  • Morning Bell: The Audacity of Hypocrisy

President Barack Obama may have written a best-selling book with the word “audacity” in the title, but so far Education Secretary Arne Duncan is the member of his administration that best embodies that word. Secretary Duncan wrote in the Wall Street Journal this week “When parents recognize which schools are failing to educate their children, they will demand more effective options for their kids. They won’t care whether they are charters, non-charters or some other model. … We must close the achievement gap by pursuing what works best for kids, regardless of ideology. In the path to a better education system, that’s the only test that really matters.”

These lines were published under Duncan’s name a mere 16 days after he sent letters to 200 District of Columbia low-income families informing them that he was taking back the $7,500 in scholarship money that the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program had previously awarded them. And those letters were sent months after a Department of Education study showed the students in the scholarship program the longest performed at reading level approximately 1.5 to 2 full school years ahead of students who applied but were not lucky enough to be admitted to the program.

The evidence is in. The D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program works. But instead of “pursuing what works best for kids, regardless of ideology” Duncan did the exact opposite. He moved to kill the program by sending the rescission letters mentioned above. The Washington Post explained why:

It’s clear, though, from how the destruction of the program is being orchestrated, that issues such as parents’ needs, student performance and program effectiveness don’t matter next to the political demands of teachers’ unions.

Duncan is not the only politician audaciously putting politics and teacher union dollars ahead of students and what works. The annual Heritage Foundation survey of Congress and school choice shows that 38% of Members of the 111th Congress sent a child to private school at one time. According to our analysis, if Members who exercised school choice for their own children had recently voted in favor of protecting the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program, it would have been protected from Secretary Duncan’s efforts to kill it. Most gallingly, the Senator who offered the Amendment to make the scholarship program vulnerable, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) not only went to private school himself, but he also sends his own children to private school.

While Members of the 111th Congress have embraced school choice for their own families, they should also support policies that give other families the opportunity to choose their children’s schools. All families should have the opportunity to send their children to a school that is safe and offers a quality education.

Just another stab in the heart of the parents and children that want to succeed. We can change this by voting out the so-called representatives up there now, starting in the next election cycle. I just hope that not everyone says that their rep is OK and vote for them again. Get new blood up there and move the lobbist out. Will be hard but it can be done. Look at the Founders of this Nation, glad they didn't say it was just to hard to win our Freedom. We have to quit worrying about our security and spend more time fighting for our Liberty. Get rid of the Eduacation Union, that is the cancer that is holding the children (our future) back. Way past time that the folk up there in DC start talking the talk and walking the walk, stop the so-called Do as I say and Not as I do mentality.

I agree that the members of congress, and the President send their children to private schools, why not give others the same chance. I, too, when living in Norfolk, had to send my children to private schools as the Norfolk schools were a disaster. They are not safe.

Wow, Ken you are clueless, big deal about the credit card rates how the hell is that going to help the people that already can't pay for them and most of those people were irresponsible to begin with like the people who bought houses they couldn't afford. Osama should be concentrating on more pressing matters, ah but wait he is, like bankrupting this country with cap and tax and his pie in the sky energy policy. GET REAL!!

    6. Ed Brown - Louisvill says:

The new education of today rests on two intellectual pillars. Its use, or misuse, of science and its appeal to the educational philosophy of John Dewey.

The objectives of Dewey’s educational theory and his general philosophy was that of the development of an educational theory that would be wholly consistent with Darwinism and The Origin of Species. In this sense Dewey saw education as a major force in social reconstruction.

Joshua Herring, in his article, “Who will save the children?’ asks the question, “Where are they going with all this?” Well it isn’t toward the individualism that Christianity teaches. “The Christian idea of vocation , that unique role that each Christian plays in the cosmic drama of creation and redemption, is the one root of the Western idea of individualism. It was not, in its origins, a matter of self constituting autonomy but of living out the singular, God-given destiny that is every human life.”

    7. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

This is just another way for the socialist to get what they want. If we keep people down in public school and stop them from moving to a good school we create an ingnorant scoiety, much easier to get them to do what you want. At the same time a lot of blame must go to the parents. They do not take an active part in education and work with their children to do better.

I do not care if anyone thinks I want obama to fail, I want the dems and idiots out of the whit house and the sooner the better.

    8. Jim@Redding,CA says:

The only thing that is consistant about the current administration is their IN-

CONSISTANCY. Like all liberals, the guid-

ing rule is: "for us there are no rules".

This is the most central FLAW in liberal

ideology: A DISTINCT LACK OF CHARACTER DUE

TO NO MORAL VALUES OR PRINCIPLES… As we

know all too well, "you shall know them by

their deeds", and each and every time, the

words coming out of their mouth belie the

      actual things they DO!!

This is where our departure from "one

nation under God" has brought us. Maybe

it's time we got back to our roots rather

than arrogantly revelling in the absurd

notion that "the world has changed too much for that"…

    9. Jamie says:

Ken, they did report this, and since the change won't go into effect till next year, credit card company's are hiking their rates to record highs this year. Please learn to listen to the whole broadcasts and details! Obama's plans so far have turned us upside down and inside out, and it's not going to get any better.

As to our Children, I pulled mine from our public schools and will home-school them till our Union forces their politics into our community. Then we'll sue. Until we start telling our districts they cannot hire Union or we will pull our kids, they will continue dumbing them down, taking our money and patting us on the head while our children graduate nearly illiterate and unprepared for competition in the real world. Parents should be raising up in anger, but they too have been dumbed down to think there is nothing we can do.

    10. mary genovese capacc says:

    12. Gene in Northern VA says:

Do you think that Duncan is really a hypocrite? I know what he did and his words are completely opposite, but is this because of him or because of Obama? I personally suspect that he believes what he wrote in the Journal, but that he was not given a choice with respect to killing the scholarship program. The scholarship program was working, was cheaper then per-student costs in public schools and should be expanded, not eliminated. I just wonder whether Duncan is the problem. I suspect the problem if much higher on the totem pole. If that is the case then we should question whether Duncan should be serving in the Obama Administration, but I am convinced the hypocrisy starts at the very top and some good people are going to get unnecessarily tainted by not standing up for their own principles.

    13. Barbara, Florida says:

How much longer before the revolution begins?

    14. Ben C, Ann Arbor, MI says:

Ken – your comments are fine but understand that there will be people denied credit cards when the government controls interest rates. Your solution will be for the governement to enter the credit card business. And we know what happens when "the government" decides to enter private enterprise. Sonmething about making "The American Dream of Home Ownership" available to all through lowering lending criteria comes to mind.

    15. David Sayers, NC says:

Being hipocrites is what leftist democrates do,thats their job. If this had been a republican,it would have hit the fan and Al and Jesse would have been on every TV network screaming racism. These thugs that have taken over might have impressive resumes and tons of education but, quite simply, they are dumber than dirt. Every American citizen has the right to the best education possible. A lot of hopes and dreams have been dashed because of this moronic decision, wonder what the DC rep is doing about it.

And I see that Komrade Ken still has his head buried in Pravda.

    16. Shirley Arndt says:

The greater problem in regard to the education of our children in public funded schools is that of indoctrination in Socialism/Marxism. Our children are also taught to hate America. It isn't by chance that over 50% of the people have far left political philosophies.

Obama is ushering in Socialism/Marxism and he has been trained and funded by people who want to bring about the one world order.

He wants children to be forced to attend the public schools because he is going to initiate federal programs which dictate more Socialistic/Marxist teaching. One of his stimulus programs is that of federal funding for constructing new public schools. Here to fore schools were built by the local governments. This is another way of capturing our schools for furthuring far left political indoctrination.

    17. Frank W., New Mexico says:

What amazes me is how they issued the report about the quality of education the kids were getting by using vouchers on April 3rd, three days after Congress had voted to do away with the voucher system. Transperancy? I wonder if anyone in Congress read this bill before voting. I can't understand why this administration still has a 54% approval rating.

    18. Judith of The Late, says:

I think it is obvious that you can see the handiwork of Mr. Bill Ayers in this total reorganization of the US education system to reflect Socialist/Marxist thought.

Remember what Mr. O said in one of his books, that he chose his friends carefully. You bet he did. Now it is paying off for him. What are friends for, anyway?

    19. E Paul Lian, Scotts says:

Try as I may, I just can't find a single issue where I agree with the Obama administration. This school voucher decision in the D.C area is just another example. I consider myself a fair and objective man, what country am I living in where recent polls indicate most Americans feel our country is on "the right track"? I truly don't get it.

    22. Rob, Knoxville says:

Why would anyone be surprised? Congress frequently lives by different rules than it envorces on citizens. I'd bet children of parents in the country illegally will get a 'choice.'

    23. Wallyblu, Zion, IL says:

If every parent was givin the money that is spent per student and could use it for private school tuition the public schools in this country would be out of business and the members of the teachers union would have to look for real jobs.

      The Audacity of Hypocrisy……

That's what Morning Bell is all about.

    25. Mike, Hickory, NC says:

In this case of the Left's "audacity of hypocrisy", such as in but certainly not limited to this case of education, what we're actually confronted by is yet another case of the Left making audacious hypocrites of themselves while they get away with having such control, and using in this case also a diversionary tactic, to have people blinded and distracted by such smoke and mirrors and thus being misled to where their "Liberal"/"Progressive" way leads to a dumbed-down and accordingly dependant populace under government elitist, statist, Communist/Socialist control and rule.

Yes, in this case it's another diversionary "smoke and mirrors" tactic, being foisted upon the people by the government elitist and statist Left, their bureaucratic beneficiaries, and their Comrades and accomplices, including in academia.

But we, the people, who refuse to be so blinded and distracted, do in fact see that, just for one thing among others, if we, the people (who are supposed to be in control of government in the U.S, not the other way around) see to at least sufficiently significant across-the-board (meaning for all of us) cuts in taxes (not to mention government regulation and thus also the cost of it in taxes and more), even if we're forced to do so through a 10 or 15% "flat tax" (as opposed to anything else, including any "Consumption" or "National sales tax" since, like a "progressive" tax code, they can still be used to buy votes and hide things), parents wouldn't be so dependant upon government programs such as "the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program", for the simple reason that parents would thus be likewise significantly more empowered to see to the better education of their offspring, particularly considering the fact that education of offspring is in fact the natural law for and function of parents, etc, not government, especially in what's supposed to be a free society and in order for it to remain free.

Of course, every time anyone even proposes any such actually real significant tax cuts, Leftist government elitist and statist politicians, etc, demagogue and pander, and their followers parrot, "tax cuts for the rich!". However, as history, and more, shows and verifies to this day, the fact of the matter is that's because things such as actually real and truly at least sufficiently significant across the board tax cuts have resulted and would again result in both increased government revenue and the people, including parents and their offspring, being that much less dependant upon government elitist and statist politicians, bureaucrats, and their accomplices and cronies.

Meanwhile, however, the Left continues to get away with having such control and using such diversionary tactics in order for them to have and get more control, while they make such audacious hypocrites of themselves while they're at it, including through their making us pay through taxes and regulation for their paychecks and their sending their offspring to better schools, while they simultaneously undermine the ability of the people to afford and send their offspring to better schools.

    26. sharon J says:

All obama talked about on the campaign trail was how important education is to our kids. Of course in Chicago, him and arnie did nothing to help the failing schools there. It was what the unions wanted, the kids were not important. The unions in wasington dc are again dictating the education of these kids. Just yesterday obama got his mug on tv saying how important education is. What a hypocrite! I can only guess because him and arnie are in the "elite" grp (you know the rich people he so hates)their kids can't be subjected to the union's way of running the run down schools. The money frm the union dues must go for presidential campaigns and the likes instead of improving education. Does anybody see the evil oozing frm this president and administration? It is so sad.

    27. Dwana Townsend says:

I believe Shirley and Julie both hit the nail on the head!!! I also believe this is just another distraction to the true agenda. Ever see the movie the "Tail that Wagged the Dog". So much goes on behind the scenes and the true agendas are masked with language that can be interperted anyway they see fit in the future. All a huge conspiracy theory that was masterminded well before this election, but certainly one might argue maybe certain indivduals have been groomed for a very long time and the timing was ripe!!!

Ken must think that Obama is using his money to fix the credit card problem. Please wake up. It is your money, it is our money. He has already spent trillions of dollars nationalizing banks, GM and Chrysler. We do not have those trillions. We are borrowing some from China and freely printing the rest. How long do you think this house of cards is going to last?

Every time I read your comments, it is purely partisan rhetoric with no independent thinking on your part. Americans must be concerned that their lives and the lives of their children and grandchildren are being ruined. Bush started it but Obama has accelerated it to hypersonic speed. You better get ready. In a couple of years, inflation and interest rates will be so high it wouldn't matter what the credit card companies will be doing. You wouldn't be able to afford it. Chinese will dominate out foreign policy because they hold $Trillion of the US debt. If you didn't know, the Chinese has doubled their gold bullion holding to over 1000 tons. 36. Richard Morales, Cal says:

I wish you Heritage people would get your history and facts right. Your opinion that public schools are inadequate and don’t offer rights to choose is not only false, it doesn’t square with history. Unless you are stuck with the “don’t bother me with facts, my mind is made up” attitude, let me offer a lesson in history. Look up Ordinance of 1787, and Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act 1862. Finally read about the history of public education in U.S. When you have done so, you’ll see the folly of your “hypocritical” accusations about those opposed to vouchers. Why do you think that not in any Congress – from 1718 through the 110th – has there ever been a bill to repeal those laws supporting public education on the grounds it violates a constitutional right?

Also, you might want to ask yourself: If public education is so awful, how is it that because public schools and college produce 85% of the nation’s grads, we have those people as some of the top scientists, CEOs, lawyers, doctors, scholars in the world? If you really believe that having to attend your neighborhood public school violates your right to choose, why don’t you do what my dad did: paid his taxes and sent me to private school anyway – on a $5,000 a year income (1959), recognizing his taxes were going to the greater good of providing an education for others, and realizing that those schooled with his tax dollars would ultimately result in a generally better, more knowledgeable society in which I could prosper? If you really believe your rights are violated, why don’t you refuse to pay the 15% of your taxes that goes to public education? Go to jail for tax evasion by the thousands and begin a real protest … but no, you’d rather hear your selves bicker and bellyache. Who are the real hypocrites? I wonder.
