Center for American Progress Strikes Again

When it comes to environmental policy, we’ve documented the Center for American Progress’ penchant for distorting reality before. Now they are at it again, this time trying to prove that Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is “unaware” that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused “major” offshore oil spills. Debating offshore oil drilling on Fox News, Jindal accurately said, “You know, that’s one of the great unwritten success stories, after Katrina and Rita, these awful storms, no major spills.” To rebut Jindal’s claims CAP links to a Minerals Management Service study that they … More

    International Cooperation on Nuclear Energy

Recognizing the need for a substantial increase in clean energy supply to meet both growing demands and carbon dioxide reduction objectives, the Group of Eight (G8) leaders are expected to reach an agreement on commercial nuclear energy at an upcoming climate change summit next week in Japan. The initiative will focus on three principles to increase international transparency and reduce concerns about a global nuclear renaissance: nonproliferation, safety, and nuclear security. The draft states, Recognizing that ensuring safeguards (nuclear nonproliferation), nuclear safety and nuclear security (3S) forms a sound basis … More

Free Trade Fact of the Day

The New York Times reports today that at least 29 governments, including China, Norway, and South Korea, have drastically limited the amount of food their people can export. These protectionist measures have only worsened the global hunger crisis by driving up the price of food for poor nations. Heritage scholars Brett Schaefer, Ben Lieberman and Brian M. Riedl explain why trade barriers are a a major cause of hunger world wide: Although developed countries generally maintain low trade barriers, their highest trade barriers tend to apply to agricultural products and … More

Nobody Buying Latest Liberal Line On Energy

Liberals in Congress continue to blame anybody but themselves for the high price of energy today. Commenting on the passage of s bill directing the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to use their “emergency powers” to end “excessive speculation” in oil future’s markets, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, “The American people should not be punished at the pump for the actions of oil speculators.” Too bad nobody with an ounce of economic training is buying the liberal scapegoating. Last week liberal columnist Paul Krugman chided those eager to blame speculators for the … More

Morning Bell: The Left’s Undemocratic Blueprint for Carbon Capping

The biggest reason liberals failed to get the Senate to pass the Lieberman-Warner mandatory carbon emission cap bill was because they failed to convince the American people that the economic harm carbon caps would cause were worth the meager and mostly symbolic benefits. Since very few analysts believe the price of energy will be any lower in 2009, the left faces certain failure should they try a legislative fix again next year. Enter the California model. Last week the California Air Resources Board (CARB) unveiled its plan to reduce California’s … More

    The Truth About ANWR Drilling

The following e-mail was forwarded to me today, and it’s just too good not to republish. Coupled with American Solutions’ petition with more than 1.2 million signatures calling for energy production, it is clear that oil drilling can mobilize the right like few other issues. First, do you know what ANWR is? ANWR = Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Now, a comparison: And some perspective: Note where the proposed development area is (in the ‘ANWR Coastal Plain’):

The Plight of Christians in Iraq

Robin Harris, a former adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, has written a very important piece for National Review Online highlighting the plight of Christians in Iraq. Harris presents a compelling case for the United States, Great Britain and the West to do more to protect Iraq’s embattled Christian minority: The situation can thus correctly and without exaggeration be described as desperate. The best long-term hope for the Christians is the success of America’s and the Iraqi government’s war against al-Qaeda. Stability is what all Iraqis need — and … More

    Pakistan Peace Deals Falling Apart

An editorial from major Pakistani English daily The Dawn demonstrates that the era of “peace deals” in Pakistan’s tribal belt and other parts of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) may be drawing to a close. Strong and decisive action is needed without delay for the situation is spiralling out of control. Baitullah Mehsud captured and then withdrew from Jandola at will, setting houses ablaze and killing pro-government tribal leaders by the dozen. After fresh clashes in Swat that left at least 10 dead on Tuesday, the peace deal struck … More

Americans Cherish the ‘One’ in Our ‘Many’

Widespread ignorance of U.S. history is only the most visible symptom of a troubling decline in popular knowledge of the nation’s core principles. Some hopeful news, as well as sobering facts, arrived earlier this month in “E Pluribus Unum,” a report issued by the Bradley Project on America’s National Identity. The purpose of the project, brainchild of the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, is to begin “a national conversation … to affirm the belief that what unites us is far greater than what divides us.” The report warns: Many Americans … More

Keeping the Focus on Dodd’s Deal

Our friends at FreedomWorks are keeping the pressure on Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) for his sweetheart deal with Countrywide Financial and the housing bailout he negotiated to benefit the company. During a recent trip to Capitol Hill, the FreedomWorks team brought its Pander-bear to Union Station to shine the spotlight on the cronyism. Check out AngryRenter.com for more information.
