Today Interior Secretary Ken Salazar will host a regional public meeting in Atlantic City to gather information and public comment on whether the Outer Continental Shelf should be freed for energy development. Heritage analyst Ben Lieberman explains the process:

I believe we should use whatever energy resources we can find within the US including those off-shore. Oil is the current primary resource. Dependence on foreign oil leaves us vulnerable to blackmail by those that wish to harm us. Those that want alternative energy are right to seek it but must recognize it will take a significant transition period during which increased oil discovery will be necessary. If we had continued to pursue nuclear energy at the brate we did in the 70's we'd be energy independent now a would have saved sending trillions of dollars to countries that don't like us. AND we'd have a much smaller carbon footprint. Why is this so hard to understand?
