  • Morning Bell: Not Just a Stereotype

This past Friday the Iowa Supreme Court rewrote the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples. Justifying their rejection of the argument that “the optimal environment for children is to be raised within a marriage of both a father and a mother,” Justice Mark Cady wrote: “The research … suggests that the traditional notion that children need a mother and a father to be raised into healthy adjusted adults is based more on stereotype than anything else.”

First of all, the court is just wrong on the facts. Children whose parents marry and stay married have been found to have better health and are less likely to be depressed, are less likely to repeat a grade in school, and have fewer developmental problems than other children. If poor women who have children out of wedlock were married to the actual fathers of their children, nearly two-thirds would be lifted out of poverty immediately.

But let’s leave the social science aside for a moment. The real story here is the court’s dismissal of the traditional family as a mere stereotype which unmasks the left’s true agenda here: the rejection the nuclear family as the core of civil society. Heritage’s Matthew Spalding explains:

What is happening is no minor adjustment… It does not expand marriage; it alters its core meaning, for to redefine marriage so that it is not intrinsically related to the relationship between fathers, mothers, and children formally severs the institution from its nature and purpose. Expanding marriage supposedly to make it more inclusive, no matter what we call the new arrangement, necessarily ends marriage as we now know it by remaking the institution into something different: a mere contract between any two individuals.

And as the New York Times reported last week, the sanctity of contracts are under assault everywhere. Raising kids today is a challenge even for “stereotypical” mothers and fathers. As mother of three and syndicated columnist Rebecca Hagelin details in her new book, 30 Ways in 30 Days to Save Your Family, often it seems as though popular culture seems to want to turn your children against you. But Hagelin also offers a practical 30-day plan to help all busy moms and dads fight back. 30 Ways in 30 Days to Save Your Family is filled with simple steps that parents can take to help their children become healthy adjusted adults.  Because it isn’t just parents who are hurt by decisions like the one last week in Iowa, it is also our kids who are being bombarded by a contaminated culture.  Lucky for America, Hagelin’s book hits the stores today.

I can not say for sure, but I do not think the Constitution gives anyone the right to marry. The courts are supposed to interpit laws, not make them. These justices need to be removed from the bench.

When the Bible is read you can easily see what happened in two instances were same sex morality was justified and put on public dispaly, they were destroyed by God and all in an instant. Do we want the same to happen to us???? I guess the justices have not read the Bible or do not care about the Word of God. All I can say one day we all will stand before Him and confess our sins, and proclaim Him to be the King of Kings.

As with everything being done to our country and constitution, by the Democrat party, we must not lash out, verbaly, in retaliation. We need to join our collective, but positive, thoughts, hold fast to our belief that: conservative government, based upon our belief in GOD, the inalienable rights he handed down to us, and the reasons our forefathers founded America, are correct.

If we rise up in anger, then we restrict our ability to think clearly on how to correct the problem and eliminate the source of irritation.

As long as we stand back in the shadows and gripe about the situation instead of coming forward, in union, to protest these brazen attempts to sell us out, will we stop the carnage to our country and our people.

    3. John Marshall UK says:

You only have to look at the mess that has been imposed by a socialist government with social engineering in the UK to know that the traditional family is the best way to bring up children. Do not copy the bad example of the UK. We now have the highest rate of teenage pregnancies of the whole EU and the highest rate of single parent families who cannot cope with their life in poverty due to their chosen lifestyles of expecting government to supply housing because of their children. It is too late to find after the birth that government does not have any housing. Government is to blame in the UK for the social engineering imposed to gain extra votes. This has helped to cause the problems. This is no way to run a country!

UN Fails to Condemn North Korea's Missile Launch – Well, are we surprised? One can only wonder what would have happened if Ronald Reagan were the President. First, the Koreans would not have launched the missile because Reagan had the leadership gravitas to keep our adversaries on their toes. Would he shoot it down or wouldn't he would be the question of the day? Second, if the North Koreans would have launched I believe he would have shot it down and that would have made several statements.

First, America will protect itself and its allies. Second, America has the technology to shoot down missiles.

Ah, President Reagan you were a leader par excellence. We sadly miss you and your able cohort PM Margaret Thatcher. In times like these you really appreciate true leadership rather than the counterfeits parading around the world these days.

    9. rebecca kaminski says:

I agree with Floyd, yet, I wish to say further: IF 'heritage-minded' 'Christians' had been practicing what they currently gripe about years ago this world would be in a much better place.

For example: A young girl, pregnant, out of wedlock, was shunned and cast out INSTEAD of being shown Christian love and mentoring by those 'church' women. A real milestone. The young girl was Madeline Murray O'Hare.

The ad hominem mentality of the neocons is just a way of rousing the uneducated/mislead mass/mob to keep the pundits, and their enterprises, greased. The questionnaires (Heritage sends out) are so insulting how they are worded/spun. I'm absolutely amazed by them.

      It's JUST an industry.

So, why is this marriage partner criteria where it is today? Never mind.

    10. Richard cancemi says:

All aspects of the USA: Traditionalism, our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, Judeo-Christian values, Capitalism, Individualism, and the Sovereignty of our Nation are all under constant attack by the Fascist-Socialist Left, masquerading as Democrats.

They would have us all living in a Godless, Socialist State without morals. We are to "believe" in the State and govern our lives according to "Legality" not morality!

If we don't wake up , we will be gathered into the 'Collective" and live to serve the state and not the state serve us!

    11. Josh Peterson says:

Marriage is not and should not be managed by the government. By granting government authority to define the religious institution of marriage–whether as a man and a woman or any other arrangement–we've created the current situation. The solution is to challenge the government's oversight of marriage before the courts, and to remove all government oversight of the institution: no marriage licenses, no legal benefits, etc. Only then will we be able to force marriage to return to its traditional form.

    12. TONY-SEWELL,NEW JERS says:

I CAN SEE KIDS GOING TO SCHOOL NOW AND ASKING EACH OTHER ABOUT THEIR PARENTS. QUESTIONS LIKE

"HOW COME JOHNNY HAS TWO DADS" OR "TWO MOMS".

OR "WHICH OF MARY'S MOMS WILL TAKE US TO SOCCER PRACTICE".

YOU WILL SEE MORE HOMOSEXUAL AND LESBIAN COUPLES

IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS SINCE THE KIDS WILL BE LEARNING WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT BY LOOKING AT PARENTS

      LIKE THEY DO TODAY.

I BELEIVE THAT CIVILZATIONS THAT TOLERATE THIS NONSENSE HAVE BEEN DESTROYED ,IE, SODOM AND GOMMORAH, POMPEII, ETC.

I THINK THERE IS SOMETHING MENTALLY WRONG WITH A MALE DESIRING ANOTHER MALE WITH NO DESIRE OR APPRECIATION FOR WHAT AN AWFUL WORLD IT WOULD BE WITHOUT WOMEN.

WE NEED TO STAND FIRM WHAT CONSTITUTES MARRIAGE

      FOR OURSELVES AND CHILDREN.

    13. Jonathan - Williamsb says:

Some people are too smart for the rest of us. They seem to have a sense of complexity most of us do not possess. Mother, father, children: family. Sometimes a parent fails, sometimes children fail, sometimes family fails. Failure does not mean a stereo-type is broken, or wrong or unfair. Same-sex couples can moan and groan about being faulted for being a same-sex couple. It is a bargain they make, just like the bargain woman and man make. Living together with children is not 'the Bird Cage'. It is hell and usually, it is asked for and planned for. Asking the government, demanding the government, to make your hell real, reflects the empty-headedness of those smart people. Why invite the stinking camel into your tent?

    14. Charles, Wisconsin says:

I appreciate your efforts to keep me informed.

However, it takes greater courage to lead with positive ideas than to criticize the work of others.

Yes, we all have our ideals, and we may disagree on some things, but how we move forward is by having a vision, risking failure, admitting limited perspectives.

I want to hear WHAT SMALL STEPS CAN WE TAKE TOGETHER THAT WILL MAKE THIS A BETTER WORLD FOR ALL.

My mother, at the dinner table, would like me to see her as and example of good choices and encouraging words and supportive actions.

      Let's follow her example.

    15. J.C. Hughes, Texas says:

Are we now to expect that sexual deviants be recognized and sanctioned as wholesome parental figures? I give up! This is not diversity. It's forcing social acceptance of lewd behavior.

    16. Lou - Harrisburg, OR says:

It seems that a primary reason that human procreation involves a male and a female is that it takes both sexes with the attributes that each brings to the relationship to successfully raise a child and bring that child to its best. Oh, yes, there are many examples of this "formula" not working – but it works much better than to two same sex beings raising a child – and it is absolutely impossible for two same sex beings to procreate. A woman brings certain distinct traits to the child, as does a male.

If the state thinks it must be involved, I suggest the state get out of the marriage control game and leave that to the churches. If the state must exact some kind of fee for licensing, let that licensing be for civil unions that cover both sides of the relationship issue.

    17. Duane Phinney Pensa says:

Obama has agreed to sign the UN human rights treaty.

A few tid bits in this horrible United Nations human rights treaty:

      1. The best interest of the child principle would give the government the ability to override every decision made by every parent.

      2. A child's "right to be heard" would allow him (or her) to seek governmental review of every parental decision.

      3. Teaching children about Christianity in schools has been held to be out of compliance with the CRC. Allowing parents to opt their children out of sex education has been held to be out of compliance with the CRC.

      4. Children would have the right to reproductive health information and services, including abortions, without parental knowledge or consent.

**"Where the child has a right fulfilled by the government, the responsibilities shift from parents to the government," Farris said. "The implications of all this shifting of responsibilities is that parents no longer have the traditional roles of either being responsible for their children or having the right to direct their children."

This is just the beginning, you can go to the UN web site to research the whole treaty.

    18. gon4beer, VA says:

While I'm on board w/ most issues @ THF, I can't support devoting a lot of energy to this issue. First of all, no one chooses to be gay-~10-15% of humans are just born that way-one of my family members for instance. Second-while children certainly benenfit from being raised in a traditional mother/father household, what's most important to their self esteem and self concept is that they are raised in a structured loving and nurturing environment-this certainly doesn't preclude gay parents from being able to raise chldren-just look at divorce rates in this country and please tell me that a traditional set of parents is always the best for kids-your article mentions that kids raised in families that get married and stay married do better in many areas, but w/ divorce rates being as high as they are, would you think it to be worse for a kid to be raised in loving home w/ gay parents instead of being in an environment of constant hostility? There are many more important issues than this to focus on-let the states decide what they want to do on this issue-isn't that the way my pocket Constitution reads? Thanks for all the good work you do-I send in a yearly contribution (thank you Sean Hannity) and will continue to do so.

    20. Dorothy Morgan, Okla says:

I'm so proud…..my state has a 58% divorce rate and the highest teen-age pregnancy rate in the nation and the highest proportion of Republican

voters, more churches per capita, and the lowest

pay per capita of any state, and the highest death rate of anywhere. I'm sure I've left out many other virtues….. Add to all this a severe recession brought on by the wealthy bankrobbers…and you have a situation deadly for the children. Gripping about people who wish to make families and care for children just seems way out of reality for me. Lord knows, we have plenty of real problems to clean up here.

The Bible writes very clearly about caring for the children and the aged; we chose, instead to cherry pick which quotations to further our own purposes. The Bible is there to read and believe in full measure.

Regarding vouchers: nobody is surprised that fine private schools do a better job than the public; also true, is that public schools with a good tax base do a much better job. The writing is on the wall.

    22. Bruce, Denver says:

What a bunch of hypocrites on this website. The author claims the Iowa Supreme Court was "wrong on the facts" when it found no credible evidence that children need a mother and father to be raised in a healthy adults, as if the author read the court's record. As support for this critisism, the author cites a study that finds "Children whose parents marry and stay married have been found to have better health and are less likely to be depressed, are less likely to repeat a grade in school, and have fewer developmental problems than other children." If the original poster were intellectually honest, he or she would realize that the cited study actually SUPPORTS the Supreme Court's decision, which also concluded that MARRIED coupled serve the optimal environment for raising children. Since gays & lesbians will continue to raise children in Iowa regardless whether they can legally marry, then those CHILDREN are better served if their parents are in loving, stable, legally-protected marriages. The court was thinking of the CHILDREN, not your bigotted notions that by denying gays and lesbian families the same legal rights you enjoy, that such discrimination somehow helps the children. No, it is your hateful attitudes that is harmful to the children, not the fact that such families can now marry. Please, think of the CHILDREN and READ the Iowa decision before spreading more lies.

    23. P.D.S. says:

And some wonder why there is so much violence? It isn't the guns killing it is the twisted minds behind the guns. The twisted minds get that way because of judges decisions like this.

    24. Loretta, Idaho says:

Very troubling what Iowa has done regarding marriage. What's really troubling though is that there seems to be absolutely nothing anyone can do to stop this madness which is sure to destroy this nation. The right-minded people are writing and writing and writing, talking and talking and talking. And none of this writing and talking has any affect. The family, Christianity, conservatives (financial and otherwise) are powerless. Elections do nothing to change anything because both parties are insane with power and money which has lead to unfathomable corruption. They bail out to the rich and hand out to the lazy. The entire government needs to be over-thrown–top to bottom by reformers who will be committed to the Constitution which none of our elected officials are–NONE. We are going the way of every other powerful empire in history. Every one became corrupt from within–making them vulnerable and eventually obsolete through a outside power that popped the ballon veneer. As I see it–there is no hope for this country outside of a full-blown revolution in the streets. That is not a pessimistic approach. It is a realistic one. Outside of a revolution that completely overthrows this corrupt government we now have–it is only a matter of time before we are under the rule of a dictator (a very, very short time). I am grateful I will probably be dead by then–but I am so, so sad for what my children and grandchildren will suffer. In 62 years I have never made a public statement in writing or otherwise regarding the demise of this once great country. Now it is axiomatic. Current events are the reality. The power-brokers know exactly where they are going. The clear-thinking are crying out. And the majority (the real power-base in this country) have stuck their heads in the sand–unwilling to think for themselves, they 'follow' the empty words of so-called eloquent orators.

You do not need to bow to kings and you do not need to apologize to the world for the United States.

And what would you apologize for? Would you apologize for the fact that literally every nation that is free in the world today is free because of the spilled blood of young American men and women? Would you apologize for the fact that we have saved Europe from tyrannical rule, not once but twice in the past 100 years? Would you apologize because we are the most generous nation in the world and do more to stave off hunger and disease in foreign countries than all of Europe combined? 36. RussBrown, Sarasota, says:

There is so much misunderstood about success of children in private school versus that of public school. I taught in a private school for thirteen years and served as the department chairman for mathematics.First of all, private schools have the privilege of selecting the students they will accept into their school. Secondly, most private schools want to be thought of as independent schools. Therefore, they are not being controlled by the State, which means, the State cannot dictate the curriculum.

That is why private(independent schools) would be foolish to accept vouchers which would put them in a position to allow the

State to control their operation. Private schools do not have better teachers,.If anything, public school have better teachers. However, private schools have a better learning environment because they do not have to put up with unruly students. Politicians are the biggest problem to public school education because they will not face up to the fact that public schools have such a diversity of abilities of the children with such diverse family backgrounds. Visit schools in which there are students of which English is a secondary language. Private schools do not have to contend with this.

I also taught in public school for 28 years

    38. Mike Sheahen, Hickor says:

In nature there is no waste and no defying nature without consequences, and yet man wastes by defying nature, suffers the consequences, and denies them as such.

Examples: Piranhas have incisors for eating meat; cattle have molars for eating vegetation; the tangible and intangible features of both our nearest genetic relatives, chimpanzees, and us humans are purposely and specifically designed and meant for heterosexual purposes such as reproducing and raising our own offspring, and, as even nature shows, the law of nature is that anyone who defies nature will somehow suffer the consequences of doing so, whether any of us humans acknowledge or deny them as such or not.

Alas, indeed it is in this case some humans, such as those on the Left who imagine themselves so “smart” that they outsmart ourselves in their defiance of nature, denial of their doing so, the consequences of that, and even their exacerbating of the situation through their perpetrating and propagating, through Leftist activist judges when they can’t do so through citizen initiatives and/or legislation, etc, that any or all of us condone such defiance of nature, and even pay, in the form of our freedoms, resources, and more, for the consequences of their doing so.

Indeed the Left does, such as in this case, insist that "same sex" defiance of nature is "perfectly natural", deny any consequences of any kind as such, and not only insist as if we all should condone and pay, but they will evidently also dismiss anything to the contrary as a mere so-called "stereotype".

However, our Founding Fathers, such as Thomas Jefferson said: “A free people claim their rights as derived from the laws of nature, and not as the gift of their chief magistrate”, yet the Left calls us the "dangerous" ones with the "unnatural" idea and seeking to impose it, when even the facts and laws of nature show they are the ones with the unnatural idea and determination to impose it by any means, including through Leftist activist judges who will act as if to overrule both the facts and laws of nature and the will of the people, for any excuse including the naturally unfounded and bankrupt excuse of labeling anything to the contrary as a mere so-called "stereotype".

Of course, by doing so, those on the Left and their activist judges are propagating and promoting the patently Leftist government elitist and statist “ends justifies the means” agenda, even when it means making subversive hypocrites of themselves by defying nature and overruling the people through any means available to them. This includes their machinations to get judges to act as if they “overrule” through any opinion which is agreeable to such an agenda, all of which ought to be familiar to us from history to this day since other Socialist government elitist and statist regimes and oligarchies, such as those of Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, their “courts”, and others, all acted and act only too similarly, which goes to show how “Those who don’t know their history are doomed to repeat it”, and so again that is indeed what we’re up against.

These off-the-wall pronouncements that have no basis in Constitutional law seem to be part of a conspiricy to destroy the meaning of the Constitution and thus take away the rights guaranteed in that document. This idiocy seems to be generated in law schools and lawyer associations. We must insist these "trusted" officials obey the law and to uphold and defend the Constitution instead of mocking its real meaning.

    41. J.C. Hughes, Texas says:

Tony from the "Down Under'. Again, it's a matter of perspective. America is a nation of laws, some good and others not so good. We also have a constitution which forms the foundation of our legislative and judicial powers. The purpose of this divide is to allow peoples' representative voice to be heard on matters such as what constitutes marriage. In addition, the U.S. Bill of (individual) rights guarantees basic inherited liberties. Each state has similar game rules. When activist judges overstep their boundaries by making and changing laws, we have a large problem. Hope this helps.

    42. Gary Clark Morro Ba says:

All of the "Creation" based religions whether,

Judaism, Orthodox Judaism, Christianity, Catholicism, Islam or Hindu cite 2 principals in arguement of Homosexeuality; Devine Law, Natural Law, The arguement that "I was born that way" doesn't work in the creationalism theory simply because God (or Alah) would not have created homosexuals and then turned around and then condemmed them. Homosexuality is a choice.

Moving away from Creationalism, for example, studies suggest some people are born with a hereditary disposition to alcoholism, but no one would argue someone ought to fulfill these inborn urges by becoming an alcoholic. Alcoholism is not an acceptable "lifestyle" any more than homosexuality is. Some would claim that 10% of the population is homosexual so, it is in the reasonable normal mix of social behavior. (actually it's about 1.5%). However be given a nature of free choice and the influence of social environment we are also expected in that free conscience choice to consider "Right and Wrong"

God knows the days that we are to be born, to live, and to die. What we do with the "in between"

and where we spend eternity, well???

    43. Jim@Redding,CA says:

The last time in history that same-sex

      relationships were recognized as being

"OK" was in the time of Noah… This stuff

is just one of MANY SIGNS letting those of

us who know and love Him that it won't be

long before God pours out his wrath upon

the USA and the world at large.

Our best and ONLY hope is to trust in Him,

and to be about His business by spreading

the Gospel to as many as we can. When we

plant the seeds, God alone will provide

the increase!! (AND – He will reward us

in heaven for doing His will for us!) It

can't get any better than that!!!
