  • Real Green Jobs

It’s not 5 million jobs, but they are real, well-paying jobs, and they’re not going anywhere:

“Toshiba America Nuclear Energy will add 194 jobs in Mecklenburg County after receiving a grant from state officials this morning worth as much as $4.88 million over nine years. The company will open a national project management and engineering center in Charlotte, according to a release from the office of N.C. Gov. Beverly Perdue. The jobs, expected to be created over five years, will pay average salaries of $122,037 a year.

Toshiba America Nuclear Energy was established by Japan’s Toshiba Corp. last year to capture some of the increasing interest in new nuclear power plants in this country. Utilities, including Progress Energy and Duke Energy, are proposing to build more than 30 plants to meet growing demand for electricity.

The company is the primary contractor for the construction of two nuclear reactors planned in Texas. The company initially considered sites there and in Northern Virginia, where it is based, for the new operation before cutting the list to Charlotte and Atlanta.”

More importantly, and unlike the federal governments green jobs initiative, this will not destroy more jobs than it creates. Thanks to NEI for the pointer.

It depends on the definition of "green job." To me designing and building nuclear power plants is the "greenest" of them all. Nuclear power should be the basic energy source for the country, replacing, eventually, coal and gas. At the present time the start of nuclear is hamstringed by the political power of the coal industry and its unions. Oil and gas must be the transitional power sources, as new nuclear units are designed and built. Drill, baby, drill! If the French could go nuke, safely, thirty years ago, so can we, starting NOW! VIVA LA FRANCE.

    5. Buck, Winchester VA says:

maybe if we could get rid of these monopoly energy providers who have a strangle hold on American communities and pay CEOs more than $30 million dollars a year we could have some real green investment? How many jobs could we give working people for what these companies pay a worthless CEO?

It is great that Toshiba America is engaging in developing nuclear power in the US. The environmentalists and the federal government killed off the American nuclear industry. I am not hopeful, however. To get license and proceed without litigation will be a miracle. We have to destroy the power of the extremists in the environmental groups. It is no longer a question of degree of prosperity, it is a matter of our survival.

Toshiba – no integrity. Would have respect had they not held their hand out. Who knows what the next step of government is? Just another set-up if you ask me.

Obama wants to help (coded word) everyone out with everyone else's money (he steals).

    8. Barb -mn says:

Oh, that sure is a hefty salary! Who set it? Government or the company?

    9. Sean Keller, Boston says:

There is no question that the green economy is going to be the next great driving force in innovation, economic growth and job creation.
