Eric Holder, the new Attorney General has the opportunity this week to show whether he really intends to keep his promise of supposedly making sure there are no “politics” in the actions and decisions made by the Department of Justice. As Steve Hayward reports over at National Review, the Washington Post had a “frothy” story about Michael Steele on Saturday with completely unproven allegations of campaign finance violations by Steele’s failed Senate campaign, allegations made by a convicted swindler who prosecutors say stole almost $40 million. The Washington Post received …
Dr. Steven West, president of the Florida Medical Association, notes that the economic stimulus bill contains a down payment on President Barack Obama’s plans for socialized medicine: As Congress rushes its economic stimulus plan to the desk of President Obama, its grand vision of health reform has been secretly buried inside: rationing patient care and dispensing cookbook medicine. That vision involves using large government bureaucracy and computer technology to tell patients what kind of care they can receive from their doctors. The congressional rationing plan will make doctors supplicants to …
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford made some very important, insightful points on Sunday. He said them very concisely, as politicians know how to do. They are just what we’ve been saying here for so many weeks and months, and are important points that every American must remember: “A problem that was created by building up of too much debt will not be solved with yet more debt.” “We’re moving precipitously close to what I would call a savior-based economy…what you see in Russia or Venezuela or Zimbabwe or places like …
Newt Gingrich was on ABC’s This Week yesterday, and he nailed exactly why the Obama Trillion Dollar Debt Plan is destined to fail: Our unofficial rush transcript: What you actually have is not change you can believe in. What you have is the fourth act of the Bush-Obama spend more plan. [Vice President Joe] Biden voted for all three of the first spending plans. The stimulus which failed in the spring. The housing bailout which failed in the summer. The Wall Street bailout which failed in the fall. Now we’re …
This past Saturday, Vice President Joe Biden gave a troubling speech at the 45th Munich Security Conference. Heritage Director for Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom calls the speech “one of the weakest projections of U.S. leadership on foreign soil in recent memory. The message was confused, apologetic, over-conciliatory, and remarkably lacking in substance and detail.” Gardiner details: Iran In essence, Biden offered a quid pro quo deal with Iran–the kind the European Union has offered for several years with absolutely nothing to show for it except spectacular failure. … There …
Defending President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan on ABC’s This Week, National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers told George Stephanopoulos: “We need an approach that’s very different than the approach that we had that brought us to this point.” Summers is right; we do need a drastically new approach to fix our ailing economy. Problem is, the only thing new about Obama’s Trillion Dollar Debt Plan is the size with which it attempts to repeat the last Administration’s policy mistakes. Later on the show, New Gingrich explained: What you actually …
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a study on Wednesday, that estimates the impact of the Trillion Dollar Spending Plan being debated on the floor of the Senate this evening. They said “In the longer run, the legislation would result in a slight decrease in gross domestic product (GDP) compared with CBO’s baseline economic forecast.” That’s right, as a result of the current plan, the GDP of the United States would actually decrease according to the CBO. They go on to say that in the long run it will lower …
In a study released this morning, Heritage senior fellow Robert Rector pegged the honest cost of the House economic stimulus plan at $1.34 trillion, not the $816 billion that has been reported. Rector reasoned: The recently passed U.S. House of Representatives stimulus bill contains $816 billion in new spending and tax cuts. Of this sum, $264 billion (32 percent) is new means-tested welfare spending. … But this welfare spending is only the tip of the iceberg. The bill sets in motion another $523 billion in new welfare spending that is …
It’s no surprise the stimulus bill is loaded with green energy initiatives. Ideally, the bill can kill two birds with one stone by creating green jobs; it can solve our environmental and recessionary concerns in one fell swoop. But what have we learned so far? 1.) A green jobs initiative may actually hurt the economy by slowing growth and increasing unemployment. It’s a net job killer – see California. 2.) Green jobs don’t necessarily mean good jobs. A recently released report shows that many green jobs do not pay well. …
