  • Morning Bell: The Unprincipled Fight for Government-Run Health Care

Last year, then-candidate Barack Obama told a rally in Albuquerque, “If I were designing a system from scratch, I would probably go ahead with a single-payer system.” Earlier this month in Chicago, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) told a rally of government-run health care supporters: “I know many of you here today are single payer advocates and so am I … and those of us who are pushing for a public health insurance don’t disagree with this goal. This is not a principled fight. This is a fight about strategy for getting there and I believe we will.”

The fact that the left views a public plan option as part of an unprincipled strategy to eventually achieve government-run health care is not news. That Members of Congress are now so openly admitting it, is. So what is the left’s “strategy” for turning a seemingly innocuous public health insurance option into single payer nationalized medicine? It goes something like this:

Recent SCHIP expansion and additional Medicaid funding in the stimulus package made a substantial down payment on major expansion of government run health programs. Established research shows that a public health plan will ”crowd out” private insurance, forcing millions of Americans off their current plans, and away from their family doctors. A public health plan, coupled with Comparative Effectiveness Research, would engineer artificially lower prices for medical services through the imposition of Medicare-style price controls. Such Medicare-style payment levels would undercut the market share of existing private health plans, and, combined with a mandate on employers, stack the incentives against workers in private employer-based health insurance by encouraging their employers to dump them into a new government-run health plan. Watch the video of Rep. Schakowksy’s statements on The Foundry. She clearly admits that the purpose of the government run option is to kill private insurance so everyone eventually is forced into government-run health care.

Moving all Americans into a government-run health care system will not only bankrupt our country, but will lead to less innovation in the health care sector and lower quality care for all Americans. There is an alternative. Some of which the Obama Administration even supports like removing the tax benefit of employer-sponsored health care coverage which will untie Americans health care coverage from their employers and help move the country towards a truly market based consumer driven health care model. Health care coverage can be expanded in a cost efficient manner, but only by empowering Americans to make health care decisions with their doctors.

It never ceases to amaze me, the amount of energy that can go into a project just to avoid doing the right thing. The best, simplest, least costly, most effective thing we could do is expand what has been working so well for years, Medicare. You get sick, you get care, and the caregiver gets paid. Nothing could be simpler.

But follow the money and you’ll find why the politicians don’t like it a bit. They get their money from insurance interests…

The operative fallacy is that health insurance = health care.

First, uninsured are cared for by the system all the time.

This scheme is simply rationing of existing, and shrinking, resources. Shrinking? Yes. Medicare reimburses some clinics sixteen cents on the dollar.

It's probably a good thing that socialized medicine is on the near horizon. After all, with cigarettes now costing $5.75 per pack, who the hell can afford health insurance?

      Newt was on CSpan yesterday

      and his ONLY REPLY WAS

      THE GOP HAS TO

      DEVELOP A PLAN.

The EASY way would be to

      accept Obama Fixes.

      Since January the GOP

has NOT DONE ONE GOOD THING.

    4. Ron, Derry NH says:

Yes the easiest way is to let communism take the country away from the people. the easiest way is to bill the next generation for this ones corruption, and certainly the easiest way would be to agree with communism because the fight to stay free and enjoy self achieved liberty is under attack from people who imagine that communism will be cheaper and heal all wounds.

Apparently reading history would be too much to ask.

The reality that many refuse to observe as that communism ruins civilization on the basic premise that it takes the value and incentive to succeed away and every one regresses in to a catatonic state of waiting for the next government promise of salvation, without any work involved in getting it.

Mr Jarvis is right. It is much easier to take from others and extort value from life than it is to get up every day and earn your existence by offering a value to society, especially now that communism is the governments planned agression upon its people.

    5. Mike in Conyers, GA says:

In reply to Ken in Las Vegas: Accept Obama's "fixes"? I don't think I've seen or heard of a "fix" come from him or his party! All I know of is more spending and bigger government moving our country farther in debt and farther toward a socialist state. Whether or not the GOP has a defined plan is mute seeing how the Dems will shurly shoot anything that they propose down or modify it enough that if it fails they will blame it on the Republicans.

Yes, The GOP needs to come up with a plan, but trying to keep the Dems in line is a full time job.I trust if the Republican Senators and Congressmen wish to keep their jobs next year they will have a plan soon.

    6. Christopher Popham S says:

There are co-op initiatives for health care that

would easily solve the problem; however, Congress,

which feeds off the private insurance industry,

      refuses to consider these options.

It is medical co-op ownership. Everything is covered; long term, short term, any and all surgeries and access to your regular PCP. At the

end of each year, having 'invested' into the

system, healthy members would receive a modest

dividend for not being sick or making a claim.

If 50 million American families paid $1000 per year and say another 50 million single members

paid $500 per year, then the aggregate for the

co-op would be(if my math is correct)at least

$75 billion. Considering what we all pay for

private health insurance in this country, this

      co-op proposal could work.

    7. B. Johnson, USA says:

Regarding the idea of federal health care, the people have forgotten the following. They have forgotten that the Founders made the 10th A. to reserve the lion's share of government power to serve the people to the states, not the Oval Office and Congress.

In fact, where health care is concerned, Jefferson, while commenting on the Founder's division of federal and state government powers, noted that the Founders had trusted the states, not the federal government with the care of the people. See for yourself.

"Our citizens have wisely formed themselves into one nation as to others and several States as among themselves. To the united nation belong our external and mutual relations; **to each State, severally, the care of our persons** (emphasis added), our property, our reputation and religious freedom." –Thomas Jefferson: To Rhode Island Assembly, 1801. ME 10:262 http://tinyurl.com/onx4j

Also note that Chief Justice Marshall had established the following case precedent, now wrongly ignored, which appropriately limits the power of the feds to lay taxes.

"Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States." –Chief Justice Marshall, GIBBONS V. OGDEN (1824) http://supreme.justia.com/us/22/1/case.html

So not only are federal spending programs like Obama's stimulus package and proposed health care not constitutionally authorized, the feds never had the power to lay taxes to finance such programs anyway.

The bottom line is that the people need to wise up to the ongoing, illegal usurping of state powers by the renegade federal government and do the following. The people need to work with their state legislators to go "upstream" of illegal federal taxes and repeal the 16th Amendment, the amendment that gives the feds the power to tax citizens directly. The problem with that amendment is that it has made it too easy for the corrupt feds to lay constitutionally unauthorized taxes.

Oh yes komrades, more government in your life, can't wait. Komrade Ken has his head still buried in Pravda. The only fix Chairman Obama ever pulled off was the election. There are some in this country that truly need to be cared for but this does not include non citizens and others who choose a $400.00 car payment, 52" TV sets and bunch of other useless crap instead of taking care of their families. Socialized health care does not work,is extremely expensive and frought with danger in the form of fraud and corruption.

All Alfred E. Obama wants to do is take from the productive and give to those that are not. Lets do everything possible to get the commies out of our lives, wallets and Washington,we don't want or need them.

    10. Ben C, Ann Arbor, MI says:

If government sponsored health care is so good then why are the critically ill people shipped to the Detroit Michigan hopsitals for diagnosis and treatment from Canada. As I have stated before, I have listened to my clients from Canada who all complain about their delivery system and poor medical care. Those who are able come to Detroit for their work-ups, rather than risk waiting months and be dead when it is their turn to see the physician. Our system is far from perfect but then why do so many foreign people from around the world come to our medical centers? We didn't develop the best medical care and be world leaders with "the government" running the show.

For those that think governement programs are so good, let me remind you that Social Security is the biggest ponzi scam going. It makes Madoff's look like a church picnic.

      Talk about "unprincipled."

This is right-wing Rovian rhetoric at its worst.

    12. Alice Trusley, Homos says:

It is unfortunate that our elected officials are determined to bring our great Nation to its knees. Let's face reality, we are in a state of "free market terrorism" with our free enterprise system under attack by our own government. Government sponsored health care would be a disaster….not enought doctors, nurses, or even medical facilities to accommodate the mass numbers that would be participating. Our elected officials need to stop and think before agreeing to government health care. The government is spending money like pouring "water" out of a boot.

Every Doctor, every clinic, every hospital, every private practice and every clinical practice. And, for those not paying attention, every pharmaceutical manufacturer, and every research laboratory whether public or private.

Religious foundations and the hospitals and the clinics and research you support are no longer yours; Masons/Shriners Children's Hospitals, oh well; Local Meals on Wheels will come under "Health Care. I'm not about to list them all, but you get the gist.

How about VA and Military medical facilities. I can not believe that the fact that LBJ tried this in his "War on Poverty" and it failed Congressional muster has been lost on this Batch of Beltway Banditos. It lost only because the "beds" were full of wounded veterans from Vietnam.

There absolutely has to be "ALL OUT WAR" by the conservatives of this country. The path of destruction that will come from implementation of an UHC governmental bureaucratic solution will end the practice of "MEDICINE" as we know it in our country.

Michael Steel, Newt Gingrich, et al: What ever else happens we must absolutely and equivalently stand on solid conservative principles. At his time "Bipartisanship" is a "dirty" word and simply put, "read my lips, you wont hear this word"

The American people have spoken: they do not want "wishy washy" bipartisan politics as usual. This more than anything else sunk the late McWiggles. They spoke again at the Tea Party's. They will again speak on the 4th of July.

We had damn well better listen. We Can Grow Our Numbers but money is NOT the answer. The answer is principles, an unambiguous message, truth, and a quick end to the Demagoguery of The "O".

Government health care is rationed care at best. If you are a senior citizen you will have a better chance of dying from the government health care. Canada, Britain and yes, Soviet Union had government care. People are either dying while waiting for assignment of priority or can not get in because their condition is not severe enough. Patients from Canada and Britain go outside their countries to get medical care!

How come Ted Kennedy went to some hospital in North Carolina instead of going to Cuba where according to Michael Moore, the closet communist, they have better medical care? I want to see the day when Michael Moore gets sick and the doctors in this country refuses to treat him so that he can go to Cuba to get the best care!

    16. Zack says:

Anyone who is against single payer health insurance should try living without it. You can say "get a job that provides it" but employers aren't obligated. As the costs rise with the economy continuing to shrink and the jobless rate rising, less employers will offer it and the 50+ million and growing uninsured will grow exponentially. Then there are the underinsured group. These people pay a lot for bareminimum coverage. For a 2% tax across the board (that means for a family of 3, the joint income would have to be over $200,000 to increase the current cost to most people) everyone could be covered. They would have their choice of doctor and the savings on administrative fees would be over $300 billion.

Picture this. You get sick. You go to the doctor of your choice. No paperwork about your health care provider if any. Just see the doctor and leave. The doctor sends the paperwork to a small administration that pays them. No reduced income for the doctors. No wasteful spending. Infact, this saves money. And if wait times are a problem, we all have the same healthcare, so we all have a public stake in making it better.

If congress had to go through what I have had to go through taking my pregnant wife to a free clinic because our health care costs would cost as much as our rent, we would have had single payer healthcare a long time ago.

"This piece is full of lies.

Single-payer is not government-run, nor would it affect anyone’s choice of doctor."

Breathtaking ignorance. Who in the hell IS the 'single-payer' if NOT the government?

And 'choice of doctors' is not the point here.

It's the availability of doctors, and medicines, and surgical procedures to all equally under a central government bureaucracy concerned more with cost-benefit strategies than human suffering.

At least now a patient denied payment has some appeal rights and can pay for it themselves.

Under single-payer a denial is often literally an unappealable death sentence for some and imposes unimaginable, unnecessary physical and psychological torment on many, many others.

How would you like to wake up each morning knowing you have prostate cancer NOW…but you're on a waiting list for chemotherapy which could be weeks…or months?

Patients are routinely prohibited from paying for their own medical care under socialized health care.

Britain's NHS refused to provide a second breast cancer medication on top of a woman's chemotherapy because it was too expensive.

The woman scraped up enough to pay for the drug on her own.

When the NHS discovered this, they withdrew payment for her chemotherapy. The woman died of the cancer.

(Incidentally, this woman was EMPLOYED by the NHS!)

The NHS tried to refuse payment for treatment of macular degeneration until a person had become completely blind in one eye.

The NHS advocates denial of ANY medical services to those they claim lead 'unhealthy lifestyles' like smoking, 'overeating', and possibly any other lifestyle they disagree with.

This power to deny treatment gives government nearly total control over the individual.

(Indiscriminate, unprotected gay sex undoubtedly will be exempt.)

There's a name for Brits, Canadians and others in 'single-payer' health care systems who flee their countries to get quality and timely medical care: 'medical tourists'.

(We could also call them 'survivors'.)

And one in three UK and Canadian doctors routinely sends their patients to the US for treatment.

In fact, Canada spends $1 billion per year in the US for treatments Canada can't provide on time…or at all.

They plead with the US not to follow them over the single-payer health care cliff.

      For them it's mostly 'single-NON-payer'.

There are many irrevocable decisions governments have made, for good or ill.

One of them is forcing private health insurance out of the health care market and replacing it by government-imposed national health care.

This will lead to unavailability, rationing, politicized denials of care, stifling of innovation and developments of new treatments and medications, and in general increase death and suffering for many.

Insurance companies are bloodsuckers. My company dumped providing insurance. Over 1200.00 monthly for a private basic 80/20 policy. More than my mortgage and food cost each month. I've had no major health problems in my life and wife uses only blood pressure medicine. You gotta be kidding, private system leaving people with this kind of basic costs. Private insurance and the pharms. sould be all put out of business.

    20. Mary,Cleveland, OH says:

It is true: government-sponsored healthcare will be a disaster! The quality of healthcare will go downhill. Look at Canada, Britan and other countries with "socialized medicine." They have more problems than we have with ours.

The USA has the greatest healthcare system in the world. We are leaders in advancement of medical technology and medicine. People around the world come to our country for treatment. If the govermnent tampers with our great system, God help us.

I believe to help curb healtcare costs in this country would be to eliminate malpractice lawsuit abuses, promote wellness, and make it easier to write off medical expenses on income taxes.

The private system is the best. I hope that someday countries like Canada and Britan model our system.

    22. Neil, Los Angeles, U says:

What's amazing about this whole debate, is that liberals hate big-box stores like Wal-Mart and Costco, big-box community like malls, and planned residential communities, and big-box trade like globalized trade. They love and actively promote boutique-ism and independent enterprise as the necessary alternative to impersonal, community-less city dwelling: bakeries, grocery stores, farming, shopping, book stores, etc. All except medicine. They want big-box medicine and they want it now. They want one stop shopping, lots of checkout lanes, and cheap prices. But, at every one of those stores, you lose choice. You ALWAYS lose choice because it's not possible for companies (or institutions) to provide both ultimate economic efficiency and ultimate consumer choice. At the big-box store can get X brand of toilet paper SUPER cheap, but you can't get Y off-brand toilet paper that YOU like better, because they don't carry it. To get cheap prices you have to buy in economies of scale that aren't possible for boutiques, but in doing they must choose one. And companies like Wal-Mart pressure vendors into producing the same item for cheaper and cheaper no matter what it costs the vendor to make it. But, that's what liberals want in their health care, and it just baffles me. But then again, post-modern liberals are motivated by ideology not logic. I won't say they're anti-intellectual (because they're not), they're just anti-Enlightenment intellectuals.

    23. Lee-White Tanks AZ says:

I think we have already had a taste of the idea that health care is subject to cost/benefit analysis.

Janet Napolitano said last week in reference to the "closing of the Mexican American border" I'll paraphrase here, I do not have the exact quote but: (paraphrasing) "The closing of the border is an expensive undertaking" I guess it is relative, ie more expensive then the projected deaths from a pandemic?

Human cost in terms of lives and suffering mean nothing to the bureaucratic mentality.

Think about Medicare and Medicaid as a rent-controlled New York apartments. Now think of private insurance as those apartments not subject to rent controls. What happens? When payments for part of a commodity are kept artificially low, the price of the rest increases. For years we have paid for government healthcare through not just taxes, but through increased medical premiums and copays. When government takes over the whole healthcare system, no one will remain to pay the difference, so rationing must occur.

    27. Mike, Texas says:

Jack Lohman writes; "The best, simplest, least costly, most effective thing we could do is expand what has been working so well for years, Medicare. You get sick, you get care, and the caregiver gets paid. Nothing could be simpler."

Yeah, Jack, this works so well that more and more Doc's are dropping medicare patients due to the pennies on the dollar payments they receive for services rendered. But the real proof of success comes in the fact that medicare will be B-R-O-K-E by 2012. So we should obviously add more cost onto that and the TRILLIONS of dollars in IOU's handed from congress to the social security fund that I'll never see a dime of.

It's time to get the government out of the business of solving the problems THEY create. And a gov. run healt care system will just be another DISASTER!

The healthcare problem is very complex because it involves several facets; healthcare providers, insurance co's, LAWYERS(malpractice suits), pharm. co's, and the consumer(who is NOT blameless), just to name a few.

There is no simple solution as the "crisis fixing" narcisistic elitists would have you believe.

If you are a doctor and have worked for years as a doctor FOR the Federal Government as well as in independent practice then you might know, as I do, the reality that will occur should the airheads that elected Obama have their way. First nobody wants to talk about the reality that Government run Health Care means the collectivization of Physicians. This means for you Liberals that the government declares that it OWNS doctors. Medicare has attempted to go all the way down this road but has been stopped short by Doctors refusing to participate. Medicare responded with Price controls for Doctors who declined to participate in the Medicare system. The war goes on. Health care organizations run by the federal government are filthy, wasteful, unethical, and dangerous. I know I've been there. If federal government run health care is passed each doctor will have to decide whether he will continue to practice if he is declared federal government property. I for one will not. If you are a doctor imagine what it will be like for you to have to provide your office location and phone number and to agree to a set of government mandated required behaviors, including availability, record keeping, hours, call, office staff, the list is endless. You will have absolutely no autonomy of practice. You will be no more than the equivalent of a letter carrier. If you are a doctor and you are not willing to fight against the future Obama has in store for you and your medical colleagues then you are already a cipher.

I'm a born-again Christian and a conservative voter but it really irritates me when conservative media outlets, bloggers or PAC's feel they need to "spin" what the left says to make it sound as horrible as possible in order to win political points or to inspire the conservative core.

We're better than that. I know the left does it too but you DON't fight fire with fire. It's appalling when either side does it because it is not truthful.

Better is to wage the battle on its merits. No need to exaggerate.

The left is not trying to "destroy" America. They sincerely believe their way is best for the country.

      We disagree.

      Argue the merits, not emotion.

      Show some character.

Greed is going to be our downfall. Every year, the average working American does not get a pay raise large enough to offset the price of health care. We need to change our diet and get rid of tobacco, this would save us billions that we could use on things beside health care.

    35. josey Maryland says:

Why should those of us who are retired and have health care which we pay a portion of be subjected to this Far Fetched plan. ..If they don't have health insurance put them on Medicare or Medicade. .This govt. is killing this country and we know it doesn't work in THE UK. .and Canada. . this administration wants to control everything..even when it comes to YOU going to the bathroom.

I am afraid most people in the USA will wake up when it is too too late and we will have a influx of sub grade Drs. who just don't give a crap except for the dollar. ..I am sick sick sick of all this . .and sorry that so many can be so blind to what is going on around them. ..

If you think that is what is going to happen to those in this Govt. Health System think twice. . they can't even balance a budget. . prosecute those that caused this financial downfall. .and even Give the American people a Pat on the Back when he goes overseas. . Look at history and Germany. . it will happen here if someone doesn't stand up in congress for the freedoms we so value . .and why should every person's medical information be computerized for the Govt. . so they can say. .well you are dying. . so we will help you get their sooner. . Or your treatment is so expensive. . forget it charley. . your dead. .A C-Section. to expensive. . who lives. . Mom or Baby. .Mark my words if this so called plan goes through. .it will be worse than the worst for every American . . some of course wnat to be taken care of live off welfare. . food stamps. . have a million illegitimate babies. .just for the welfare. . You are exceedingly naive and foolish but we are in your debt for exposing the simple minded thinking of those who think they would like socialized medicine.

    37. Benjamin, Salem Va. says:

why are there so many sick and unhealthy people in this country? answer: because we have left off from seeking true wisdom, and we also keep our children from it by not allowing wisdom to be taught in public schools.

Proverbs 3:1-26 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew. My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

Let's return to if it's not broke, don't fix it. Medicare(medicaid) is taking care of the uninsured, just go to a local hospital & witness it. Let's clean up the system, review why health costs are going up 15% plus per yr for the past 5 yrs and deal with the problems before we re-invent the wheel. We need private health care, not govt run tooth fairy fixes.

I agree with Benjamin from Salem. The solution to our health care ills is prayer. If we just pray really hard, doctors will lower their prices, hospitals will decide to charge less, insurance companies will forgo profits.

I'm praying that health care doesn't go up another 6% this year…and the year after that…and the year after that.

I'm praying we won't be spending 20% of GDP on doctors by 2020.

I'm praying really hard that by not doing anything, change will come. The free market will save us…just like it did on wall street. Just like it did for Bernie Matoff's clients.

Let's all get on our knees and pray that business will do the right thing for us hard working Americans….just like those fine bankers with the big bonuses

Pray folks. Pray. Because in the end…that's all we've got
