  • Townhall Downfall: Senator Arlen Specter

Despite President Barack Obama’s deadline, both the House and Senate failed to pass Obama’s health care plan before they adjourned for the month of August. Now Senators and Representatives will be returning home to participate in one of America’s greatest democratic traditions: the townhall.

The events afford citizens the rare opportunity to share their opinions directly with their elected officials. Considering the unprecedented scope of power that President Obama wants to exercise over our nation’s health sector (a sector that is one-sixth of our entire economy and larger than the United Kingdom), we’re sure Americans will have plenty to say.

Today’s Townhall Downfall focuses on Arlen Specter. Pennsylvania’s citizens want to know if he’s read the 1,000 page bill overhauling our health care system. Watch:

    1. Bobbie Jay says:

I enjoyed the part where the woman was saying "I have never seen congress work so hard…" I would change the following to… "at deceiving the American people into government dependency."

We are in dangerous hands of members of government that lie, cheat and steal to take our freedom, liberty and independence.

    2. stephen Bures Des M says:

no free healthcare for illegal immegrants in the USA.

Congressmen and Senators should be forced to read each page of the bills they pass or have 2 pages maximum for each bill.

    3. Grace, Florida says:

The one thing we need to remember is that Turncoat Spector also said he is in favor of a single payer system. Obviously another nail in his coffin come election time. Imagine the spin that is now being put on these townhalls that the people are paid protestors. These people must think thay are dealing with MoveOn.org and Acorn. People are pissed off and don't want National Healthcare and if it's passed you can bet these people who voted for it will be voted out of office. Then we'll see if they were paid protestors or not!

    4. Chuck in Virginia says:

Talk about hypocrisy, Congress will not pledge to give up their current healthcare for the plan that they are trying to sell us. If for some strange reason this insanity is passed and turns out that our leaders lied to us, there should be criminal charges levied against them.

    5. ROBERT DAVIS says:

MY CONGRESSMAN LLOYD DOGGETT FROM TEXAS GOT SHOUTED DOWN. HE WAS ASKED IF HIS VOTERS DID NOT WANT THIS BILL WOULD HE STILL VOTE FOR IT AND HE SAID YES. PEOPLE JUST WENT BALLISTIC AND HOLLERED HIM OUT OF THE ROOM!! HE IS SURE FOR DEFEAT IN 2020 FOR VOTES ON CAP AND TAX AND THIS STUPID HEALTH BILL.

    6. Brian, Philadelphia says:

Senator Spector has been such a colossal disappointment for the 5 years I've lived here in PA. I'm really glad he'll have a serious democrat primary challenge, and that a fresh republican will run against him in the general election coming up in 2010.

Spector campaigns as a conservative, but he legislates like a liberal. No real integrity. It's time to show him the door…

I do want to learn one lesson from him, though. When he "shared" the chair of the judiciary committee with P. Leahy because it was nice and fair, he earned zero consideration. Lately, when he was still the ranking Republican, Leahy did not return the favor. When he switched sides, he still didn't earn any favor. Filing this lesson away for the next time a conservative has actual authority to do something, and the libs whine that leadership should be shared; let's remember how that works when the shoe's on the other foot.

    7. charles r broad says:

i wonder if specter would have to sit down with "gov medical counselors" to determine if soceity should be burdened with his health care at his age and his having cancer….like they expect all us normal citizens to do once obama care is passed by these idiotic traitors..specter must go!!!! as should all in dc and harrisburg

    8. Donald Pannagl says:

All cogressman need to start representing the people that elected them instead of representing them selves and trying to get as much power as they can. If proformance is a measure of compensation none of them deserve a pay check.

    9. Kerry Blair, Portlan says:

Bobbie Jay is dead on right. When one considers that virtually every program created by politicians has failed i.e., social security, medicare, immigration, energy policy, etc. we can be scared to death at the thought of these incompetents ruining our health care coverage.

    10. Tim Connolly says:

Healthcare is not a commodity like grain or oil. Prices for commodities are set by the seller and if the buyer doesn't want them they remain unbought.

Healthcare has to be paid for when it is needed which of course is not predictable(preventative care aside)

This means if you are sick it has to be paid for by a pool of "healthy" individuals. If the pool is big enough, and the healthy outnumber the sick then care is provided. Unfortunately the socialist model our government proposes is not being run by those who can make efficent and intelligent decisions about use. And by taking the "consumer" out of the decision process costs skyrocket (we are all very good at spending other peoples money recklessly). I predict an acceleration of procedural healthcare i.e., more money spent on tests, surgeries, medications because these can be measured more easily and are often confused with efficent healthcare and less spent for face time i.e., compensating a practioner fairly for time spent assessing, discussing, planning, comforting, explaining. That is where the biggest potential for savings come in, especially at the end of life where a huge chunk of our cash is being spent. Care and concern at this point in a patients treatment pays off not only in better quality of care as perceived by patients but also potentially saves a boat load of money.

    11. Rob in Atlanta says:

I believe the woman was Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the Sectretary of Health and Human Services. She was worse than Spector and they booed her more than him.

    12. Jerry from Chicago says:

Did you hear Specter try to defend not reading proposed legislation because decisions had to be made fast? I heard the audience demanding to know WHY. WHY does a bill have to be ramed through so fast? Is it because the people who proposed it don't want the American people to find out what Congress is doing with our money and our security? THIS IS UNCONSCIENABLE.

No wonder Mr. Obama is surprised at people's outrage to learn that he didn't read the

Stimulus bill before he signed it. Apparently, no one in Congress or the Senate reads proposed legislation. Who do the American people think they are, demanding their "representatives" read legislation before voting on it? So what if it costs hundreds of billions of tax dollars?

Congress exempts itself from most laws it passes so it is no surprise that they aren't concerned about the impact or cost of national health care.

So far, has anyone even heard of a Congressman, Senator or any other federal government employee volunteering to give up his or her government health care plan to join Obama-Care? I sure haven't.

    13. Gary in Texas says:

      I am ENRAGED.

I just called all of my representative's offices (3 of them that taxpayers are paying for)….. and his staff says

"He may not be scheduling a Townhall meeting".

      I said……

"Are you kidding me….He MUST schedule a Townhall Meeting so me and my friends and all the people that put him in office can question him about the way he is voting", because we don't agree."

You need to get "in their face" or they will just ignore us and do whatever Pelosi tells them to do. Who do they fear more, Pelosi or the American people ?

These modern politicians have been castrated and have no spine.

    14. Dora Hester, Hidden says:

We must show up at these townhall meetings. The month of August is crucial to let Washington KNOW that they cannot impose this "CHANGE" on us without being voted out of their plush chairs at the next election.

Beware, there is a battle being raged and it goes way beyond healthcare. We are talking about your FREEDOM!!!

      Move, participate and be heard!!!

    15. TURTLE, TUCSON AZ. says:

UNFORTIONATELY WE ENDED UP WITH THE PEOPLE THAT GOT THE MOST VOTES

ITS A LITTLE TOO LATE TO COMPLAIN NOW ABOUT ANYTHING, WE CAN'T STOP IT BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE THE VOTES TO STOP IT

SAME PEOPLE GET VOTED BACK INTO OFFICE YEAR AFTER YEAR, EVEN AFTER ALL THE BAD MOUTHING OF HOW THEY VOTE, SO UNTIL YOU SET TERM LIMITS ACROSS THE BOARD WE WILL NEVER GET THE CHANGE PEOPLE WANT

SEEMS MOST VOTERS THINK CONGRESSMAN AND SENATORS ARE LIFETIME APPOINTMENTS LIKE OUR SUPREME COURTS IT COMES NO SURPRISE TO ME HOW THINGS HAVE GOTTEN JUST IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS AFTER ALL TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT WHAT THE MAJORITY AMERICANS PUT INTO OFFICE POOR CHOICES END UP WITH POOR LEADERSHIP & POOR GET POORER

    16. Lynn B. DeSpain says:

So far every Change has been for the worse. How many more Changes do we need? Basically we have a President who not only is a Pacifist, which disqualifies him for Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, but who is a Socialist and believes that it is the absolute right of the Poor to live off of the Rich! He has gone so far as to create Czars answerable only to him and not to Congress nor to the American Public. The adage of old is, "If you want to ruin a good thing, let the government in."

    17. Linda Carlsbad, CA says:

We americans don't want this health care. The media is saying it is the Insurance Companies having people go to the townhall meetings. Do they ever get it right? They don't want to listen to the American people, they couldn't pass this if they did.I have called, faxed Congress. Keep it up America, they will be sorry in the next election.

    18. Chuck in Virginia says:

I just heard a Democratic Strategist (whatever that is) spouting the party line that there is a healthcare crisis in this country that needs to be fixed now. Have we heard “crisis”, have we heard “we have to do it now” somewhere before. The Presidents message is getting old. The biggest crisis we have is being told that we need to give up our freedom and wealth for the common good.

This same person was saying that all the angry people at town halls and tea parties are not representative of the masses. He said that we could not have a debate when everyone was so hostile and angry. I wonder if it ever dawned on him or his boss, Obama that the reason for the anger is that the Dems do not want an honest debate before rushing bills through congress.

Mr. President where is the transparency that you promised?

    19. Roger Crassi (New Yo says:

We the American people need to awaken from our entitlement-induced sleep. This current administration and their "congressional clones" have but one priority; viz., to strip every American of his fundamental freedom to become all that he can through honest, hard work, and to destroy the foundations upon which America was founded. Their DREAM is to remake this great land of freedom into a Socialist/Communist State. As such, they should be considered Traitors and dispatched by vote!

    20. eva, new jersey says:

the breathtaking speed at which program after program after program are being rammed through is absolutely dizzying! this is nothing less than ominous–it's all calculated to keep our heads spinning so we can't think about their sinister agenda.

    21. David VanNorman Wi says:

He just won't listen . He needs to go .

    22. Cheryl Perasso, La V says:

I agree with you Dora. I have been emailing, writing letters and calling on the phone. I contacted Glen Beck, and Sean Hannity regarding AARP's support of Obamacare. Go to AARP Bulletin website re health care reform and click on comments. AARP members are dropping like flies.

I will attend any townhall meetings. We need bumper stickers, signs and whatever it takes. In all my years I have never seen such a corrupt government. Obama is changing our country like he said in all his speeches but it's not the change we need. If we don't stop this corruption, our nation will never be the same again.

    23. Richard, West Texas says:

We have good legislators here in West Texas, and they all happen to be Republicians. My Rep is planning a town hall meeting and he sends out regular e-mails. So far all three of our legislators are against all this crap, healthcare reform by Obamation, cap and tax, the stimulus and all the other plans to undermind this country. Our legislators know they will not be re-elected if they back crap like these liberals support. I will be there and make sure they understand my feelings.

    24. JJ in Texas says:

I am married to a small town physician who was born in a third world country. This health care bill has her very concerned. Not only will it cause the loss of private insurance, but it will also cause the loss of many specialties. The whole thing will lead to job losses for specialty physicians, as well as lack of health care in those areas. If you find yourself in need of a cardiac cath, give it up. Need a transplant, good luck. It will all lead to the deaths of many Americans for no reason. Why, because most Democrats are Socialists in disguise.

My wife tells me anytime something is not written in to health insurance it is automatically coverd. She is a Quality Analyst for AETNA. Since abortion is not in the health care bill it is automatically covered. The senators and anyone who says differently. I just heard the same thing come out of the University of Noter Dame Legal Professor. Call Your Represenatives Tell Them Kill The Bill They Are Lying.
