  • Morning Bell: Yesterday's Top 5 Most Audacious Obama Statements

Yesterday the Pew Research Center released a new poll on the economic stimulus debate. Like every other poll taken so far, the Pew poll showed again that support for President Obama’s Trillion Dollar Debt Plan has fallen since it was first announced. While 92% of those polled viewed Obama as a good communicator, those Americans that were paying the most attention to the stimulus debate also were the most opposed to the plan. The more that Obama’s lofty rhetoric is tested against fact and common sense, the less support his policies have.  Below are just the five most audacious sales pitches Obama employed to gin up support for his Trillion Dollar Debt Plan.

No Earmarks: What it does not contain, however, is a single pet project, not a single earmark, and it has been stripped of the projects members of both parties found most objectionable.” – This is a clever semantic ploy by Obama. While it is true that no individual Congressman stuffed a Bridge to Nowhere in the bill’s conference report, when Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. David Obey (D-WI) wrote the bill, they included billions of line-item spending elements to payoff leftist interest groups, including: $450 million for NASA “climate-research missions”, $600 million for NOAA “climate modeling”, $2 billion for a single power plant in Obama’s home state of Illinois, and on and on.

4 Million Jobs:My bottom line is to make sure that we are saving or creating 4 million jobs.” -Obama is not creating 4 million jobs. According to the Congressional Budget Office, under the most optimistic models Obama’s Trillion Dollar Debt Plan would create only 3.6 million jobs and could produce only 1.2 million jobs. And one in five of these jobs will be a government job.

Spending:Look, I would love not to have to spend money right now. This notion that somehow I came in here just ginned up to spend $800 billion, that wasn’t — that wasn’t how I envisioned my presidency beginning.” – That’s a different tone from Obama’s own chief of staff, who recently said, “Never allow a crisis to go to waste…They are opportunities to do big things.” But the bill itself is all the proof you need the Obama and his leftist allies thoroughly love their chance to blow a trillion dollars. The Obama Trillion Dollar Debt Plan doubles the size of the Department of Education and creates 32 brand new government programs. Worse it sneaks in a major down payment on Obama’s health care plan creating the bureaucracy and tracking systems necessary to force socialized medicine on the American people.

Free Lunches: Once the economy stabilizes and people are less fearful, then I do think that we’re going to have to start thinking about how do we operate more prudently, because there’s no such thing as a free lunch.” – Obama’s Trillion Dollar Debt Plan is founded on the belief that government’s can provide endless free lunches to the American people. Does Obama believe the trillions he wants to spend grows on trees? Nobel laureate Gary Becker writes: “There are no free lunches in spending, public or private. The increased federal debt caused by this stimulus package has to be paid for eventually by higher taxes on households and businesses. … The burden from higher taxes down the road has to be deducted both from any short-term stimulus provided by the spending program, and from its long-run effects on the economy.”

Japan:We saw this happen in Japan in the 1990s, where they did not act boldly and swiftly enough, and as a consequence they suffered what was called the “lost decade” where essentially for the entire ’90s they did not see any significant economic growth.” – This statement is audacity defined. Since 1992 Japan has spent $6.3 trillion in stimulus spending, racking up the largest public debt in the developed world — totaling 180 percent of its $5.5 trillion economy. And this massive borrow-and-spend splurge did nothing to help the economy. And Obama thinks this is evidence in support of his Trillion Dollar Debt Plan?

No wonder support for Obama’s economic stimulus plan is sinking like a rock.

    Quick Hits:

    • The size of the bank bailout Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner will unveil today may top $1.5 trillion.
    • Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) said Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) “have really failed” to produce a stimulus that is “efficient, stimulative and timely.”
    • Defending his vote in favor of Obama’s Trillion Dollar Debt Plan on Laura Ingraham’s radio show, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) falsely claimed that Harvard economist Martin Feldstein supported the stimulus bill.
    • Since none of the men held at Guantanamo were read their Miranda rights on the battlefield, trying them in civilian criminal court would be the same as setting them free.
    • As General Motors burns through taxpayer money trying to stay in business, they are also trying to shed 1,675 of its more than 6,000 dealers by the end of 2012.

    1. Andy Wist, Murphysbo says:

The statement of 4 million jobs created makes no sense to me as the population of the U.S. is about 3 million which includes children, retired, etc. What do we need 4 million jobs for? What am I missing?

    2. Jack Lohman says:

Yes, you are missing two zeros. The population of the US is well over 300 million.

But beside that, Obama and the Dems should be given a chance. We tried it under Bush and the Republicans and giving tax breaks to the wealthy. Conservatism failed. And though I voted for Mccain, Obama should be given a chance.

    3. Paul from Canton Ohi says:

This man needs thrown out of office immediately. He is doing nothing but destroying this country financially and weakening us militarily. This bill is nothing but paybacks to those who helped him buy the White House. It's no wonder he wouldn't disclose who donated to his campaign. And what the blazes is Acorn doing getting all that money? They committed fraud getting him votes.

    4. Danny FLA says:

In One Word Intelligence: will tell you -if you cannot understand what you are told, and what you are led to believe- Then you will either knowingly/ or by any other name sent to pasture like regular Sheep.!Nothing just comes along- if for some reason, the economy fails/ while people make vast ammounts of wealth, while you cannot obtain a j-o-b then it is larger, than mistakes made by those, who have never cared, for a free people. The handwriting is on the wall-you will be assimulated.

    5. Tony Hollick Bristo says:

This "Free Lunch" issue needs more serious thought.

People who don't eat can't go to work or pay taxes, thus "closing the loop."

In the near future, most work will be done by intelligent computers. Most people will not be able to compete at _any_ wage.

Either we have a small machine-owning oligarchy, with an immiserated population who have no money to buy anything, fulfilling Marx's pprophecy; or, we can recreate Ancient Greece without the slaves, via Basic Income Guarantees.

Professor Dwight Murphey has written extensively and brilliantly (as a Classical Liberal) on these transformational issues.

    6. David Welden, Powder says:

To Andy: Our Current Population is about 300 million, not 3 million.

To ALL: Does anyone know if the ACORN reward money is still in the bill? I've haven't heard it mentioned recently.

    7. Shirley Thomas, Dall says:

You say that support for the bill is sinking like a rock, but news reports say the bill will be passed by the Senate today. Isn't it amazing that the democrats in Congress seem to be impervious to logic, common sense and the pleas of the American people?

    8. Mary Ann Claxton Frn says:

In the Quick Hit section it states that Heath Shuler is a Democratic Representative from Tennessee. Representative Shuler is from North Carolina.

      Thank you.

    9. John Johnson, Betten says:

The US population is over 300 million.

    10. LVKen7@Gmail.com - says:

Why did the HF leave out -

PEW shows that 51% DISSAPPROVE OF THE GOP handling of the PLAN.

      ONLY 34% Support them

Remember – this is a PLAN

      until Obama Signs it.

    11. Loree says:

What is up with the nationlized healthcare in the stimulus bill. Why aren't you all screaming across the airwaves about this??? This is crazy at the least. We Americans should be outraged and storming to Washington.

    12. Walt in El Paso, TX says:

yes, it's a return to the jimmy carter days; or worse.

    13. Alison M Robinson, M says:

Good information — but what to do about it?

I am confident that my Congressman, and Senators

will not support the Bill; so what now?

Are enough phones NOT ringing on Capitol Hill?

Most people I talk to are getting busy signals.

It is good to have information like this, but

offer solutions, even something to get readers

      to think up their own.

I have confidence in Pew if not other polls but

we have heard Sen. Harry Reid ask why to bother

      listening to them [the people].

    14. S Davis Louisiana says:

If this monstrous piece of partisan pork passes, we all might as well line up and say "yes, massa" to the federal government taking everything we have worked for and 60% or more of our paychecks- Slavery to the federal government will be all there is. Oops, sorry. We are not supposed to be smart enough to see this.

    15. F. Kern, Arizona says:

The law goes after people that steal money from others & yet our government is about to take the American People for $800,000. I have not gotten any of my Congressmen to listen to the people. How is the supposed to help people that have lost their jobs or are lossing their homes? Lenders DO NOT LEND TO PEOPLE WITHOUT A JOB OR THAT HAVE A FORCLOSURE!! This tax & spend administration needs to be stoped! We need lawerys that are not afraid to take on the Washington theives wit a class action lawsuit, the American People VS Obama & Congress. Do Americans not know how long we are going to pay for these campaigh pay backs? The money they are throwing at their chosen few is property of the American People!

    16. paul r. ducktown,t says:

I'm a refugee from the socialist state of maine and just because obie got three moderates to go along with him doesn't mean he's working with republicans.

    17. Danelle H, Charlotte says:

Actually, the population of the US is 303,824,640. But that is neither here nor there. The main issue is that not even a Vegas strip magician would commit to the feat of pulling four million jobs out of thin air.

There is an old story about a man who decided to start a business making baskets and selling them door to door. He knocked on door after door, smiled, made a very convincing speech about the quality of his baskets and still left with a wagon full of baskets and zero orders. The potential customers all said the same thing, "I don't need a basket and I really don't want a basket but thank you for stopping by and if you start selling something I need, please come back." He was angry. Why wouldn't anyone buy his basket when he really loved to make them and they were, in his mind, quality craftsmanship? How should he change the sales pitch to make people buy the baskets?

The moral of the story used to be that success in business comes about when you provide quality services or quality products that people actually need. Business success was not founded on selling folks your vision or passion alone. The two were mutually exclusive. The man should not find a new way to sell the items but instead sell an item people actually want and need.

In today's world the same man would obtain a loan based on over-valuation of his product and market demographics, hire a marketing firm to start an advertising blitz to convince people they need his basket, contract a manufacturer in China to process a millions of baskets at 1 cent per basket, sell them in large quantities to big box retailers for a 10 cent per unit profit, trade in his wagon for an Escalade and buy an over priced 4,000 sq ft home built by illegal "immigrants" based on the projected future profits of basket sales, declare a loss for the business within 1 year and eventually ask for a government bail out when people stop buying the thing they didn't need anyhow.

This is the problem. We do not just need "jobs". We need actual value. We need positions that mean something. We need to start making something that people actually want to buy.

Stop promising us government jobs and start letting us get our lives back in order. If you want more jobs in the US, tax imports accordingly and I bet the companies who have sent the manufacturing overseas will suddenly come back home. The bridges will come when Americans have real, sustainable jobs. Although, it is funny how fast train tracks were laid and roads were built when the manufacturing companies needed them to move raw materials and goods.

There are simple solutions that do not have anything to do with trimming trees in the national forest or filling potholes in Arizona.

The campaign is over. The time for buzzwords and rhetoric aimed at the emotionally reactive jersey wearing fan boys of Obama as a person and not a government entity representing the American public has passed. We are not Obama's children. We do not want to be chastised into consuming or agreeing. We do not want him to give us jobs. We want our country back and we want him and congress to stay within the constraints of their offices to help us get back in line.

    18. Andy Wist, Murphysbo says:

duh… dropped a zero… my bad. need coffee..

stand corrected us pop. 300 plus million

    19. Jack Lohman says:

Loree, a Medicare-for-all addition to the bill would be the smartest thing they could do. It would bail out 100% of employers to the tune of $6000 per employee per year in healthcare premiums. If we are to spend taxpayer money, I'd rather it be spent there, so the employers could spend that $6000 on hiring instead.

But the insurance industry is blocking it because they are consuning 31% of our health care costs without ever laying handes on the patient. But they are enjoying the profits all the way to the bank. Say thanks to their campaign contributions for this (read, politial bribes).

    20. kent, Virginia says:

Obama campaigned successfully by telling everyone what they wanted to hear. A populist and impressive public speaker, he created a massive following and overflowing campaign chest. In the debates he often sounded like he was far to the political right of McCain. He will not govern that way. He is a Liberal Fascist. He believes in the power of (his) Party and (their control of) Government.

I just returned from a business trip to New York (Obama City). Every business associate, cabbie, doorman, waiter–EVERYONE I talked to is worried and fearful. No one has any answers, many are afraid their jobs are, or soon will be, in jeopardy. But, thanks to a fawning press, they all still think that somehow The Chosen One will save them. I ask them exactly what in this bloated Spending Plan and giveaway to campaign contributors and giant step towards National Socialism will help them or their jobs. No answer. They don't have a clue. This spending monstrosity will do more to increase the power and influence of the Fascist Left in our country and burden our grandchildren with huge taxes.

Welcome to Obama Nation. As the cover of Newsweek proclaimed, "We are all Socialists Now!"

Silent Majority, Conservative America! Save the dream that once was America. Demand term limits for ALL career politicians and take back your government!

    21. Constance, Newark says:

The thing is, we are all in this together, Republicans and democrats, conservatives and liberals, and it seems to me Congress is trying their best – WHICH IS THEIR JOB, BY THE WAY, TO COMPROMISE – and come up with something reasonable but immediate. The news updates are unfortunately missing the forest for the trees and I feel like conservatives need more honest debate about the issues written by very intelligent analysts and yet we seem like disheartened ideologues who haven't learned how to communicate! Can't we agree to disagree with what's happening in a more informative way? I wish we would stop searching for the guilty party, namely Obama, as it seems the emails are doing lately. I would like to read in the next newsletter an analysis that speaks as if we are one people, Americans, searching for the best answers; instead, we sound not the bully in the stands who didn't make the football team, so spends his time making fun of the quarterback trying to get the ball down the field in an extremely tough game. It's not noble or classy, let alone principled. What d'ya say, can we change the tone of our debates?

    22. Hillary, Omaha says:

      Andy,

The population of the U.S. is not 3 million. It is about 300 million.

    23. A. Medina, Kissimmee says:

      S. David I do agree with your post 100%. It's sad we had been put in this situation by mis-informed voters, who just cared for looks, race, charisma and the freebies offered to them. I was shocked by some of the reasons for voting Obama, which had nothing to do with the President's Responsibility position. Now were are in economic crisis and billion dollars are being given away to bureaucrats and campaign machines as their reward, that are using the money in an irresponsible manner. Our citizens are suffering and struggling to survive, but no help for them. Banks are asking for visas for foreign workers that will replaced their own employees with bailout dollars and illegal aliens will be getting jobs with this money too. NO restrictions to protect the hard working American workers at all. Is my knowledge we had really named their offices with e-mail, faxes, etc., but it seems some of our "leaders" can't hear our plead to protect our people, and stopped the bankrupt and fall of our country. Meantime the illegal aliens(who get billions for their care, will be blessed with the stimulus plan and the foreign workers will get the jobs provided with the stimulus.

Another dangerous bill in last 24hrs. Doctors will be told what treatments will be given to his SENIORS patients to cut expensive treatments out from being used. Seniors cuts will be used as an "economic crisis stimulus" by making every one to be affect with this horrible added bill. Seniors will be push to the grave sooner than expected, thanks to our "smartest Congress" in our "NEW CHANGE" elected President cabinet and Congressmen! Where is all this billions expending dollars will come from? China already is the master owner of our country! Wake Up Americans before is too late. Our country will not be recognized. It will be another 3rd. World Slum. God Help us.

    24. Richard Cancemi, Arl says:

Obama is a forked-tongued, hypocrite & Socialist. He, and all those on the far left, will destroy this Country as we've known it. We are already on our knees; Obama is a beguiler working towards delivering the coup to complete the dissolution of the Constitution.

He is on record as saying the Constitution is not to HIS liking and needs change/replacement. His first act as President was to lie. He swore to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution! He lied throughout his campaign and has not stopped yet.

I pray the Country succeeds ; I pray for Obama's Socialism to fail!

    25. Marion Leigon, Ashev says:

Heath Shuler is the Democratic Congressman from Western N.C., my area, not Tennessee. I am Republican, but have watched his actions since being in Congress, and he has voted common sense, not just party, and as of today, am proud of his representation.

    26. Douglas, PA says:

Constance, the fact of the matter is -

Yes, we are all in this together however, the bill was written by the Democrats, they locked out the conservatives who had real solutions that would benefit ALL Americans – not just the special interests groups (getting this as a pay back), and the low income.

    27. Jerry S. Dickinson L says:

General Motors is spending the hand-out by cutting jobs? That means in one case alone the job creation prediction is at a net loss. We all understand that any created Govt. job is a tax funded expenditure, right. We do don't we? Trusting the Chinese, ask Mr. Adelson how that works.

    28. Danelle H, Charlotte says:

Constance…we are not one people. We are individuals people and individual states who have a federal government with the sole JOB of protecting our few mutual interests and protect out borders. It boils down to the fact that we do not have JOBS because our JOBS were all sent overseas so the companies contributing to gov-co can evade taxation and hire substandard workers to work in substandard conditions for substandard pay.

I (and likely most Americans) do not want a government job. I do not want the government to pay for and regulate my healthcare. I want the government to impose the same taxation on companies that export labor and import manufactured goods in the hopes that we continue to consume as they do on companies that manufacture products state side. I want the government to set a flat federal tax on everyone with no loopholes and simple rules. I want the government to protect the borders so that I, a small business owner working in the construction field, do not have to compete with businesses that pay employees with zero experience or knowledge of the trades 3.00 an hour to build substandard homes to sell at an inflated price to people who cannot afford the home in the first place. I want the government to stop using my money to pay for people to have babies that they cannot afford. I want the government to keep their hands out of my wallet, their heads out of my bedroom and their pet projects out of the government.

If the Republicans and Democrats alike just did their JOB, we would not be in this situation in the first place. More of the same is not going to help anyone. We need real change and real change is going to hurt.

Our government is now as obese as our children. It is time we all go on a diet and get on the treadmill. It is time we all put down the business degree and realize that there are not enough paper pushing service jobs. We need real jobs. We need to get off of our high horse and put our noses to the grindstone but in order to do that we need the grindstones to be brought back to this country.

    29. William H. Adkins, V says:

The man who curently claims the title of President of the United States is failing to follow thru with his campaign promises of believeable change and he is preparing America for bankruptcy in the financial and moral sense.

In light of his current performnce if the election were held again, I wonder if he would do as well? He didn't get my vote the first time and

I'm certain he wouldn't get it the next.

God, help us, because Barack Obama and our current Senate and House will not.

    30. Cindy San Diego says:

Unfortunately most americans know nothing about economics. Does it make sense to have a spending bill when the problem is with the banks and mortgages? We need to fix that first, it is the problem. Obama labels those 2nd and 3rd for fixes. I suppose another couple trillion to pay that off. I don't see a stock market recovery in my earning years, I'm 52. I think gold is the place to be for the next 5- 10 years.

    31. nita, North Brunswic says:

The last time I actually spoke up, made calls, and involved myself with any major issue was back in the 60's. For the last several weeks, I have written to my senator, and others, spoke up, and spoke out.

On a talk show yesterday, a older lady called in to ask "where does the money from the stimulus package come from, and will I have to pay for this deficit??

If every thinking American could get one person in addition to themself, to actually read this stimulus package all the way through, there would be a bigger uproar against what our commander in chief is trying to scare us into supporting.

This is not our last hope; and far from it. I am a 62 year old, self surpportive, disabled American, and believe me, I have read this bill.

This would be the worse thing to happen for all Americans….. Forget about job creation now, forget about being able to not only keep your house, but be able to buy and finance one in the near future.

My son, who is a professional, was laid off from his job in December, and within three weeks, was employed; at a higher salary; and just helped a former classmate, also laid off; get a position starting tomorrow. We are not back in 1929. We never will be there………..this great country will rebound; if given what is really needed now to help all Americans.

The stimulus bill needs to be revised, and all of our elected representatives must speak up, and not allow this package to be put through. This is where we have to stand up and fight; not just think about, and dismiss this; but stand up, educate ourselves, and speak out NOW.

Please, read this stimulus package that is proposed; please. You owe this to future generations to come.

    32. Slingo says:

      No Earmarks?

$2,000,000,000: ($2 billion) the approximate amount of money that House Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D-WI) is earmarking related to his son's lobbying efforts. Craig Obey is "a top lobbyist for the nonprofit group" that would receive a roughly $2 billion component of the "Stimulus" package.

$3,700,000,000: ($3.7 billion) not to be outdone, this is the estimated value of various defense contracts awarded to a company controlled by the husband of Rep. Diane Feinstein (D-CA). Despite an obvious conflict-of-interest as "a member of the Military Construction Appropriations subcommittee, Sen. Feinstein voted for appropriations worth billions to her husband's firms ."

$4,190,000,000: ($4.19 billion) the amount of money in the so-called "Stimulus" package devoted to fraudulent voter registration ACORN group under the auspices of "Community Stabilization Activities". ACORN is currently the subject of a RICO suit in Ohio.

I don't know what these are, maybe they are necessary to provide the poor old taxpqyers jobs wo they can start paying this debt off.

    33. Slingo, New Mexico says:

      Are these Earmarks?

    34. John E Rosina, Borde says:

Very well done. I stand corrected by yesterday's piece in which Heritage did a great job of pointing out the last administrations culpability in our national debt.

As I have said before – it is not a political ideology one way or the other. It is a total unified mismanagement of our national economy and stripping of our industrial base by folks on Wall Street who know not one thing about how to make one product of real value. What in the hell does Cerubus know about a car factory. I'll risk saying "not much at all".

We need answers and action. I hope we find some quickly. Some spending will be required, at the very least.

It's tough out here when people with 700 credit ratings can't finance a car.

    35. Wayne from Jeremiah says:

Linked to your post from "BlogWatch Fact Check"

    36. Anne-Marie, FL says:

I hope all of you Toddler-in-Chief supporters get everything you voted for…although I'm fairly certain you don't have a clue what you vote for. He's not about to elevate you welfare slackers to middle class and certainly is not going to make you wealthy. He's not going to pay your mortgage or fill your gas tank. He will most certainly indenture for many generations. But you've already proved you're too stupid to understand those very basic concepts. Your beloved leader has suckered you in and is using you to pave the way to your own demise. — Yes, the next 4 yrs will be a little tough for the hard-working Americans as we make adjustments to preserve our EARNED wealth (no matter how meager some may be) and as we keep from retching up our lunch every time this liar opens his mouth, but in the end we will come out ahead. We aren't looking to the gov't for handouts paid for by hard-working Americans. We actually know how to take care of ourselves.

    37. Pete Kleff, Cypress, says:

Short and sweet. Senators Arlen Specter, Olympia Snow, ans Susan Collins should be forthwith ejected from the Senate Republican caucus and stripped of all Republican seats on all committees.

    38. Dennis A. Social Cir says:

The american people voted for change. CHANGE HAS COME TO THIS COUNTRY, IT'S JUST WHAT KIND OF CHANGE DID WE GET???

I do not think we wanted a socialist government, but the dems are going to see us get it, or they will bankrupt this country in the process. Just think we have four more years of this BS.

    39. Alison M Robinson, M says:

One of the biggest problems for Obama, his administration

and the newly elected democrats is that they will

first have to realize that who elected them are

not the same people listening to them now.

Those people have never voted before, having only

just gotten registered by an ACORN volunteer, and

are not politically active in any other way.

Probably will not vote in any other election.

(Conservatives take note.) Once Obama concedes

that he is not talking to the ones who voted for

him, then he will have to readjust his message.

$450 million for NASA climate studies is a probable waste judging from past performances. I am convinced another $600 million for NOAA climate modeling is a total waste. 10 years of trying to model climates, as complicated a mishmash of complex variables which are subject to "cherry picking" to achieve desired results, have yielded 10 years of "unprecedented Global Warming." That is according to strident Al Gore devotees. Unfortunately for them the weather has not cooperated. We have actually been in a cooling trend these past 10 years. In fact Russian scientists and some others are concerned that we may be actually heading back into another ice age. I and over 31,000 of other US scientists have petitioned the US Senate last May to the effect that carbon dioxide has nothing to do with climates. (www.petitionproject.org)

What I think is an outrage is where is the news media in all of this? The news media can analyze Sarah Palin down to her eye glass manufacturer but they can't send up the red flags about how spending money that we don't have is a bad idea?

How much more do we Americans have to take of the liberal controlled news media trying to control our thought processes with their non reporting of the facts and their blatant reporting of non issues???

      Amazing!

Welcome to The United Socialist States of America (U.S.S.A.)!

Our new flag will be an outline of the USA with a big "X" through it, on a black background, and the words, "Marxism Forever" across the bottom. How about bumper stickers, too. That just about does it.

Not only will abortions be rampent, and probably encouraged if you have too many kids, but now, citizens will be told "NO" to treatments if they are over a certain age. Can't waste money on the elderly, you know.

Does this mean people like Senator Kennedy or Justice Ginsberg will no longer be able to have treatments for their cancers? Oh, it doesn't? What about poor Senator Byrd who fainted at the coronation?

They are too important to let suffer, you say?

Can I be on the committee that makes these decisions?

      No, because I'm conservative?

Thanks for clearing that confusion for me.

I hear all these people saying that the elected officials don't listen to the people. If you want them to listen to you don't vote for them. If you vote for them they don't worry about what you want, politicians are only worried about getting new votes not keeping the ones they feel are safe.

The problem is Conservatives will vote for Republicans who vote to increase the Governments roll in our lives.

NRA members will vote Republican even if the candidate is in favor of Amnisty for illegals even though they don't support it.

The Black community will still vote 95% Democratic even if the Democratic party was promoting reinstituting slavery.

The Liberals would still vote Democratic if the Democrats were promoting censorship of all dissent.

If all these groups would just realize that they are perpetuating the problem by not thinking about what these politicians promise instead what they do and voted on their actions instead of their oratory, this country would be a lot better off.

    48. Mike, Indiana says:

I've got an idea. Let's do nothing and rely on churches and charitable organizations to pick up the slack. And let's start another war without including the cost in the federal budget, because let's face it a war will pull us out of recession and let's continue giving tax breaks to the rich and hope that a little of it trickles down to us……Oh wait….we tried all of that AND IT DIDN'T WORK! WHERE WE'RE ALL YOU NAYSAYERS WHEN BUSH WAS RUNNING UP THE FEDERAL DEFICIT LIKE A DRUNKEN SAILOR AND RUNNING ROUGHSHOD OVER THE CONSTITUTION.

    50. Linda in Texas says:

Regarding available credit, Wells Fargo recently reduced my personal line of credit accountant with them from $10K to $3.3K. My outstanding balance at the time was $2.9K. The balance is paid off monthly and is usually zero. The reason given for the reduction was "collection filed." After looking at my current credit report, unknown to me, I found that an older medical bill was sent to claims. This claim was due to an insurance co delay and also our billingaddress was wrong input wrong by the hospital. My credit score is 781. I am a "Preferred" customer at Wells Fargo and have been for decades. If available credit is affecting me—god help those

in need of credit. By the way, I am a small business owner and am very concerned by the stimulus package and how it will affect insurance, taxes, employees…Our government employees—-including the "President" had better wake up soon-before we U.S. citizens and small business owners have nothing left.

It is time to make our elected officials accountable for their actions. The same laws that apply to us apply to them. We need to clean out the goverment and elect all new elected officials and run the country like we would if it were our own business. (No more 'special' exceptions for elected officials.) Our government

appears to be very corrupt and our elected officials are looking out for themselves and their 'good ole boy network'. We pay high taxes and are punished if we do not. How can Obama appoint someone who did not remember to pay-after they were reminded by their accountants. These appointed officials should not be allowed to hold a public office and should be penalized on their late taxes and bad decisions. Obama's choice is some of his appointed officials makes me question his offiliations and trustworthness. People typically choose people like themselves that they like. Regarding ACORN, I can't believe they are being bailed out for their illegal activity. But, as far as that goes, I can't believe that the mortgage companies and banks are being bailed out for their bad decisions. Is someone going to bail my small company out when I can't pay my taxes? Why should we (yes I said we,we are the ones paying the taxes) bail out the gov't, banks, mortgage companies, car companies….

The American Sheep voted, and now they get what sheep get. Follows; all of them. Not one able to stand up and think; stand up for their beliefs.

Change, you anted change. When will you get it?? The only change you get is that in word……Change. See if that gets you jobs now? See if that appeases all the survivors of 9/11? Our commander and chief's first act; Gitmo. A disgrace, something every sheep must live with out here among the surviving parents, children husbands, wives, sisters and brothers.

This stimulus fiasco, Gitmo…….here's some of your change. Let's see how happy you'll be now. Did any of the sheep read the stimulus package? Maybe you should stop paying taxes, and follow the lead of the president's cabinet appointee's.

The legacy that this President will leave for future generations, I can't even bear to allow my self to think of it.

    52. Spiritof76, New Hamp says:

Mike, according to the US Constitution the US Congress appropriates or confiscates the money. If you were so railed up about Bush and the Republicans (by the way, I agree with you that Bush went along with the spending spree)why didn't Pelosi and Reid defund the war, reduce the budget and eliminate the pork in 2007? Would you feel better if our country went bankrupt with Republicans in charge?

What we have is not about Democrat or Republican problem. It is an American problem. Massive uncontrolled spending by the government, all of it either borrowed or printed will enslave our children and grandchildren. The socialist bill they are trying to pass is just the prescription for our country's ruin. In a year or so all this is going to come to a crashing halt. The foreigners won't buy our debt and the dollar will become worthless. With socialized health care, nationalized bank and no production, we need to keep that shovel ready. The only thing we will be able to do is to dig our own grave with it.

There is one thing that may come about by then- a second revolution to get rid of all the socialists and commies and restore our Constitution to its rightful place. It will be very painful.

    53. calkid, cal. says:

If ACORN is rewarded for their underhanded efforts in electing the pres. and his cohorts, you can rely on the Constitution sliding into the pit. 54. Ken in Santa Barbara says:

      Afternoon Conn C.

Did you read the whole link you referenced on the Japanese economy? All you got was the part about 6.3 trillion over 18 years (= ? billion on average/year)

"Moreover, it matters what gets built: Japan spent too much on increasingly wasteful roads and bridges, and not enough in areas like EDUCATION and SOCIAL SERVICES, which studies show DELIVER MORE BANG FOR THE BUCK than infrastructure spending.

“It is not enough just to hire workers to dig holes and then fill them in again,” said Toshihiro Ihori, an economics professor at the University of Tokyo. “One lesson from Japan is that public works get the best results when THEY CREATE SOMETHING USEFUL FOR THE FUTURE.”

"In total, Japan spent $6.3 trillion on construction-related public investment between 1991 and September of last year, according to the Cabinet Office. The spending peaked in 1995 and remained high until the early 2000s, when it was cut amid growing concerns about ballooning budget deficits. More recently, the governing Liberal Democratic Party has increased spending again to revive the economy and the party’s own flagging popularity.

Economists tend to divide into two camps on the question of Japan’s infrastructure spending: those, many of them Americans like Mr. Geithner, who think it did not go far enough; and those, many of them Japanese, who think it was a colossal waste.

But some Western economists who have studied Japan’s experience say the stimulus accomplished more than it is now given credit for. At a minimum, they argue, it saved the economy from an outright, 1930s-style collapse.

Moreover, they say, any direct comparison of Japan and the United States is inevitably misleading, because Japan has spent so much more over the years on infrastructure. Having neglected its roads, bridges, water treatment plants and more over the years, the United States is bound to generate a greater payback for such spending than would Japan.

Beyond that, proponents of Keynesian-style stimulus spending in the United States say that Japan’s approach failed to accomplish more not because of waste but because it was never tried wholeheartedly. They argue that instead of making one big push to pump up the economy with economic shock therapy, Japan spread its spending out over several years, diluting the effects.

Maybe you should spend less on political scribble and strive to present true thought provoking conservative insight. I can understand where YOU think some here might not understand what you are attempting to say but at least give your readers the benefit of the doubt and the pertinent facts. There's plenty in the article for us all to form better insight and knowledge.

      Mr. Lohman:

You stated that conservatism failed and we should give democrats a chance. The truth is that the Republicans failed Conservatism, not the other way around. Neither President Bush nor Senator McCain are true Conservatives. That is what went wrong.

As for tax breaks for the wealthy: When did a poor person ever create a job for someone else? A fact of life is that it takes money to create industry, which in turn, creates jobs for the citizens. Then these same citizens become responsible (and tax-paying) people.

The free market principle is quite a good thing if left unfettered by government. Less taxes on the "rich" encourages investments in this creation of industry. It is a win-win situation for all Americans.

    56. Trish, Enid, OK says:

People need to stop re-electing people without principles to represent them who, after their election, go to Washington to cow-tow to a few radical Party leaders like Pelosi and Reid. Every single Congressman or Senator who votes for this monstrosity porker bill, should be voted out of office in 2010. And, if we can manage to hang on until the next presidential election, we need to throw B.O. out on his butt. He's a Socialist (or worse). He obviously intends to be a "one-termer," the way he's going about things. I believe he really thinks he can drive this country into bankruptcy and still get re-elected. I really believe he is that arrogant. I don't like what the Democrats and B.O. are doing to this Country. They are turning this Country into a Socialist, debtor, nation populated by self-centered, self-involved, irresponsible, welfare dependent, anti-Christian, bleeding hearts who think it's okay to take the wealth from one (less progressive) segment of society and give it to another, who did nothing to earn it. They want us all to be forced to belong to Unions. They want their cake and eat it too. They want one-party rule, but they still want to blame everything on Bush and the Republicans. I don't recognize my Country anymore. I don't feel safe here anymore. I don't feel secure here anymore. I don't see a future here anymore. This is the land where we destroy our most important resource, our own children, while, at the same time, we wrench our guts over the thought that a terrorist in Gitmo might get his hair wet. Good grief!
