Our Vision

Building an America where freedom, opportunity, prosperity, and civil society flourish.

About The Heritage Foundation

Founded in 1973, The Heritage Foundation is a research and educational institution—a think tank—whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense. We believe the principles and ideas of the American Founding are worth conserving and renewing. As policy entrepreneurs, we believe the most effective solutions are consistent with those ideas and principles.

Were They Born Yesterday?

Reuters reports:

The United States is ready to look at re-modeling its missile defense plans to include Moscow, a senior U.S. diplomat said on Friday in a concession to Russian opposition.

The Kremlin has been pressing Washington to give ground on the proposed missile shield in exchange for Russia helping supply the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan — a priority for new President Barack Obama.

“(Washington is) open to the possibility of cooperation, both with Russia and NATO partners, in relation to a new configuration for missile defense which would use the resources that each of us have,” Interfax news agency quoted U.S. Undersecretary of State William Burns as saying.

The Obama administration has said it will press on with the missile shield plan, but only if it is proven to work and is cost-effective — a qualification seen in Moscow as a sign Washington is ready to compromise.

Are we really about to let our missile defense priorities become dependent on Russia? The same Russia that has repeatedly held the entire European continent hostage using their dependence on Russian natural gas supplies? The same Russia that has intimidated and invaded former Soviet states of Eurasia?

Cooperation with Russia is fine. But making both our missile defense and Afghanistan policies dependent on them only makes us more vulnerable.

One Response to “Were They Born Yesterday?”

Why does this surprise anyone? History again is the instructor to our relations with Russia. WWII, the Russians were part of the Axis until Hitler turned on them. Caught between Axis powers, Russia maneuvered Herself with the Allies and wound up with half of Europe. People like General Patton tried to warn the Powers but he was told not to upset our Russian allies.

Russia has been a thorn in the side of the Free World since then. Korea, The Space Race, Viet Nam, The Cold War, and a frightful week in October known as The Cuban Missile Crisis. Whenever the World cried for help, the US went there but never was able to finish the job because of the closely matched Nuclear capability of both sides.

The US has always tried to make nice with Russia yet never taking Its eyes off the Bear. In doing so, the US has catered to the whims of Mother Russia if nothing else, to stave off Nuclear conflagration. It is a no win situation, Russia speaks and we back off. Only President Reagen had the audacity to stand up the the Mother Bear and look Her in the eye and say, “Show me your game and I’ll punch your clock!”.

Now, it appears that the Left will take us back to the 1940’s when the US didn’t want to upset our “Russian allies”!
