  • Morning Bell: The Question That Didn't Get Asked

Yesterday before President Barack Obama’s 100 days news conference, the Commerce Department released data showing that the U.S. economy shrank at an annual rate of 6.1% in the January-March quarter. This comes on top of a report from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics released earlier this month showing that the U.S. has lost more than 1.2 million jobs since President Barack Obama was sworn into office. Yet despite all this bad economic news Obama claimed that his stimulus $787 billion deficit spending stimulus package “has already saved or created over 150,000 jobs.” While pressing Obama on a variety of national security questions, the White House press corps failed to ask: “Mr. President, if your administration is already claiming credit for jobs created in this economy, when can the American people start holding you accountable for all the jobs lost?”

Obama’s desire to escape all accountability for his economic policies was also on display earlier in the day when he told a town hall in Missouri: “We inherited a $1.3 trillion deficit. That wasn’t me.” Oh really? The Associated Press fact checked Obama’s claim and reports:

Congress controls the purse strings, not the president, and it was under Democratic control for Obama’s last two years as Illinois senator. Obama supported the emergency bailout package in President George W. Bush’s final months — a package Democratic leaders wanted to make bigger.

He’s persuaded Congress to expand children’s health insurance, education spending, health information technology and more. He’s moving ahead on a variety of big-ticket items on health care, the environment, energy and transportation that, if achieved, will be more enduring than bank bailouts and aid for homeowners.

The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated his policy proposals would add a net $428 billion to the deficit over four years, even accounting for his spending reduction goals. Now, the deficit is nearly quadrupling to $1.75 trillion.

The cost of Obama’s massive spending explosion is about to hit home. The Treasury Department announced yesterday that it is going to step up the issuing of 30-year bonds to cover the hundreds of billions of dollars the Obama administration is spending on bailouts and stimulus. A special advisory committee to the Treasury then warned, “Treasuries will probably not receive the same favorable demand treatment from either source over the coming quarters.” Translation: foreign and domestic investors are going to demand significantly higher interest rates in exchange for buying the avalanche of new bonds.

Higher interest rates will strangle our economic recovery. Congress and the President should do the opposite of what they apparently intend: They should cut taxes on productive activities, not increase them. They should cut spending, not increase it. And rather than increase government spending with new entitlements like a government-run health plan, they should reduce future entitlement benefits to give credit markets some confidence that U.S. policymakers have not entirely abandoned fiscal discipline.

Oh man.. all the obvious follow up questions that went unasked.

Emanuel did a great job screening real journalists and preventing any meaningful follow up questions. It was indeed a masterful performance. No real information was revealed, but a masterful performance none-the-less.

The country is missing GWB… at least he made things entertaining by mangling the language. Obama mangles the country.

When is Hannity going to do the waterboarding for charity?

After all that BIG talk of his, or is that just another example of cowardice dressed in big words to impress a fast shrinking minority?

Dear Morning bell: Political decisions/ that address The Basic American propblems/ are not a mystery. The mystery is-infact with all our woes, and since we are all in the same boat on our basic needs/ why is it by mistakes, planned/or made for servan'ts of The people, and for the people/ all way's never give an answer that either hidesthe truth, covers upthe truth or blames those who theyare supposed to protect. In My opinion the Answer is in The American People, And The country That is founded on moral, foundations for each, and every scenario.

I was a little taken back that President Obama did not blame the Bush Administration for the swine flu problem we have now.

    5. jmstout1 says:

Every day we see evidence that Obama's deficit spending economic plan is failing but the huge debt will remain.

When the smoke clears, the naive youthful voters who believed Obama's Pied Piper change dream will be the ones to pay.

At that time it will be difficult to blame George W. Bush any more (although they will try).

To the Obama voters – enjoy a mediocre life!

    6. Eugene Hoffman, Hous says:

It is now up to the Congress and Senate to save the REPUBLIC. They must stop spending period: they are the check valves; President Obama made no bones about who, or what he was during his campaign: He is a collectivist. Did anyone really think he was going to govern from the center, as Clinton did, or Mccain would have. Former president George Bush spent more than Former President Clinton, and the current administration left unchecked is going to make them look like ultra conservative right wingers. Where our are gutless Congressional, and Senatorial representatives,(on both sides of the aisle), when we need them: fellas our way of life is act stake; please stop this reckless spending. The only path spending leads too is devalued and worthless currency and the death and destruction of a nation.

    7. PDS, NC says:

WE ARE CERTAIN WE MAY ONLY HAVE HOURS BEFORE THEY DETONATE THE BOMB WHICH WILL KILL MILLIONS.

    10. J.C. Hughes, Texas says:

The following quote says it all.

WASHINGTON – "That wasn't me," President Barack Obama said on his 100th day in office … It actually was him — and the other Democrats controlling Congress the previous two years — who shaped a budget so out of balance… he backed the twilight Bush-era stimulus plan that made the deficit deeper, all before he took over and promoted spending plans that have made it much deeper still. (AP)

    11. PDM Louisiana says:

Why does not anyone point out that the Clinton Administration financial guru Robert Rubin's conversion of 30-year bonds into 180-day treasuries has exacerbated our country's financial peril at precisely this moment. The Rubin gambit created the Bubba budget surplus the Democrats are so fond of touting. AT WHAT COST? Now, as interest rates rise on the 30-year bonds, significant increases in interest rates must be expected on the treasuries maturing much more regularly. Get ready for the double-digit-whammy on inflation. This is not good news, folks.

    12. Ron, Derry NH says:

I suspect that there are only two scenario's possible to explain these shenanigans of economic ruin and cloud of mystery being perpetuated from the white house.

One is; Congress and Obama are clueless at economics due to poor education and or brainwashing since college days and are desperately using smoke and mirrors to mask the controlled chaos necessary to force socialism onto us.

Two is; Congress and Obama are brilliantly executing a coup over Americanism and independence to introduce socialism as they were tutored in College and are gladly using smoke and mirrors to mask the controlled chaos necessary to force socialism onto us.

Other than that I see no difference in their actions if they know what they are doing or if they don't know what they are doing.

This is a coup, not a mandated adjustment to the current economic climate.

    13. Patti, Las Vegas says:

re: US Treasury Bonds being issued. A question not asked is WHY MUST THE FED BUY THE BONDS? A follow-on question: why don't we see the "usual" buyers for our bonds? Seems to me that our Treasury bonds don't have perceived value. Scary.

    14. Mike Sheahen, Hickor says:

Quoting from "The Question That Didn't Get Asked":

"Congress and the President should do the opposite of what they apparently intend: They should cut taxes on productive activities, not increase them. They should cut spending, not increase it".

Hello! Anybody home? Obama and his Comrades aren't about to do the opposite of what they (evidently are doing and) intend! They are power and money-grabbing government elitist and statist Socialists, with such an agenda, despite their simultaneously denying it yet showing it through their words and actions as it suits that political expedience and agenda!

So let's disabuse of the wishing for things which government elitists, statists, and Socialists (including Obama and his Comrades) aren't about to do, so as many of us as possible can see and realize that Obama and his Comrades aren't about to do the opposite of what they (evidently are doing and) intend, especially since the opposite would violate their "Never let a crisis go to waste; what I mean by that is you can do things you couldn't do before" (same as Rahm Emmanuel said), and doesn't and wouldn't propagate and perpetuate government dependence and government dependants!

After all, if Obama and his Comrades were the opposite of the government elitist, statist, and Socialist power and money-grabbers they are, they would do the opposite of what they're doing; so of course they wouldn't be imposing and entrenching their Socialism, including through their efforts to have our Constitution "remedied" as Obama has already said; so also of course we wouldn't be losing our freedoms, resources, and security to their government elitist and statist assault, and that means, among other such things, they wouldn't be so promoting, propagating, cultivating, and perpetuating government dependence and dependants which are "made to order" for such government elitists and statists to get into, increase, and stay in power!

HERE IS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW: WHEN IS THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY GOING TO JUMP UP AND DOWN ON T.V. AND RADIO AND AGGRESSIVELY ATTACK THE STUPID ANTICS THIS ADMINISTRATION IS PULLING!

DON'T THEY HAVE ANY MONEY? DON'T THEY HAVE ANY GUTS? I KNOW FROM EVERY ONE I TALK TO THEY THINK THIS COUNTRY IS GOING TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET! AND WONDER IF IT CAN EVER RECOVER!

I am 62 and I am looking forward to collecting my Ss in July. I was worried about my children and grandchildren's future, but it is the 20 to 40 year olds who put this Hollywood star inoffice, let them worry about their children's future. The gimme, gimme and I deserve generation will be the ones who suffer most. Let them enjoy the legacy that "their" elected president is leaving them.

    18. Patricia Hefferan MA says:

I am overwhelmed with the outstanding ability of Mr. Obama to take over our government and capitalistic enterprises with such extraordinary ease. Our nation is a nation of sheep. Our country is sinking into a morass of unspeakable debt, our rights are being violated, the government grows ever bigger and my daughter, a devout fan of Mr. Obama, expressed a concern that in going through her spring clothes in the attic she didn't have enough closet space.

We need a vibrant spokesperson for the Conservative/Republican Party. A good choice would be Michelle Bachman. She is a splendid, passionate speaker and should be promoted.

    19. David Sayers, NC says:

Komrades, everything that the chairman does is well planned and orchestrated,in other words it's all rigged. His town hall type meetings with the folks, or is it volks, his factory visits with the workers, newsconferences when only the chosen are permitted to ask the very soft questions and even the election. It was all rigged. Remember when he said government is the only answer and the pubitburo gave Chrysler billions of our dollars, well he was wrong on that one. They flushed all our money down the toilet and GM is about to do the same thing. This administration without a doubt, is full of the most clueless infantile bunch of marxist morons to ever have come down the pike. Remember, there were 55 million of us that didn't vote for this guy and as time goes on you can bet that this number will increase.

    20. Mike, Hickory, NC says:

One thing about all this Socialist burying living and subsequent generations under freedom and prosperity-killing government control, spending, and debt is, for example, there aren't really any so-called "Social Security accounts" containing money, in individual's names, which individual's have supposedly paid into them like bank savings accounts, etc. Indeed, for generations now, despite any misleading politician and bureaucrat claims and accounting tricks to the contrary, what generations have paid and/or continue to pay has gone and continues to go into the (quote) "General fund" which of course means that, regardless of when or how politicians may claim or declare it will be or must be "raided" to pay for anything, the money's gone before it gets there anyway, especially when there's government deficit spending and debt to make it even more so!

So as for any of us either having the attitude or even saying "at least I got my 'Social Security'" and/or "to heck with whether anybody or any other generation gets theirs", that is at best falling for what's being foisted and perpetrated by Leftist politicians and bureaucrats and at worst harboring or speaking a short-sighted orientation toward self which fails to see not only the unsustainable Socialist seeds of it's own destruction which is Social(ist) Security, but also how and what, through such Socialism, such government costs all of us, both tangibley and intangibly, both as individuals and beyond ourselves.

    21. John Ring says:

President O'Bama & his team are always short on facts. I doubt if any of them completed an economics class. Soon the years will be known as the O'Bama Depression.

    22. Barb -mn says:

      Ken Jarvis –

"provided a tax cut to 95 percent of all working families.”

"PROVIDED" What???? $15??? So our children will suffer ungodly taxes? It amounts to NOTHING but increased deficit.

“We began by passing a Recovery Act that has already saved or created over 150,000 jobs and provided a tax cut to 95 percent of all working families.”

Well, which of them did the government "already" do, Ken? Save or create jobs? It's one or the other yet he couldn't tell us which? What incompetence. Who's covering the wages to these government jobs created? The $15 dollars the government just gave us? Not to consider the rising cost of living? Plus tax increases at every government level?

The BEST part was at the end – “And that’s why I’m always amused when I hear these criticisms of, oh, Obama wants to grow government.

      No.

      I would love a nice,

      lean portfolio to deal with.

He didn't suggest this during his campaign. AT ALL!!! The words he speaks communicably, speak loud and clear of big government. What he has done and continues to do, the money he has already accumulated and what he plans to steal is all BIG GOVERNMENT. Every private sector job in the free market has either closed down or THREATENED by his presidency, To eventually be bribed by his presidency to result in government ownership. He wants tax payers to pay the consequences of the irresponsible from birth to adulthood and beyond. Instead of holding them to their own consequences. What's fair, Ken? Why won't you acknowledge this?

By the way, we are not financially rich. We struggle to live independently. All due to the cost of GOVERNMENT SOCIALISM in this state and getting worse while the feds take more. We believe in freedom. Freedom of all who reside in America…legally? Who would know there were illegals if they were all doing for themselves? The government promotes, provokes, expects civil discord. We believe any personal struggle is ours as human beings to deal with. As this is what the government has expected of our immigrant grandparents and us and what we became accustomed to in accordance with American principles, rules and civil laws, within the abilities of ALL HUMAN LIFE! Not the government's. This is expected of all, as all human life has the instinct to survive. All human beings have the ability to use their brains, to think FREELY, to LEARN, communicate, feel, hear, see, ALL, EVERY SINGLE HUMAN LIFE with or without race, creed or culture, using their INDIVIDUAL ability, in their own way. . . If anybody expects less of anybody's human ability to take these human responsibilities mentioned under the constitution and the declaration of independence, are either racist, bias, discriminative or GOVERNMENT! Unfortunately, you're an example yourself of one accomplishment of government. Everything you speak of is either about the leader saying something that can be counterattacked by his own actions or Bush… Same thing over and over again, everybody on your side including you, lost your ability to think for yourself. Exactly what the GOVERNMENT WANTS. When thinking of America and FREEDOM, it stands without saying what people can do for THIS country is DO FOR THEMSELVES. FREEDOM FROM GOVERNMENT. What we WANT KEN, if you are able to understand with your limited thinking ability, is America's freedoms, liberties, principles, values, built up not destroyed by the current government who's only mentality is to steal from others to give to those they, VICTIMIZE, SYMPATHIZE AND EXPECT LESS from.

"No. I would love a nice lean portfolio to deal with." Means nothing but APPEASEMENT for you and the rest of the indoctrinated. Actions speak louder then words.

"But that’s not the hand that’s been dealt us.” Obama wasn't dealt a hand, he created it and took it by choice. Save yourself, Ken! Every action of Obama is inefficient, inadequate, destructive, in opposition to what America stands for, or once stood for. His words are many and many are deceptive. Instead of inspiring, he weakens the country and her people. Instead of inspiring people to opportunity he blocks the door!

    23. Billy Dilsaver, Beau says:

These are all very good comments and, I am relieved to see that there are people of like mind who are willing to speak out, given what has happend to people who speak out, ie. Joe the plumber. Having said that, I will fight and die, if neccesary for this country. The gall of this communist to think he has the power or the right to remake the country.

    24. Ken in Santa Barbara says:

      Barb-Mn,

It is not good but expected to see that HF allows comments about the thinking capabilities of others who choose to speak on this site.

To quote you "When thinking of America and FREEDOM, it stands without saying what people can do for THIS country is DO FOR THEMSELVES. FREEDOM FROM GOVERNMENT. What we WANT KEN, if you are able to understand with your limited thinking ability, is America’s freedoms, liberties, principles, values, built up not destroyed by the current government who’s only mentality is to steal from others to give to those they, VICTIMIZE, SYMPATHIZE AND EXPECT LESS from.

This country will not be judged by how it treats it's wealthy but by how it treats it's poor.

I couldn't disagree with you more on what "we" want based on your treatise above. You happen to speak for a minority today. A minority that once had control and by the power vested in that control could not bring itself to be seated in power again. Today your vagueness and degrading comments are the cry of a faction that cannot work with a new majority to bring stability to a shaky and troubled country.

Freedom from government (regulation) is the start of our downfall. *I couldn't care less where you want to get sidetracked on who started what. I wasn proactive action to put the thieves out of control and our investments in the future on a rock steady course. You had best start listening and take up reading from sources other than this Conn at HF.

I am prepared to allow the current administration the leeway we gave the last administration. I believe it is the way it is done in America. I don't buy that all in this country think for themselves, often it is confused with thinking ONLY of themselves. I don't have a clear idea of where you stand on that. It has been said that in life It's not the duration… but the donation (Corrie Ten Boom).

Please don't think you are speaking for all of us. Some of us don't want you to speak for them about freedom, liberty, victims or sympathy

There is another Ken in the House….and I think he is trying

his best to communicate without degrading your thinking abilities.
