  • The AP Fact Checks Obama on Health Care

The AP’s Calvin Woodward and Jim Kuhnhenn have an item out today challenging key assertions President Barack Obama made in his press conference last night:

OBAMA: “We already have rough agreement” on some aspects of what a health care overhaul should involve, and one is: “It will keep government out of health care decisions, giving you the option to keep your insurance if you’re happy with it.”

THE FACTS: In House legislation, a commission appointed by the government would determine what is and isn’t covered by insurance plans offered in a new purchasing pool, including a plan sponsored by the government. The bill also holds out the possibility that, over time, those standards could be imposed on all private insurance plans, not just the ones in the pool.

Indeed, Obama went on to lay out other principles of reform that plainly show the government making key decisions in health care. He said insurance companies would be barred from dropping coverage when someone gets too sick, limits would be set on out-of-pocket expenses, and preventive care such as checkups and mammograms would be covered.

It’s true that people would not be forced to give up a private plan and go with a public one. The question is whether all of those private plans would still be in place if the government entered the marketplace in a bigger way.

He addressed some of the nuances under questioning. “Can I guarantee that there are going to be no changes in the health care delivery system?” he said. “No. The whole point of this is to try to encourage changes that work for the American people and make them healthier.”

He acknowledged then that the “government already is making some of these decisions.”

    ___

OBAMA: “I have also pledged that health insurance reform will not add to our deficit over the next decade, and I mean it.”

THE FACTS: The president has said repeatedly that he wants “deficit-neutral” health care legislation, meaning that every dollar increase in cost is met with a dollar of new revenue or a dollar of savings. But some things are more neutral than others. White House Budget Director Peter Orszag told reporters this week that the promise does not apply to proposed spending of about $245 billion over the next decade to increase fees for doctors serving Medicare patients. Democrats and the Obama administration argue that the extra payment, designed to prevent a scheduled cut of about 21 percent in doctor fees, already was part of the administration’s policy, with or without a health care overhaul.

Beyond that, budget experts have warned about various accounting gimmicks that can mask true burdens on the deficit. The bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget lists a variety of them, including back-loading the heaviest costs at the end of the 10-year period and beyond.

    ___

OBAMA: “You haven’t seen me out there blaming the Republicans.”

THE FACTS: Obama did so in his opening statement, saying, “I’ve heard that one Republican strategist told his party that even though they may want to compromise, it’s better politics to ‘go for the kill.’ Another Republican senator said that defeating health reform is about ‘breaking’ me.”

    ___

OBAMA: “If we had done nothing, if you had the same old budget as opposed to the changes we made in our budget, you’d have a $9.3 trillion deficit over the next 10 years. Because of the changes we’ve made, it’s going to be $7.1 trillion.”

THE FACTS: Obama’s numbers are based on figures compiled by his own budget office. But they rely on assumptions about economic growth that some economists find too optimistic. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, in its own analysis of the president’s budget numbers, concluded that the cumulative deficit over the next decade would be $9.1 trillion.

Medicare in my 20 yrs. In practice continually decreased reimbursement. One major cost was the MRI's to protect myself from LITIGATION costs! I was never sued nor had a complaint filed against me in my time in practice.

This proposed bill does not include changes in the tort system. Congresspersons should look in a mirror to see the problem. Also if this plan is so great, then congress should take the lead and be required to change their and their families to it.

What you are witnessing is the fine art of lying without having to go to jail for them. How do we know when Obama is lying? When he opens his mouth to speak!

    4. charle tallman st. l says:

The tell tail sign that is a bad bill is the fact that the president and congress don't want to commit to their familes being subject to it?

    5. Grace, Florida says:

Reform Medicare and Medicade first. Leave private providers and insurance companies alone. Get rid of Tort reform and don't insure illegals. That would take care of everything. The government has made a mess of every program they touch – why would we let them have the remainder of our healthcare.

    6. Kelly, Pittsburgh says:

I initially supported the healthcare reform plan until I learned the truth about what Obama is trying to sneak in there…Let's face it-a large government run social program (think Welfare or Medicare) has never worked before and it won't work now. If you had some successful, ETHICAL business owners who know how to create a plan that is efficient, economically sound, equitable to those it serves, and produces positive outcomes, this plan might have a chance. It has no chance to be any of those things is Obama pushes for a decision on a second rate plan riddled with special interest policies in two weeks. Anyone with sense would know a plan like this should take good year or two to do it right.

    7. Patti, Louisiana says:

This is such a sad situation in our world when our elected president is acting and endorsing the legislation he has and proposes to. It makes me scared to live in this world if these healthcare objectives of Obama are put into place after all the information about how detrimental it will be to all Americans and their families has been shown and verbally dismissed as another coutry heading for crisis. What is going on? Wake up! Now! People need to start screaming now that they do NOT agree with this!! It is not a rebublican or democrat issue, it is a life issue.

    8. Richard, rural Texas says:

This President has even said he is he does not favor tort reform, that is coming from an attorney and is such a joke. The congress is attorney heavy so we can expect no real reduction of costs except reductions in services and payments to doctors. This man has been in office only 6 months and he has told more lies in that time than any president in history. Nothing constructive will ever be done by the federal governmnet.

    9. LM Kelly says:

My mother would have been put to death under Obama care as she was 79 years old at the time of her subdural hematoma. Like he said give the mother a pain pill (why didn't he just say give her a pill to euthanize her) to the daughter of the 105 year old that had a pace maker at 100. People wake up as you too if lucky enough will be old and someone else will decide when your time is up. It is real and I will not accept this decision. Remember these "idiots" work for us!!!

    10. bstall, Lebanon, OH says:

We can all stop this. I am currently circulating this letter in 3 counties in OH IN ADDITION to calling each member of the Committee on Energy & Commerce in House, and members of Committe on Finance & Healthcare in Senate. We can save this country from Obamacare! As follows:W A K E U P A M E R I C A !!!

Just recently, we saw Obama pushing healthcare reform on TV. He’s starting to

lose the battle on this because too many Americans know government-run anything

is bad. I can tell you from a personal standpoint (I work in the healthcare

industry as a nurse), that he is a liar – a LIAR! The bill currently being

considered in the House includes employer mandates. These mandates require

employers to pay higher taxes if they do not offer health insurance, or if they

offer it, but have employees who decline it and instead use the government

system. This is called punishing small businesses, who will understandably not

be able to expand and hire more workers, and will cause further loss of jobs.

Advocates claim the “rich” will bear the burden of health coverage. However,

the Congressional Budget Office reported that ordinary workers, nor their

employers, will ultimately bear the full cost of any reforms that make health

insurance more expensive for employers. Employers will be forced to cut wages

to make up the difference, or lay off workers.

There is no such thing as FREE healthcare! You and I will pay and pay BIG in

more ways than one. The employer mandate’s burden would fall primarily on

lower-income and less-skilled workers who do not currently have health coverage.

The House version would force these workers to take the equivalent of an 8% pay

cut for employees such as those earning $10/hr. (full time). On July 24th, the

federal min. wage will rise to $7.25/hr. Employers cannot legally take the full

cost of the employer mandate PENALTY (tax) out of the paychecks of anyone

earning close to this minimum. A result of this will be fewer jobs and layoffs

from small businesses who cannot afford to expand their businesses due to the

added healthcare tax. If you understand how our economy works, this is very bad

for our overall economy. And pushing this reform is criminal in a deep

recession. We already have double-digit unemployment in too many states.

Obama’s plan for huge government growth will take away our ability to choose.

Just think, a big government bureaucracy will be created with unelected

bureaucrats deciding whether you should receive a life-saving treatment or not.

Whether you can continue to receive a certain medication or not. Our healthcare

will be RATIONED! They will actually have power over life and death. Abortions

on demand with no parental notification or restrictions are in this bill that

will be totally funded by taxpayers. And seniors/baby boomers should worry that

some bureaucrat in Washington will deny life-saving or life-extendi ng medical

treatment based on the fact that you are not of “prime” age. A centralized

databank will be set up in Washington with all of your PRIVATE healthcare

      information.

When Obama says all Americans should have access to healthcare, I can tell you

definitively they ALREADY DO. It’s called Medicare/Medicaid, and in our

healthcare facility, we do not turn anyone away, even illegals. As a nurse, I

carry personal liability insurance as well as physicians and other healthcare

workers. Tort reform would drastically reduce healthcare costs for all

Americans, but getting a bill like that passed is nearly impossible with too

many trial lawyers giving vast amounts of campaign money to politicians, and the

presidency. However, some government oversight would be helpful in controlling

the cost of insurance. We need to maintain our freedom of choice when it comes

to very basic and personal decisions regarding our own individual healthcare.

We have a modicum of hope of defeating this measure – in the House. Many Dems

in the House are balking because so many Americans are now aware of this grab

for government control and have been burning up their phones with angry voices.

This bill is being rushed without being read by congress and the American

people. WHY? This is more than disturbing!

I have never worked for a party, and personally, I despise politics and

politicians. I love my God, family, country (in that order) and feel compelled

to do something. That is why I’m writing and sending this to you, my neighbors

and friends. Please pass this on to your family, friends, co-workers as I am

doing. Also, e-mail, fax, or call your House and Senate representatives. The

Committee on Energy and Commerce has stalled this bill for now, but Obama, Rahm

Emmanuel, Pelosi and other radical leftists are putting immense pressure on

these Dems in the House. WE NEED TO PUSH BACK!!! The number for the Committee

on Energy & Commerce is 202-225-2927. We have the best healthcare system in the

world and freedom to choose. Stop this bill! Keep the pressure on – call as

many congressmen you can and more than once/week. Also, please pray –

individually, in groups, prayer chains. God Bless America!!

    12. Caroline, Tucson, AZ says:

I am going to be 72 and worked since age 14. I am not in favor of giving my earned Medicare Dollars to illegals and those who have not worked for their Medicare. They will also make abortion a part of the program. Sterilize them after the first abortion. This is stealing my hard earned money. Plain stealing my Health Care. This is a moral issue.

    13. Thomas, Sackets Harb says:

We are about two steps away from a total dictatorship in this country, and this health care bill is one of the steps. Waxman-Markey is probably the other. If the health bill, Waxman, and card check all pass, the American way of life, as we have known it for the last one hundred years – will be over. If they get this stuff through, the government will have enough power to direct every aspect of your life. There will be communist-like production quotas (state/worker owned automobiles) and eventually, rationing of purchases and food. It is our last hope to stop this machine NOW.

    14. Lynn B. DeSpain says:

Obama only has one fact in his life, and that is he will stop at nothing to get what he wants. So beware America, be aware!

    15. Claude Cornell says:

Well, we got what we asked for. He was well known for his liberal ideas when he was in the Senate. But voters ignored what he stood for and voted for him anyway. Down through the years we have generally kept the hard left liberals out of the presidency. But American voters always seem to have short memories and every once in a while

they have to suffer for that. Now is one of those times.

    16. Loretta , Colorado says:

Devastating to have politicians make healthcare decisions! Obama doesn't know, what he doesn't know. His statement that a person having an asthma attack need not go to an emergency room because all he needs is an enhaler could be an example of healthcare decisions in Obamacare!!!

    17. Nan,wheaton IL says:

People hate war because of the unnecessary deaths but why is it ok to kill our elderly by not providing them adequate health care in their old age. Is it ok for some commssion in Washington DC to determine at what age they are no longer valuable because they cost too much?

    18. John Burdick, Glendo says:

I really agree with Edwin. The president, his family, congress, and all their staff should be the first to be forced into the health care plan. That would be showing real leadership and not just saying "I have great healthcare and so does congress", as Obama stated. How's that for "do as I say, not what I do"

    19. Dune Sleeper, Baltim says:

King Obama wants to change America as we know it. He has nothing but contempt for America. He apologizes to the world for being American. He doesn't mind broadcasting his Muslim heritage though, although he denied that throughout his campaign. He ought to be deported.

      Quotes From Barack Obama Books

"I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."

"There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white."-Truth!

"It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names."

"I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, Dubois and Mandela."
