  • North Korea Threatens A “Merciless Offensive”

Consistent with the highly belligerent posture North Korea has taken in the past three weeks, and the “rapid-fire series of provocations“ it has initiated since the beginning of 2009, Pyongyang yet again chose to escalate its rhetoric, this time threatening to use its nuclear weapons in a “merciless offensive” if provoked. After testing its second nuclear device in less than three years, numerous ballistic missile tests, deciding to withdraw from the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War, and sentencing two American journalists to 12 years’ hard labor, North Korea took another unprecedented step in announcing for the first time it was prepared to use nuclear weapons in an offensive capacity. Up until now, North Korea has insisted its nuclear program was purely for defensive purposes.

The statements came not because North Korea felt threatened or felt itself the victim of an injustice, but merely because a South Korean company doing business at a North Korean industrial complex set up in 2004 chose to pull out and end its contract. Such erratic behavior only emphasizes the need for the United States to continue to deploy a multi-layered missile defense system and to restore funding for the Missile Defense Agency’s budget. Although Secretary Gates has expressed some consideration for restoring his proposed cuts to the MDA budget, in light of North Korea’s recent behavior, the window for doing so is closing quickly.

Now it is getting serious. Obama's childish world view is coming home to bite him. By continually stating his outrage and disappointment and taking his concerns to the UN, Obama has only encouraged this rogue regime to expand its threats. Treating a despot like a two-year old having a temper tantrum is dangerous foreign policy. South Korea and Japan should be working on their own nuclear deterrents.

    2. J.C. Hughes, Texas says:

Or maybe Obama should duplicate Kim JR's projected blame for all his economic woes and personal frustrations on America, done! Possibly Obama's pacification efforts can include our Allies and America's west coast as sacrificial communities to avoid offending poor little JR by destroying his toy arsenal as he launches.

    3. Spiritof76, New Hamp says:

I think Obama should go to N.Korea and apologize for America as it is customary for him to do. The N.Korean dictator will then clearly see a great ally in him and who knows, they may even release the two reporters from the Gore Lies Inc. media.

    4. HW, Hawaii says:

KIM Jung-Il was targeted as part of the Axis of Evil by President Bush during his post 9/11 address. Bush and our Congress agreed to go to war and topple Saddam and destroy the DPRK's closest military trading partner: Iraq–thus putting KIM in a greater isolated, weakended position without military confrontation with his country. KIM, knowing the second and third effects of all proclomations he makes, understands raising war tension will most likely cause our military to rethink it's ongoing progress to turn US military tours of duty in South Korea from 11-month unaccompained to 3-year accompanied tours. By doing so, KIM takes away what we needed as a stabilizing factor for our military in the face of continous Middle East deployments and family separations. Playing chess in NE Asia demands leadership on our part, something we lack at this time.

I am ashamed Mr.Obama has turned his back on Israel, our best ally in the Middle East but continues his desires to sit down and talk to Iran, N.Korea and some Taliban Leaders. His recent Mi East trip he snubbed a visit to Israel and has been known to tell Israel "do not not take pe-emptive action on Iran" Does he forget how many bombs Irael has been hit with which are provided by Iran and Syria? By not making a courtesy stop in Israel Mr. Obama's decision are scaring me!!
