  • Morning Bell: Let the American People Recover

Rhetorically there was much to like in President Barack Obama’s speech to Congress last night. None better than this early statement:

The answers to our problems … exist in our laboratories and universities, in our fields and our factories, in the imaginations of our entrepreneurs and the pride of the hardest-working people on Earth. Those qualities that have made America the greatest force of progress and prosperity in human history we still possess in ample measure.

We couldn’t agree more. America has been “the greatest force of progress and prosperity in human history” and we can continue to do so … as long as our politicians allow us the freedom to do so. Unfortunately, for every perceived problem in our current crisis, the Obama Administration promotes a heavy handed government solution. The list of new and expanded government initiatives was nothing if not audacious, including: a new national health care plan within a year, thousands of mile of power lines and wind turbines, expanded mass transit, a massive new carbon tax, a reconstructed auto industry, more pay for teachers, increased pay for soldiers and Marines, ending the Iraq war, and a new national service program. He even promised a cure for cancer. He promised he could do all this while reducing our nation’s exploding budget deficit. Color us skeptical.

There is no doubt that our policies in Washington must change. But the last eight years have already seen an explosion in the size and power of our federal government. If more invasive government was the answer, then we would be doing great right now. We’re not. There is a better, realistic path:

Keep the “Stimulus” Temporary - The President should pledge to oppose any attempts to make permanent any stimulus provisions that are not fully offset by lower-priority spending cuts. This spending was sold to the American people as temporary, and that promise should be kept. Extending this spending would require permanently raising taxes by nearly $3,000 per household.

Resist False Promises of a Free Lunch - Some have suggested that Obama can expand Medicare drug subsidies for seniors as well as add millions of Americans to government health care rolls without increasing the health care budget. This is completely unrealistic.  Such government expansions are totally unaffordable in today’s economic and budgetary climate.

Address Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid - These three programs already comprise 40 percent of all spending and are growing 7 percent annually on autopilot as 77 million baby boomers begin retiring. There is no way to bring the federal budget under control—or even close to balance—until these programs are reformed. To bring honesty back to Washington, President Obama should incorporate the massive long-term unfunded obligations of these programs into his budget and require Congress to focus on the long-term fiscal implications of their policies.

Support Spending Caps - In each of the past two years, Congress has passed budgets expanding discretionary spending by 8 percent. On top of that, they enacted $333 billion in “emergency” spending in 2008 and passed a $1.1 trillion “stimulus” this year. Clearly, the budget process created to help lawmakers set priorities and make trade-offs has collapsed. Enforceable spending caps can provide the structural rules necessary to make the difficult but necessary budget choices.

Avoid Harmful Tax Hikes - Higher tax rates discourage work, investment, saving, and entrepreneurial activity. Though Obama may propose that he will not raise taxes until 2011, the fact is the threat of these higher taxes is already depressing economic activity in the middle of the recession. Businesses are already foregoing investments in equipment anticipating Obama’s inevitable tax hikes. If all of the tax cuts enacted during the Bush Administration expire, families would see a tax increase of $2,000 per year on average and an additional loss of $1,800 per year due to slower economic growth. The average job growth for each congressional district would be reduced by over 2,000 jobs.

The character traits Obama invoked last night – personal responsibility, hard work, sacrifice, entrepreneurial creativity, resiliency, decency, and fairness – are the key to our economic recovery, not massive new government intervention in the lives of Americans. Our government should be pursuing policies that free the American people to pursue their dreams, not suffocating the American people with new spending, taxes, and government mandates.

    Quick Hits:

    • According to Gallup, Just one-fourth of Americans think the government should continue lending money to Detroit automakers.
    • According to Rasmussen Reports, given the choice between federal bailouts for the auto companies, the finance industry and financially trouble homeowners or no bailouts for any of them, 54% say no bailouts period.
    • California’s carbon capping policies are turning out to be much more costly than their proponents advertised.
    • President Obama is expected to announce as early as Friday that he will remove all U.S. combat troops from Iraq by August 2010.
    • A French court overturned terrorist conspiracy convictions for five former inmates of the Guantanamo Bay Tuesday.

Kissinger said everything is in place for Obama to bring the new world order. Guess what? It's already here.

    2. ame, PA says:

Finally, with Jindal we have a leader on the national stage, not an empty styrofoam Greek column Obama poser.

Bobby Jindal is one of a very few truly brilliant people who have ideas that work and have proven to do so. He has more smarts in his socks than Obama has in his pretend sentimental idiotic "dreams."

Jindal is a man of principle, not politics; a man with an ethical and moral center, not "above my pay grade" – "I screwed up" – "I won" pureile whining; a leader, not a facilitator; a person of action, not staging; someone who believes in the power of America and Americans, not the power of government; a man of purpose, not empty promise.

Bobby Jindal has actually served the America he leads, not just taken from it for personal gain.

Jindal and other young Republicans such as Cantor and Ryan finally give me some real hope.

Obama couldn't lead a dog to a fire hydrant, but he can put dogs in a "study group" and teach them to bark.

Jindal is real, a leader who has proven himself through his actions, someone we can actually trust and someone who delivers, not the solipsistic pathetic frat brat elitist race baiting welfare Chicago thug wind blower we now must endure.

I didn't listen to Obambi's speech because he never says ANYTHING anyone can trust – NO SUBSTANCE, just dissembling equivocation. Obobo's a master of deceit, but I did listen to Jindal because he not only speaks with substance, he delivers it. Jidal is real, not an Obama cardboard cutout.

It doesn't matter what Obama says, he cannot be believed.

The HF, GOP, Rush, and that bunch offer

Obama continues to campaign for free market albeit socialistic causes, while his friend Bill Ayers continues to say he is not a terrorist. These guys both dine together, and lie together. The country is lost, but this is what the American people wanted [including many wall streeters], and this is what they will get. They Dow has lost 2,500 pts since Obama got elected, wealth is down and this is the savior that has the magic touch, can walk on water, and fix the planet. And his administration can no longer use the phrase “war on Terrorism" Do you really feel safe with his guy in charge?

    6. Danny Fla says:

Good Morning Morning Bell: My comment is the people are the goverment/ not backwards. Elected officials are servants of the one's who elected them. to do otherwise is treason. The American values are trust, and the very basic fairness that is the healing balm- of all people. Common sense is what the day calls for- basic values that build trust, and the economy that makes all men free.By The People, And For The People.

    7. J.C. Hughes, Texas says:

I've got a better solution. Do away with personal income taxes and go to a fair tax. Assign the federal government to their primary role of national security so as to provide a necessary safe environment for states and free markets to prosper. Would this work, of course it would. Is it realistc, not with today's beltway demagogs.

    8. TC South Carolina says:

I find it very ironic that our VP, Joe Bieden, is threating to punish, takeover and expose the states if they don't "spend" the bailout money as directed by the Federal Gov't. This is the same gov't that is addicted to taxpayer dollars like a drug addict is to drugs,. They spend and spend our tax dollars with little or no oversite and will waste those tax payer dollars again and again on pet – vote buying programs that do nothing to stimulate or help our economy.

Most politicians, and especially the democates, are masters at diverting attention from themselves (Frank & Dodd)and onto others who serve their purpose,i.e., the bankers, CEO's and other free market producrers. SOME of the former are certainly guilty of greed, but MOST are not. MOST of the politicians are guilty of greed, and a FEW are not… this is the big difference in "we the people" and the politicians.

Politics pays often and pays very well. Take VP Joe; he claims to be just an average guy who has chosen to serve the people of Delaware instead of working in the private sector. He lives in a multi-million dollar house and his son and brother run the Bieden Foundation, worth in excess of $20 million. Where does all the money come from? You can only make so many speeches in your life time. I'm ready for the "new tea party" and the 5 million man march on Washington.

    9. Bob in St. Louis, Mi says:

Gee, where do I begin to say that I just figured the amount of taxes I paid to the Fed, State and Local authorities! It's just over $40,000.00! And that doesn't include charitable giving and sales taxes on practically everything you buy and personal property taxes on vehicles, just to name a few! And I won't get a dime back either, so I'd say I'm one of the disenfranchised taxpayers that looks at what our congressional leaders are doing with my hard earned tax dollars and just get ill at the waste and the give-aways to those that don't deserve it. I believe in helping those that can't help themselves, but a trillion dollars is obscene to me! The fraud in the social security disability benefits program is one of my pet peeves that needs to be addressed immediately! It is so abused! I've been paying into SSN since 1965 and I'll bet I'll never see a dime of it because congress has borrowed agianst it too! I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore! We need to clean house up there in D.C. because our representatives don't safeguard our interests anymore, they only go up there to get rich off the backs of us hard working, law abiding citizens! They're a joke! Reid, Pelosi, Durbin, Dodd, Frank and Kerry are a disgrace to their office! Their a bunch of socialists and are going to ruin this great republic. Shame on them and the evil they do! As for Holder, I think he's the coward for not coming to St. Louis, to my house, and call me a coward to my face. We'd be putting the gloves on out in the middle of the street, for sure! Thanks, I enjoy your website, it's one of the last few bastions of good, honest dialogue I can find today…keep up the good work.

    10. Dwana Townsend says:

More promises he will not be able to deliver. Watch what happens over the next 30 days and see if he is living up to what he said in his speech last night.

I still believe we need to revolt and have my teabags ready. I plan to send them. Just tell me when.

    11. Tony Hollick, Bristo says:

Insead of the State owning the banks, why not simply distribute bank shares in equal potions to each American citizen?

85 million Americans already use Co-Operatives and Credi Unions, and they're not the ones in rouble, or the ones responsibile for the 'Bubbles' or for the bursting thereof.

Extending Invoice Factoring facilities to all producers and distributors of goods and services is far and away the best way of "kick-starting" real and lasting economic growth.

      Tony Hollick

    12. Paul Schwab, Centerv says:

WORDS, WORDS, WORDS, JUST WORDS. Remember Obama repeated this time and time again while running for President. His speech last evening – WORDS, WORDS, WORDS, JUST WORDS.

Let's see how much of this stimulus package is PORK, PORK, PORK and MORE PORK. Remember Nancy Pelosi was intrumental in the package of WORDS in 1100 pages. A good package could have been written on ONE PAGE AND NOT A LOT OF WORDS AND A LOT OF PORK. We need truth in Washington instead of B.S. The citizens of America are asked to take a cut in pay, sacrifice every which way, but SPEND SPEND SPEND so we can boost the economy, while our representatives in Washington just took AN INCREASE IN PAY and passed a bill that will SPEND SPEND SPEND AND MORE SPEND our grandchildren's inheritance. They fly around the Country at our expense in private jets;;;;(NANCY PELOSI). They have part time jobs and get paid more than the average American Citizen FOR FULL TIME WORK. They ARE SUPPOSED TO work for us not the other way around.

Let the American people wise up and DEMAND THAT WE HAVE TERM LIMITS, NO SPECIAL RETIREMENT PLAN AND NO SPECIAL HEALTH PLAN. Wake up America. Demand Term limits in Washington.

    13. William Cole says:

Remember Gramm-Rudmann? The big spenders of that day just laughed it off and continued to buy votes with "OFF-BUDGET" and "EMERGENCY" spending schemes. Your suggestion to implement "ENFORCEABLE SPENDING CAPS" may prove to be the challenge of this century. That is if we survive as a nation until the year 2100.

    14. W . Childress Corpus says:

What the polls indicate really matter to the liberals? since that are the majority they can do what ever they want and no one rep's nor us can stop them. Tax wise, look at daschel, even he was against paying taxes. Do we have any alternatives as tax payers to have our voices heard? I hope that the liberals will not turn this nation into a one party system though they are trying very hard to so and I also hope that though they are control that they will not amend the 22 amendment so that OB can continue to run indefinitely.

thanks for taking the time to read my coommends.

    15. W . Childress Corpus says:

      please excuse my typing

    16. Kent, Virginia says:

Obama is sliding a bit in the polls, so he decides to try to sound like Ronald Reagan to bring his numbers up. The man is impressive when he's got a prepared speech to read, but folks in Bristol VA know how inept he is when the teleprompter goes down. He is a populist speaker in the FDR 'Progressive' mold. Obama may try to sound like Reagan, but he will govern more like Wilson and FDR, expanding government powers and influence and spending while steamrollering all opposition. Why is the man paying a phalanx of lawyers millions to keep his complete birth records and Harvard records sealed? Is he Constitutionally qualified to hold office and be Commander in Chief over our armed forces? Do any of the cheerleaders in the fawning media care?

    17. Ireland says:

There is a movement scheduled around the Country to protest Barack Obama’s policies of irresponsible spending the American taxpayer’s money for worthless programs that waste money and help no one. This grassroots movement will take place this Friday throughout the Country. You can learn more about it by going to the Freedom Works website http://www.freedomworks.org I think that this is something many of us has wanted for a long time. The times vary when this will take place but there are quite a number of cities that will hold their own protest.

Ken, please explain your "hope" theory when almost every comment this President has made is nothing but doom and gloom. So, I'm trying to understand your comments and what you are basing them on? Is it because he's a liberal and anything uttered by a liberal are all gems of gold or is the some passage of political rhetoric that was splutter from his lips? You come here every day to spill your liberal hate speech and I’m curious as to why you even come here? It’s certainly not to turn a conservative’s mind with your succinct writing skills, because you’re not a man of many words. I’ve confronted you numerous times and your general response is to run and hide so I’m expecting you to remain true to your previous behavior and I’m not expecting you to answer.

But I’m sure you’ve made Sean Penn proud. One problem with his exception speech is like you, Sean doesn’t know the things that Barack Obama stands for? Sean called him an eloquent speaker as he droned on about this gay marriage ban, but it has become obvious that Sean and the rest of Hollywood elite doesn’t know that President Obama’s is against gay marriage. So, it appears you suffer from the liberal disease of speaking without thinking. But, you may be in luck because I’m sure that Pelosi and your Senator Reid will put a Bill together to waste more money to research to see if there’s a liberal out there who has a brain. One thing is sure, the liberal ideology that’s spurred from Eric Holder but seems to inflict most liberals… cowardness.

    18. Ireland says:

Michael – New York New York said… Obama continues to campaign for free market albeit socialistic causes, while his friend Bill Ayers continues to say he is not a terrorist. These guys both dine together, and lie together.>>>

I guess no reporter asked the most important questions. What’s his definition of a terrorist and a free market? I have a feeling we’ve re-entered the definition phase of Government of what “is” means, just part Deux.

    19. Dave McDuffie, Lagun says:

Dear Mr Penn: Prop 8, overwhelmingly voted in by the people of California, says marriage is between a man and a woman. It does NOT say, marriage is between a "heterosexual" man and a "heterosexual" woman. Now just who is left out? Right, no one! Nothing prevents a gay man and a gay woman from marrying and having children. Get over your "bitchy" selves, join the human race, and just because you do wierd things to each other's butts does not bestow any priveliges or rights upon you silly people. We heteros know what you do behind closed doors, we just don't want to have it in our faces on a daily basis. The next thing you know men who prefer sheep will want to marry them too. Same thing! As for the current state of affairs in this once-great country, I am still wondering WHERE HAVE ALL THE AMERICANS GONE?

    20. Sliver Wisconsin says:

The speech last night was just that, nothing there. Does anybody out there have any more info than they had before ?

This guy has filled his cabinet with tax dodgers, and crooks, not to mention congress.

On the taxes, I love the fairtax idea, or a flat tax.

Overall, we pay on average upwards of 40% depending on where you live. That's all taxes, state, local, fed, etc. That's working until April to pay you're taxes, or every day you go to work, you work until just about lunchtime to pay your taxes.

      BE THERE IN 2 YEARS.

I'm looking for a decent copy of the fine 'Karsh of Ottawa' photograph of Barry in his back garden, wearing denims and carrying a pump action shotgun. He couldn't find it when I wrote to him at the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The copy I have appeared in the Daily Express newspaper in England, datelined November 22, 1963, and printed at two o'clock that morning GMT, titled "The Man Who's Gunning for Kennedy."

(According to Texas Attorney-General Waggoner Carr in evidence to the Warren Commission, Lee Harvey Oswald was an FBI employee at the time of the shooting. A-G. I received an e-mail on 2-24-09 that I thought encapsulated all that conservative persons like myself believe. The quote was written by the late Dr. Adrian Rogers. It follows:

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that, my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

I couldn't have said it better!

    28. Seth Warner - Litchf says:

Isn't " explosion in the size and power of our federal government" in the past eight years largely the result of 9-11 and the need to develop more effective anti-terrorist abilities including the large and expensive TSA as well as more troops and weapons, etc for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Shouldn't we consider this to have been part of the Bush administration's defense of our country? That being the Federal Government's primary resposibility, I should think that the Heritage Foundation would be more supportive than this of the effort though no question it might have been more effective. To use this statement in this way seems to me to more than appropriately denigrate the effort .

Why would Nato allies sent more of their troops into harms way? When Diane Feinstein, others in the House, Senate, the White House and the news media provide aid and comfort to our enemies. How you say? By opening their big mouth concerning troop movements, base locations, troop sizes, and deployment information.

Why I wonder, investigation are not being called for? I know these people have to sign the Federal Secretes Act.

Anyone who holds a high clearance is required to sign. Why are those of us in service of or were in the service to our country, held to a different standard then those mention above.

Most of us, military and employees, if not all are still under these provisions that hold server penalties if violated.

I believe Diane Feinstein and as well as others should be held accountable. They should loose their position, be fined, and placed in prison. If just one troop is injured, or killed it punishment be demanded.

    31. FlexSF says:

    32. Mike Sheahen, Hickor says:

"Thousands of miles of power lines and wind turbines", yet not only do we get almost all of our electricity from coal-fired generation, which is neither reasonably nor responsibly possible to "reverse" any time soon [including four to eight years]), but also, before he was "elected", even Comrade Obama warned that "under my plan, electricity rates would skyrocket", and not only that, but "wind power" is not only both proven and documented far too unreliable (considering the fact that wind is neither blowing everywhere nor blowing everywhere hard enough), but it is thus also so cost inefficient and ineffective, (even if government gets in on it and forces us taxpayers to pay for it all, that it is also neither reasonable nor responsible to expect that to change, including within any four or eight years.

"Expanded mass transit", yet "mass transit", in all its' forms, vehicles, and devices, and expanses, etc, is both manufactured from and propelled by sources dependant upon fossil fuels/electricity, and managed, controlled, and utilized by people whose individual, family, local, state, and national lives and economies also depend, directly or indirectly, on fossil fuels/electricity, all of which makes it also neither reasonably nor responsibly possible to expect that to change any time soon, including within the next four or eight years.

"Massive new carbon tax", yet the earth, we humans, and practically every other form of life on earth, ARE carbon-based and generate various forms of carbon; plus, not only that but the fact is that the earth and its' water, not "man", is the overwhelming source and generator of water vapor which is the number-one so-called "greenhouse gas"…All of which actually helps expose any "massive new carbon tax" as nothing more than another lousy excuse for more Leftist government elitist vote-buying money and power-grabbing taxing and spending.

"A reconstructed auto industry", yet it is already abundantly documented and evident how that is a ploy for further government take-over of what remains of non-government-control of businesses and jobs in the U.S.

"More pay for teachers", yet, Comrade Obama evidently said neither anything about that coming with "the string attached" of more Leftist government elitist control and indoctrination (which the Leftist government elitist-controlled teacher's unions actually favor), which is already documented and proven to be causing students to actually be indoctrinated instead of educated, and worse, nor anything about his efforts, and those of his Leftist Comrades (including lawsuits) against merit pay for teachers who actually teach students their classroom subjects.

"Increased pay for soldiers and Marines", yet Comrade Obama left out how he and his Comrades are going to drastically cut our defenses, which will include ways to cut instead of increase military payroll, only too similar to how Carter did it.

"End the Iraq war", yet Comrade Obama evidently left out how that breaks our promise to "pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and success of liberty", as stated by President John F. Kennedy and virtually repeated by President George W. Bush.

"a new national service program", yet Comrade Obama evidently left out how we're already "swimming" in so-called "national service programs", which, again, helps expose that as yet another ploy for yet more Leftist government elitist taxing and spending.

Need I continue with the "wish list" which followed in the article above? I believe not, since the glaring contradictions and lousy excuses I've already listed from Comrade Obama should be more than enough to show what a Socialist at any cost and excuse he and his Comrades are, and thus also of course how the facts don't to such Leftist government elitists.

    37. Tom, Paonia, Colorad says:

Why didn't you complain one bit while your dolt of a president turned a record surplus into a record deficit and then doubled it. That was fine since he was "a guy you'd like to have a beer with". No, Obama has been spending money like it literally grows on trees. However, he is doing this to clean up the mess that you folks created.

To the idiots that say things such as "Assign the federal government to their primary role of national security so as to provide a necessary safe environment for states and free markets to prosper." Don't you realize that letting the free market run amok with no oversight is was caused the critical situation that we are in right now.

Here is a little history lesson for you. In the last 100 years we have had 4 recessions/depressions. Each one followed at least 8 years of Republican rule. The only time that a Republican didn't trash our economy was in the 50's with Eisenhower and not even Bush couldn't have ruined our post-war economy.

Harding – Coolidge – Hoover – 16 years and then the Great Depression

Nixon – Ford – 8 years and then the 70's Recession

Reagan – Bush – 12 years and then the 90's Recession

W – 8 years and then the mess we are in now.

And you still have the balls to call yourself the party of fiscal responsibility.

Tom, you're weak and ignorant! Drink your kool-aid. You and your president obviously don't know what personal freedom and fiscal responsibility is. Drink up!

    42. Eugene Hoffman, Hous says:

Creativity and the ability to take a concept to fruition in the market place has been the hallmark of our successful market. Ford, Edison, Carnegie, and countless others would not have made their marks, or carried through with their innovations in this era of intrusive government regulation and heavy-handed controls. The middle class workers, small farmers, and small business owners, and our soldiers have always carried the load for our Nation: I fear the burden will become to great; the federal government is crushing any incentive to work harder for the extras in life. They are rewarding those who do not excel; they are awarding the whiners.

    43. Barb -mn says:

April, Tom is wrong, Eugene is right. I am not a capitalist. My family struggles week to week. We believe in the freedom and independence of this country but taxes are taking both away from us. Obama will certainly take it away. In fact, one of his stimulus was directly at our income. He found out there are people who will struggle at many lengths to preserve their freedom and independence. He wants to take that away!

We've made it through (out-of-our-control)hard times without looking to anyone else for help especially the government imposing innocent taxpayers. We continue to struggle due to government inefficiency and their own greed which is only getting worse.

We are much better off working for private businesses than government, as private businesses expenses are their own. Governments' expense is to the taxpayers. I am thankful for the rich capitalists. They provide jobs and opportunity. I am grateful independent big business who can pull up their own pants and am grateful for those that don't hold their hands out. In other words standing against the governments bribery offer. The more individual Americans pull up their own pants, the less the government pays out to those that won't pull up their own pants, the less taxes we will be forced to pay. Businesses that fail on their own must fail. That is the manhood of America. Businesses that fail because of government is the overtake and undermine of government.
