  • Some Needed Climate Perspective

Here is the world temperature diagram from the Hadley Center that some think projects a catastrophic warming (this projection was easier to believe before the cooling of the last several years). The trough-to-peak temperature change from 1910 to 2005 is about .9 degrees C.

This is a diagram from our own National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. The top graph is temperature for the last 900,000 years (as best they can tell). Note that time advances from right to left. The trough-to-peak temperature changes are about 10 degrees C.

The bottom graph is the corresponding estimates of the sea level for the past 140,000 years.

The scary graph from Hadley seems kind of puny in scope when viewed in comparison to the two from NOAA with the much longer time frames and the much larger variations in climate. In the NOAA graphs, the current warming looks a lot like the previous warming episodes when there were no SUVs or coal-fired power plants.

Here’s something else to put in perspective—mass extinction. It seems that most of the species on the earth have survived severe changes in global temperature and sea-level.

A study on speciation looked at hundreds of species of birds and mammals. Here’s the news:

For example, while the closely related Baltimore oriole and black-backed oriole from North America split about 200,000 years ago, the white-edged oriole and spot-breasted oriole from Central and South America split about 4.3 million years ago. The scientists looked at 191 pairs of bird species and 118 pairs of mammal species.

They found that near the equator, sister species evolved into separate groups about 3.4 million years ago on average. By comparison, those in temperate regions split apart roughly 1.7 million years ago.

So, the newer species have been around for hundreds of thousands of years and the average-to-older ones for millions of years. Climate has changed a lot over the last 200,000 years—to say nothing of the past 2 million years.

If species have survived repeated changes in global temperature on the order of 10 degrees; and changes in habitat brought on by sea-level ups and downs of 300 to 400 feet, why will a two-degree change global temperature or a two-foot change in sea level be their undoing?

This all proves that Earth and Mother Nature are in control, not mankind! We need to be intelligent and careful about how we dispose of things and how we acquire natural resources, but to think that we have any real control is a very bold statement when you consider that Man is to Earth what an amoeba is to Man.

thanks for the information. i'm glad someone has taken time to explain a huge subject on a graph in simple terms.

In the very top graph, why do you choose the range of 1910 through 2005 to make your point, when the graph appears to be from 1850 to 2008?

For the time period of 1850 to 2008, is not the temperature change only 0.7 degrees over those 158 years?

    4. David Kreutzer, Ph.D. David Kreutzer says:

I used the 1910 to 2005 range to make the strongest case for the doomsday predictions. It is still less than a tenth of the peak-to-trough when the time scale is tens of thousands of years.

The recent temperature variation is just one of the little (almost imperceptible) squiggles laid over the bigger cycles.

I didn't mean to imply that I think the 1910 to 2005 is the most representative period.

This whole thing is not about the environment. It is about pushing an agenda for green companies and our own government agencies. It is a very sorry state when being elected is the mission of our representatives and not supporting the people. Yes, we can do things to help our plant but with in reason. We the people need to speak up or lose our freedom. Remember Hitler.

PS: This article is wonderful and you need to get this kind of article to our children and their parents to see both sides of the issue not just one. Put it in the top news papers to wake people up. I'm sure they need the money and would run it. This would kill the brain washing of the people in our nation by the media. We need to fight or lose our freedom. God Bless America.

Exaggerate while conditioning the minds of the people, to fear the people to that of which doesn't exist. Someone with authority has to step up and shut this scam down!

This is an excellent brief. Can you provide your NOAA original source document or hyperlink for the graphic shown? Thanks.

Anthropogenic global warming is a hoax use to gain socialistic power and destroy individual liberty. The Heartland Institute is convening top scientists and leaders that do not believe(based on their analysis of data)in the Anthropogenic global warming for a conference In New York on March 10. You will not hear about it in the communist media of the US. They had held a similar conference last year. You can find their articles and discussions at their web site, heartland/org.

There is little, if any, solid evidence that humans are the source of climate change. Those who look at this in a scientific manner confirm that the hypothesis is flawed. It is more likley that any change is due to factors other than man. It will be a sad day when emotionalism and greed cause an illegitament (aka carbon credits) industry to rule our manufacturing and energy producing companies.

The socialists are simply taking advantage of people with self imposed mental disabilities like liberalism. These people are easily controlled through fear and inferiority complexes cultivated by the socialists through the old media and govt. schools. Fortunately some of these people can overcome these fears. It usually happens when they begin to earn a living on their own. Sometimes they are forced to work because they are no longer satisfied with the meager and demeaning life stile afforded through welfare. Welfare is a wonderful device of the socialists. Welfare recipients have plenty of time to engage in the old media continually feeding their fears and maintaining a diminished self confidence through endless portrayals of victim hood and maintaining a division among the classes. Chiefly when one begins to earn their own living they gain self confidence and their fears begin to diminish. They no longer have the influence of govt. schools or the time for the old media. Then they begin to realize how they have been betrayed throughout their lives by these parasites. Then comes the rage. What will they do with all this rage? We shall see as it unfolds in the coming weeks months and years.
