of the proposed Health Care Reform Act.

After contemplating the latest "missed-statements", due to my political aspirations, I believe the tactic the President and his sycophant Democrats are attempting to employ, add up to the following.

Explained briefly, “Obamahood and his scary men” in Congress know they do not have the votes in the Senate to pass the Health Care Reform Act. Especially as they also see the votes waning in the House, as “Nutsy” Pelosi and her crew, Franks and associates, are experiencing troubles of their own.

The “tactic here, is to make an offer of appeasement, seemingly as a concession, in an effort to make the bill more palatable to the “Blue Dogs, Moderates, and faint of heart” Democrats.

After passing the bill, they will revive the “Public Option” in a reconciliatory bill. In doing so, they only need a “Simple Majority” vote in the Senate, as opposed to a “Super Majority”. In the end, the Liberals maintain the ability to force us into Nationalized Health Care.

Meanwhile, the “Blue Dogs, Moderates, and weak hearted wannabes” can in turn, exclaim that they are unwilling accomplices, and were duped. This “tactic” allows the Party to exercise “Damage Control” in the process, and thereby assists in holding on to some of the jeopardized congressional seats in 2010.

Remember, President Obama is a self-proclaimed "Progressive”, and therefore is willing to appear to concede points in order to win small steps toward accomplishing a goal. Each goal, in turn, is ultimately a step toward completing his agenda, which the Heritage Foundation continues to adequately illustrate.

      Beware America!

Why do we have czars? If we are going to have a health czar for the proposed socialized medicine bill, why do we even bother with secretary of health and human services? Why hasn't anyone challenge the constitutionality of this position? It seems odd to me, that the president could appoint anyone to this position, without any conformation hearings by congress, or elections by the public. PS. JO RELAX!!!!!!!!!

Our only recourse is to band together this comming congressional election and vote these low lifes out of office. Our two party system is in serious trouble, and if we don't band together as responsible citizens then we only have ourselves to blame, and they know it.

Bottom line: married taxpayers will pay for ObamaCare and nearly half of all Americans will get a free ride. Married taxpayers have real skin in the game. They are the ones whose opinions are valid. The opinions of people who don't pay for what they get are irrelevant.
