  • The Truth About Preventive Care

In their USA Today op-ed attacking all criticism of Obamacare as “Un-American” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Majority Leader (D-MD) write:

People must be allowed to learn the facts. … Reform will also mean higher-quality care by promoting preventive care so health problems can be addressed before they become crises. This, too, will save money.

So is Pelosi’s and Hoyer’s claim that preventative medicine will save money a fact? The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) doesn’t think so. CBO director Doug Elmendorf told Congress Friday:

Although different types of preventive care have different effects on spending, the evidence suggests that for most preventive services, expanded utilization leads to higher, not lower, medical spending overall.

    1. Red Black says:

On August 7, 2009 Matt Towery of InsiderAdvantage reported the results of two Georgia polls taken to gauge African-Americans' Approval Rating of President Obama.

Disapproval among African Americans was found to be between 35 to 38%.

This is surprising when you consider that in Nov 2008 that 90% of the African American voters elected Obama.

Yes, Virginia, there is such a thing as Conservative Black Americans. Listen to Herman Cain for proof.

    2. Hal Horvath, Austin, says:

If one spends the hour to carefully read through the dense 7 page CBO letter, and the main referenced review article at the New England Journal of Medicine, one learns…

…both agree that Preventive Care could *save* money if the cost-saving types of preventive care are emphasized, and the "low-value" (CBO) preventive care avoided.

This is just what your common sense would expect, and if you listened to your own common sense, you are correct.

But the CBO letter was oddly edited so that this *fact* is hidden on page 3 in indirect language.

So there's the "rest of the story" as Paul Harvey would say.

    3. Michael, Southern Ca says:

Pelosi is right that people must be allowed to learn the facts. Unfortunately what she then says is not a fact at all, but her opinion. Now the CBO weighs in with a different opinion, and a valid debate should ensue.

What she wants is to make a passionate presentation and woo people to believe her (like her boss does), not argue logically, and then shut down anyone whose opinion differs from hers. THAT is un-American.

    4. Mia says:

Since when has this Congress ever listened to the CBO? They don't care. They think they know better than the "silly CBO" – or their constituents or anyone else for that matter. Obama has turned the country over to Pelosi and her minions – the winged monkeys.

    5. Bobbie Jay says:

Isn't "preventative medicine" an oxy moron? I mean, think about it. Paying money for medicines to prevent sickness? Won't this actually effect the immune system in a negative way? Government Coercion tactic for more control and money over what people should innately be doing for themselves!!

Isn't health taught in government public schools? Government is admitting, once again, their failure.

Because of a health condition, it is suggested that I get a flu shot!!!! Being fortunate and never suffering from the flu bug until… I got the shot!!!!!! After 3 consecutive years of getting the shot and the flu, I quit and have been free from the flu once again and so far, the government's will to give it to me. Can't trust anything GOVERNMENT.

    6. Jim in Wisconsin says:

Well, one truth about "preventative" care is that you've gone and thrown an extra syllable in there. It's "preventive".

    7. Bobbie Jay says:

Good one, Jim. OOPS, me bad. But I still think that is what the "health" class is all about in public government run schools. Teach the basics and carry it through your lifetime, unless of course something else comes out of the sleeve of the government for another crisis.
