  • Morning Bell: Obama Rhetoric vs Health Care Reality

Campaigning for his health care plan yesterday, President Barack Obama told a Green Bay, Wisconsin audience: “Right now a number of my Republican friends have said, ‘We can’t support anything with a public option.’ It’s not clear that it’s based on any evidence as much as it is their thinking, their fear, that somehow once you have a public plan that government will take over the entire health care system.” In fact, the opposite is true. It is President Obama who is operating on rhetoric without any evidence to back up his claims. Consider the following four themes crucial to Obama’s argument:

    1. You will be able to keep your doctor and health insurance if you want.
On the contrary, an independent analysis has shown that up to 119 million Americans could lose the coverage they have today under a Medicare-like public plan. The whole notion that a public plan would help increase competition defies common sense. For one thing, the government cannot create a level playing field between its own plan and private plans. It would be like an umpire at a baseball game also fielding a team. The playing field will always tilt towards the government plan that would eventually run out. And that is the whole point of the public plan. Just ask public plan architect Jacob Hacker: “Someone once said to me this is a Trojan Horse for single-payer, and I said, well it’s not a Trojan Horse, right? It’s just right there.”

    2. You will have the choice of buying health coverage that is similar to the plan available to members of Congress.
During the campaign, President Obama continued to tell people that his plan would give the same coverage offered to Members of Congress through the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program (FEHBP). First, there is no public plan in FEBHP. Second, there is no “one-size-fits-all plan” in FEBHP. The plans offered vary by price, benefit and region. As a matter of fact there are over 250 plans offered through FEBHP including at least a dozen national plans that are available wherever you live. Under the President’s planned version of an “exchange” and detailed in congressional plans, the federal government would have unprecedented control over the type of coverage Americans can buy, resulting in a “one-size-fits-all” federal standard which would limit choices for families and weaken incentives for insurers to compete for enrollees based on value.

    3. No government bureaucrat will second-guess decisions about your care.
Nobody wants to get between a person and their doctor, yet President Obama wants to establish a Federal Health Board — a Supreme Court of health care that would micromanage the practice of medicine through “best practices” and “comparative effectiveness.” Ironically, the examples the President pointed out yesterday of high-quality, low-cost care systems would probably not exist today had government been involved in them. The federal bureaucracy would destroy innovation and change would be slow to come by. So, in twenty years the American health care system would be stuck (again) in an outdated 2000 health care model.

    4. American families will save money.
The President’s health plan is estimated to cost $1.6 trillion over 10 years. He plans to pay for some of it with “savings.” Unfortunately, these “savings” are unproven and untested. Even the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) – the scorekeeper for cost and savings – doesn’t appear to have much faith in these savings. And what has been the reaction from the left in Congress? Instead of embracing objective evidence on health care reform, they are trying to find ways around it, with some in Congress threatening to scrap the CBO’s cost estimate of the Obama plan and instead go with the White House’s own cost estimates.

Closing his remarks yesterday, President Obama said: “To those who criticize our efforts, I ask, “What is the alternative? What else do we say to all those families who now spend more on health care than housing or food?” There is an alternative. A patient centered alternative that keeps health care decisions between doctors and patients instead of centralizing power in Washington. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) has a bill, the Patient’s Choice Act, and he recently took questions from Americans across the country on a 45 minute conference call. Listen to what real health care reform sounds like, here.

    1. MAS1916 - Denver, CO says:

      Obama's deceit is transparent.

The President is smart enough to understand that creation of a health insurance coverage system that will use government influence to reduce costs will drive existing providers out of business. This has to be His intent. He can then use the federal government power to take over these private firms should He choose.

The cost is unimaginable. Not only providing for illegal alien coverage, this plan will cover all sorts of additional services based on whatever whim Pelosi or the next Speaker wants to see included. The expense will make the Stimulus look small.

There is a great deal to be afraid of. Should Obama get his plan through Congress, it will be very, very difficult to make health care work again.

How do we stop this out of control train wreck? It sure seems like we are getting the change Obama promised if he gets what he wants the United States will be changed OK and not for the good. How can one man with a agenda destroy the greatest nation that God has ever created How?

    4. Mike Pryor, Lake Zur says:

Todays Morning Bell has Obama's health plan cost estimated at $1.6 trillion over 10 years. On your 6/10/09 Morning Bell, the "PAYGO" article had Obama's health plan cost estimated at over $6 trillion over 10 years. Which is correct, or where is the discrepancy?

    5. Christopher Popham S says:

Once again–THERE IS a clear and viable alternative to nationalizing our health care system. It is called the Alexander McGee Medical

Plan and it or some derivative of it, with modest

oversight by the government, could be the answer.

The AMA will not support government control of

our health care system and most Americans are against it. Even Nancy Pelosi argues that the Senate will not pass such legislation without

      a public referendum.

Why do we not hear the alarm that the Government can not compete with the private sector… and it should go without saying that they can't own a private company, competing with other private companies.

Obama's Health Care is government competing with the private sector… or more truthfully destroying the industry so it can be nationalized.

Government ownership of GM. Why don't the suppliers who are not getting paid for parts and services already provided get the ownership stake in GM? The suppliers and vendors will be barred by Bankruptcy laws from collecting what is owed them, while Obama is taking the ownership stake in GM. The fleecing of America.

Who needs enemies with a President like Obama? He treats our enemies better than he treats his own people… then again, maybe he is not one of us.

      Obama’s Own ‘Firing’ Gate

Look who's firing gov't employees "for political reasons" now!

Posted by Warner Todd Huston (Profile)

Friday, June 12th at 10:02AM EDT

Remember the hue and cry that went up when President Bush fired some U.S. attorneys in 2006? Oh, the left was beside itself about how eeeevil it was that Bush was to fire so many U.S. Attorneys… even though he had the authority to do so. Charges that the firings were made for “political reasons” were thrown about and Congressional Democrats clamored for new laws and the head of Bush’s Attorney General on a pike.

Well, last night, clearly for political reasons, Barack Obama tried to fire AmeriCorps inspector general, Gerald Walpin. Not only is it for strictly political reasons (Short take: “the AmeriCorps IG accuses prominent Obama supporter of misusing AmeriCorps grant money. Prominent Obama supporter has to pay back more than $400,000 of that grant money. Obama fires AmeriCorps IG.”) but Obama does not have the authority to summarily dismiss an IG as he tried to do last night.

Will the left ring the claxon clang of how illegitimate the president’s actions are this time? Should we hold our breath?

Last night, Obama’s office sent a terse note to IG Walpin stating that he had one hour to resign or he’d be fired. Walpin alerted Congress and asked what he should do because he knew that his position wasn’t solely at the discretion of the president. He knew that he answered to both the president and Congress.

So, what is this Inspector General position, how does it work? To answer that we go to Byron York’s piece in the Washington Examiner.

Inspectors General are part of every federal department. They are given the responsibility of independently investigating allegations of waste, fraud, and corruption in the government, without fear of interference by political appointees or the White House. Last year Congress passed the Inspectors General Reform Act, which added new protections for IGs, including a measure requiring the president to give Congress 30 days prior notice before dismissing an IG. The president must also give Congress an explanation of why the action is needed. Then-Sen. Barack Obama was one of the co-sponsors of the Act.

Notice that York reports that Obama is supposed to give a 30 day notice to Congress before an IG is removed? Yet, last night in what should be seen as an entirely arrogant move, Obama tried to fire an IG not with 30 days notice, but one hours notice!

According to York, it has also been pretty much assured that this firing was for political purposes, too.

More information now, from the Associated Press. The White House is going ahead with firing Walpin. The firing apparently stems from Walpin’s investigation of a non-profit group, St. HOPE Academy, run by Kevin Johnson, the former NBA star who is now mayor of Sacramento, California (and a big Obama supporter). “[Walpin] found that Johnson, a former all-star point guard for the Phoenix Suns, had used AmeriCorps grants to pay volunteers to engage in school-board political activities, run personal errands for Johnson and even wash his car,” the AP reports. In April, the U.S. attorney declined to file any criminal charges in the matter and criticized Walpin’s investigation. But at the same time Johnson and St. HOPE agreed to repay about half of the $850,000 it had received from AmeriCorps.

Bottom line: The AmeriCorps IG accuses prominent Obama supporter of misusing AmeriCorps grant money. Prominent Obama supporter has to pay back more than $400,000 of that grant money. Obama fires AmeriCorps IG.

Here is some more background on the misuse of AmeriCorps funds that York was referring to.

Obama is perpetrating a purely illicit action by trying to fire this IG without following the rules and without consulting with Congress. In fact this is worse than Bush’s firings of the U.S. attorneys in 2006 because in that case, Bush at least had the authority to do so — whether it was a good political move or not. Here, it seems Obama clearly does not have such authority.

I’d say that this is a supremely arrogant move on Obama’s part. Will he be called on it?

(It should also be noted that both Carter and Clinton fired many U.S. attorneys in their day. Clinton fired all of his at one time during his tenure in the White House.)

    10. catherine deanni Kea says:

What people do not understand is Obama & special interest want everyone in American to have healthcare. That means 22million if not more illegals will get healthcare. Many states who are santuary cities want this because they are going broke providing healthcare to there illegals, So they want the rest of the country to chip in & pay for them. So they can keep there cheap labor, get donations & votes from the Spanish special interests. Cailfornia is spending 9billion dollars a year for illegals, New York is spending 4 to 5 billion, New Jersey is spending 2 to 4 billion. All these states are going broke.

    11. Richard Cancemi, Ar says:

Obama is an egomaniac, a narcissist, a pathological liar, a disgrace as a president, a traitor to this Country and the Constitution, to say the least!

      He needs to be impeached!!!

    12. Sandy McAllister, MI says:

Obama has now been in office 5 months, and it is evident he would rather be out and about, than at the White House…which by the way, he slipped at one point and referred to it as "my house". Has there been any documentation on the number of miles flown with Air Force 1 and all the support planes that accompanies him on these jaunts? Any estimated costs to 'we the people', ie. taxpayers?

      Thank you

    13. Gail Frankie Dayt says:

Here we go again, making another position so the President can appoint another Czar to control our lives. If he keeps this up we are going to be like Russia over thirty-years ago a communist country.

What he does not tell you is low-income families get medical coverage through welfare which we already pay for.

My question is how is he going to pay for this?

He has alread run our country into the ground by his spending practices and when our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have to pay the bill there won't be any money left over for this medical program he wants to put in place, so medical care will be compromised for the elderly and those in the most need.

He certainly has not done his research or talked to the common people from countries that have socialized medicine and the problems they have getting proper medical care. Basically he just does not give a darn as long as it does not touch his family. What he doesn't realize is that somewhere down the line it will touch his family.

Here is a man who talks out of two sides of his mouth. He will do away with our privitized health care and take control just as he has done with the automakers and our banking system (banks who want to pay back the money and can't because he won't let them).

All I can say is people wake up and take a good hard look at what is happening to our country and your freedoms.

    14. sandy arizona says:

Amazing, while we give totally free health care to illegals via the emergency room, my senator stated, regardless of your wishes, we will enact national health care and of course Americans will pay. Take look at the bonuses paid to Medicare officials in Govt every year and see where our dollars are going. They have a hefty salary, including benefits and get bonuses each year.

    15. Jonathan Seid, Willi says:

He's a Chicago politician selling us a snake oil treatment.

It'll be new and improved healthcare for every man, woman and children.

It'll cost us $One-trillion-dollars over 10- years which means to me it will cost us more than his smiling faced estimate yesterday. Here comes the Congress.

Haven't they done a splendid job with Medicaire, Medicaid, Social Security, AMTRAK and the US Post Office? What a farce these clowns have become.

    16. David Sayers, NC says:

Here,Here Richard from Tx. All this commie, socialist, marxist lying thug wants is to be in control of everything and everybody forever.

Everytime the government is in control of anything, they run it into the ground. With obama

in charge and all his lackys including the state run media and congress, he is going to get away with it. Unless we stop him by every legal means possible. So far, all that he has done has been absolutely moronic and in a sense borders on treason. If carrying a petition door to door will help start the impeachment process, sign me up. Lets get this demogorgon out as soon as possible,we can't afford not to. And to komrade Ken, please, please wake up.

    17. Roy Callahan says:

I understand the various arguments, but I'd like to know where in the Constitution of this United States does it say the federal government is responsible for our health care?

    18. Ben C, Ann Arbor, MI says:

One of the principles of marketing is to create a sense of urgency. Obama has repeatidly done this, not the least of which was his entitlement budget. Now with health care the world will come to an end if we don't pass his legislation within the year. He is not a stupid man. He must realize that most will see through the smoke and mirrors of promises and stop his agenda. At this point it is beginning to happen so we will see a concerted effort to pass his health care agenda. Its his actions, not words that worry me. Bowing to a Mulsim King and displaying the soles of his shoes to an Isreali. There my friends is his true nature. Obama's promises as summarized by Ken from Las Vegas are just a ploy.

    19. Penny, IN says:

So how are we going to unite the citizens of this country to get this man impeached? Every day we dont is wasted.

    20. jim smith new york says:

It's hard to believe that we don't have lawyers who recognize the law breaking going on in this administration. Make him accountable, no teleprompter, no Axelrod ventriloquism, no Emanuel leg breaking. The time is NOW!

    21. Joe White, Quinton T says:

Some may say that we are on the "road to Serfdom"- a la von Hayek…but, many many of us will not go willingly and will revolt….just wait, it is coming………

    22. Rich, Fayetteville N says:

Has everyone in Washington gone mad? They all need to be fired. I cannot believe the public continues to re-elect these fools. 1.6 trillion for healthcare is not free healthcare. Is obama or congress paying for this out of their personal wealth? Are the American people that nieve to think this is free.

We all need to take personal responsibility for ourselves. With this health care people do not realize, government will have the final say if you will either get the healthcare or be put on a waiting list you will be left to die.

We need government out of our lives.

they are mad. This can only be the beginning of united socialist states of america under comrade obama and his gang of socialist liberals. I don't know about you folks but this has to stop. If the Republicans we elected would just stop voting on all these issues and make it the democrats we the people will know who is to blame without listening to all their spin all the time.I have healthcare through my employer and therefore will not be elgible for the czars plan. The real kicker is we all get to pay for the insurance for those who do not have it as well as our own insurance. So much for not raising the tax on the middle income and it will probably raise the costs of goods and services in the health care field to cover their losses. This is a government that is out of control and we better get them out of office in 2010 before they can do any more damage than they already have. By the way have we become a country of gutless indivduals who are afraid to confront them on the issues or are we just lazy?????????

    25. Marleah, Canad says:

Listen folks. You are just naive if you think government health plan is free. I live in Canada due to job transfer(a born US citizen) and the taxes are outrageous. The government sponsored plan doesn't even cover things that people in the US are used to their insurance company covering such as prescription meds, physical or other therapy services, etc. So, in order to cover those things, my family still pays a $300 per month premium. Plus all of the outrageous taxes. Other "BEWARES": who is going to keep the government accountable to give premium care to you? Right now, patients or clients keep providers accountable. Take that word private away and you have no one interested in accountability! Finally, what you end up giving away is a freedom of self if you give your life over to the government. They get the opportunity to decide what treatments you can and cannot have. Government could then decide when you live and when you die. Is that what everyone really wants? Don't let this money thing fool you. It's all a sham. Consider that you are more important than the government. Let's find alternative ways to reduce our health care costs. But, let's not give in to government!

    26. Nelia, AZ says:

It could be Obama's haste to enact as many mandates as possible has something to do with his fear of a grand upset in the 2010 Election. We need statespersons, not politicians leading this nation – people who actually care and listen to their constituents. Who do we replace? Plan carefully.

    27. Corsair310 says:

    28. Corsair310 Sarahsvil says:

National Health Care: Has anyone asked if the GOV. says sweets are bad for you and maybe hazardous to your health! Then what are they going to do with responsible gun owners? Think about it!!!!!

    29. Katie Beth, OH says:

I work in community mental health and have had to deal with government run programs my entire career. In one job, as a clinical auditor, I was able to see what kind of fraud and waste there is in the programs already available (i.e. Medicaid, Medicare, etc.) If there truly is a need for the government to cover more people, the first thing the government could do would be to truly monitor these programs. Don't put more water(money) in a bucket (government medical program) until you've patched all of the holes. Right now it looks like a rusty sieve.

I have friends from various countries where the government runs the health care. Want to know how I met them? They were here in this country to get medical treatment…they couldn't wait (safely) for their names to come up on the various lists. I pray every day that I won't find myself in some foreign country hoping to get needed health care because the care in the U.S. has gone the way of the dodo.

      Honorable Representative Coble,

Why is Mr. Obama spending our tax dollars so fast?Simple, he is trying to do as much as he can while his popularity is still high. However, they are smart enough to read all of the polls. They show his favorable rating about 60%, however, most Americans polled wants; 1) smaller government, 2) stop the bailouts, 3) stop the government from trying to run business’s, and 4) lower taxes. If I recall they said the same at the Tea Parties but the left laughed and said it was racially motivated. Hopefully this thought subsided with the California vote in California last week. TEAM Obama is quickly finding he needs to have substance to back his rhetoric. Clear examples is how Mr. Cheney took him to the wood shed regarding Enhance Interrogation.

So now the GMC and Judge Sotomayor must be addressed ASAP before his approval rates drop, which they will soon.

Senator Leahy should be ashamed of his recent actions to start the Judge Sotomayor hearings next month and not having consulted with his Republican counterpart!! The DNC has touted her as having more judicial experience than any other justice before they were approved to the Supreme Court, and she had heard over 36,000 cases. If this is the truth more time will be needed to thoroughly review her cases, writings, and public comments. There are several things she has spoken on which no judge should make, however, time will be needed to determine if her comments bled over into her court judgment, this would be fair for all.

Senator Leahy this is a permanent appointment and there is no provision to appeal their decisions. Please keep in mind you work for us and not us for you. I respectfully request you talk with your Republican counterpart and agree on how much time would be appropriate to use and be fair to the Honorable Judge Sotomayor and the country?

These initiatives are too drastic to employ nationwide. If they want to see how these would work, use a pilot program in a few select states and/or locations before they destroy the country with sweeping, poorly-designed efforts based upon assumptions. Too much at risk. And, to be fair, do these pilots for a sufficent period of time to flush out the problems (there will be problems), maybe 2 years. Finally, do these in states and cities where Obama won the majority of votes; after all, they wanted this guy and his game, so let them put their money (and health) where their vote is.

Let's title the episode "We the People???"

    41. Merrill B, Las Vegas says:

To MAS1916, Obama intends to take over all private insurances programs. He also plans to cut Medicare benefits (or at least, will change it completely, to our detriment). Social Security benefits are next, and those of us who are retired, a single payor system will kill us off at a much higher rate than it is doing now.

To Ken in Las Vegas: Have some more kool-aid Ken. You will be signed up automatically if Obama gets this program through, and he will because he will have the backing of the liberal democrats in Congress and the Senate (including our own Harry Reid). You might want to review Marleah's comments on the Canadian System of Health Care. Obama's plan is a fairy tale. I wonder how long if will take for his voters to wake up to the kind of change he envisions for the US. Probably, not until it will take a civil war to correct the mess. That would be really disastrous for our great nation!!

FDR promised everyone that if they worked hard and paid into the "social security lockbox" that they would have plenty of money to retire and enjoy their old age. I call that the GREAT LIE instead of the great society. My Dad was a big Dem and is now greatly disappointed that he is 74 and needs to continue working. I feel terrible for him and help as much as I can.

The point is…he believed a man he admired…FDR. And when it came time to collect on the promise… $813 per month. Your healthcare is now being promised for free and it will be great. Another Dem promising white clouds, rainbows and doves…this will go bad just like everything else the libs do. We are on our way to the same results of the USSR…financial collapse and spliting into multiple state/regions. Good Luck! I will be fine and hope some of you will be also.

My name is Carolyn Troiano, and I need help going after Obama for a major Free Speech violation. He is violating my First Amendment right to free speech by trying to prevent me from voicing my opinions on a tax-deductible contribution supported internet site.

If you go to My.BarackObama.com, a website funded by tax-deductible money, you will see how they’ve set up tools and other resources to help people push the Obama agenda forward – the topic du jour is healthcare reform. People are told to create and attend events that are supportive of Obama. This is how they stole the election.

So to turn the tables, I went on the site and created my own event, a “GIGANTIC TEA PARTY” up on Long Island in my hometown of Merrick.

I set this up as a “Take Back Our America” event, and spread the WEALTH (Watch Every American Learn about Healthcare reform) like the Tea Parties of late, and included posted a call for all like-minded citizens to join me. All of the information is at my website:

The Obama webmaster responded by email saying my words were disrespectful, and that they had taken my event off the website.

The warning stated that this was a one-time warning, and if I did this again, I would have my access to the website taken away.

So what’s a girl to do? Create another event. This time it’s in Chesterfield, VA, this coming Saturday, June 20th, at my home or in spirit with me, and I made sure there is room for 1 billion people, in case those disgruntled Iranian voters want to revolt and join our cause too.

I led the charge to taking back America with a simple statement to the President –

“Mr. Obama, tear down that firewall!”

That’s my motto, and I’m taking this as far as I possibly can. Ronald Reagan must be turning over in his grave!

I’m seeking your help to give some visibility to this fight and let the Obama dictatorship know we will not stand idly by while our own tax dollars continue to be squandered on his Socialist agenda.

So let me know if you can help, and if you have any suggestions for ramping this up and getting all Americans to understand what’s going on here. Most have no clue.

Thanks for your time and attention!

The Heritage Foundation has a great site. I disagree with many of their premises but it is a place I can go to get a well thought out logical development of the conservative concepts. Thank you.

The blog however… my, my. OK Health Care.

The current debate (within the thinking class) concerns the partitioning (rationing) of the health services that are available to American society. They are rationed now, have always been and will always be. Current "rationing" is related to income level, location, availability etc. etc.

Some of us believe that all Americans deserve to be able to access care when there bodies are broken, some do not, if I have properly interpreted the comments.

Pretty much all Americans can get health care right now when they need it. I don't think anyone will be refused care if they show up at an emergency room with a broken arm. It will be set. I certainly do not know a physician (and I know several) that will refuse to sew up a 10 yr old with a lacerated hand whether or not they "can pay." This is America, we are a generous people (mostly), we will take care of our own.

The perceived problem is that the current system does not officially cover everyone, many services and people are denied coverage by the insurance company (I do not know anyone that does not have a story) and it is expensive! We pay far more for medical care than any other industrialized nation and the end result (by many many independent evaluations) is not as good as the countries that pay far less.

We just want a decent bang for the buck, and we want everyone covered on some sort of plan. Yes, there are the disaster stories from the "socialist" systems (by those who do not understand definition of the word), and from the private insurance system. So what. Every system has its problems.

The statistical data on the US system make us look like idiots, that's all. I know of no one (personally) that would prefer the American system over their own countries. Yes, I hear the stories, but they do not fit with my observations, so I dig deeper. For every disaster on one side I can document one on the other side which renders this whole style of discussion useless. Lets get on topic, and the topic is NOT Obama, or socialism, or "liberal idiots." It is health care!

So, what were we discussing again?

      Sincerely, Michael Gerety
