  • Another Opinion on Waxman-Markey: CEI

The Waxman-Markey Global Warming Tax would have a devastating effect on our economy. But don’t just take our word for it. This week we’ll be sharing the opinions of other organizations who agree that Waxman-Markey will cause massive unemployment and drive energy prices up for all Americans.

Today: Myron Ebell, Director of Energy and Global Warming Policy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has voted to send to the House floor probably the most destructive bill ever passed out of a congressional committee. The Waxman-Markey energy-rationing bill, if enacted, will be the biggest tax increase in the history of the world. It will take trillions of dollars from consumers while making massive payoffs to the big business special interests that support the bill. By raising energy prices through the roof, it will destroy millions of jobs and create perpetual economic stagnation.

The Committee’s Democratic majority voted down numerous amendments that would limit the economic damage. They voted to continue energy rationing even if gasoline prices go above five dollars a gallon or electricity prices double or unemployment exceeds fifteen percent. They voted against provisions to restrict speculators manipulating the market in rationing coupons and against suspending the scheme if China and India refuse to agree to undertake their own energy-rationing policies.

The Waxman-Markey energy-rationing bill poses a huge threat to American prosperity and freedom. It would impoverish Americans and turn America into a third-rate economy.

    1. C Hyatt, Albuquerque says:

About the only thing we conservatives need to say about the bad policy and nose to tail politics we are seeing is this "Get ready for the 2010 mid-term elections and eliminate the problem." Start with your local government, move on to state and finish it off with federal. We citizens have to live within our budget, our elected officials should have the same constraints. The only difference between a bank rober and our Government right now is that the latter does their stealing under protection of the law. Vote them out, create some real change.

    2. cris, CA says:

America, wake up! Obama's administration and this Congress is killing America; Waxman-Markey is no way to create energy independence, but,it is a sure way to destroy the American economy and family income making us all vulnerable to government control and guarantees America's demise.

      It's gotta stop NOW!

THERE NEEDS TO BE A GIGANTIC EFFORT TO EXPOSE THE BIGGEST PONZI SCEME TO COME DOWN THE PIKE.CAN WE NOT USE THE CONSERATIVE TALK RADIO TO PUT A BIG PUSH ON THIS? THE CONGRESS IS SO CLOSE TO PASSING THIS MONSTER,IT HAS TO BE STOPPED.SHOULDN'T THE REPUBLICANS BE OUT TELLING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THE FACTS? USE EVERY MEANS NECESSARY,THE TRUTH IS THERE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE WHAT A FRAUD THIS CAP&TRADE BILL IS.WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP AGAINST THIS?

    6. Ron Thompson says:

I contacted my representatives and senators, New Mexico, about the situation and my disappointment with the bill and some other issue. And in typical Democratic style, no response! As if to say, shut up and color! we outside the beltway need to understand that, the folks inside the beltway could careless about us. There attention is for the few, activist, favorite friends (Al Gore),and one upsmanship with each other. This waxman theft is just another display of the lack of attention to those that actually make America great. How about some recalls, impeachment type actions to get their attention?

    7. TGOTCB says:

The Libs controlling this country will cram down everything they can BEFORE the 2010 elections. Once enacted, this massive transfer of wealth and destruction of capitalism will be beyond repair. The "blame Bush" smoke screen will work long enough for them to change America into a critically weakened bastian of democracy and home to ingenuity, risk, investment.

Obama's policies will prove to be catastrophic, but the damage will have been done when those with the intellectual capacity to understand cry out "what has happened to America?"

Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Waxman et al are collectively destroying America for their misguided and selfish personal agendas.

      Shameful if not treasonous.

    8. Joel Kneisley, Ohio says:

Consider that $4 gasoline in mid-2008 increased homeowner mortgage defaults (i.e. no money left in the month to pay the mortgage), resulting to failures of CDO's (credit default obligations) in the financial sector.

Consider the result of Waxman-Markey when "mature" — higher costs for nearly ALL items homeowners buy, to the tune of ~$300 per month — and project the effect on homeowner mortgage defaults and the resulting financial chaos.

    9. Rich, Whistler, BC says:

Debating cap and trade is the wrong argument. The debate

the Republicans should have with the proponents of this

legislation is whether or not global warming exists and

whether C & T will do anything to mitigate it.

We are discussing the treatment and we have not determined

if the patient is actually sick.

    10. B J Vanderlip says:

It is highway robbery..I wish some one would impeach Obama and staff especially Pelosi, Reid and Chuck Schumer. Watch what Obama does not what he says….

    11. Ben C, Ann Arbor, MI says:

Rich is correct. The debate is whether climate change is man made or a natural event. Cap and Tax makes the assumption it is man made and can be changed by changing human behaviour. This presumption has never been fully debated and it appears most of the expert climatologists are leaving the "global warming" bandwagon. The problem as I see it is once a federal program is implimented, regardless of the intent, it will take an act of God to stop it. Congress rarely places sunset provisions in their legislation. This is the basis of my fear for our nation.

    12. Dennis Idaho says:

It is "TAXMAN/MALARKEY Higher taxes and BS

    13. Rey, Utah says:

Rich and Ben are right on the money! Al Gore and all the rest continue to assert that science has spoken on the issue and it is a done deal. They – including Gore refuse to engage in honest civil debate even though tens of thousands of bonifide scientists have gone on record to the contrary, and because the average citizen (sheep?) gets its info from the network news. The urgency right now is education. We have a moral obligation to spread the word to every person we can. Sure, we should contact our congressmen, but don't hold your breath until we get enough people clamoring for redress that the royal class in Washington D.C. feels their gravy train being threatened.
