  • Morning Bell: An Audaciously Bad Missile Deal

Describing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s message in a private meeting with the foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates Monday, a U.S. official told the Washington Post: “She said we are under no illusions about Iran and our eyes are wide open.” Well someone in the Obama Administration is under a huge illusion, because the Moscow newspaper Kommersant also reported yesterday that President Barack Obama sent a secret letter to Russian President Dmitri Medvedev weeks ago suggesting that he would halt development of the United States’ missile defense program in Eastern Europe if Russia helped resolve the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran has strongly resisted international efforts to pressure it to abide by its legal commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and halt its suspect nuclear activities. Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, defiantly proclaimed last year that “Iran has obtained the technology to produce nuclear fuel, and Iran’s move is like a train…which has no brake and no reverse gear.” But we must be careful not to personalize the problem. Iran’s nuclear program began under President Rafsanjani and flourished under President Khatami. Both were considered “moderates,” extolled by some observers as leaders with whom the West could do business, but both also practiced diplomacy by taqiyyah, which is a religiously sanctioned form of dissimulation or duplicity.

Meanwhile, Russia has long been an enabler of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Not only have they provided Iran with uranium, supposedly for peaceful purposes, but they have even supplied Iran with anti-aircraft missiles, presumably to be used to stop Israeli forces from attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities.

With these facts in mind, the Obama Administration quid pro quo raises some troubling issues:

    • First, what the U.S. wants for not deploying systems to protect us is Russian diplomacy that ensures the Iranian ballistic missile and nuclear programs are terminated. That could take years and then it could only be verified with inspectors on the ground in Iran–an unthinkable concession. In the interim, Iran could easily build and test and we would have no defense. Indeed, not building defenses now may encourage the Iranians to speed-up their program. That’s a bad deal.
    • Second, Russia’s complaints about missile defense are rooted in their belief that they should be able to control and threaten the countries on their borders. Agreeing to negotiate on missile defense concedes that point–that is a bad idea.
    • Finally, if hitting the “reset” button on US-Russian relations mean the United States has to make itself intentionally vulnerable to a potential Iranian threat–that’s a really bad deal.

If Obama truly made a secret deal with Dmitri (Why the heck is this sounding like Dr. Strangelove?), it cements his stupefied inability as the new Commander-in-Chief. Obama's priorities are totally backwards. He needs to be impeached before he can cause any more damage to ,not only the economy, but a president's main primary duty, national defense.

We all knew it was going to be bad under this left wing guy Obama, just how bad is the stuff of which night mares are made. Hollywood and the left are in ennui haven, the rest of us will pay.

    4. Richard Cancemi,Arli says:

We're all sitting-by, watching Rome burn. Obama is a menace to Americanism. Being elected by an ignorant, naive, meager majority, does not give him the right to do what he's doing. He is imposing HIS will, not the Constitution, on ALL of the American people. He is another Attila, imposing the barbarity of Socialism on this Country.

America needs to succeed; Obama needs to fail. His equally anti-American cronies in Congress and the Courts need to be kicked out, too.

There is not one Socialist country that has done any real GOOD for its citizens. His voting-supporters are blind to this. An ignorant Democracy is dangerous!

President Obama continues to make poor decisions bankrupting this country, financially enslaving our children and weakening our national security. The only possible good I can see coming out of this Administration is that it may serve as a wake up call to Americans that "participatory democracy" means get involved in politics to save our way of life. I didn't realize how fast President Reagan's work could be undone. I lived in China for a while and I am finding it more difficult lately to differentiate between our two states.

    7. Olivia Jenney, McLea says:

Rush Limbaugh – a chain we need to loosen!

Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer and his material is Republican politics. I am outraged by his blast that the president's policies fail. For God's sake, we're in a monstrous downturn. If Rush, in his common language, had emphasized the failure of the president's policies and had come up with equally glib alternatives, I could have agreed with him. But to devise a message that our president, who will be with us for four long years, has failed is invidious. Let's not kid ourselves. Mr. Obama has not failed, he has succeeded in promulgating and instituting his socialist agenda.

In my view, Rush provides damaging fodder for liberals and helps increase the divide between Conservatives and Republicans when we need every vote we can muster and every voice to support our policies: lower taxes, less spending, less government and local control. It's a matter of degree that reflects the divide between conservative and moderate Republicans, not gleeful and thoughtless persiflage about failure.

As the stock market tanks, revealing a huge loss of confidence in the president's policies, we need to articulate, not entertain.

Obama's ignorance is astonishing. If you think his domestic policies are bad for our economy.Wait until we see the results of his foreign policy. Giving 900 million dollars to the Palestinians (Hamas) to rebuild Gaza is simply stupid. If we can't ensure food, blankets and medical supplies does'nt get into the hands of the terroists, who do you think is going to get there grubby little hands on all that money. The Palestinians' government is controlled by Hamas. If Hillary gives them any money , she is supporting terrorism with our money. It used to be against the law to support terrorism. I guess there is a lot of things that are'nt against the law anymore. Things like paying taxes, supporting terrorism(since we dropped all the charges against eveyone held at Guantanimo), and receiving illegal campaign contributions, then paying them back(ACORN). Russia is not going to do us any favors. They support Iran. Where do you think they receive they're missle and nuclear technology from? Oh forgive me, China, North Korea and an occasional Pakistan fellow. A weak AMERICA is not what we want. Iran is already holding one American lady hostage. I have not heard a word about it from Hillary or our wonderful new president. They must think a teacher from the USA deserves to be held for no reason. Bowing down before the people that hate us just makes it easier for them to cut our heads off. We the people must let our voices be heard. I know the House and Senate guit answering the phones and e-mails but we can't let that stop us. Rush was right, we are not the minority. Conservative values , priciples and hard work is what made this country the best place the world has ever seen. Let's keep it that way!

The so called "socialism" started with the Bush bailout. Obama has a huge pile of problems thanks to the awful so called leadership of the right. Top on the list is not Russia or even Iran's Atomic technologies but Pushtun war this should Major cause pause to those that study history and is most likely to big a problem to pin all on Bush. Right now Pakistan is falling and with that Asia is slipping in to chaos. This is a very dangerous time and the U.S cannot afford to be distracted by you "out of touch" types. Please get you head in the game the nation needs you.

    10. bill s, dallas says:

Interesting dialogue, all. But how much better if the relevant sovereign congresswo/men we apprised of their duty to the future rather than to 'votes.' Copy your gripe to them. Tell each whose had 8 or more years in office that they're sorely out of touch with their electorate. Go home and allow newer blood in to right their wrong–we can only hope.

The old parable of the frog being offered safe passage across a river by a snake is to be heeded. With a fire at his back the frog takes the grinning snake at his word and begins the crossing atop the head of the snake. Halfway across the river, the snake leans back and takes in a mouthful of frog. Before being engorged by the snake, the frog pleads: But you said you would help me?

You knew I was a snake when you asked for my help.

    11. d. j. VENNER---SOQUE says:

President Obama is, in my opinion, out of CONTROL.

He may be controlled by Those New World Folks or Others who WANT TO DESTROY AMERICA, AND WHO MAY HAVE HELPED HIM IN ASSUMING A SOCIALISTIC MIND SET– IN ORDER TO ENSLAVE AMERICA THRU VERY HIGH TAXES (from his so called "Stimuls Bill" and by giving BILLIONS TO COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS GROUPS led by ACORN, WHO WILL CONTINUE TO STUFF THE BALLOT BOXES FOR THE DEMOCRATS, IN FUTURE ELECTIONS—

      MY OPINION. DJV

    12. David, TN says:

I had a wait and see attitude about this president when he first got sworn in. I did not have long to wait and see. I would say that he is an over achiever. He has managed to spend more money in six weeks than Bush spent in eight years. The left can say what they want to try to defend him but he is his own worst enemy. He has broken all of the promisses that he made when he was running for office. One of the only persons that he has managed to get placed in an office that is not a tax cheat was a lobbyist. We now have nationalized health care with no debate thanks to a 1100 page "stimulus" bill that was passed with out any review. This is more than statism it is fascism and is the worst case of that the world has seen since the 1930's.

    13. Ron, Derry nh says:

He is true to his word then, Obama after all, in his speeches did declare he would roll back our budget on defense, missile technology and in general, de-fang the American arsenal. The only way to do that is to give away our responsibilities to another host and with no moral concerns or attachment to the results.

If this deal is true, then he is appearing to be the great appeaser while making steps toward surrendering our obligations to defend our allies, perhaps to seem more Chamberlainesque. In giving away our responsibilities he will insure he needs to make no commitments later, forced by previous alliances. He is cutting America's traditional loyalties in Europe in favor of what I wonder??

Maybe trading east Europe for a temporary gain in our obligations and responsibilities in the mid east? Seems he is into human trading at a much larger scale than our ancestors were.

If it is true that he is working behind the back of his own foreign ministers then he is far more megalomaniacal then first thought. It seems his character is what we all perceived when during his campaign he was willing to step on and dump any life long loyalties to gain supreme power.

Nice to have a KING instead of the usual lack luster politician don't you think? The winds of change are so unpredictable, especially when nobody asked or cared what the change was toward.

    14. Kent, Virginia says:

What is Barry Soetoro's (aka Barack Obama) REAL desire for America? To so cripple us financially and create crisis after crisis that we slip into third world status and become an easy mark for our enemies? Why in this very dangerous world would he ever propose not continuing to develop a missile defense system? The belief that we could develop such a system is what helped the Soviets bankrupt their Marxist-Leninist system and tear down the Berlin Wall. Is anyone paying any attention to the way the market is responding to this President and his policies? Does anyone else think either this man is either inept or subversive?

    15. Frank W., New Mexico says:

Everyday since Obama has been in office I wake up to some crazy new plan Obama has. Where was the transperancy on having a secret letter that effects our national security? I don't think we will make it another 202 weeks with this guy in the White House. His buddy Top-Rahm-en is nothing but a criminal.

    16. Frank W., New Mexico says:

      402 weeks

    17. Augustine 25 says:

I've predicted that Obama's weakness and inexperience would lead to foreign policy setbacks. This missile defense surrender is just frightening to me. The poor Polish people have suffered more than enough over the years. They deserve protection from Russia.

    18. Sliver Wisconsin says:

Hey Olivia those moderate RINOS you are talking about are nothing but Dems in drag. We need to rid ourselves of those blue blood country club Republicans like McCain and his buddies. You can call us Conservatives radical but by being moderate you are only capitulating to the left. The reason we are in trouble now is because of those RINOS that want to be part of the crowd and be liked by the Dems. By attempting to be liked by everybody you only lose respect from the same people you are trying to impress. We need to be on the offensive not on the defense.

    19. Tom, Houston says:

Every day that goes by continues to prove that America has elected an idiot as president. We are getting change – FOR THE WORSE! Google Dr. Vaknin's analysis of Obama's problem – pathological narcissism.

    20. Tom, Houston says:

You may change the "idiot" reference to "mentally challenged" if you want to be PC.

    21. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

Well this deal with Russia is no suprise. Obama said in his pre-election speeches he felt all that was needed to solve the peoblems was to sit down and talk. If people had any sence they would have known this would not work when dealing with Iran. He now wants to give up this COUNTRY and all that was given to make this COUNTRY great.

He has not the guts nor the sence to stand up for the AMERICAN people, but wants to turn this country into a dictatorship with him as the RULER.

If one remembers his staff has already stated before 1-20-09 that HE would began HIS RULE on 1-20-09. Guess we have now seen how his RULE will be done. The dems and HIM are going to send us down the tube with the TRASH.

    22. John Rosina, Bordent says:

If Rush Limbaugh were sworn to uphold and protect the constitution and held responsible, in the public eye, for defending this nation against all enemies Foreign and Domestic, I think you'd find less infotainment in his dialogue. If not – he'd probably have to put himself under White House arrest. Where is Joseph McCarthy now that entertainners are overtly calling for our Nation to fail.

This is no time for intramural sports. We could use some class and the Varsity Players about now.

    23. Judith, Montana says:

What has happened to all the retired people in America, are we invisable? I hear nothing from the adminstration in their regard. We have worked a lifetime, saved and invested our money along with raising, educating a family and volunteering to help those in need. We are down 75% in income and still dropping, not of an age to enter the workplace, and facing the prospect of no benefits either medical or tax. It appears we have to join the ranks of the indigent to receive what we have already worked and paid for.

    24. Bob R Geologist, Tuc says:

Going Democratic has always been symbolic to me as going to "Hell in a Basket." Nothing has changed today.

    25. Thor H. Asgardson says:

The Iranian question is a moot point. Russia is the axis on which all Iranian questions spin, as they are Iran's chief supplier of nuclear technology.

Obama has chosen wisely in this one case, by offering an olive branch to the Russians, whom we have alienated.

Any real conservative will agree that we need to dissolve NATO, bring all of our troops home from Europe and Korea, and quit provoking the Russians by invading their sphere of influence and basing ourselves in their back yard.

We need to get out of Russia's face, and start showing the proper respect to a major player on the world stage.

Russia will reciprocate by supporting the Monroe Doctrine.

The ideas of Patrick J. Buchanan should be considered when estimating the strategic implications of this matter.

American security rests on our friendship with the Russian Federation.

    26. John Rosina, Bordent says:

PS – I agree with Heritage on thie Missle issue. We should not be so quick to accomodate Russia and who can ever trust Iran?

    27. sambo cola sc says:

The letter was no secret. Most of you on this site appear to,not

have the slightest idea of what you are talking about.you're spewing hatred, and spreading untruthful rumors, and to make it even worse, one clown even brings ACORN into the picture, and by using caps i guess that is suppose to make sure that you understand this is bad, another of you is a seer,he even made a prediction as to what Obama would do about foreign policy. Another wants to throw in a frog parable, and by some of your degrading comments it appears some of you didn't graduate from elementary school, and apparently most of you don't realize the author has changed some of the wording around, to villianize

      this secret letter

    28. Dorothy Morgan, Okla says:

Too bad we haven't had the time or money to take care of all these problems; Iran is an especially evil well-financed enemy that we know has been working on the nuclear situation for many years. And we've been right across their border for how many years now? Russia has made this possible for Iran till now. It's going to take something extremely thoughtful to gain an edge here. Once we get our way with Russia, whose to say the Missile Shield program won't arise again? Or something even better.

At this point in our history, we have to have help from other nations, in one form or another.

We don't mind asking China for money; why not ask Russia for help with Iran????????? One thing for sure, "you don't ask, you don't get." The male ego has started many wars….some that neither side wanted or needed. Russia is in tough shape right now, too; the timing might be perfect.

    29. Linda , Keansburg, N says:

To all members of the Heritage Foundation,

I read a disturbing artical in my boyfriends November VFW magazine about voting. We are suppose to be the world's greatest democracy, but our voting patterns doesn't reflect this. There has been 27 elections since 1945 on average only 48.3% cast a vote in our voting base. This is a disgrace. We are tied at 139th in the world with Mexico. We need to get out starting this year in Nov. Local elections are just as important as national elections are.

      Tom, Houston writes:

You may change the “idiot” reference to “mentally challenged” if you want to be PC….>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

There is no need to be PC here but I would have given the description a little flair. What comes to mind is sophomoric nincompoop or maybe an idiot savant but that term does imply some type of gift or skill. One thing for sure is he’s neither economic genius nor are his “advisors”.

I’ve come to the decision that we need to stop electing millionaires to seats that shape the course of our Country. They are so obsessed with money and acquiring it for themselves. For me I am sick to death of wealthy millionaires who usually sit in the White House so often as well in the Capitol building. They have lived a fairly wonderful life with there afternoon tea, massage at the spa and a weekend at the club with Bitsy and Biff. They have a twisted idea because they acquired wealth over the course of time that gives them some type of familiarity with money. But someone born with a silver or gold spoon in their mouth doesn’t seem to understand the intricacies of economy. They’ve never lived paycheck to paycheck so they can’t possibly no how the rest of us live. Most never held a real job but we elect these people to represent our interest, when they are only representing their own.

What do wealthy people do when they or someone close to them gets in trouble? They take out their wallets or checkbooks and ask how much. That’s their answer for everything is how much will it cost me? And these are the same people who sit in the White House and/or Congress and end up holding the purse stings of America. I’m not talking about one party over the other because there are plenty of people to blame across the board. I don’t think George Bush fully understood the economy because he is one of those silver spoon children. But I don’t believe for a second that he was out to destroy our Country.

Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barack Obama (their nicknames are the three little pigs because of all that pork) I do believe that these three stooges are out to destroy are way of life by forcing constraints on us to rely heavily on our Government. In 2006 our stock market was thriving, the Dow was at its highest level somewhere in the 14,000 mark. Enter the democrats who took control in both houses and the economy has dropped ever since. So if you liberals complain “its Bushes fault” but in 2007 Bush became a lame duck President; granted he signed some bills he shouldn’t have but the control was no longer in his hands . Do you know or understand this concept? Because it’s about to be repeated in 2010. I don’t know if our Country will survive by then, I only hope it can and will. For those of you who refuse to see the facts and want to perpetuate this myth, continue your Bush bashing and finger pointing, because retribution is coming to weed out the subterfuge of the liberals which will be felt deeply in 2010.

Then, try getting the public to vote for another historic black President again any time soon. He’s left a very bitter taste in our mouths. But Good Luck in 2010 but I guess you’ll have to learn about disappointment once again.

Last time such a deal was attempted was by Neville Chamberlain who negotiated "peace in our time" deal with Hitler.

Russia will get what it wants from US-to get rid of the US presence in Poland and other East European countries. They will be in a position to exert their will over them especially in the current economic times. Georgia is a demonstrator project.

Under the cover of cooperation, Russia will sell more armaments and nuclear materials to Iran. Recall, Clinton struck a deal with North Korea only to find out that US fell for the deception.

US under Obama is a toothless and claw less tiger! Iran will become a nuclear power and may explode a device in Israel, just as it promised. Obama will send bandages to help the wounded. Iranian agents may try to explode a device in the US. Russia will simply look the other way.

    43. Tim/Ohio says:

Obama seems to think he has a mandate to completely dismantle the U.S. government. He obviously has no clue about foriegn policy issues. The fact that he wants Russia to keep Iran's nuclear ambitions in check is a joke. Russia has helped Iran for years with nuclear technology. By the way, lets give Hamas $900 million to rebuild Plestine. Hamas sends rockets into Israel day after day for months on end, Israel retaliates by going into Palestine and taking away the capability to fire those rockets. How in the world can Obama $ Clinton justify $900,000,000.00 of our money to fix what Hamas caused on it's own. Lets make friends with terrorists who have one objective, to kill Americans. Wake up America! Your nation is being dismantled from within by your own President.
