  • Morning Bell: A Pro-Growth, Pro-Nuclear, Energy Alternative

Last month, the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis released a study of the Waxman-Markey energy tax bill showing that by 2035 it would raise electricity rates 90 percent, reduce aggregate gross domestic product (GDP) by $7.4 trillion, and destroy over 1,900,000 jobs. The Natural Resources Defense Council recently responded with a critique of our analysis, claiming we “concealed” the fact that GDP would actually grow under the Waxman-Markey bill.

This is just plain false. Of course the U.S. economy would still grow under Waxman-Markey… it will just grow a lot slower (and produce a lot fewer jobs) than it would have otherwise. The question decision-makers must face when considering any change in policy is: What are we sacrificing when we choose one action over its alternative? In economics, this basic concept is called “opportunity cost.” But the NRDC explicitly urges readers to ignore fundamental economic thinking: “Do not accept a ‘how much less GDP is relative to no policy’ answer.”

That is not even the most galling aspect of their critique. The NRDC then goes on to cite the Environmental Protection Agency’s lower cost estimates as evidence that the CDA’s estimates are too high. But to keep their cost estimates so low, the EPA study assumes a doubling of nuclear power by 2035 … an assumption the NRDC has previously attacked! Apparently, audacity is contagious on the left.

The Waxman-Markey bill is nothing more than an anti-growth bailout for corporations and a huge tax on consumers. Fortunately, there is an alternative. Yesterday, House conservatives unveiled the American Energy Act which unshackles America’s energy producers by allowing energy exploration in Alaska’s North Slope, leasing of oil and natural gas fields in the outer continental shelf, and expediting legal challenges to energy development projects. Most importantly, it makes key policy changes that will revive our domestic nuclear industry, including:

    • Providing an efficient, predictable, and expedited pathway to permitting new reactors;
    • Suspending tariffs on imported reactor components;
    • Providing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) the authority to complete its review of the Yucca Mountain repository;
    • Repealing the artificial limitations on Yucca Mountain’s capacity; and
    • Providing an avenue to start recycling spent nuclear fuel in the U.S.

Unlike the massive new energy tax that President Barack Obama has personally admitted would lead energy prices to skyrocket, creating a regulatory framework that will revive our domestic nuclear industry will create thousands of high paying construction and engineering jobs as well as produce cleaner, cheaper energy for the rest of our economy.

what can we do to stop the destruction of our country?

    2. Eugene Hoffman, Hous says:

We already have safe, and tested nuclear power plants; they are on ships and submarines: they work. It seems to me that these plants are compact enough to be used as supplements to feed the grids and would increase efficiency while lowering cost.

    3. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

We the people of the USA have enjoyed the highest standard of living at the most reasonable costs in the entire world. Somehow the idiot leftists believe we should feel guilty about it. Why???

Our form of government and economic system have provided these opportunities for all to use for our own individual benefit as well as the country as a whole.

Liberal democrat-socialists think this is wrong and the American system must be destroyed. Every socialist-based program that the liberals have instituted has had "unintended"? consequences that backfire.

I am convinced this Administration, headed by Obama, wants to dismantle America to make it into a "Brave New World" wherein individuality ceases to exist and we are all gathered into a "collective" slavery to the State!

America, with its citizens, is being pillaged and raped by imbecilic traitors!

    5. William Cole - Texas says:

Spent 37 years in the power generation business and spending the last 30 of those years watching the expansion of the nuclear side of the business dwindle, it troubles me that brown outs and black outs are in our future because the EPA and the NRC along with the environmental activists/extreemists have acted in concert to virtually eliminate permits to build such plants. From the onset of seeking permits to actually producing nuclear energy is at least a 10 year process. The price of clean burning natural gas is so expensive, little generation is made from burning natural gas. Coal fired plants are the current target for legislating out of operation so as mentioned earlier, get ready to endure periods without power, at any price. Even the Socialist Gov't of France realized many years ago that nuclear is what is needed. Not saying we need to mimic the French in all ways but their power system is certainly a model that other countries should mimic. If you are thinking of renewable sources, they are clean but rely on nature to play it's role. Therefore, all renewable sources have to be backed up by conventional generators.

    6. Normca says:

This administration's energy policy is non existent. I can just see the president telling King Abdulah, without the media in the room, to cut production so prices rise. [This on the way to Fiat size cars.] This cannot be put past Obama, who told Canada we won't change the free trade agreements while criticizing them as candidate. Meanwhile no more drilling and no experimentation on other sources of energy. No coal, no nuclear. And we on the left coast are now paying $3.00 per gallon [on the way to $4 to $5]. The big question: is the price going up slow enough for the incompetent in the

white house ? George Bush developed an energy policy, however it was not acceptable to the AGores of the country. President Bush actually consulted with the energy providers. Imagine developing policy in conjunction with major stakeholders, like the oil and gas industry and the auto dealers association.

    7. Loyd Reddig, Weather says:

Nuclear is fine and good. What do we do in the meanwhile? Natural Gas is the cleanest fuel we have for now. CNG powered vehicles could put Detroit and the Energy Sector back to work, without any government bailouts. Sell the coal to China, let them deal with the cost of the "carbon footprint" for a while.

    8. David Sayers, NC says:

The progressive socialist marxist are again proven to be just a bunch of lying frauds. We have seen this same act played over and over again, yet they are still in charge, why? Write, call and e-mail your congressman,no matter if they are democrat or republican, everday. Let these so called servants of the people know that you are watching them and taking great interest in what they are doing on a day to day basis. You also might want to mention that the people of this great land own the building they work in and they can be evicted. In addition, let Chairman Obama know that it's our house he is living in and assure him that his residence there is very temporary. It is time for term limits and to get rid of all the morons who are costing us so dearly. A socialist marxist state will only become a reality if we let it.

      DO WITH THE WASTE

    10. Bob R Geologist, Tuc says:

I still find it hard to believe that our late great country now seems determined to shoot itself in the foot over a vital component in our atmosphere. The carbon cycle should be in every high school text book. Without CO2 in our atmosphere there would be no plant or animal life on this planet. There is no rational way that C02 can be classified as pollution. There must be a requirement that only irrational people be hired by Gov't bureaus such as the EPA or to join Environmental groups. These people have allowed their passion to save the Earth destroy their brains. 32,000+ real US scientists, including myself, have committed ourselves to the FACT that you cannot control the weather curbing CO2. You are far more likely to ruin our country and its citizenry and earn their undying antipathy. I would expect a wholesale job loss of elected personnel, if not persecution for malfeasance.

    11. Layla, Europe says:

      Nuclear is STUPID!!

What about earthquakes or corrosion or even, sigh, terrorism, I ask you?!!

    12. Whicket Williams Kin says:

I heard on fox that somebody was going to try to get 100 nuclear power plants permited. T%his would save us, and it is clean nonpoluting. Please see if there is any way to get Nancy to allow this. If we can get Nancy to agree we will have energy for our children

    13. Lee-White Tanks AZ says:

Nuclear Power has long been recognized as the most economical way to meet the expanding energy needs of a vital and growing US economy. Not only directly but also as a inexpensive approach to a burgeoning Hydrogen based energy system.

The LEFT has also recognized this fact. That is precisely why every attempt at expanding our use of Nuclear Power has been viciously fought to a standstill. In the process literally thousands of rules, regulations, ordinances, restrictions, and other legal devices have been put in place that condemn any growth in this industry segment to the trash pile.

The LEFT does not want a rich and powerful United States. There is no way that their global ambitions can be realized with a "cheap energy" solution to future energy needs in the US. This is a fight for the very soul of the US AND IT CENTERS ON OUR ABILITY TO MAKE AND UTILIZE ABUNDANT AND REASONABLY PRICED ENERGY!! The entire AGW and Cap and Trade tax are mere skirmishes in this war. People are not being told the real underlying reasons for what The "O" and this administration are doing vis e vis the takeover a major segments of our economic engine.

Fast Track "Permitting" for Nuclear Construction is a pipe dream. Just as reducing or getting rid of restrictive import duties on this technology, and last but not least the removal of Harry Reid from the Nevada picture is not immediately likely.

The fact that the EPA is saying their cost models for the future rely on doubling the Nuclear output by 2035 would be laughable if it wasn't a reflection of monumental bureaucratic cynicism.

The Obama train must be derailed or I seriously doubt if our country will survive as anything that many of us will recognize.

It seems that every time I read one of these proposals, I come away believing them to be rational, specific and timely. All energy development has risks and for the environmentally insane, those risks can be managed. Calling the air we exhale a pollutant is patently nuts. Taken to a logical, but suicidal extreme, all of us are poisoning our environment. Maybe, one day, there will be a large, inefficient Federal agency that will determine who breathes and who doesn't.

    17. Mike, Hickory, NC says:

You know, I know, and other people around the world know that nuclear power is neither limited to "the bomb" nor so invariably and unalterably destructive that we must always seek to not only reduce but forever ban it from life on earth.

Not only that, but we also know that it is not possible to ever ban nuclear power from life on earth, including its' "waste materials" and their interaction and effects on each other, even if for no other reason than that embodied by the "engine and sustainer" of both all life on earth (including ours) and its' interaction with and effects upon the earth and its' environment, which is the Sun itself, which also owes its' very existence and resources to continue to nuclear energy.

All of this, and more, is added to by such facts among others as the fact that many people around the world already get a significant amount of such as electrical energy from nuclear power, including the French who get the majority of their power from nuclear power plants and populate the perennial favorite nation of American (Communist/Socialist) Leftists, France, which thus also betrays another major example of the hypocrisy of the notoriously "anti-nuclear energy" Left.

Plus, we also know that just because we may not have discovered and developed a number of effective, "environmentally friendly", and indeed economic ways of recycling and otherwise dealing with so-called "nuclear waste" does not mean we cannot ever do so, especially since we in the U.S. have indeed already done so with a number of other forms of what were once considered "useless/toxic waste" and we are already making efforts for the "recycling" of nuclear.

Of course, there is one "spoiler" to all of this, if we let it be so, which may be generational, in addition to Leftist (Communist/Socialist) government power and money-grabbing politicians and their Comrades, which is "First impressions are hard to overcome".

How so? Question: What was the world's first introduction to "nuclear power"? Answer: The atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in August of 1945, to prevent incomperably more bloodshed and death to end World War II. Question: Thus, what is the very first thing which comes to people's minds, including ours who know better about "nuclear power"? Answer: A "mushroom cloud" of destruction, such as that over Hiroshima in 1945. Question: Therefore also, what do some people use as if to "justify" being "anti" anything, including flying in airliners? Any of the incomperably few accidents which have happened, either ignoring or ignorant of the facts such as you're incomperably safer in an airliner than you are going to the store in your car.

So, such things may also be a "spoiler" to nuclear energy, if we let them, and even generational, if we let them, but it's a good thing we haven't let such things stop us, or the human race would have long since stagnated into extinction.

    18. Wallyblu, Zion, IL says:

The simple fact that everyone ignores about energy is that all the alternatives that are proposed, wind, nuclear and solar will only produce electricity. If all our electric needs were produced by these "alternitive sources" our need for oil would hardly change. We don't produce electicity with oil!

    19. Ben C, Ann Arbor, MI says:

The problem is not nuclear or fossil fuels. The problem is Obama. This is a masterful ploy to divert our attention to discuss areas of nonconsequence. Look at the big picture – look at what he is doing, not what he is saying. He is NOT a historian (his facts were wrong in Germany), he is NOT a business person or economist (nor are his staff – none could operate a candy store), he is NOT a military person (he doesn't even look at the soldiers he is saluting). Obama is a narcissist and enjoys being the center of attention. His agenda is clear – his goal is to change the world to his way of thinking (such as the apology tours and embracing our enemies). It includes governmental control of health care, banking, and industry. Yes,it will be a Brave New World where some are more equal than others. And when the damage has been done, he will be long gone from term limits (unless of course he tells Congress to change the law). We get stuck paying the bill.

    20. Phil Davis, Florida says:

There are a segment of those in power along with special interests groups that have set the stage to systematically destroy Capitalism and replace it with Socialism. There are polices coming out of Washington to do just that. This is why they make no sense. The only sense of it is the destruction of the American dream and replace it with Socialism; which does not work and never will. It is also a power grab; shredding the Constitution right in front of our eyes. Where is the Judicial Branch? Who are these people that just don't get it!

    21. Carol in az says:

Nuclear Power and the building of power plants has been systematically discouraged over the last two decades. We can blame any, or all leadership, during this time period, but it is all of us that share part of the blame for allowing this to happen.

The waste products in this industry produced, also in the nuclear medical industry(s) are not re-cycled and reuse, "spent fuel" as done in France.

Leadership will not spend the money in the USA to learn how to process, store, and reclaim "spent fuel."

The France system re-cycles almost 90% of nuclear waste. This system is very expensive for start-up costs. No one in the US wants to spend the money that it would take to develope such a system.

Our solution here, to this problem, is to bury it, in someones eles back yard.

My hope is that the current leadership will take it to the next level. It is my understanding that nuclear power plants are now being authorized to be built(5), in various parts of the US. One is currently being built in Citus County , FL. which is on the West Coast of FL.

The lead time for a nuke plant to come on-line is about five years.(correct me here if I'm wrong)

It is also my hope that many other options for energy as stated above will also be developed, as "talked about" finally by our current leaadership. We are best and brightest nation in world for technology and have changed the world up to now because of our leadershipin numerous areas. Certainly we must move forward in this direction for our national security as well as for the future of the world with inceasingly depleted resorces.

Also, has anyone notice that our gas prices are inceasing steadily ? We tend to have short-term memory here in the USA.

DADS ELECTRICITY GENERATION CONSISTED OF TWO DIESIL ENGINES THAT I FOUND RUSTING IN THE WEEDS. I ASKED WHAT THEY WERE AND HE TOLD ME THE STORY OF WHY THEY WERENT NEEDED ANYMORE.

WHEN THE ELECTRIC CO-OP STRUNG ITS WIRES THE DARKNESS WAS ROLLED BACK CREATING NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR EVERYBODY AND DISRUPTED THE LABOR ECONOMY THAT HAD AT ITS BASE SHARE CROPPING OR CLOSWE TO IT AND A SOCIAL CASTE SYSTEM OF THE REASONABLY WELL TO DO; EVEN IF EVERY ONE FROM LOWEST TO HIGHEST STILL HAD OUTHOUSES.NO ELECTRICITY FOR PUMPS YOU SEE.

ELECTRICITY AND POWER OPENED A WORLD UP AND ITS CONSTANCY WAS AN ARTICLE OF FAITH.

IN MY UNLETTERED AND UNFETTERED HILL BILLY MIND IT IS EVIL TO MAKE A POLITICAL GAME OF ENERGY IN THE GUISE OF SAVING THE WORLD. USING THE DARKNESS OF FALSEHOOD AS A SCREEN TO ACHIEVE AN ENERGY MONOPOLY AGAINST THE LIGHT OF WHAT IS TRUE ABOUT THE ENVIROMENTAL MOVEMENT AND ITS MOTIVATIONS.

I HAVE SCANT RESPECT FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS THE GOOD OLD DAYS AND A NEW GREEN REVOLUTION THAT HAS NEVER GOTTEN UP IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER AND HEADED FOR THE OUTHOUSE AND THINKS ITS JUST A GREAT IDEA.

GO FOR IT IF YOU WANT TOO BUT THIS HILL BILLY HAS NO USE FOR THE SIMPLE LIFE AND SUFFERS FOOLS WHO DO BADLY.

WHAT THE ADMINISTRATION IS ABOUT IS THE CREATION OF AN UNACCOUNTABLE AUTHORITY WITH MANY LEVELS AND SEEDED WITH PRIVATE STRONGHOLDS WHERE THE BUCK MAY BE PASSED TO ANY NUMBER OF CROOKED ACADEMICS AND SCIENTISTS.

THESE ARE NEEDED TO FORM A GREEK CHORUS BEHIND THE FALSE LOGIC OF TOTALATARIAN AUTHORITY AS IT TAKES THE STAGE AT INTERVAL AND EXPLAINS WHY THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND YOUR ALL POORER AND WHY WE NO LONGER BAKE ENOUGH PIES FOR EVERYBODY TO HAVE A SLICE WITHOUT A GREEN LECTURE.

WE SHOULD BE ABOUT CREATING ENERGY; NOT SOCIAL ENGINERING;BECAUSE THERE IS MONEY IN IT AND THERE FORE WORK TO BE DONE.

I THINK THAT ILL-TEMPERED FARMER AND THE REGULATORS OF THE GREATER GOOD ARE ABOUT THE SAME.WHAT HAPPENNED WITH THE ADVENT OF ELECTRICITY AND LIGHT AND THEN RADIO AND APPLIANCES WAS THAT PEOPLE BECAME DISTRACTED IN PURSUIT OF THEIR OWN ENDS AND LEFT THAT ALTAR UNTENDED.

I LIKE TO THINK IN A SMALL WAY MY FATHER CRACKED OPEN A WINDOW AND LET SOME AIR IN WHEN HE HIRED LOCALS AND PAID CASH WHEN HE DID THAT WASNT CONNECTED TO A SHARE AND CHANGED A BAD SITUATION FOR THE BETTER.THERE ARE MILLIONS WHO HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAKE REAL CHANGE AND PRODUCE REAL THINGS.

YOU GREEN LEFTY PEOPLE, JUST THINK A MINUTE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE ASKING PEOPLE TO DO. THAT IS BE LESS THAN THEY CAN BE. WHEN YOU WANT A RESTRICTIVE ENERGY DISTRIBUTION THAT DOES NOT FEEL THE NEED TO RESPECT PEOPLE AS SOMETHING OTHER THAN SERFS THAT NEED TO BE MANAGED IT IS ALL ABOUT CONTROL AND SKIMMING OFF THE GRAVY.

YOU HAVE TO LIE TO YOUR SELVES EVERY DAY TO PULL IT OFF.WHAT DOES THAT MAKE YOU IN THE END AND WHERE DOES IT LEAVE OUR COUNTRY IN THE END. HAVE WE COME THIS FAR TO BE A SECOND CLASS POWER WITH A NONSENSICAL GUILT COMPLEX WE STRUT EFORE OUR ENEMIES.

CONSERVATIVES, DONT BUT INTO THIS. IT IS LIKE ASKING A GIRL OUT AND STARTING YOUR PITCH WITH"YOU WOULDNT WANT TO GO OUT WITH ME WOULD YOU".NUCLEAR POWER IS THE BEST AND CHEAPEST AND MOST CAPABLE OF BRIDGING TOWARD NEW TECHNOLOGY AND ENERGY THAT WILL BIRTH IDEAS NOT YET THOUGHT OF.

IT IS COMMON SENSE AND I AM GLAD FOR MY HILL BILLY ROOTS AND MORE THAN GLAD I DONT THINK LIKE A TOP WATER. THATS WHAT WE REFERED TO CITY PEOPLE AND POLITICIANS AS AND I WILL ADD ADVOCATES OF FALSE PREMISE TO THAT LIST.

A TOP WATER IS AN ELEGANT MINNOW THAT LAYS ON THE SURFACE OF THE WATER AND AFFECTS A CROOKED BACK GIVING IT A STICK LIKE PROFILE FROM BELOW THAT ENABLES IT TO GRAB THE UNWARY IN A CLASSY FASHION AND THEN WITH GRACE RETURN TO ITS STATION FLOATING ABOVE EVERYTHING IN DISGUISE.

WHEN YOU LOOK UP AT ANTI- NUCLEAR CROWD HAVE A CARE WHAT YOUR BUYING THAT THEIR SELLING AND IN THIS CASE IF ITS NOT POWER THAT REFLECTS DEMAND AT MARKET PRICES AND YOUR POCKETS HAVE BEEN TURNED BY THE TRANSACTION, A TOPWATER SOMEWHERE IS PADDLING BACK TO THE SURFACE UNTIL HE GETS HUNGRY AGAIN.

Let us hope. This is about the first good news I have heard since 9/11 and I desperatly need some good news. I heard a guy from law enforcement say there was a very fine line between being a normal person expessing their right to free speech, and being investigated for being a terrorist. Now That is not good news. If we can get 100 nuclear power plants up and running in 10 years, we will have a prosperous country, where it will be possible to live a nice lifestyle without starving or freezing. Also, within ten years, maybe w2e will have developed hydrogen automobles, so we can stop using oil for that, which should have been done years ago, as the first hydrogen engine was invented in the 1890's in dallas, tx

    24. Whicket Williams Kin says:

    27. Mike Sheahen, Hickor says:

"If all our electric needs were produced by "alternative sources" our need for oil would hardly change".

Nothing shows more than homework not done.

The facts are, to start with, that in such as the stone age, man's energy sources for such as our warmth and cooking needs, etc, were such as surface combustibles (wood, etc); eventually we diversified those sources beyond such things and even replaced some of them with such as animal oils and coal (Note: Coal still fuels most of our power needs in the U.S, and the U.S. still has the overwhelming majority [and hundreds of years worth] of coal); we have since added to and, depending upon the application and/or discovery and developement, replaced with petroleum (oil) and petroleum distillates, plus other often seperate sources such as natural gas, etc, and we have since added to and either completely or partially replacing some (including petroleum and petroleum distillates) with other sources, (which certain people want to dismiss, etc), again depending upon application, and/or discovery and developement, such as nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal, and others.

      The bottom line is twofold:

      1. Not only has it has always behooved us, and continues to behoove us, to simultaneously make available, diversify, and replace sources of energy, but we have always eventually done so, and must again eventually do so.

      2. Meanwhile, especially if we in the U.S. are serious about "energy independence", such as ending our being so dependant upon such as Middle Eastern regimes for such as oil and/or natural gas, as well as not totally and/or even greatly depending upon any one source of energy such as coal, that means we'd better simultaneously access and develope every one of our own sources of them (including ANWAR and offshore [which in fact would, as much as certain people deny it, help end our being so dependant on foreign sources), while also developing nuclear, solar, and wind, etc.

    31. Leslie, Washington, says:

The problem with nuclear, as I see it, is the cost. It is a financial risk and burden that will be placed on the taxpayer. It is almost impossible to get private loans for the cost to build a nuclear plant (most banks would refuse without loan guarantees) and so for the 100 plants to be built, they are going to have to get loan guarantees from the U.S. government. That is a huge amount of money and risk for the taxpayer to take on, at least I think so. I think this talk of 100 new plants is easier said than done from a financial standpoint.
