In response to my complaint to the local Medford OR NBC affiliate referring to President Obama as 'Mister Obama,' (albeit a 2nd reference) they replied:
"....the AP Style Book which is the official document of how news is presented states that in first reference the President is mentioned with his title, after that in second and future references it is by Mr or simply the last name."
I'm not a subscriber to the AP Style book but I question that any OK to any presidential reference of Mister is correct. Just plain Obama would be correct, although I agree, that sounds disrespectful.

Yes, I do think it's disrespectful. I just read this article, http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?stor... and was surprised that they weren't saying President Obama. I think they should always have the President. I mean...10 years from now...if someone is reading some article (and Time Mag. is even worse, not even saying President Obama at ALL)...who is going to even know they are talking about the president? It's like not putting a Dr. before someone's name who has earned the degree as Dr.. It's wrong...honestly, it just an excuse to be lazy in my book!

I just commented on MediaBistro, too: After a year of "President Barack Obama" on first reference grating on my eyes in the papers, I finally decided to search for the apparent new style and found your site and Mr. McIntyre's essay. I'm shocked. As I said to MediaBistro, "Exactly which President Obama do they think we're talking about, that we need clarification?" The same goes for using "Mr." on subsequent reference. And yes, I do in fact consider it disrespectful! I don't think it's jingoistic to find it insulting to the man and the office. There's only one President of the United States; as they say, "He needs no introduction."
