  • Morning Bell: Five Questions for Health Care Townhalls

From Long Island to Philadelphia to Austin, Texas, Democrats returning from Washington to host townhalls are getting an earful from constituents about their concerns over President Barack Obama’s health care plan. Despite the fact that all recent polls show that a majority of Americans do not support Obamacare, the left still has the audacity to claim that the concerned citizens showing up at these events are health insurance industry stooges. So Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) told the Center for America Progress: “These health insurance companies and people like them are trying to load these town hall meetings for visual impact on television.” But when actual journalists have reported on who is showing up at these events, they are telling a different story. Reporting on events in Pennsylvania and Texas, the New York Times describes the protests as “organized by loose-knit coalition of conservative voters and advocacy groups.”

This country deserves a respectful, honest debate about health care. And the hundreds of townhalls Members of Congress will be hosting across the country this August are just the place for that conversation to happen. Here are just five questions Americans should be pressing their elected leaders on over the coming month:

Can you promise me that I will not lose my current plan and doctor? President Obama says it is “not legitimate” to claim the “public option is somehow a Trojan horse for a single-payer system.” But Reps. Barney Frank (D-MA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman have all admitted that the public option will inevitably lead to government-run health care. The independent and non-partisan Lewin Group estimates that about 83.4 million people would lose their private insurance if Obamacare became law.

Can you promise that you and your family will enroll in the public plan? Members of Congress and their families currently receive health care through the popular, and completely public-option-free, Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) which allows members of Congress to choose between 283 private health insurance plans. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) proposed an amendment that would require all members of Congress and their staffs to enroll in the newly-created public health insurance plan. His amendment passed by just one vote in the Senate Health Committee. In the House, Rep. Dean Heller (R-NV) offered a similar amendment and all 21 Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee voted it down. If the public plan is so great, then Members of Congress should be willing to forfeit their private coverage and join the millions of Americans who would be moved into the public plan.

Can you promise that Obamacare will not lead to higher deficits in the long term? President Obama said that he would not support health care legislation that would add to the national deficit. But Congressional Budget Office director Douglas Elmendorf has stated that the House health care legislation would “generate substantial increases in federal budget deficits during the decade beyond the current 10-year budget window.” To help Obama keep his promise, Rep. Patrick Tiberi (R-OH) offered an amendment that would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to submit an annual report to the President and Congress, comparing the expected revenue and spending under the bill’s provisions for the upcoming 10-year period. In the event that projected spending under the bill outpaced revenue, the Secretary would have to reduce spending so that it would not exceed revenue. Democrats defeated Tiberi’s amendment.

Can you promise that government bureaucrats will not ration health care for patients on the public plan? President Obama promised on July 22 that health care reform would keep the government out of health care decisions, but both the House and Senate bills call for an increased role of comparative effectiveness research (CER). More information on health care effectiveness is good, as long as doctors and patients are the ones empowered to use that information. Conservatives in both the House and Senate offered amendments prohibiting the use of CER by government to mandate, deny, or ration care. These anti-rationing amendments were defeated in both the House and Senate.

Can you promise me that my tax dollars will not fund abortions? The House bill, as currently drafted, allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services to outline the minimum benefits that must be included in any health plan. There is no specific provision in the bill that would require insurance coverage of abortion. However, since the decisions over benefits are left to the Secretary of HHS, with recommendations from a newly created Health Care Benefits Advisory Committee, there is nothing to prevent the current or future Secretary from including abortion coverage in Americans’ health insurance. Conservatives in both the House and Senate offered amendments that would prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions. The taxpayer funded abortion bans were defeated in both the House and Senate.

Commenting on the townhall phenomenon, University of Pennsylvania political scientist Kathleen Hall Jamieson tells Politico: “If this comes down to vocal individuals, the Obama campaign ought to be able to always outnumber their opponent. And if they’re not, then that’s a problem.” So far it appears that Obamacare has a townhall problem.

91 Responses to Morning Bell: Five Questions for Health Care Townhalls

    1. Tenn Slim says:

      ALL

A consensus. In Western Tenn. we understand fully the Healthcare "reform" bill, increased taxes, reduction of future Health benefits. What are we doing about all this,? very little is possible. Attendance at NON existant Town Hall meetings, local Cafe conversation, personal attendance to our finances, all seem to be fruitless.

Unless and until, the 2010 election occurs, it appears to be the sane thing to do , to hunker down, watch our families and maintain a good sense of dismal humor.

      end

    2. Paul Strol of Texas says:

It seems that we have been lied to by both the Bush and Obama administrations. The 2010 election will be a strong voice from the people that we do not want to be sold out. Democratic Representatives and Senators will feel the blow. They need to be on the same insurance, taxes, jobs level as we are. We need better representation from out elected officials and /or get rid of them.

    3. jim smith says:

Speaking of health care, it is now time for all right minded voters to administer the much needed "Recess Earache" to all those Congressional windbags whose salaries we pay. They are not entitled to time off if they don't do their jobs. The Nobama Kneecap Machine scares all of them, but not voters. Upcoming Town Hall Meetings should be their worst nightmare, an unrelenting nagging for answers that protect us, not rob us of our freedom.

    4. Tom in Grand Rapids, says:

I think we need to vote every member of the House and Senate out of office in the next election. They have to much power and incentive to play politics when they come back term after term.

      Term limits should be mandated.

If the people don't stop this now, we will not have a chance to stop it in the future.

    5. Common Sense West P says:

How about making sure that the illegal immigrant are not granted health care. Taxpayers should not have to pay for that. And I thought Obama did not want to increase the cost but Pelosi won't pass anamendment to make sure that the illegal don't get health care

    6. Robert Mrava, New Be says:

Do not let the Democrats stray from the CBO report. Their entire arguement for health care can be defeated if we just stay focused on those particular talking points.

    7. Carl Slusarczyk,Vern says:

I believe your premise is flawed, how can one ask these politicans to promise anything when we distrust all of them without exception.

History has shown they will promise any and everything and then do the opposit.

    8. C.H. says:

Congress and the Senate and the President, what do they all have in common?

"THEY ALL HAVE THE BEST HEALTH INSURANCE, PAID BY US, THE TAX PAYERS. THEY WORK FOR US, THEY SHOULD BE FINDING A WAY FOR US TO HAVE WHAT THEY HAVE."

" THIS IS HEALTH INSURANCE APARTHEID "

    9. Martin/Georgia says:

Hunkering down will only allow them to tie the noose tighter around our necks. I say we get active, stay active and informed and show support by going to town halls and Tea Parties. I include myself in those requirements. I only wish I could make the September 12th in DC rally. The health care plan is horrible and is unconstitutional.

    10. Ken Jarvis - Las Veg says:

This should be on Letterman as

STUPID HERITAGE FOUNDATION AND GOP QUESTIONS.

      ====

      Can you promise me …..

YES, but I don't always keep my promise

Can you promise me that I will not lose my current plan and doctor?.

      NO. Doctors die.

Can you promise that you and your family will enroll in the public plan?

Of course. IT will be the BEST Plan.

Can you promise that Obamacare will not lead to higher deficits in the long-term?

      YES

Can you promise that government bureaucrats will not ration health care for patients on the public plan?

      YES

Can you promise me that my tax dollars will not fund abortions?

      NO.

    11. Len, Alexandria,KY says:

I would add another Question for Town Hall meetiongs…" WHICH Obama can we trust?"

The one who is promising no one payer's system or Nationalized Health care in 2009 or the Promise that he made to two unions in 2007 " I shall have Nationalized Health care by the end of my first term" in 2007 and echoed by thet Masterful Freddie and Fannie Disater planner the one and only Lady Barney?????

    12. Jack Lohman says:

      >>> "Can you promise me that I will not lose my current plan and doctor?"

Who cares about the "plan" and whose logo is on the check that goes to the doctor or hospital??? I am on Medicare and see the same doctor and go to the same hospital I have for years. THAT is what I care about! And I do not have the denial of care or rescissions common with private insurance companies. Wake up America. You are being conned.

    13. JOHN PAUL JONES,M.D. says:

      Q. What will be the reimbursement to my primary care physician for a routine office call and how many office calls per year will be allowed under OBAMACARE?

    14. David, Cape Cod says:

There should be a sixth and very important question asked of the legislators:

"Can you promise that National Health Care will exclude illegal aliens?" Covering illegals is the next step toward amnesty, voting rights and eventual citizenship.

One additional thought. We already have three single payer (U.S. Government) health systems; Medicare, Medicaid and the Veterans Administration hospitals. Does anyone think these are a model upon which to build? The care our vets get is shameful, and the other two are rife with fraud, corruption and abuse. Tell your legislators to fix what we already have before embarking on another national tragedy.

    15. Mad-andy, Missouri says:

Has anyone thought about approaching our local state reps and trying to get them on a plan of trying to make changes by asserting the 10th ammendment? Could they impose term limits on the federal reps from their own state? Repeal the 17th ammendment and force senators to return to being appointed by the state legislature? Pass laws requiring that all candidates use public funds and only public funds for their campaign? then we decide how much money they spend or is spent on their behalf. after all, why should they be getting any campaign contributions that come for people other than the constituents they represent. They are our reps after all. don't the fed reps still have to meet state requirements to run?

    16. C J Nies, Cincinnati says:

The Heritage Foundation has given us a good road map of what we must ask at these meetings, if our district has them and they show up. Make sure you bring with you. We must also let them know we do not want the illegial aliens here, must else pay for their health care. Let them know such a good plan, then Obama, Senate. & House would all really want to be in this new plan and we should insist that they get to join as well, since they are forcing us, why not them??

    17. Mad-andy, Missouri says:

The thing that concerns me about this health care thing is This:

could it be used as a back door to gun control?

Will this later give them the right to deny your child treatment if you have a gun in your home?

What if the tin-foil-hat people are right this time?

      Is thegovernment's motive population control/reduction?

Or changing the face of the American population as a whole?

If we let this get passed, we are in trouble.

Will you go to the townhall meeting and make your voice heard?

What will you do when they come to take your mother or father to be "put-down" for their/our own good?

      Or your developmentally disabled child?

      Or your terminally ill wife?

      Or yourself?

This is too much power for us to relinquish to the federal government. If a peaceful solution is to be had, it has to happen now; time is running out.

      Enough is enough!

    18. Bob Veigel, Arlingto says:

And if they answered all questions the way we prefer, would you believe them? I know I would not. If you do, you are living in a make-believe world. These people are evil and compulsive liars.

    19. J Morris/Port angele says:

We all need to come together and force a public vote on term limits and make congress use the same health care plan that they want for the American people.

    20. Bernard from Michiga says:

It gets redundant to continually hear these stories so I ask you to humor me on this one, it is absolutley true and I have the copies to prove.

I send a letter to both Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow (michigan Senators) in which I voiced my protest against the Obama HealthCare Reform. Mr Levin answered with this, "….90% of the general population suppoprts this bill and so will I."

Come to find, the polls are showing 77% are against it and that number is increasing daily.

My question to all eleceted officials is "Who do you think you work for?"

My statement is this, " If the elected officials of the USA pass this bill or any other bill against the wishes of the American public you will have deemed yourselves as traitors in the truest sense of the word. You will be dealt with accordingly."

    21. Sheryl, Colorado says:

They do not seem to be listening to us and that is very frustrating. But frustrated people yelling at these politicians is not effective. They will bash whatever we do but if we make it easier for them by looking like crazy irrational people, we lose any power our standing up and speaking out gives us. Ask rational questions, show up in force, stay calm, be respectful. We put them there, we are responsible. We can stand up, we can speak and we can vote them out. Quit putting corrupt, morally bereft people in office and we have a shot at a great country. We vote them in knowing full well what kind of people they are and then we are shocked when they lie to us and cheat us. I don't mean to lecture, I am just as responsible. I am paying attention now and I will not vote irresponsibly ever again. Bring common sense back and vote people with common sense and some sense of values into public office. We can make this happen, I have hope.

    22. Karen/El Paso, Texas says:

This may be too simple for politicians, but instead of giving the banks, auto and insurance companies, etc., the hundreds of billions of dollars in bailout funds; give it directly to the people. If each family (proportionately to family size) was given $10,000-100,000 taxable dollars the economy would definitely be "jump started". Debts could be paid down, autos and houses bought, insurance purchased, and amazingly enough 401k and other investment or savings accounts open (i.e., bank deposits). This money would go into the consumer's and government's coffers. The highest benefit to the government is that the funds for social service programs would not be needed. Most recipients would now be disqualified from receiving food stamps, Medicaid, etc. Of course Medicare and supplemental security income for the disabled could continue where necessary. Another idea to ponder; when a U.S. commercial vehicle crosses into Mexico they are required to purchase Mexican auto insurance. Why can't a foreign citizen entering the U.S. be required to purchase an auto policy, or for that matter, a health policy, (of their choice), prior to driving on our roads or receiving medical care? Just a thought…

    23. Carol, Tucson says:

Illegals will be getting the health care which those of us over 65 will lose. Why should felons get what the seniors lose?

Those over 65 have helped Obama and the mob get where they are today.

    24. John Haumersen, Raci says:

      You missed the first question.

Have you read the bill or bills presented in your chamber? If not, how can you intelligently discuss the advantages or dissadvantages of the bills?

    25. Dorothy Gavin, Pas. says:

I find it amusing when they say "actual" journalists ask who these town hall attendees are?! Haven't you all realized yet all mainstream media have no "acutal journalists" anymore they are all in bed with Obama. They ask no informative questions, they listen to no comments" and GE owns the health care plan as well as the mainstream media. We The people at the townhalls will let our "arrogant public servants" know how we feel whether they like it or not. By the way obama is on record as saying he wants a one payer plan and it is written in this health care fiasco! Oh, Clinton is trying to get press away from health care by going to Korea! What a joke these socialists are!

    26. Laura Van Overscheld says:

The mainstream media would have many believe that the attendees of these meetings are not relevant, however, I believe everyone who did attend is as serious about their feelings about what is going on in Washington as they ever have been. I also believe that many of us are also thinking about voting out the bad players and legislating terms LIMITS as we have ever been. I also intend, as I see others intend, to be more active, more vocal, and more involved than ever before. Look out Washington, the PEOPLE are COMING!

    27. Larry Drew, Tampa says:

I truly believe we are allowing ourselves to be distracted from the most damaging element of this whole fiasco… we raise our voices about the cost of implementation and whether or not illegal aliens will be covered… but the most crucial element is our constitutional right of free access. In spite of obamas insistance that we can continue with our private coverage, and the governement plan is simply an option, is plain and simply a bold faced lie. If you don't have coverage, or make any changes to that which you already have, you MUST take the gov't option…

and, it is inevitable that they will of necessity restrict doctors from treating anyone outside of their own gov't plan…

If we can gain secure concrete guarantees that we will be allowed permanent, untethered access to free market insurance and direct access to the doctors of our choice, the free market will, in the face of imperiling rationing of the gov't plan, eventually sustain a permanent viable market share…

But, right now the gov't is in essence saying, if we will not provide you the best care under our plan, rest assured the more affluent will not be allowed to have it either, even if they are spending their own money…

and the fool in the white house calls this progress…

    28. ireland says:

Over the weekend I contacted numerous conservative legal advocacy groups and organization. And basically they said that there was nothing legally that we could do other then protesting and putting pressure on Congress and the White House. I had hope we could legally block them from passing pork filled Bills, stop the rape of America and possibly reverse that damage that was already done. The sole power to craft and enact legislation rests with Congress under Article I of the U.S. Constitution, is the legislative branch of the federal government. Once legislation is enacted, the courts may interpret it and determine its constitutionality, but no one, under our system of governance can prospectively tell Congress what it can or cannot enact. We will have to remedy that as well as Term Limits. There must be something placed in the Constitution when Congress stops listening to their Constituents, they are no longer representing our voice, they are now only representing a political ideology.

The Tea Parties shows us that all across the board Republicans, Independents and Democrats, liberals, moderate and conservatives are showing up wanting this endless spending to stop. We are racist, bigots, red necks or Country bumpkins; we are concern citizens that are worried about the direction this Congress and President are navigating the socialist waters. The Health Care plan, read the entire House Bill HR 3200: America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 here. http://docs.house.gov/edlabor/AAHCA-BillText-0714

You can monitor and track the Bill in all its stages by going here: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h3200/show#u… They bring all aspects together, combining official government data, what people are saying on the political blogs and legitimate news sources and are a not-for-profit and non-partisan web resource, who gives facts and not political ideology and rhetoric. If the plan is so great then why members in Congress and the President and his family haven’t aren’t participating in the “landmark” healthcare bill. Could it be more about control than quality healthcare, who gets what and how much? Congress screws everything up, it really doesn’t matter which party is in control.

So how is this not taking over our healthcare by dictating what a doctor can do?

    29. Kent, Grants Pass, O says:

"CAN YOU PROMISE" IS THE WRONG QUESTION. OF COURSE THEY CAN PROMISE.

THE QUESTION SHOULD BE: "WILL YOU KEEP YOUR PROMISE OR RESIGN."

    30. Ramona North Dakota says:

This health bill and Cap and trade are going to affect the results of November, 2010. I can hardly wait to see the outcome. I pray everyone will make a very good effort to get out and vote.

When we look at the mess our elected leaders

have made of everything else they were going

to 'fix', how can we possibly believe they

won't do the same with our healthcare?

    33. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

The questions starting with: "Can you promise" are meaningless and futile. A politician will promise you everything but deliver nothing! Liberals are particularly slimy in their tactics and will stop at nothing to get what they want (to impose on us).

There is nothing to be gained by allowing the Government to control anything, particularly anything to do with our lives and freedoms.

We all have to rise up and all say: "NO!", period! Nothing good comes out of the Government. The only thing they should do is guard our borders (which they don't), insure that are general welfare via our Rights and Freedoms are protected (which they don't) and to SERVE the people who elect them (which they don't).

The USA is dying because the dastardly democratic/ liberal/ socialists are killing it. They should all be put on a leaky boat to oblivion.

    35. cynthia overland san says:

Several folks mentioned illegal aliens in their comments about Obamacare. Are you kidding? Illegals already receive health care via our emergency rooms and free clinics. Gang members shot or stabbed, pregnant women carrying our "Newest Citizens", emergency surgeries like appendicitis, car wrecks, etc. Who picks up the tab? You do, brother(sister)! Ask the administrators of hospitals in the border states of CA,AZ,NM, and TX, why they are forced to close. They are the last ones to be denied care because it is in the best political interest of socialists and "progressives" to keep these folks tied to the governmental teat!

Who wants to be the first guinea pig to receive death counseling? I nominate Ken, from Vegas.

So whatever happened to the Hippocratic Oath? Do harm if the cure cost too much or if your too old? So, I guess that means that Senator Byrd and Kennedy won't be receiving any treatment to sustain their lives, they should be hearing their death counseling, right?. Ops, I forgot that Congress and the President and their family members will have a different plan. If they do sign up for this ridiculous Healthcare Bill, then why should we? It's not about health it's about control, handing over your medical records and bank accounts. Any Senator or Congressman who signs this Bill will be fired, permanently. They will lose their healthcare plan and will have to sign on to this Monstrosity. They are the most corrupt people on the planet they won't be touching anything of mine.

Obama is asking for government informers to send an e-mail to flag@whitehouse.gov if they see anybody telling lies about his health care reform bill.

    38. Vickie803 says:

      David, Cape Cod writes:

There should be a sixth and very important question asked of the legislators:

“Can you promise that National Health Care will exclude illegal aliens?” Covering illegals is the next step toward amnesty, voting rights and eventual citizenship.

Hi David, American taxpayers are already paying a staggering amount of money for illegal health care. By current law, they must be served with no ID required. By current law, tax paid interpreters must be provided. Of course there are criminals among them. But the majority are probably very nice. I know a lot of nice people that I simply cannot afford to support.

I read in a Texas newspaper a few weeks ago that Obama had danced all around the word "amnesty" without actually using it in a speech. Does that mean naturalization with tax amnesty? Oh yes, the Catholic Hispanic third-world population explosion is well represented and taken care of here, and I feel certain that there are intentions to eventually make them citizens. I've worked over 40 years with more to go, paying into the system all the while, and now I may have to provide EQUAL MEDICAL ACCESS TO PRIVATE PRACTICES to Hispanics straight off the truck from Mexico while waiting months to get an appointment. That is waaaay too liberal for me. I bet it is waaaay too liberal for liberals if they would think about it.

    39. Lynn B. DeSpain says:

Neither the Congress nor Obama can promise anything, nor even make educated guestimates as to the costs and time frames of any project. Just look at the one billion dollars allocated for buying back the "Gas Guzzlers" at $4,500 each if a citizen had the right Guzzler and bought the right car! That Billion was projected to last until November and was gone in two weeks! Need anyone say more?

    40. Whicket Williams Kin says:

Why don't they just drain all of our money as soon as we earn it, and use it to fund acorn? Why wait, if they have access to drain our bank account whenever they decide, for as much as they decide? How will we know what they do with it? We have no control over when they decide to drain it or how much they take? they just decide whenever to do what ever? What we say doesn't matter, because we are to dumb and uneducated to know what is good for us anyway? and all the protest are astroturff, not real anyway?

    41. Ron, Derry NH says:

Typical socialism; we are going to give you something you didn't ask for, at a price you can't afford and make it law whether you are against it or not. You will be fined for disobedience and forced to pay for the debt whether it is successful or not and will comply to its callous disregard for individuality of circumstance and get used to the bureaucrat as your superior.

Anybody not worried about a government take over of yet another private business must not be aware of history.

When the government seizes yet another monetary flow from yet another private business, when will people begin to see the danger in this??

Freedom of enterprise is being oppressed and replaced with dictatorial policies. What makes this seem American to anybody?

    42. Whicket Williams Kin says:

I hope by now everybody realizes that partys are a divide and confuse issue more than anything If your rep was willing to go to the max for you, we would not be here now. "Never re-elect any incumbent, regardless of party"

    44. Frank, Canfield, Ohi says:

I hear the number of 47 million used for those number people that do not have health insurance so I will use it here as well. I would like to sugest that Obama asked for 47 million volunters to pay for the premiums for the uninsured and leave the other 210,000,000 of us alone. Soros could pick up the slack for quite a few. What do ya say George? Now we're talking change.

    45. Susan says:

These Obamaites and Marxists will shove all these government programs down our throats..they do not think they owe us a thing nor do they expect to be voted out, since they will give all Illegals Amnesty and the illegals will keep them in with their votes… This is why they include them in any Govt. run so called health care bill (perpetual King Obmama care is what it should be called). This guy is a empty suit Marxist and these morons as Pelosi are power mongers. We must show up in DC on the 12th of Sept. I am a 56 yr old wife, mom and grandmom and I have never protested in my life! I WILL BE THERE ON THE STEPS OF "MY" CAPITOL BLDG. WITH MY MEGAPHONE AND MY SIGN! I WANT MY LIBERTY AND I WANT THEM ALL OUTTA THERE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Please join us for this tea party, let's show em!!

    46. Bill, Portland, OR says:

Currently we pay more than anyone else per capita for healthcare, and we have to deal with private insurance companies whose only motivation is profit. When an employer offers health insurance as a benefit, we usually don't have a choice of who insures us. If we buy it out of pocket, the costs are ridiculously high. We have to deal with bureaucrats at health insurance companies who purposely make things difficult and confusing, so that we go without care instead of trying to fight them. Private health insurers require people to go to only network doctors (so we don't get to choose a doctor.) They deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. They only cover prescriptions from a limited formulary. They have long wait times to see a primary care doctor, and they can drop your coverage at any point if you become to expensive. The current system works great for insurance company executives and works terribly for patients and doctors. And it costs more than Medicare. People fighting against "Obamacare" are either blind ideologues or the sheep following them. No one is taking your guns. Your taxes might go up, but you would actually be getting something for them.

    47. BBNC says:

In the United States, when a government official sends out a call for citizens to report to him when a citizen speaks against the Obamacare, it sends chills up my spine. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave and our brave men and women are fighting and dying for our freedoms on the battlefields around the world today. And we have a president, congressmen and women who are our elected representatives and they are not listening to the electorate…two words…'term limits'…2010!

    48. Andrew McCreight-Lib says:

The National HealthCare Movement initiated by OBama is looking in the wrong direction.

We need to address the abuses of the current system first.

We should attack fraud and identify people who can afford healthcare but choose not to because they want to spend thier money on wants instead of needs.

These people should not expect the rest of us to pay the way for this kind of behavior.

The US should also define the cost of healthcare to illegal aliens and then send a bill to their countries of origin.

I do not put much stock in the World Court but we should bring this problem to a head and take countries such as Mexico to court and make them pay for the healthcare that their citizens receive in the US.

We need to atleast make the effort of collection and put some teeth into it.

The latter may sound out of the box but why should the citizens of the US have to pay for the Healthcare of non-citizens. It is time to hold their country of origin responsible for their Healthcare issues.

    49. Curt, Columbus, Oh says:

There is one way to prove that our townhall meetings/tea parties are not being stuffed with conservative hecklers and others who just want to disrupt these meetings. I submit that all bills, from now on, be brought before the American people to vote on. These issues before us today have become to important to let our ineffective elected officials decide these things for us! Politicians have proven time and again that they are, for whatever reason, incapable of keeping the best interest of America foremost in their minds. They have forgotten that that is why they are in Washington D.C. As an example, let's bring the Healthcare bill before the American people for a vote, just as it is, and I guarentee that bill will fail BIG! And when it does, those politicians who think our townhall's and tea parties are brought about by right-wing agitators will know better. They will know that the American people, not the two party system, spoke clearly and spoke louldly!

    50. Molly, Tennessee says:

Reform health insurance. The status quo isn't working.

    51. thomas watkins 100ew says:

The FIRST question should be, "In a thousand pages, can you cite me to the page which deals with TORT REFORM. Can you tell me how the bill deals with the malpractice mess which alone drives up the cost of medical care exponentially. Why nothing about capping verdicts, screening out frivolous suits, helping the doctors cut costs by not practicing ridiculous defensive medicine, ordering ten tests for every one indicated just to protect themselvews. And reducing malpraxctice insurance costs.

WHERE IS THE TORT REFORM AND MEDICAL MALPRACTICE PROVISION IN THIS 1000 page bill????

    52. Donna/Norfol,Va says:

I hope these town hall meetings continue but, everybody who attends need to keep their cool. If you don't you'll be playing into the liberals hands and the negative comments their making.

    54. A. Terranova, Ormond says:

If the government passes nationalized health care in any way, shape or form, we will lose. Our president is not about healthcare, he is about government power and control. Under this man and this Congress, we will be a totally socialist Marxist nation in just a few short years. If you look at the number of "czars" Obama has appointed without Congressional approval and if you look at who they are, where they are coming from politically, you will see where we are going and why. The why is the important thing. Obama was selected to be the president long ago by an elite group of international bankers, high profile dignitaries and political groups with much power. Their objective is to make our country totally impotent by whittling away our freedoms until we are no longer a sovereign nation. It is true and it is happening now.

    55. Russell, Boyd, Tx says:

Regardless of your race or political affiliation and you are a citizen of the United States of America, and you are not paying attention to what is happening to our country, You are being ignorant!

If you are an elected political official and You are not paying attention to what The People are saying, you are GONE!

The Constitution of the United States is REAL and has worked for this country for 100's of years, DON'T TRY TO CHANGE OR BELITTLE IT! LEAVE IT ALONE AND LET IT BE WHAT IT IS AND LET AMERICA BE WHAT IT IS—THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH!

      GOD BLESS AMERICA

Furthermore Obama, if you think America is a racist country, then how do you explain a black man becoming president of the United States?

    56. Janet, New Jersey says:

(hypothethical) I'm 85,my 4th death discussion is due. A 20 yr old doing community service advisor(per the plan) arrives(this a separate government advisor/entity, not my doctor) to "help" me. He/she has a list of government approved attorneys(former congressmen, donors, etc)who will write the "government approved"documents I need to decide how I die,& what happens to my few assets. I have no close relatives. I already have an estate/end of live plan, but the 20 something says I need a "review" of everything by one of these specialists(former congressmen, donors, etc)to make sure my medical plan stays in effect. Does the 20 something get a kickback?? Of course the attorney charges for the review & will re-write everything & perhaps name themselves as executor of my estate since no one else is "local"and write in so much legalize that only another attorney can understand it & charge me an exhorbitant fee/& collect the executor fee for my estate. Thank you 20 something. Hope you got your kickback.

    57. Janet, New Jersey says:

I also challenge the Heritage Institute to compute the effect of allowing all the Federal, state, municipal & education employees to opt out of Social Security, & Medicare over the past 75 years & how this has contributed to the instability of the entire system especially now since these folks make up 50% of the population but do not contribute to these plans

    58. CA Craft/ Iowa says:

I respect your questions and the need for them. But…..I do not trust the word of this administration. Their modus operandi is deceit. They say one thing and mean another. Hidden agendas abound. Even if Obama and the Democrats answer the questions, it doesn't mean that is how it will be carried out. I can't believe anything they say and I don't. Their plans and schemes are not for the good of the people. Mr. Obama does not love America, and is trying to destroy it by forming it into his own warped image. Therefore, he is not to be trusted in anything he says.

    60. HSR0601 says:

The 'innovative' idea of a 'pay for value / outcome' pack came after the CBO had previously pointed out this health care reform wouldn't work without 'fundamental' change in the out of date system. It is said that as much as 30 percent of all health-care spending in the U.S. -some $700 billion a year- may be wasted on tests and treatments that do not improve the health of the recipients, and this 700 billion dollars a year can cover a lot of uninsured people.

      The expected Benefits of this 'innovative idea' are as follows ;

      1. Meet the objective of revenue-neutral.

Supporters of the agreement say it could save the Medicare System more than $100 billion a year and 'improve'

care, that means more than $1trillian over next decade, and virtually needs no other resources including tax on the

wealthiest. Supposedly even the 'conservative' number of such savings might be able to meet the objective of

      revenue-neutral.

      2. Quality and affordability.

If you are a physician, and your pay is dependant upon your patient's outcome, you will most likely strive to

prescribe the best medicine earlier in the process, let alone skipping the wasteful, unnecessary treatments.

      3. No intervention in decision-making.

The innovative idea of 'a pay for outcome' will more likely prompt team approach and decision, as at Myo clinic.

Under the 'pay for outcome' pack, for good reason, best practices as 'recommendations' would simply help them

make a better decision, and the government won't still have to meddle in the final, actual decision-making

      process as a non-expert.

      4. Speed up the introduction of IT SYSTEM.

The pay for 'Outcome' pack is most likely to expedite the introduction of Health Care IT SYSTEM.

The synergy effect of the combined Health Care IT & a pay for 'outcome' system may allow the clinicians to

'correctly' diagnose and effectively treat a patient earlier in the process so that it can measurably scale back the

crushing lawsuits and deter the excuse for unnecessary cares to make fortunes.

      5. Accelerate the progress in medical science, in return, it saves more cash.

      6. Settle the regional disparity.

      7. Reduce the emergency room visits & save immense costs.

Public health insurance plans such as Medicare and Medicaid paid for more than 40 percent of U.S. emergency

room visits in 2006, according to government figures released recently. Many experts say reducing these hospital

visits would be an important way to lower the enormous, and growing, expense of U.S. health care.

I share the opinion that unlike the insurer-friendly senate plan by 'some' members, only a strong public option will be capable of getting the premium inflation under control and saving the U.S in turbulence.

To my knowledge, a dual system tends to deliver better results than a pure single payer system. Supposedly, to be or not to be might be up to the innovations like a pay for value program, otherwise, the forthcoming start-ups may fill the void with competitive deals. The competition based on 'fair' market value would be a beauty of true capitalism, not monopoly, an objective for anti-trust.

      Thank You !

    61. HSR0601 says:

-Some say we don't have faith in government, others say, we will be forced out.-

To my knowledge, a dual system tends to deliver better results than a pure single payer system. 62. Angry American, Dayt says:

Nancy Pelosi has instructed the democrats to malign the insurance companies when confronted at Townhall meetings. Do these people not realize that the retirement funds of millions of Americans are invested in these insurance companies? If insurance companies are forced out of business, what happens to these retirement funds?!!! In addition, huge numbers of responsible citizens have planned for long term health care in their senior years by purchasing long term health insurance. I can't find an answer to this situation in the health bill, I'm sure for obvious reasons. People pay their insurance premium and the government just obliterates it??? I'm sure our Congressmen and Senators would be happy to address this matter at a Townhall meeting because they've read the bill. I urge everyone to ask them about this!! This is ANOTHER American crisis waiting to happen!!

    64. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

We can never expect the dems and obama to admit that their plan is wrong. The claim that the meeting is a loose knit effort to cause trouble is just their way of explaining away the discontent of people with the dems and their BS.

The main line media will never say a negative thing about obama, to do so would show their belief that they backed the wrong person, as we all know they are the ones that ran the election with all the praise and BS they could muster. We as citizens, how much longer I do not know, must show our beliefs at the election of 2010. I do not know about anyone else, but I seriously doubt I will ever vote for a dem again, and the republicans need to get their act together to reatin my vote as well.

First of all. just what kind of drug does one have to take-presuming the Fraud approves it- to believe for even one nano-second that he will not once again show that he is a consummate liar? He has not kept his word in all of his over-privileged life. A narcissist can never be wrong, just ask one.

Is anyone so deluded by the cloud of verbal fertilizer being sent aloft by the "Administration" that the useless slugs in Congress can now be trusted to partake of the same healthcare hemlock which the Americans could be forced to drink? Please send us the brand name.

"Five talking points" a nice idea. BUT, being

kind to unkind and unresponsive people seldom works, only rarely does it work. It IS necessaary to shout and holler and make the politicians scared for their continued fat cat lives. WE must make this coming election the low water mark for these scurrilous ones and remove them from office.

The gentlemanly "five talking points" are nice in theory, but in actuality, these "career politicans" are already ignoring us. Again, time to head for the voting booths….and EVERY TIME AN ELCTION COMRS UP, THROW OUT THE INCUMBENT. Always elect someone new.. do not let these human ticks imbed themselves to bleed and infect the rest of us for their own benefit!!!!!!!!!

If the American people would just wake up and make it impossible for anyone to have a "political career". There should be no such thing.

Why have they allowed themselves to be deluded by the cloud of verbal fertilizer which continually voices the premise that ONLY "professional" politicians can make the machinery of our government work??

    66. Theresa, KY says:

It's simple, the government cannot be trusted, whatever they say is a lie, especially Obama. What one good thing has he done for America? He puts it down continuously on foreign land, he has no respect for the Constitution (which he will do away with IF we allow it to happen!) He is a Socialist who will stop at nothing short of turning America into a socialist nation if "WE THE PEOPLE" DO NOT STOP HIM & THE OTHER POWER HUNGRY DEMOCRATS in Washington! This healthcare plan is rediculous, they are willing to upset the whole nation, to help so few!! Check the numbers!! But it's NOT ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE! IT IS ABOUT GIVING THE GOVERNMENT COMPLETE CONTROL OVER OUR LIVES! PLAIN AND SIMPLE! Nobody in their right minds would want socialism, we are a free nation..and WE HAVE GOT TO FIGHT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY – IT'S LEFT UP TO US "THE PEOPLE". Obama and his Cronies will destroy America.

The way I see it, you should just run the BILL OF RIGHTS through a PAPER SHREDDER. The GOVERMENT, is TEARING IT TO PIECES anyway. When you cannot (EXERSIZE YOUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH),or cannot choose to have HEALTH CARE or NOT, we are LIVING IN a the STATE OF SOCIALISUM. This is a very sad state of affiars, when so many AMERICANS have FOUGHT & DIED FOR THESE FREEDOMS-RIGHTS.

Thanks for the fantastic summary ~ really appreciate you effort.

    70. Carl Mills says:

The health rationong bill appears to have three strikes against it:

      (1) uncontrollable cost as insurance suppliers decline to compete with the single provider; ie, the federal government

      (2) rationing of health care which in the past was abundantly available around the clock

      (3) horrifying infanticide, euthanasia, and fewer alternatives to abortion, the American holocaust

Currently, the president and his backers can say whatever they want about health rationing, not knowing what exactly will emerge from the Congress. We must not end up with less health coverage than we have now. The system may be costly, but in fact it is doing as designed. As insurance, you may pay into the pool for a couple of decades and then get a catastrophic injury treatment paid for without denial of service.

In my case, I was healthy until age 51 and then broke a leg. I spent nearly a month in traction, surgery, and therapy. I was delighted to get a statement from the hospital that more than $20000 in expenses were fully covered by health insurance.

Under federal health rationing, what happens when a person above age 50 breaks his leg? Does the ambulance reroute him to hospice instead of the emergency room? Does the surgeon's team refuse to treat him because it happened on a federal holiday? Is he rerouted to treatment in a different time zone where loved ones can't monitor his progress? Any of these outcomes may save some money, but it is definitely no improvement in service.

    71. Al, The Villages, Fl says:

I think it is useful to put the pressure on the dems when they come home in the townmeetings. However, from a substance point of view, since they have not read the bill and are using talking points that contradict what is currently in the bill, it isn't much of a two way exchange. Hopefully, the end result will be a huge backlash against the dems and their socialist friends in the next two elections.

By the way, for the seniors out there, can anyone figure out why the AARP is supporting Obamacare? So far, the AARP hasn't been able to articulate their rationale. I left the AARP years ago when they decided to pit us oldsters against the young in the debate to fix social security instead of supporting a reasonable fix that would address both needs.

    72. Jeane, Houston says:

It is so simple – to cut health care costs, any new government plan must cut the kinds of medical care it pays for [e.g. cancer therapy] and the amount it pays for each eligible type of care. Medicare has already reimbursement to physicians for many types of care, and another cut is planned for this year. There are already physicians who will not take Medicare patients. This would happen under any nationalized health care program, too. In that case, Obama would have to mandate that all physicians must see the patients. And, where will that lead? Physicians from outside the US who will work for less. All politicians who vote for the proposed health care disaster should be voted out of office in the coming years. Voting is the only weapon we have left.

I have been without healthcare for over 20 years now. It is about time 40 million people in this country have it too. Let the Republicans who have healtcare keep what they have. How can you deny us equal and fair share in a national health care system that is available to all people. I was a teacher for twenty years and always worked hard for a living. For years I worked diligently for 7000 a year. How can you Republicans deny me equal healthcare under the law. Shame on you for attempting to disrupt townhall meetings that are attempting to develope a healthcare system for all. Keep the system you have now but don't attempt to prevent 40 million Americans from having one too. I've said everything here that I would say to my mother at the dinner table. She is a proud American and wants health care too.

Are you kidding. Wake up people! This is not something we want, unless all the politicians receive the same care as the rest of us. I, for one, do not and will not pay for abortions. Why not look for something more important, like finding a cure for cancer

    77. mary, ohio says:

      IF THIS HEALTH CARE PLAN,IS GOOD FOR THE EVERYDAY AMERICAN CITIZEN THAN IT SHOULD BE JUST AS GOOD, FOR THE PRESIDENT, CONGRESSMEN/WOMEM, SENATORS, AND ALSO THE REST OF OUR GOVERMENT ELECTED OFFICALS. WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT, WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, NO LONGER HAVE THE RIGHT TO SPEAK OUR MINDS, WE ARE BEING DENIED FREEDON OF SPEECH, NOT TO MENTION THE CHOICE OF HEALTH CARE OR NOT. I DO NOT HAVE ANY HEALTY CARE, AND I DO NOT WANT ANY SORT OF HEALTH CARE THAT THE GOVERMENT, WOULD HAVE TO OFFER, I'AM NOT A WEALTHY PERSON, I PAY MY OWN WAY.       All;

The roaches in Washington have stopped pretending to listen or care about the People they work for. For us to continue trying to get their attention is to beat our heads on the sidewalk. Instead, we should focus all our efforts on our state legislators. In 1787, it was the states that created the Constitution which created the Federal Government. The government was not party to the Constitution but a result of it.

A majority of the state legislatures all passing a similar resolution firing the entire federal government, withholding all tax revenue, and then replacing it with new elected officers and eliminating all non-specified legislation and court rulings, would be the only legal and peaceful resolution possible as it would garner the support of the Armed Forces as a legal, Constitutional action by the original writers of the Constitution under the Tenth Ammendment.

Sorry to be so late responding, but I don't usually hang out at sites like this. I tripped over this site from – - – well, never mind. There was so much in the article, I didn't know where to start, so I'll just take one tiny detail dropped so casually (and not linked, I noticed):

If you really believe that "The independent and non-partisan Lewin Group" is really independent and non-partisan, then you haven't been paying attention. Everyone knows the Lewin Group is part of a subsidiary of United Health – it is a shill for the insurance industry, just like the Heritage Foundation was created to sound like an "independent and non-partisan" think tank when it is so far to the right, that non-partisan is a blatant lie. Still taking all those funds from Exxon? $530,000 from 1998 – 2007. Ah, yes. How much are you HF people getting from the health care industry? Never mind. I'll look it up. You've already lied so many times, I don't believe anything you say.

If any of you want to smear me for the facts herein, feel free. I won't be back. I'd rather spend my time on sites I can trust, where I know I will get facts – and the truth.

In order to stop the federal government from pushing bad bills and bad laws is to take back this nation. The arrogance of our elected public servants towards the American people, as seen at the recent town hall meetings, is a result of our complacent attitude. We need to be much more involved and watch every move Congress makes.

We also need to vote all representatives out after no more than two terms. Career politicians are ruining this country; most of them spend more time lobbying for campaign money for their next election than working for us. Congress has made the perks of office too attractive and Washington has become a permanent home for many of these people; Some in Congress have been in office longer than any kings or dictators ever were. This is not what the Founding Fathers had in mind.
