  • Morning Bell: The Obama Spending Cut Farce Continues

On October 7, long after Lehman Brothers collapsed and the extent of our economic downturn was known, Teresa Finch of Nashville, Tennessee, asked both presidential candidates: “How can we trust either of you with our money when both parties got — got us into this global economic crisis?” Then-candidate Barack Obama replied: “What I’ve proposed, you’ll hear Sen. McCain say, well, he’s proposing a whole bunch of new spending, but actually I’m cutting more than I’m spending so that it will be a net spending cut.” A “net spending cut.” That is what the President of the United States promised the American people. And of all the promises that President Barack Obama has broken, his “net spending cut” broken promise is the most flagrant by far.

The Obama administration is clearly aware of the yawning gap between their rhetoric and reality. That is why on April 21, President Obama ordered his cabinet to identify $100 million in spending cuts in each of their agency budgets. Never mind that this cut amounted to just .006% of this year’s estimated $1.75 trillion budget deficit. But the Obama administration’s audacity did not end there. Today the White House will unveil $17 billion in proposed cuts for next year’s budget. While $17 billion is a 1,700,000% improvement on $100 million, it still comes out as a farce when put in the proper perspective:

As our own Brian Riedl told USA Today: “These presidents’ budget cuts are typically a public relations exercise, because presidents rarely put the weight of the White House behind these cuts and … allow Congress to ignore them.” And as far as that public relations battle goes, former Congressional Budget Office director Rudolph Penner tells the Washington Post: “They have a long way to go to show fiscal restraint.”
    Quick Hits:

    • The Los Angeles Unified School district pays 160 union members roughly $10 million a year to do nothing.
    • Silicon Valley executives are telling the Obama administration’s hunt for revenue to finance his massive spending increase to leave them alone.
    • Centrist Democrats who don’t want a massive new energy tax to kill jobs in their districts are telling Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to set aside the Waxman-Markey energy tax bill.
    • The economic stimulus bill enacted in February contains $3 billion that ACORN could receive, and the 2010 federal budget contains another $5.5 billion that could also find its way into the group’s coffers.
    • It’s still not too late to order the perfect Mother’s Day gift: Rebecca Hagelin’s “30 Ways in 30 Days to Save Your Family.” The guide every busy Mom needs features a forward by Sean Hannity, personal stories from Rebecca, as well as anecdotes from other parents.

    1. Rachel, Cookeville, says:

This President's spending agenda, along with his administrations is mind-blowing, especially at a time when this country is reeling from economic downturns. As I type this, it's being reported that THEY ARE PLANNING TO ANNOUNCE ANOTHER $3.6 TRILLION IN SPENDING TODAY! (Along with a $17 Billion in cuts…LMAO) This group of democrats are living in La-la land!! The only hope we have is to replacing our current Congress in 2010 and personally I wouldn't mind replacing every one of them that's been there over 4 years. We've GOT to get serious about term limitations on these guys, when they are there over 4 years, they lose total touch with reality. (*&*&%^&%$%$#^%$#)

    2. Jack Lohman says:

There is only one way to cut government spending and that's to eliminate our system of payola (campaign contributions) that causes it. Public funding of campaigns would cost just $6 par taxpayer per year and would be a terrific bargain. But conservatives won't accept it.

    3. jjay - Louisville, K says:

There is little doubt the federal government has a long way to go to show fiscal restraint. That includes both Demos and Reflubs with their budget and NO NUMBERS!

You might want to compare budget cut specifics with those of W's and note that his cuts would have made the federal government agencies LESS effective as in the previous seven years of his fluked administration. By trimming vital agency budgets he and his lockstep party could falsely claim that those agencies were not effective and should be eliminated.

      RIGHT!

Just as they claimed the military needed unprecedented increases in the defense budget to be successful in Iraq and Afghanistan, Gitmo, etc, etc. – and we see where THAT expenditure got us.

No better off that the Soviet Union, practically broke, on the verge of economic collapse and wondering what other nations in the world would be willing to stand by us after finding out we have broken the agreed upon Geneva Convention rules of torture.

Get off your "high horse" and start suggesting some real solutions instead of constantly complaining and whining that you lost an election. This nation was founded on a principle that people CAN work together even though they disagree on some things. NOT on the NOTION that if one cries enough, everything will be alright.

The point is we have a hell of a lot of work to do to get out of this mess. Blaming and crying is not going to do it. It takes hard work and if we want to survive this, we have to find ways to WORK together.

    4. Eugene Hoffman, Hous says:

It is not just the collectivist, President Obama, that we must be concerned with; it is, the peoples watchdogs, the Senate, The Congress, and the press that are undermining our way of life. While we the people, mostly in the private sector, go to work and create wealth; our Congress and Senate; who we trusted with our votes, and employed and empowered to do the right thing are selling us out to the lobbyists, foreign cartels (PROFESSIONAL bribers), and any other entity that desires the castigation of Western Civilization. They must be voted out of office, and term limits must be imposed.

    5. jim smith new york says:

Nobama has incorporated into his frequent rants, a kind of limited "shelf life" context on when, where, how and why anything will get done. It's all perishable and any truth contained in these rants has scant hope of survival. You just read the Nobama version of selective lying. One day, the fawning, adoring, suicidal media will wake up, if they're still employed, and realize that they have grown a sinister monster. Then what?

    6. Jim@Redding,CA says:

When are people going to quit being so

overwrought about the things Obama says,

one way or another? Here's all you need

to know: WHENEVER HIS LIPS ARE MOVING, HE

IS LYING. How many more lies do you need

to hear before you get it?

Why not instead DO SOMETHING to stop the

pain? How about: 1) Impeachment or 2) Vote him out and then repeal all he's done

or 3) Put enough pressure one your consti-

tuents so THEY do their job???

It's far past time for us to quit snivel-

ing and to actually DO SOMETHING POSITIVE.

    7. Jerry Olympia, WA says:

The problem with BHO and his infamous Promises is, that their Is an experation date on all of them!!

    8. Jonathan Seid, Willi says:

The 2008 Presidential campaign had two candidates that were weak. The weaker candidate won. Compare campaign promises and opinions and rhetoric to the first 100- days of governing. Is the main character a man of integrity? No he isn't. With everything on the table with democrats in control, expect double-speak, huge deficits, diminished national security and more government programs and employees. Is this not the model the president and his party have fashioned? Yes it is. Many Voters want this type of government and they are getting it. I do not expect the GOP to do much about it. Most republicans have supported the expansion of government going back to President Truman. It's rather late to rail on and on about the direction of the government when it's really about a political leader with a lot of passion for speeding up the socialists' expansion with a fascists' zeal.

    9. jjay - Louisville, K says:

      Now we talking reality.

Term limits would help keep those elected focused on solving the issues before us rather than "learning the political system" for avoiding the problems and becoming so well versed in politics that they confuse their constituents with the lobbyists who hand out the payola – or cash to get re-elected.

SET TERM LIMITS FOR CONGRESS – just as for presidents.

$6 is a huge bargain to cut out the cash flow from the enormous corporations few of us can confront.

CUT THE SALARY FOR LIFE benefits for anyone who serves one term in Congress. Give them a retirement, but one that compares to the rest of us. They are NO BETTER.

ELIMINATE their ability to set their own salaries. Check the last time they reduced or kept their salary the same as last year – even though the rest of us are in a recession.

REQUIRE an approval from the electorate on their salary

EVERY YEAR. See if that brings out the voters.

BRING OUR NATIONAL GUARD HOME – WHERE THEY BELONG AND WHERE THEY SIGNED ON TO SERVE.

REQUIRE some sort of service of every citizen – whether it is in the National Guard, Peace Corps, Conservation Corps, Military, tutoring, voter registration or whatever so a sense of community, pride and contributing is brought into educating our youth.

ELIMINATE the possibility of any public servant working for any lobbying corporation for ten years after they complete a term of office.

WE CAN DO THIS. THERE ARE WAYS TO IMPROVE OUR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT WITHIN THE CONSTITUTION. THE FOUNDING FATHERS KNEW IT WAS NOT PERFECT AND WE KNOW WE HAVE WORK TO DO TO KEEP MAKING IT WORK.

    10. Ken Jarvis - Las Veg says:

"The Los Angeles Unified School district pays 160 union members roughly $10 million a year to do nothing."

Sound like the LA Unified School District

      NEEDS A NEW union Negotiator.

    11. Extirpates, San Dieg says:

      Political theater from DC…

Duh Presidunce and the Dumbocretins have spilled 3600 gallons of water, now through concerted, quick, and decisive effort, they will be able to “save” one thimble full.

    12. Ron, Derry NH says:

      This is just the beginning.

All of us in the real world know the shoe has yet to drop. The fiscal year ends in June for most towns and states around here and the last of Bush years taxation revenue will be done with.

With less spending and less money moving the worst scenario of the affects of Obamas fear tactics and looting of America has yet to hit the fan.

Billions of dollars of shortfall at the state level will not be recovered as millions wasted on Detroit won't be either. The value of the dollar to human output ration,(real economic Productivity) still needs to be reflected in the economy and no spending from the government will correct that, only delay it. Since the only thing left moving in this economy will be food and fuel the tax revenues to towns and state will eventually prove to be the undoing of this moronic attempt to disguise failed congressional policies, regulations and the fed, that we will be in deep doo by years end.

The delusional spending won't be erased by some miracle taxation policy as money is beginning to freeze.

Once the idiots in the government have to lay of state and local workers, and not in their usual symbolic union threat of police and fire fighters, the troubles with this administration will only be able to be ignored by amping up the bull screen. So in a nut shell you have seen nothing yet.

Todays falsehoods are going to look tame as fiscal year 2010 starts with massive shortfalls and the reality that Obama has no cure.

I hope you like the corset of communism because the framework is in place and the players are eager to commit our country to the lacing up of the economy to protect the governments power base.

The subtle attacks on free speech and religion are test balloons to see what the winds will tolerate. Since the American electoral fell for this scheme, this will be the future trend.

Certainly do not expect the methods to change, just the distance from reality that will change and get broader, so the image can be mantained. Remember America voted for an image not a man, so by all means the image will be amplified.

    13. J.C. Hughes, Texas says:

Save your breath. The Beltway's majority Demagogues aren't listening. The increasingly top heavy federal infrastructure is bound to collapse under its own weight. It's only a matter of time. Focus on state and local affairs.

    14. Ben C, Ann Arbor, MI says:

“What I’ve proposed, you’ll hear Sen. McCain say, well, he’s proposing a whole bunch of new spending, but actually I’m cutting more than I’m spending so that it will be a net spending cut.”

Its classic Washington doublespeak and his actions speak louder than his words. Clearly Barry was not reading a teleprompter when he made the above statement.

    15. David Sayers, NC says:

Do you really expect anything different from this fraud? Obama lies, but since he is protected by the media he has in his back pocket, very few things will come to light. And light is what Obama and his gang fear the most. He says there will be 17 billion in cuts but the military is going to take 50% of the hit. Perfect, just when it's all about to hit the fan. Here's a couple of things Obama must have missed while getting all that education.

"I,however, place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest dangers to be feared."

      Thomas Jefferson,1816

"I am for a government rigorously frugal and simple, applying all the possible savings to the public revenue to the discharge of the national debt."

      Thomas Jefferson,1799

Out of control spending, inexperence,a socialist/marxist agenda and a self serving attitude spells disaster for the country.

    16. Ed, Montrose County, says:

The empOrer has no clothes. Hans Christian Andersen should be viewed as a prophet.

    17. Pamela Colorado says:

it's the crazy lady again and I was just thinking

Everyone needs to stop thinking dem. and repub. and start thinking about this country and all those that want something for nothing need to get out a work and see what people are really like out there and that it doesn't matter what your political views are but that we are ALL AMERICANS .

You don't have to publish any of what I said before and this but I just had to sound off to someone.

      THANK YOU

    18. jjay - Louisville, K says:

When are you folks going to stop crying, blaming and fear mongering the future like losers and start offering real solutions to these issues?

Anyone can complain and blame making superfluous accusations that have a basis in fear and no any facts. It takes time and effort to come up with real alternatives. Unfortunately, most seem to want to blubber all over us and run the other direction when asked for a real answer. Let's get the brains working and bombard Congress with the ideas that they need to hear, since they no longer think for us as much as they do for the cash bearing lobbyists.

They know they are in trouble because there is more information available to citizens than ever before and so they continue to try to derail and deflect our attention to outrage and cynicism without really addressing the specifics of issues before them. They know most of us are smarter than they are on these issues so have got to keep the airwaves full of fluff. Keep them on task and demand real answers to the hard questions instead of gross generalities anyone can spout.

    19. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

This whole thing is a joke, he never intended to cut the budget, only increase spending. It is just like jobs, now he wants 800 more for the IRS, and thousands for the Pentagon to oversee contracts. How is this cutting spending??? All he is doing increases the size of the "guvernment" and costing tax payers more. His tax cutting on the so called 95% of Americans is a joke. We all will end paying those few dollars back in our tax returns for 2009, plus interest. The dems and obama have no desire to cut spending, they only want to increase the give away programs, while cutting defence and homeland security. How well do people think he will act when we get our lunch handed to us on a silver platter by the very ones that obama says he will talk to and settle our differences????? Our founding Fathers have rolled in their graves at what he has done to this country since he took office. It is a shame!!!

    21. Mike Sheahen, Hickor says:

Of course when Leftist/Socialist power and money grabbing government elitists and statists, such as Obama, so speak and act as they do to mislead in order to get and/or stay in power and grab more power and money, such government elitists and statists always have, always do, and always will so demonstrate how such government elitists and statists operate with their "articles of faith", including another self-described and demonstrated Socialist named Hitler who pointed out how when he said such things as "It is always more difficult to fight against faith than against knowledge", "How fortunate for leaders that men do not think", "Make a lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it", and "The man who has no sense of history is like a man with no ears or eyes".

To put it all another way, as Edmund Burke (1729-1797) said it, "Those who don't know (or deny, or forget, or ignore, or re-write) history are destined (or doomed) to repeat it".

The bottom line is: Such government elitists and statists as Obama and his Comrades and Quislings, and such antics and machinations as theirs, are exactly what we must indeed fight, defeat, and remove from power.

The only alternative, as shown and proven by history to this day, is if we the people fail to fight, defeat, and remove such government elitists and statists from power, then we are in fact doomed to repeat history yet again and suffer yet again the subjugating and enslaving consequences of falling for such government elitists and statists.

Only this time, thanks to technology, etc, and the Left's Orwellian antics and machinations, it's more probable than ever before that the government elitist and statist Left will be far better able to crush the efforts of “We, the People” for our freedoms, resources, and security, and both we and they know it; thus of course that drives them that much more to their antics and machinations, and it all makes it that much more necessary for us to fight, defeat, and remove them from power, including through our 1st Amendment freedom of speech and of the press (which means no government control of talk on radio), the right to recall out of office, and our right to vote them out of power before it's too late.

In other words, as history to this day has already been forced to repeatedly show and prove, the choice is "A", the alternative is "B", but there is no "C", as in "A", Stand, fight, defeat, and remove from power, or else "B", be fought, defeated, and subjugated (made subservient, enslaved) by government elitists and statists (including Leftists) and their accomplices.

    22. Lyn says:

Why does Obama even bother to cut spending? He has the majorities he needs in both houses. I think it is out of contempt that he is doing this. To pretend like this it just insults one's intelligence. It's more in-your-face than anything. The more one thinks critically about what the Obama regime says and does the more one is offended.

America's currency is going to be further weakened and our economy will be handicapped. I don't envy those who will come along after us and have to do the work and pay the price for this Obamamania spendapolooza. Lyn fromwembleypark.com

    23. CerpherJoe says:

I haven't seen anybody make the simple case yet, including Heritage which is: OK $17B cut, but what is the increase? $600B? Net Increase. QED.

That's the simple way to show how much of a farce it is.

    24. Larry H. Chino says:

Those 160 "Union" teachers sitting home doing nothing to educate the students of Calif. for the most part, a good many of them have been accused of sexual harassment. I worked in law enforcement and a good sexual harassment case would have gotten you booted out of the Department, another words a "zero tolerance". This is why the state of Calif. has no money and hopefully when the upcoming propositions fail the state will have to go bankrupt and reorganize all the local and state contracts.

Cutting spending? What we're seeing is the accumulation of debt so high that just to pay it off will put us further in debt. It's like the family who has amassed so much debt that just to pay on it requires them to take out more debt… and … they can't even afford to buy a pizza on Friday night.

Ethanol? Solar utilities? Both use massive amounts of water and no one talks about where the water will come from. The solar utilities being built in Arizona and California will use water to cool their mirrors. Neither state, nor Nevada, has enough water now. Some analysis is needed on this subject before the democrats "invest" billions more in these technologies.

    28. Cathy Cuellar North says:

It is so easy to tell when Obama is lying-when his lips are moving. I only hope we who love this country, who did not vote for this tyrant, will make it through this most atrocious Presidency the United States has ever had to endure. There have been so many solid solutions offered up to them, but they reply with a resounding "We won-we get to do whatever we want whether you like it or not." Of course, they leave out the rest of that retort "And whether it makes any sense or not!"

    29. Mary L., Kentucky says:

Where are all the lawyers? A class-action lawsuit should be filed against the government for the abuse of power and unconstitutional spending and taking over of businesses. Obama and comrades need to be challenged in court. Where does he get the right to fire CEO's and take over all these businesses. This country is headed for a big fall, I hope you all are storing food, water, ammo and your Bibles because they are all going to be limited by the government.
