    Lafayette Square Tea Party Update

Best sign out in the rain today:

    Double Standards Taxing IRS Agents

Normally we’d be happy that IRS employees were feeling a bit frustrated. But this time we think they have every justification to be upset. The Chicago Tribune reports: The Treasury secretary, who oversees the IRS, didn’t pay all his taxes. Neither did five other top nominees for the Obama administration, or their spouses. Now, as Wednesday’s tax deadline looms, some Americans are wondering why they should comply with the arcane requirements of the Internal Revenue Service when top administration officials failed to do the same. Even some IRS employees are … More

Pentagon Should Worry About More Than Pirates

Selling his defense budget cuts at the Air Force War College today, Defense Secretary Robert Gates says, according to the AP, “the pirate drama over the last week helps prove his point about why the Pentagon should change its weapon-buying habits.” No one is more joyful about the Navy Seals rescue of Captain Richard Phillips then the Heritage family. But the threats our nation faces extends a bit beyond three pirates in the Gulf of Aiden. If China takes down our satellite system sometime in the future, will Gates shoot … More

Pics from Lafayette Square Tea Party

The Secret Service may have canceled the Treasury Department Tea Party, but the Lafayette Square rally is still going strong: This guy has been reading DHS reports:

Nuclear Waste is an Opportunity, Not a Problem

What’s one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. When it comes to nuclear waste, where the government sees a problem, Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions sees a dollar sign. And what’s best is that the government can’t stop them: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it doesn’t have the authority to prevent foreign radioactive waste from being imported into the United States. The NRC wrote in an April 9 letter to Reps. Jim Matheson (D-Utah) and Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.) that the Atomic Energy Act doesn’t distinguish between domestic and foreign waste. The … More

WaPo: Obama Health Care Talk Lacks “All Seriousness”

Cheerleading for his administration’s economic performance yesterday, President Barack Obama said: I absolutely agree that our long-term deficit is a major problem that we have to fix. … As I will discuss in a moment, the key to dealing with our deficit and debt is to get a handle on out-of-control health care costs … Fixing our health care system will certainly require resources, but in my budget, we’ve made a commitment to fully pay for reform without increasing the deficit, and we’ve identified specific savings that will make the … More

    Everyday is Tax Day

Congratulations! You made it! Tax day is finally here and you are free from filing your income tax returns for another year. Celebration is in order just for navigating the labyrinth that is the federal income tax code. While you celebrate finally being done with the arduous task of filing your returns, remember, just because you don’t have to do it again for another year, that doesn’t mean you aren’t paying taxes each and every day from now until then. Here is a partial list of the taxes we pay … More

    UN Dithers, North Korea Blusters

After a week of intense deliberations over North Korea’s missile launch, the UN Security Council (UNSC) opened its doors and emitted a mighty roar…of a mouse. The UNSC’s failure to defend its resolutions against Pyongyang’s unambiguous violation bodes ill for diplomatic efforts to prevent proliferation and denuclearize North Korea. China’s willingness to derail the international push to punish North Korea for its transgression should lay to rest perceptions of Beijing as a “responsible stakeholder.” It is also a stark reminder of the need for US missile defense at a time … More

EPA Finds Global Warming Dangerous, Proposes to Micromanage the Economy

Bureaucratic micromanagement of the economy, all in the name of fighting global warming, would likely be the end result of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) endangerment finding on greenhouse gases. The White House Office of Management and Budget completed its interagency review of the EPA’s proposed finding, and it is now a matter of time (tomorrow or next week) before the endangerment finding is officially released. In essence, the endangerment finding says that global warming and climate change pose a serious threat to public health and safety and thus almost … More
