  • What Next? White Roof Edition

In the Foundry’s latest edition of ‘What’s Next?,’ we give you Obama Energy Secretary Steven Chu’s radical environmental proposal which the Telegraph describes as: “all the world’s roofs should be painted white as part of efforts to slow global warming.” Chu says he is in favor of “white roofs everywhere.” This is the same thinking that developed the ‘paint all cars black’ solution to global warming in California, Chu’s home state.

More importantly, buried deeper in the article below this new Tom Sawyer energy policy is a much more disturbing statement by Secretary Chu: “The US will move, inevitably it will move first, as a more developed country we should be moving first, and I hope China will follow.” Essentially, this is the Get Out of Jail Free Card that China has been waiting for. As America kills its economy to advance a Global Warming agenda, China gets to take all of those jobs, all of that manufacturing and all of that deregulation. But when it comes to China, this Administration’s strategy inevitably comes down to “hope.” And that’s the real whitewash. What’s Next?

I suggest that we have Energy Secretary Steven Chu paint his hind quarters white and then point them toward the sun. This will help Global Warming much more than any white roof could!

      Sorry, just couldn't resist!

It's exactly what has been going on since the first big manufacturer of America moved his business overseas. Government's unnecessary taxing and unnecessary regulation to grow needlessly more and more government, forcing private businesses to follow government rules, prejudices and bias' instead of allowing the business owner to do what is best for the business, forcing businesses to move outside America or close down. And as the government is subsidizing their businesses of and with bias, the tax payer is paying TWICE. 1st from their taxes (paying for subsidy)then from their purchase. This has been wrong from the start as the American government fraudulently and intentionally destroys American capitalism. It's sad that a few in government has faith in people and knowledge of freedom personal liberty and personal responsibility. American GOVERNMENT represents WEAKNESS!

GOVERNMENT FORCE OF UNEMPLOYMENT. While GOVERNMENT EMPLOYS MORE AND MORE…getting nowhere fast.

While government is subsidizing businesses of and with bias, the tax payer is paying TWICE (at least.) 1st from their taxes (paying for subsidy)then from their purchase. This has been wrong from the start, in a country of FREE PEOPLE AND FREEDOM as the American government fraudulently and intentionally destroys America's freedom to capitalize.

It's sad that a few in government has faith in people, knowledge of freedom, personal liberty and personal responsibility. American GOVERNMENT MAJORITY represents WEAKNESS with the president leading the way.

    4. Mark N, Indiana says:

Unfortunately this past election put people in government that arrogantly think they know better than the majority of us. They are willing to jeopardize our country and limit our choices thinking they can make better choices for our lives than we can.

The reality, this is about taking away our freedoms in the economy because the science for human causes of global warming are now in serious question; of course anyone that looks at the geological history of the earth knows it has warmed and cooled without any human interaction so we don't know if this is just part of the normal cycle. The actions of this administration have been about greater government control over all aspects of our lives and global warming is just another way to take away more of our freedom.

President Obama's constant apologizing for American make it clear he has no intention of creating a greater America but an America that fits his concept of a world citizen. Global warming legislation is just one way to achieve this as it shows the world that he will push this action even though it cost us economic prosperity.

    5. Spiritof76, New Hamp says:

Chu alone should be the reason to close down the energy department-save the planet, the US and mankind in general. It is hard sometimes to understand how some body like Chu profess to be a scientist with a clear lack of capability to evaluate triviality of what he is proposing unless it is entirely political demagoguery.

    9. Donna Sykes - Osceol says:

Hey, lets go for it. the people of China, will paint all their roofs white first, and then India, Africa and on down the list. America doesn't qualify since we have Obama for President and therefore capitism will be banished and there will be no pollution or global warming here, Just ask Rensa or Green Peace.

    10. jim smith new york says:

Yo Steve! How do you want this done? Do we go with the ivory, the white rock, charcoal white or whatever? Is it semi-gloss, da full gloss or matte? Does the Painters Union Local get a piece of this, including the roofs they don't paint? Is there overtime, time and a half, supper money,a coffee wagon, buffet lunch, eight "no smoking" breaks, rollers, brushes, pneumatic energy saving sprayers? Do we get free Arnesto caps? White bib overalls? Whats up with this?

    11. Kent, VA says:

Another example of how the folks who destroyed California have been given the reins of the federal government. They can do what they did in California — only bigger. And "badder."

Dear Lord Above, Please Help Us. Amen.

    12. joant says:

I was thrilled when I read Energy Secretary Chu's theory "all roofs should be painted white." I always thought of myself as dumb, but after Chu's unbelievably stupid remarks, I feel elevated into the "not so dumb after all" category.

    13. Fred,Michigan says:

If a fifth grade student made a proposal like this you could at least understand the naiveté; but a nobel laureate physicist? Between this and the "make sure your tires are inflated properly" solutions the Obama administration is making their "new emphasis on science" a sideshow!

This would be equivalent to taking all the cars in the world off the road for 11 years? Really?

    14. Ross writes, Florida says:

The Obama administration is of action no matter how wrong it is. Heinrich Heine wrote, "Mark this well, you proud men of action! you are, after all nothing but unconscious instruments of the men of thought." We have developed a government of puppets, puppet actions exercising strange and dangerous comedy. But the real question, who are the puppeteers?

We seem to be on the fast track to a European socialism government that has never worked no matter where it has been tried. Herbert Spenser once wrote, "All Socialism involves slavery… That which fundamentally distinguises the slave is that he labours under coercion to satisfy another's desires." Why would the American people desire to be economic slaves to a fail system?

It seems to be the philosphy of our elected officials today to follows the definition of POWER by Theodore Draper; "…our politics has failed. Since no politician can afford to admit this, we must pretend that we are resorting to power in order to make our politics succeed." That is happening right before our very eyes, blatantly.

    15. Angel, Ohio says:

so — will this become a law? Will they have a special non-white roof tax? And what about the people who live in colder climates that might want a dark roof to help collect warmth…..

I bet Obama told him to say this. Sounds a lot like the tire inflation idea.

This guy is such a fool!

    16. Dennis A. Social Circle Ga. says:

The land of the FREE is going by the wayside, because of the stupid people that have been sent to DC.MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON THIS COUNTRY, A GODLESS COUNTRY WITH GODLESS PEOPLE RUNING IT.

    17. Steve, GA says:

Hey Chu! I was just wondering……were you born a bonehead, or do you just practice a lot?

    18. Blue Dog, USA says:

I thought California wanted to ban painting cars black because one must run the air conditioning more and thus consume more fuel.

    19. Sandy, Indiana says:

If I'm supposed to stay out of somebody's uterus, I think I can demand they stay away from my roof.

    20. Austin, Tx says:

I think it is just a suggestion. And as someone who is getting her roof replaced, and all the white shingles are backordered… it seems some are happy to take the energy savings. Clearly not all of the US population is ignorant enough to dismiss ideas based on their simplicity.

    21. caty, washington, dc says:

please greatgramma-birds and planes have been flying over Greece and other whitewashed areas for years without a problem. haven't you ever looked at a travel magazine?

    22. Walter, Durham, NC says:

Installing white roofs to lower cooling cost is not a new idea. The fact that you can go to a hardware store and buy a white roof coating right now should be enough evidence of this. Before you guys start knocking an educated physicist for suggesting a way to lower our energy consumption, and saving you money, you might want to do more then read a two paragraph article with one brief quote. It amazes me that when someone suggests a simple yet effective idea your first response is to call him "dumb". Go do some real research on the idea and then comment, the guy didn't earn a nobel prize by repeating what someone elese tells him. He earned it by doing research and thinking through ideas, you all should try it sometime.
