On Nov. 4, Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) narrowly outpolled challenger Jim Martin (D), 49% to 46%, triggering a runoff election held yesterday. This time around, Chambliss crushed Martin by a margin of 57% to 43%. Why the difference? The New York Times reports:

Many voters interviewed Tuesday said the balance of power in the Senate had been an important factor in their choice of a candidate. “If you can’t have a little back-and-forth arguing between the parties, then the party in power will make mistakes,” said Ron Zukowski, a computer expert in Atlanta who voted for Mr. Chambliss. “This was my chance to say no, and I said no.”

Clearly the American people want change built on common ground between liberals and conservatives, not a one-sided remaking of the United States. In the spirit of identifying that common ground, The Heritage Foundation begins a series of policy memos this week called Change We Believe In: Memos to President-elect Obama. The goal is to reach out to Obama on subjects where his words line up with our vision of how to solve critical issues facing America.

This is not the first time Heritage has undertaken such a project. Shortly after Bill Clinton won in 1992, Heritage issued 15 similar Memos to President-elect Bill Clinton on such subjects as creating jobs, reforming welfare, trimming bureaucracy, preserving military strength and expanding trade to spur growth. Heritage is proud of the cooperation that resulted from those memos and the policy victories they achieved in the form of the bipartisan welfare reform in 1996 and the passage of NAFTA in 1993.

Throughout his campaign, Obama made a concerted effort to appeal to conservative voters. He promised to “cut taxes for 95% of workers and their families,” expand the Army by 65,000 and the Marines by 27,000, and enact “a net spending cut” for the federal government. Lower taxes, a strong defense and shrinking the size of government. These are core conservative beliefs. We plan to make sure Obama follows through on his promises. As Heritage’s Kim Holmes points out, “During the campaign, President-elect Obama sometimes said different things on the same issue. We’ll put some of those apparent contradictions on the record and ask for clarification as needed, so the American people will understand where their new president stands.”

The first four memos to Obama urge him to:

Future memos will be released regularly, leading up to Obama’s inauguration on Jan. 20. They will address energy, education, border security, trade, entitlement spending, religion in the public square, civil and criminal justice reform, international organization reform, and relations with China, Russia and Pakistan. There is little chance we will agree on everything that comes out of the Obama administration, but where there is agreement, we look forward to working with him, and when Obama fails to live up to his promises we promise to hold him accountable.

The UAW has gained control of the coffers of the big 3 automakers, like vultures they now set upon the wallets of the American taxpayer. As stated many times, once Pelosi, Reid, Levin and the Obama team allow this to happen we will forever be on the hook to these incompetents. Three weeks ago management came to Washington without a cogent and workable business strategy or rationale, via corporate jets, and most importantly, without any concessions from the UAW. They began with $25 bn, and it immediately grew to $34 bn. This is only the beginning. The big three simply cannot prove that they know how to run an automotive manufacturing business. Otherwise they would not be here. Their problems are not macro economically related, but micro economically related. Virtually all of the immediate and emergency measures stated in their proposal should have been in their business plan many years ago. What is missing from their plan are three key issues: [1.], A renegotiation of the UAW contracts, [2.], a move into chapter 11 bankruptcy and time to reorganize, [3.], changes in management. Failure to include these options only will prolong the inevitable; the final and ultimate collapse of the American big three. The fear mongering that the big three bozos [with Pelosi as cheerleader] are spewing forth that America will collapse if they move into chapter 11 is nonsense. This is indeed the very time, when volume is low, and demand weak that these companies should reorganize. They would emerge stronger, leaner, more profitable, and independent. We also risk the danger that congress will dictate the type of automobiles that the big three make: giving the tree huggers control over an enterprise that is owned by stockholders. This 110th congress has already ventured into very dangerous territory with endless bailouts. Many of the democratic governors are already lining up for bailouts, yet, no fiscal changes are begin proposed: less spending, more tax revenues if needed. Mr. Obama is receptive to these requests as seem by his meeting yesterday in Philadelphia. The dollars simply cannot take much more of deficit spending until it is weakened beyond repair and the Euro becomes the world’s base currency. The rating agencies at some point must consider the downward pressure being placed on Treasuries, and downgrade the rating below AAA. Once these two event occur, America will truly know what the word depression means. Write your representative ASAP.

So Heritage is going to issue memos to educate Obama? You're going to ask for clarification? You'll hold him accountable for reneging on his promises? Please, be real. You'll have as much influence on The One as a horsefly; if he notices you at all it will be to brush you away. No, the Anointed One listens to Ayers, Rev. Wright, and, in absentia, Saul Alinsky.

As the Aussies say, we're in for a rum go.

"The goal is to reach out to Obama on subjects where his words line up with our vision of how to solve critical issues facing America."

It would seem from the blatant statement above that we seek "common ground" only in the sense that President-elect Obama agrees with "our vision" and does not allow room for his or other visions of how to solve critical issues…

Perhaps we should be more willing to hear the other side of if we really do want balance. After all, when we as Republicans controlled the Senate, there were plenty of examples where the other side were given little or no opportunity to share in critical decisions.

Now, we must act as we expect the other side to act. That is with patience, understanding, a willingness to hear their side of the issue, be clearly heard without abusive behavior and compromise when necessary.

I WANT SOMEONE TO TELL ME WHY WE CAN'T FORCE HIM TO PRODUCE A BIRTH CERTIFICATE. I AM GETTING EMAILS ASKING FOR MONEY. BUT I REMEMBER HAVING TO PRODUCE ONE TO GET MY DRIVERS LICENSE, JOIN THE MILITARY, ANY OTHER THINGS. "THIS" MAN AND HIS PARTY ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW. HE MUST BE MADE TO PROCUCE A VALID CERTIFICATE. ARE THERE NO REPUBLICANS WITH THE B—LS TO BRING THIS UP? WHY SHOULD THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE TO DONATE MONEY, AND WAIT YEARS FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. I AM DISGUSTED WITH THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, AND THEIR ELITISM. THIS DOESN'T SEEM LIKE A STRANGE REQUEST. BUT I GUESS HAVING TO PRODUCE VALID ID TO VOTE IS WRONG TOO……. THEY ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW…WE NEED A STRONG REPUBLICAN TO STAND UP. …… "WE WILL STAND WITH YOU"

I am concerned that Obama has said that he will see that the dictates of the Green Religion of Global Warming will be carried out as soon as the economic situation improves. So far the overwhelming voice of science (www.petitionproject.org) has been suppressed. This unfortunate idea has no scientific validity and has the ability to destroy our free society. It would require expenditures of trillions of dollars for no reason other than politics that replicate the failed Roosevelt's WPA "New Deal" of the 1930's. I believe this may be the most important issue our Nation has faced since the Civil War.

    15. Dennis Aderholt Soci says:

I hope Heritage will be able to do what they say. I like what they have done up to now. As for the democrats I will never vote for one again. I have always tried to vote for the person I thought would do the best job, a representative of the people. Well that has changed, the dems are like a bunch of whinning children, give me what I want or I will have a fit, kicking and screaming till we give in. All politications need to remember why they are in their position, represent the people. We need to go back to the Constitution, a government of the people, for the people, by the people. Sometimes I think the Republicans have forgotten also.

    16. Glenn Herrera, Los A says:

I am concerned of the lack of focus on the second amendment and citizens rights to keep and bear arms. All through the election, I was waiting for the topic to be discussed. Obama’s numerous votes and opinions in opposition to gun owner rights were not highlighted. If not for the efforts of the NRA who took out ads and carried the alert to its members, Obama’s abominable record of opposition to the rights guaranteed by our forefathers would never have seen the light of day. The Republican Party missed the boat on this issue. Please make sure The Heritage Foundation does not do the same.

I don't believe in "change" of the constitution to fit the minds of GOVERNMENT or OBAMA. It is a written document that is timeless! The constitution is written to apply to all human life. NOT GOVERNMENT. The words "promote the general WELFARE of the people" is understood to mean GET OUT GOVERNMENT! Look up the word WELFARE. IT'S NOT GOVERNMENT!!!! I don't believe in "change" that promotes a weak society. Where your responsibilities are yours and you will take the responsibilities of the irresponsible. I don't believe in "Political correctness" when it indicates people are incapable or too easily offended of the truth. I don't believe in "change" of a democracy to socialism. I don't believe the people are as WEAK as the democratic party insists they are.

      Thank you Heritage.

Why is it that the Heritage Foundation has never mentioned the fact that Barack Obama still refuses to turn over a verifiable and certifiable ORIGINAL copy of his birth certificate proving that Barack Obama is a NATIVE BORN citizen of the United States of America? As you must know the Constitution of the United States of America DEMANDS that any person running for the Presidency of the United States of America be a NATIVE BORN citizen of the United States of America. So far, Barack Obama refuses to turn over any such document. Right now, all evidence points to Barack Obama being a native born citizen of Kenya, Africa. Right now, we are trying to get the ELECTORAL COLLEGE to STOP and NOT sactify Barack Obama as our next President of the United States of America until such time that Barack Obama does provide a verifiable and certifiable ORIGINAL copy of his birth certificate proving that he was a native born citizen born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1961. So far, he refuses to do that very same thing. Do you want a man in the White House as President of the United States of America who is NOT elibiable to be in the White House per our United States of America Constitution? Why have you NOT brought this subject matter up before? If you love America like I do then you are obligated as a loyal American organization to come up with the TRUTH.

I'm confused. Didn't "his majesty" already have to prove legal citizenship to become a senator? Or even to start school and college? I had to produce all that information when I enrolled my son in the first grade and later when he went to college. What's going on here? This situation is a scary thought!
